Fr Alex's book @Our Daily Bread, Argos To The Altar can be purchased here,https://www.waterstones.com/book/our-... and you can follow him on X @alexdjfrostAndrew Pierce is a British journalist, editor, author, broadcaster and political commentator.Pierce was born in Bristol to an Irish Catholic mother and an unknown father. He spent the first two years of his life in Nazareth House, a Catholic orphanage in Cheltenham, and was adopted by a family from Swindon and brought up on a council estate there. His adoptive father worked on the assembly line at British Leyland, a formerly state-owned car factory.[6]Pierce was educated at St Joseph's Roman Catholic School,[7] now known as St Joseph's Catholic College, a state comprehensive school in Swindon. He did not go to university.[5]Career in journalismPierce is a former assistant editor of both The Daily Telegraph and The Times newspapers,[ and the former political editor of the latter. He is a columnist and consultant editor for the Daily Mail, which he joined in 2009.Pierce presented a Sunday morning political radio show on the commercial radio station LBC 97.3 from 2008 until 2012, when he left. That radio programme was in the latter years presented as a double-headed show with Kevin Maguire from the Daily Mirror. Pierce and Maguire continue their double act reviewing, previewing and dissecting the media and politics on the BBC, ITV and Sky News. From 22 March 2014, Pierce started presenting a Saturday breakfast show on LBC Radio.Pierce is currently a presenter on the GB News television channel.Finding Margaret is the moving story of journalist and broadcaster Andrew Pierce's search for his birth mother. As he was approaching fifty, Pierce decided that it was finally time to track down his biological mother. He knew that he had lived in a Roman Catholic orphanage in Cheltenham for more than two years and was adopted at the age of three by a family who loved and nurtured him. As his career in journalism flourished and despite feeling like he was betraying the adoptive parents who loved him so much, Pierce began to tentatively search for his birth mother, only to find that she had done everything she could to ensure he would never find her. When he finally managed to meet her, the mystery only deepened, leading him to Ireland in search of the man who may or may not have been his father. During his search, Pierce also realises the extent of the mistreatment he suffered at the orphanage and attempts to forge a relationship with the woman who gave him away. This candid book is a heartwarming page turner that takes the reader on an extraordinary journey. Full of amusing and arresting anecdotes, at its heart lies the inspirational story of one man's extensive search for his birth mother and what happened when he finally found her.

The Week in Westminster

To discuss the increasingly fraught state of world affairs, Jack speaks to Sir David Liddington, who was deputy to Prime Minister Theresa May, and now chairs the defence and security think tank RUSI and the Labour MP and chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, Emily Thornberry. As thousands of farmers attend a rally in Westminster to protest against last month's budget, Jack speaks to Labour MP, Jeevan Sandher, who sits on the Treasury Select Committee and the former Conservative MP and environment minister Rebecca Pow, who comes from a long line of farmers in Somerset. Children's rights campaigner and crossbench peer, Beeban Kidron discusses whether social media should be banned for under-16s. And to reflect on the life of John Prescott, who died this week, Jack speaks to two people who knew him well from his years in government, the associate editor of the Mirror, Kevin Maguire, and a former minister and chief whip in Tony Blair's government, Hilary Armstrong, who now sits in the House of Lords.

BWA-HA-HA! Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatties may not have originally set out to turn DC's signature superteam into a workplace sitcom, but with artist Kevin Maguire they produced a screwball series still treasured by fans. With a roster assembled largely out of desperation and a constantly shifting status quo, Justice League International reinterpreted how the superhero would be perceived in a post-Crisis, post-Watchmen comics landscape by leaning into the absurdity instead of making its subject grimmer and grittier.

While things were getting grim an' gritty in 1980s comics, the antidote was a dose of BWAH-HA-HA, which came in the form of Justice League International.  We take a deep dive into issues #5-8.In the post-Crisis, cold war decade of the '80s, a new Justice League was needed, and while this version of the league took their heroics seriously, it didn't stop them from cracking a joke or two or three or....well, you get the point.  This classic comic re-invented the League for a new era and the inspired creativity of Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire made sure the action and the jokes were fast and furious, sometimes ending in literal punchlines. There's battling, backstabbing, and drama....and that's just amongst the heroes themselves!Needless to say, we had a lot of fun doing this episode.Hosted by Brad Page and Chris Karam

Our monthlong celebration of Xmas-themed comics continues with a tribute episode to the late great writer/illustrator Keith Giffen, who passed away in October 2023 at the too-young age of 70. Keith's career touched every corner of superhero comicdom, most notably the longrunning Justice League International series he co-created with J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. In the first half of this episode, we'll be taking a long, chaotic, tangent-filled look at Keith's character Ambush Bug, culminating in the AMBUSH BUG STOCKING STUFFER xmas one-shot released December 1985. Brace yourself! Then, we'll dive into holiday hijinks with The Main Man himself, Lobo! Keith's most xtreme creation accepts a bounty hunter contract on Santa Claus himself in THE LOBO PARAMILITARY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL from December 1991, before facing the metatextual and literal fallout of that battle in THE AUTHORITY VS LOBO: JINGLE HELL, released December 2003. Rest in peace, Keith Giffen! Thanks for the decades of awesome comics.

