Michael attended the opening of the new Shannon Gaels pitch last week and spoke to some of the movers and shakers behind the project including Chairman Robert McDonagh and former Chairman Sean Price.(The video version of this podcast is also up on Facebook and YouTube if you would like to see some footage of the new pitch)Shannon Gaels are a Queens-based GAA club and their new pitch - at Frank Golden Park - is located in College Point in Northern Queens. The pitch is a hugely significant milestone for Gaelic Games since it is only the second full-sized GAA pitch in the five boroughs of New York City besides the Gaelic Park surface in the Bronx. The project cost $5.2m (€4.48m) and was funded entirely by city funds after Shannon Gaels members helped in the long planning process.Shannon Gaels advocated for its development for years and were able to convince the city to lease them the ground — and part with the cash — after the club privately developed a smaller, adjacent pitch at the park around three years ago for $2m.Michael also wrote a story in the Irish Examiner about the opening which you can read by clicking here.Let us know what you think, by leaving us a comment on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @thelonghallpodcast or visit our website www.TheLongHalPodcast.com.Please like, and rate and subscribe to the podcast, this will ensure we can get more episodes to you more often. You can check out all of our previous podcasts on www.thelonghallpodcast.com where we have tons of post match interviews and reports on all of this years New York GAA finals. You can also find other Irish American sports stories and other news items. On next week's show, Raymond Byrne from The Hard Way Home Team returns to look back on his attempt to row across the Atlantic the summerSubscribe to be the first to be notified of a new episode!! Gaelic Park is the home of hurling and football in New York City, but for many Irish immigrants arriving in America, it is much more than a sports club. It was a place to meet old friends, sing songs, have a few drinks, and reminisce about life back home. ( 1978)
'Twas Irishman General John A. Logan (he of Logan Square in Chicago) that led the cause for the creation of the national holiday that we call Memorial Day, a day that we remember those that have died in service of our country. With roots in County Monaghan, Logan fought in the Mexican-American War, at the Battle of Bull Run in the Civil War, and in the rotundas of the Illinois and United States Senate. Memorial Day also rings in the official start of summer, and with it, the Irish Fest at Chicago Gaelic Park. Tune in to Windy City Irish Radio as the boys celebrate the sounds of Gaelic Park weekend with music from The High Kings, Makem-Spain Brothers, Young Dubliners, The Larkin and Moran Brothers, The Fenians, and Canadian Celtic rockers Mudmen. Also tap your feet to songs and tunes from Cathie Ryan, Liz Knowles Music, Gaelic Storm, Van Morrison (Official), Liz Carroll, and The Elders. Join Tim Taylor and Mike Shevlin each Wednesday night from 8pm to 9pm CST on WSBC 1240AM Chicago, WCFJ 1470AM or on our website at www.windycityirishradio.com.

On this Friday the 13th edition of the Deadpod I decided it fitting to honor the great Pigpen, seeing as his birthday was just a few days ago on September 8th, and this show, long a request from one of my listeners, was one of his great performances. This one comes to us from the Bronx New York, on August 26, 1971, at Gaelic Park. This week's first set is filled with great Pigpen performances, including Big Bos Man, an outstanding Hard to Handle, Good Lovin' and one of only a couple circulating versions of "Empty Pages". Don't overlook Garcia's intro to that Good Lovin' as well as the fact that 'sweet Susie' makes an appearance in a fine version of Loser. For anyone who enjoys this incredible year of growth in the band's development this performance is a milestone. I'm sure you 'll enjoy it and we'll listen to set 2 next week...
