Was Barney Frank a political hero, a lightning rod—or both? Following the death of the trailblazing gay former Congressmember on May 19, Lucia Chappelle explores the triumphs, tensions, and contradictions behind one of the most influential and debated LGBTQ political figures in U.S. history. Included are recollections from Andy Humm, Ann Northrop of GayUSA and journalist Karen Ocamb (Substack: LGBTQ+ Freedom Fighters). Archive audio from This Way Out archives. And in a Rainbow Rewind, Sir Ian McKellen reflects on coming out. This week's NewsWrap on This Way Out reports on a rise in drug-resistant Shigella infections disproportionately affecting queer men, as health experts urge prevention without stigma. Missouri LGBTQ+ advocates celebrate the defeat of dozens of anti-queer bills during the state's legislative session, while activists worldwide mark IDAHOBIT amid both ongoing criminalization and notable legal victories for LGBTQ+ people. In the U.S., a federal judge temporarily blocks the transfer of transgender women to men's prisons, and the House advances a controversial “Don't Say Trans” bill targeting transgender students and schools. We also close with a milestone from Leeds, where newly installed Lord Mayor Stephen Holroyd and his partner Simon Mapals make local LGBTQ+ history. Welcome to the Monday Breakfast Show, on the show this week we had: Headlines: Violence against Flotilla participants draws international pressure on IsraelCongo Ebola Outbreak and death toll higher than official reports - From the archives: for the 21st anniversary broadcast of National Sorry Day, 3CR's Radioactive Show aired an interview between Aunty Hazel Collins, one of the founders of Grandmothers Against Removals, originally played by the Central Australia Aboriginal Media Association with host Teghan Hughes. Grandmothers Against Removal are an organisation working on the frontlines to prevent children from being removed from their families and creating yet another stolen generation. Aunty Hazel Collins and Teghan speak about the injustices faced by children who are removed from their families by the colonial government. Nošením duhové stužky si 17. května každoročně připomínáme Mezinárodní den proti homofobii, transfobii a bifobii (IDAHOBIT). Odkazuje na den z roku 1990, kdy Světová zdravotnická organizace vyškrtla homosexualitu z mezinárodního seznamu duševních nemocí. U této příležitosti jsme do speciálu fakultního podcastu De Facto pozvali doktorandky Nelu Andresovou z Institutu sociologických studií a Karolínu Hájkovou z Insitutu komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky.
Nevena and Paul talk to Joe Ball – Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities, Update on IDAHOBIT Weekend May 17 marks the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the WHO Classification of Diseases. Over three decades later, LGBTQIA+ communities still face discrimination – but every one of us can make a difference. Will you stand against discrimination? A worldwide celebration of gender and sexual diversities and a call to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community to fight discrimination. The first Mardi Gras pride march was held in Sydney in 1978, which was met with violence from police. Those who marched were beaten inside police cells and had their names published by the Sydney Morning Herald. Tasmania was the last jurisdiction in Australia to decriminalise homosexuality in May 1997. The majority of Australians today were alive during a time when it was illegal to be gay. The Marriage Equality plebiscite was held in 2017. While marriage equality was passed, 38.4% of Australians who voted (4.8 million people) voted against it. The first IDAHOBIT was held in 2005 and is today acknowledged by millions of people globally. While IDAHOBIT has evolved over these years, the purpose remains the same – celebrate the progress we have made while also raising awareness for the discrimination that LGBTQIA+ people still face today. Joe Ball was appointed as Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities on 23 September 2024 for a three-year term. Commissioner Ball (he/him) is a proud transgender man. He is a longstanding LGBTIQA+ advocate with a 25-year career in disability, housing and homelessness, and social services. Commissioner Ball is a member of the Expert Advisory Group for the Federal Government's 10-Year LGBTIQ+ Health and Wellbeing Plan. He has previously participated in several leading social service advisory committees and boards. This includes the Victorian Family Violence peak body Safe and Equal, the Community Advisory Committee for 1800RESPECT, the Victorian LGBTIQA+ Taskforce, the Victorian Family Violence Reform Advisory Group, and the National Suicide Prevention Governance Committee. Joe was previously CEO of Switchboard Victoria for eight years, where he led the establishment of Rainbow Door, the statewide LGBTIQA+ family violence and mental health helpline. Throughout his expansive career, Joe has drawn upon the strength and guidance of LGBTIQA+ history and most importantly, the work of activists who have paved the way, the courageous voices with lived experience and the wisdom of LGBTIQA+ elders. In 2020, Joe was honoured as an award recipient in the 50 Outstanding LGBTI+ Leaders in Australia. In this episode, we:discussed some of the ways in which mainstream and corporate culture are co-opting IDAHOBIT to become a bizaare form of celebration instead of the solemn day it is.delved into how much of this is related to the way in which persistent challenges faced by queer people are washed over through apathy, trivialised celebration, and the pathologising of remaining problems.concluded the importance of resisting these oppressive forces through political action performed at the individual, group and organisational level.