Over the two-and-a-half years I've been writing The New Fatherhood, I've had conversations with some great thinkers and doers that have made me consider fatherhood, and my experience of being a dad, in a new light. I've featured some of these exchanges in the newsletter before, but thanks to recent advances in AI I've been able to take old recordings and whip them up into near-studio quality. As a parent, I know your time is precious, and am grateful for every minute you spend here. I wanted to find a way to share these interviews in a fatherhood-friendly way—because ain't nobody got time for a two-hour unedited conversation. After reading the average school run was 28 minutes long, I'm aiming for each episode to hit this length. That way, you should be able to fit it in whilst on your way home, or to work, after dropping off the kids. Each discussion will come with a companion essay, which can always be found at https://www.thenewfatherhood.org/podcastWe're opening this series with author Daniel H. Pink. Our conversation was recorded early last year after the release of his wonderful book The Power of Regret, which invited readers to consider this often-maligned emotion in a new light. I've got more episodes in the can that will be gracing your ears soon, covering the same topics we regularly return to here. You can expect one new episode every month—that feels like a cadence that won't destroy me?!—and I'm beyond excited to share them with you. A very special thank you to Max McCabe who is taking the reins on the audio production and killing it right out of the gate.Quotes:"Parenting is offering something beyond hedonic pleasure-driven satisfaction. It's delivering something more important, it's delivering meaning, it's delivering purpose, it's delivering love." - Daniel Pink"Very few people regretted having a kid even though we know from other research that when we have kids, that when we're raising kids, you know, the first 20 years or so that having kids actually reduces our day-to-day hedonic satisfaction and well-being." - Daniel PinkTimestamps:00:00 - Introduction and Kevin Maguire's admiration for Pink's work.00:54 - The scientific approach to understanding regret.08:22 - Few people regret having children despite challenges.09:44 - Rarity of regrets about not having children.10:06 - Confessions of marital infidelity from submissions to the World Regret Survey.13:37 - Educational divide and its impact on parenting styles.15:01 - Encouragement to take action and try new things as a parent.15:32 - The importance of a slight bias for action.16:20 - Challenges and considerations in deciding to have children.16:33 - Comparing regrets of bad marriages to regrets of having children.Key LinksFind out more about Daniel PinkBuy The Power of Regret Get full access to The New Fatherhood at www.thenewfatherhood.org/subscribe

On this week's episode of London Calling, Toby and James start by talking about James' health (he has a cold), then segue into discussing what James says is the best hunting experience of his life. Toby then tells James about his week (hangover and all), which included appearing on Jacob Rees-Mogg's debut show on GBNews and attending the third anniversary party of the Free Speech Union. They then get on to the past week's big story - the Lockdown Files - the more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages belonging to former Health Secretary Matt Hancock that were leaked to the Telegraph by the journalist Isabel Oakeshott. It inevitably leads to a heated argument about whether they prove Toby right that the past three years have just been one almighty cock-up, or corroborate James' suspicions that the lockdowns and the vaccine rollout are part of some diabolical conspiracy. In Culture Corner, they discuss the season 3 opener of The Mandalorian (Disney+), Drive to Survive, Fleischman is in Trouble (Disney+ in the UK, Hulu in the US) and The Playlist (Netflix) which James highly recommends. Opening sound this week is Andrew Pierce of The Daily Mail and Kevin Maguire of The Daily Mirror discussing the Lockdown Files on Good Morning Britain (ITV). Learn more about your ad choices. In episode 132, I am joined by award winning and long time writer, JM DeMatteis. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, J. M. DeMatteis was a professional musician and rock music journalist before entering the comic book field. DeMatteis has written almost all of the major DC and Marvel icons—including memorable runs on Spider-Man (his classic "Kraven's Last Hunt". Also co-writing Justice League (winning DeMatteis and his collaborators, Keith Giffen and Kevin Maguire, comics' highest honor, the Eisner Award); but his greatest acclaim has come for sophisticated original graphic novels like Seekers Into The Mystery, Blood: A Tale, The Last One, and Mercy. In our interview, JM talks about his work in the business, his various projects and current projects such as his Kickstarter, The DeMultiverse consists of four all-new, all-different comic books he has written. Each of the four initial DeMultiverse titles is completely different in tone and style, and each one is co-created by a different artist and his upcoming Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt this November. JM is a very inspirational writer and his words really resonated in this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pixelclassroom/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pixelclassroom/support

This special episode of the HOPE not hate (HNH) podcast is a recording of one of our fringe meetings at this year's Labour conference. It features a conversation between Kevin Maguire from The Daily Mirror and HNH's Head of Intelligence, Matthew Collins, about the true story behind the dramatic new ITV series The Walk-In starring Stephen Graham as Matthew Collins. The Walk-In tells the incredible true story about how Matthew worked with a mole, Robbie Mullen, inside the then-banned neo-nazi terror group, National Action, to foil a murder plot, save the life of the then-Labour MP Rosie Cooper, send the plotter to jail and ultimately bring down National Action for good. It's a remarkable story brought to life by Stephen Graham, Jason Flemyng and others. In this conversation between Matthew and Kevin, the pair examine the story behind National Action, running a mole inside the group, the pressure Matthew was put under by the security services, and the psychological toll the whole case has had on Matthew and Robbie. To close, the pair field a few questions from the floor.TW: This episode contains discussions about subjects that people might find disturbing or upsetting.Matthew's new book, telling the full story behind The Walk-In, is available now from the HNH webstore: https://hopenothate.bigcartel.com/product/the-walk-in-fascists-spies-lies------Podcast produced by Nick Spooner------♪ Alone (Prod. by Lukrembo) Link : https://youtu.be/fLXLhOyo-2w
