Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. There are a lot of Phish shows that are seen as turning points in both the band's career and the evolution of their sound over 40 years. The Paradise in 1988, Gamehendge in Great Woods, New Year's ‘95, Halloween 1996, and dozens more. Those are the high profile ones. Because there are also shows that can fit the description of “turning points” but don't get the same sort of attention as the ones I just mentioned. Today's guest, Josh Buswell-Charkow was in attendance for such a show: November 2, 1996 at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Florida. This show isn't exactly an unknown–Phish did release a DVD of it after all–but it does get lost in the hubbub of the band's Talking Heads Halloween costume and then the insane Las Vegas show that closed the tour in December.  The popular narrative often goes that Phish covered Remain in Light on Halloween, played small venues in Europe in the winter of 1997, and changed their sound to the cow funk we all know and love by the middle of the summer. However, there were little steps in between those touch points and today's show is one of them. Guest starring percussionist Karl Parazzo for the entire show, the listener can hear the band changing their overall sound almost on the spot, infusing the Talking Heads-style repetitive rhythm while purposely making space for the guest star. But there's even more to it than that. Let's join Josh to talk about the best time to be in Florida, the best Phish guest stars, and more as we discuss November 2, 1996 at the Coral Sky Amphitheater.

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles welcomes Scott Patrick Weiner, an artist and lifelong skateboarder who currently teaches art at Hanselton Middle School in Massachusetts. The conversation kicks off with Scott reminiscing about his first concert experience in 1991 at the Walter Brown Arena, where he saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers with opening acts Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. Scott recounts the electrifying atmosphere and the impact that punk rock had on his life following his discovery of skateboarding in 1988.The episode delves into Scott's diverse music tastes, ranging from hip hop to industrial, and his favorite bands like Sonic Youth and the Dead Kennedys. He shares insightful stories about attending Lollapalooza in 1992 and how Ministry's intense performance left a lasting impression. Scott also talks about the local hardcore scene in Boston during the early 90s, highlighting shows by bands like Chillmark that gave him a sense of community. A particularly touching moment comes when Scott describes taking his daughter to her first concert to see Wussy, a band whose songs he used to sing to her as lullabies. This episode is a nostalgic journey through Scott's vibrant musical history, marked by memorable concerts and the unifying power of music.BANDS: A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Beastie Boys, Bob Dylan, Burn, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Descendants, Dinosaur Jr., Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Gang Starr, Heroin, Ian Mackaye, Ice Cube, Jane's Addiction, Jello Biafra, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Kingpin, Lou Barlow, Lush, Megadeth, Metallica, Ministry, Mogwai, Nirvana, Palehead, Pearl Jam, Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Ritchie Havens, Run D.M.C., Said and Done, Sebadoh, Sex Pistols, Sick of It All, Slayer, Smashing Pumpkins, Smiths, Sonic Youth, Suicidal Tendencies, The Alcoholics, The Cure, The Goats, The Pharcyde, The Smiths, The Who, Tribe, U2, Wrecking CrewVENUES: 930 Club, Aragon Ballroom, First Baptist Church, Great Woods, Lollapalooza, Middle East, Smith College, The Rathskeller, Walter Brown Arena, Woods Hole PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

The vacationing Kornflake is flopped on a hammock somewhere, but the Mayor of Chickentown is here to celebrate the year 1988. After a quick look at some of the year's least popular movies (Kevin and the Mayor each saw just one of them), we turn to music. Specifically we're looking at the 1988 concert schedule at Great Woods, a beloved outdoor venue that dominated southern New England's summer concert landscape back in the day. The 1988 lineup at Great Woods featured classic rock (here comes Jethro Tull with that crazy flute), hair metal (Def Leppard, Europe, and a blindingly white combo show with Whitesnake and Great White), new wave (we should not have missed Depeche Mode with OMD), and Top 40 (George Michael, Huey Lewis, and more). Guns 'n' Roses opened for Aerosmith. Roy Orbison opened for the Beach Boys. Santana and Herbie Hancock were part of something called "Jazz Explosion," which sounds absolutely terrifying. And Kevin went to Great Woods for the very first time that summer, to see an Australian band that found massive success in the 80s. (And we don't mean Air Supply, or Men at Work, or Midnight Oil. Keep guessing.) Also: Last week we forgot to mention a certain giant robot from 1987. We apologize to giant robots everywhere. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! Hi everybody, and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. My guest today on Attendance Bias is sound engineer, Phish.net contributor, and the man responsible for the recent remastering of previously unreleased Phish recordings, Jeff Goldberg. Jeff chose to discuss the legendary Phish show from July 8, 1994 at Great Woods in Mansfield, Massachusetts. If you've been paying attention to Phish.net or the Phish.net blog over the past few years, you may have noticed that, every once in a while, the site announces the release of an archival show that was previously uncirculated. To be clear, these are separate from the band's official releases. For example, the most recent release at the time of this recording is the show from April 9, 1990 at the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon in Telluride, Colorado. If you've listened to that show, a link to which is posted in the show notes, you've heard Jeff's audio expertise.I've known Jeff for a while through an online Phish message board, and have always been impressed with his expansive knowledge of Phish, and his ability to act as an audio archeologist; to find an artifact, clean it up, and present it to the public. I was so curious about the nuts and bolts of remastering poor quality tapes, about being one of just a few to hear a show that is mostly unknown to the public at large, and his background as a Phish fan.More than that, I was thrilled that Jeff picked the show from Great Woods. Although it's a high-profile show, very few guests on Attendance Bias have brought up anything related to Gamehendge, so Jeff and I relished the opportunity to talk about the band's formative rock opera. So let's join Jeff Goldberg to hear about on July 8, 1994 at Great Woods.

My guest today is the anchor of Fox 5 News at 5 and 10 in New York City: Steve Lacy. Steve chose to discuss Phish's July 12, 1999 show at the Great Woods Amphitheater. Having grown up in Massachusetts, this was a hometown show for Steve. Not only that, but it was the band’s first show back at Great Woods after a wild weekend in 1995, and it felt like a homecoming for all involved. When I was a kid, probably 9 or 10 years old, I got a TV in my room. My curfew was to go to sleep at 10, but my parents said that I could stay up until 10:30 if I watched the news before going to sleep. As a result, I became a die-hard fan of Fox Five News at 10 in New York. This is the local city news—NOT to be confused with FoxNews the cable channel. So when I found out that the current anchor for the Fox 5 news is also a big Phish fan, I knew that I would love to talk shop with him. I’m also a big Howard Stern fan, and Steve is occasionally name-checked there, famously when he wrote an essay to rebut Howard’s negative response to Phish back in 2015. The bottom line is that I want have everybody on Attendance Bias; everyday fans and friends, but also well-known names within the community. In the end, we’re all the same. We just want to talk endlessly about Phish, and I think that came through in today’s discussion of July 12, 1999 at Great Woods.Enjoy!Audio for today's episode: 7/12/99 @ Great Woods Amphitheater

Sylvia first highlights the setting of the sutta where a Sakyan, by the name of Dandapani went deep into the Great Woods to look for the Buddha with a provoking question and describes how Buddha brilliantly disarmed him and left him speechless. Then she unpegs the crux of the sutta by explaining papancasannasankha and how "delighting, welcoming and holding" is problem and how by non-"delighting, welcoming and holding", various underlying tendences (the anusayas) can be uprooted. For the third part, Sylvia explains how papancasannasankha relates to the 5 aggregates of grasping.
