Show Notes: ○ James 4:1-10 ○ James 4:1-6 § Read James 4:1-6 again in the CJB version § You desire so you kill, you covet so you quarrel and fight □ James could be talking about literal murder, or he could be talking about heart posture behind it, the hate or anger we harbor against people ® Read Matthew 5: 21-22 § You do not have because you do not pray and ask God □ James is telling saying that some of you don't have what you want because you don't even think to pray and ask God for it ® Read Matthew 7:7-8 □ The next sentence, however, is very telling…when you ask, you do not receive because you ask with wrong motives- you want only what will give you pleasure ® Read: ◊ Proverbs 16:2 ◊ Jeremiah 17:9-10 § Don't you know that friendship with the world means that you are an enemy of God? His Spirit that dwells inside of us longs jealously □ 1st, James calls the readers "adulterous people", which for the Jewish reader, would have been familiar, considering that God used various prophets to call out the children of Israel and Judah for their unfaithfulness to Him □ Remember the 1st and greatest commandment: "And you must love the LORD your god with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength" (Deut. 6:5) ® Read Romans 8:5-8 § And what does "friendship with the world" look like? □ It looks like what we just read, fighting, quarreling, and it looks like what we talked have talked about for the past 6 weeks as we've gone through James □ So what is the solution? ○ James 4:7-10 § Submit yourselves to God § Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (think Jesus when he was tempted in the wilderness in Matthew 4) § Come near to God, and He will come near to you § Wash your hands and purify your hearts § Grieve for what you have done □ Read 2 Corinthians 7:10-11 § Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will lift you up □ Read 1 Peter 5:6 Listen and enjoy! Bro. Tim brings us a message from 1 Peter to tell us how to submit to God and resist the Devil.
“Where do wars and fights come from among you?” This segment (James 4:1-10) discusses the impact of selfishness and poor communication upon our relationships with God and those made in His image. Our sinfulness aligns us with Satan, but James calls us to humble ourselves—submit to God and resist the Devil. Herein the listener will find practical tools to do just that.
SCRIPTURE TEXT: James 3:1-18 In chapter four of his letter, James (a brother of Jesus & Early Church leader), asserts that discord among believers (as with people in general) comes from warring desires and selfish jealousies. Yet these fleshly attitudes reflect the devil rather than God. The solution according to James is thus to submit to God and resist the devil (v. 7). With a repentant heart, genuine hunger for God, and an attitude of abiding humility, we can come closer to God and each other with patient love and persevering faith. We pray this in Jesus' name; Amen The act of submission is not always viewed in a positive light. For instance, in the sport of wrestling, it represents defeat. In the case of marriage, it takes absolute trust for the wife to submit to her husband, even though the bible demands it. Ephesians 5:22-24 says: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Because of rising infidelity, on the part of husbands, wives are very skeptical in adhering to this rule. Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? 6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
