Politicians were something of a rarity at the Saturday, September 9, "Stepping Up Together" forum at the Melbourne Town Hall, but the one who did show and delivered a powerful message was Victorian Greens Senator, Janet Rice (pictured). Senator Rice described as "obscene" the Labor Party's constant justification of its push to open new coal mines and sink new gas wells, or back the gas fracking process. About 70 people sat through and enjoyed the three-hour forum that attempted to pull together disparate environment groups in a bid to draw up a joint statement of intent and hopefully, both shift and advance the climate conversation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-mclean/message

A founding member of the Greens in Victoria, Janet Rice took her seat as a Greens Senator in 2014. She began her working life campaigning to protect forests as a trained climate scientist and was part of the famous 1983 Franklin River Blockade. As Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong, Janet positioned the council as a leader in reducing carbon pollution and acting against global warming. In Parliament, Janet advocates for federal funding for public transport, bike and walking infrastructure, protecting Australia's native forests and animals, and proudly fights for the rights of LGBTIQ+ communities. October saw climate talks, states opening up and borders coming down. We chat about Glasgow's COP26 climate conference, the dark truth about poverty in Australia, and the personal journey Janet shared with her late wife Penny as members of the LGBTIQ+ community.

Val and Faith are joined in the studio on this miserable autumn morning by Will Hartnett. We briefly chat about the tragic death of Azura B in Yarraville recently, trolls abusing Janet Rice for commenting on the gender split on much of Melbourne's cycling routes and the nexus between these two. We then turn to the inaugral Indian Pacific Wheel Race, now underway after setting out from Fremantle on Saurday at 6am. Will is updating the #IPWR blog and fills us in on the leaders, their efforts so far, the conditions they've been riding in, what they can expect coming up. We also take a look at the rest of the field, with 50% of the women riding in the top ten, and some fascinating stories amongst the seventy-odd riders who've chosen to take on this challenge. Some handy links to keep in touch with the Indy Pac Race over the next week or two; Indian Pacific Wheel Race, Indian Pacific Wheel Race on Facebook, Indian Pacific Wheel Race Potato Cake Survey, Sarah Hammond Purple Dot.
