Bienvenido! Willkommen! Bem-vindo! Every language has its way of welcoming someone. The word communicates a warm reception and acceptance of the newcomer into the group. In Romans 14, we are told to "welcome" our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ - despite differences of opinion - because God welcomed us. We are to welcome one another without quarreling over disputed issues.

Pastor Omar delivered an enlightening sermon based on Genesis 13, where he delved into the story of Abraham and Lot, and expanded his teaching with insights from the Book of Jasher, Chapter 15. The central theme of the sermon was the concept of "quarreling" and its implications in our lives. Pastor Omar highlighted how quarreling often arises from trivial matters and can escalate into heated arguments. He reminded us that God's wisdom, as found in Proverbs, teaches that avoiding a fight is a mark of honor. Unfortunately, our upbringing, culture, and family influences sometimes promote the opposite, treating fighting as a badge of honor. This misalignment with God's teachings can have detrimental effects, especially in marriages. Pastor Omar pointed out that many marital difficulties stem from quarreling, and he referenced the proverb that says it is better to live on a rooftop than in a beautiful home with a complaining spouse. This stark imagery underscored the importance of striving for peace and understanding in our relationships. Through this sermon, we were encouraged to reflect on our own lives and seek to align our actions with God's desires, fostering harmony and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
Message preached by Pastor Kevin Borders on Sunday, April 28th, 2024.
“WHERE DO ALL THE FIGHTS AND QUARRELS AMONG YOU COME FROM?” (James 4:1) What a great question for our day and times! As I write this, I know that our President will be giving his “State of the Union Message” tonight. Any who plan to watch, go into it anticipating “FIGHTS AND QUARRELS” to arise from his talk, as well as from the “other party leader” who will follow with their rebuttal! Also, this week, it seems the Presidential Race has been narrowed to two main candidates. This sets the stage for 8 months, filled with “FIGHTS AND QUARRELS”; but JESUS has better plans for HIS disciples and HE inspired HIS little brother James to show us that better way. Why don't you watch or listen to this message now and learn from James how to live above the “FIGHTS AND QUARRELS”? Pastor Joe Still

In our continuing series in Romans Pastor Mark leads us through the first half of chapter 14. Consider with us in light of divisions and polarizing ideas that those in Christ are to accept (welcome into one's heart) those whose faith is weak (i.e., whose consciences are more restrictive) without quarreling (arguing, passing judgment) over disputable matters (adiaphora, ἀδιάφορα). The reasons for following this command include: 1) God has accepted those who are in Christ; 2) All live under the lordship of Christ; and 3) God alone is the true judge.

Romans 14:1-23 Quarreling over matters of opinion is sinful behavior and very divisive. We need to stay away from this and live for God instead of ourselves. We should also not be a stumbling block for other believers.

Intro Paul's Sin ListsDigital media company Buzzfeed made a billion dollar business out of click-bait headlines like “10 things you must do now if you want to…” or “7 Reasons You Shouldn't…”. People love lists! You'll even find lists in the bible [ex. the Women's discussion group is going over the “7 things God hates”]. The apostle Paul is known for providing interesting lists of spiritual virtues and vices commonly known as “the sin lists”. There are 8 of them. Your bible contains other such lists but I'm limiting myself to these 8.I have compiled the 40+ sins or vices on these lists and categorized them in 5 basic groups: Sexual, Bad Temper, Greed, Quarreling, Speech. Each list contains vices from multiple categories. Sometimes, the way Paul groups and orders them shows a cause and effect relationship [this, leads to this].SPS: today, I would like to address the sins and vices from Paul's lists by category. Limiting myself to the category of quarreling: strife, self-ambition, sedition, heresy, conceits, and tumults. Note: I will be spending more time on words mentioned multiple time in the bible than I will on words only mentioned once. The multiple and different word in the category reveal different facets of this problematic behavior. Such as; what do we tend to quarrel about, what motivates quarreling, what are the outcomes of quarreling, and how do we confront it. So, let's begin:Keep Reading »

Have you ever treated someone poorly because you were envious or jealous of them? (Put downs, deliberately not celebrating their accomplishments, ignoring them, talking poorly about them to others, etc.)2. Think about a "valley" you have been through or are currently experiencing. What would you name that valley? (Ex. The Valley of Weeping, The Valley of Wrecked Relationships)3. Can you see how God has transformed or is transforming your valley into a place of blessing? If so, how?4. What wells need to be opened in your life? How have they been renamed? 5. Are you in a situation or relationship that is toxic to your mental, spiritual, physical, or emotional health? If so, name the ways this situation or relationship is having a negative impact on you.6. In what ways are you being tempted to act or react according to the flesh instead of the Spirit?
Quarreling was a topic the Apostle Paul repeatedly returned to in his pastoral letters. He warned Timothy not to get drugged into endless quarreling and useless controversies. It wasn't just a first-century temptation. Pastors today face constant temptation to comment on every controversy and to join every quarrel. Pastor Jim offers advice on how to avoid being baited and why character is so important for discerning the controversies of our day.
On this episode of Anchored, Jeremy is joined by Jonathan J. Sanford, President of the University of Dallas. President Sanford discusses characteristics that make UD special, such as its vibrant student life culture and its core curriculum. He explains that at UD students are taught to think and write well by engaging in conversation with others. President Sanford thinks that modern society has lost the art of arguing without quarreling, and that the classical tradition is one of conflict. He states that students must know others' opinions and thoughts well in order to argue against them.