A project in Germany called “Sports Free” has suggested gay and bi professional footballers in the men's game should consider coming out as a group. The date of May 17 - which is IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia - has been put forward as a window of opportunity for this. But what would go through the mind of a gay player who is considering taking this step? Does nothing but happiness and freedom lie on the other side - or is it a different kind of pressure? Zander Murray took that step himself, individually, back in September 2002, making history in Scottish football. He now delivers workshops that provide guidance to young people on how to create inclusive spaces in the game. These sessions with TIE Scotland are having a big impact in Scotland and Zander hopes to take this work to more clubs, academies and schools. On a special episode of the FvH Podcast, he talks about the challenges he overcame when coming out, and gives his take on the interest around possible comings out on May 17, including by the British media. He also explains why he's so passionate about education and describes his “dream” for a future in which footballers everywhere get the info they need to empathise with any teammates who might be gay or bi, or to be their authentic selves if they are LGBTQ+ themselves. This episode is hosted by FvH media and comms lead Jon Holmes, produced by Sports Media LGBT+. Activate FvH in your football space - just head to footballvhomophobia.com/fvt for info, or contact us! SPECIAL LIVE RECORDING WITH REUBEN KAYE!Today we have an exciting episode – a recording of the sold-out Live Show I did recently with comedy, camp, cabaret superstar Reuben Kaye! This episode is unlike others. It was recorded in front of a live audience, with a man under the age of 40 and it totally went off the rails. It was a special for IDAHOBIT day – the international day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. And it's bloody fabulous!Reuben and I talk about his early dating days, his experiences at school as a boy ahead of his time (that bit will make you cry). We talked some of his sexual preferences, his sexcapades and he poked at fun at me, whilst I laughed at him. (I told him off once or twice too). Reuben is just wonderful. He was hilarious – side-splittingly so – but also raw and vulnerable. I am pretty sure he went places he doesn't usually go in interviews and man; we were the beneficiaries.A trigger warning: it's probably the best part of the episode but we do get into intergenerational trauma and there's some discussion of suicide. And Bonus – writer, creator and singer of the Dear Nelly theme song, Casey Bennetto sings the theme song live.ENJOY! The AFL is at it again with another round of awful virtue signalling. It used its Indigenous Round to announce it supported The Voice referendum and celebrated the latest alphabet day IDAHOBIT. All the latest virtue cringe on this week's Tim's News Explosion live tonight 8.30pm AEST on YouTube, DLive and Odysee. The AFL despite all its virtue signalling it's still not enough for some and doesn't stop accusations of racism or cultural insensitivity. Aunty Joy Murphy who gave a Welcome to Country at a Dreamtime at the G function accused the AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan of snubbing her. The Dreamtime game between Richmond and Essendon was marred by crowd violence with 10 evictions and a glassing occurring. The next day at the Carlton vs Collingwood game there was a crowd brawl with 3 evictions. But at least no players were booed as the booing earlier this year of Indengious Sydney player Lance Franklin was labelled racist. North Melbourne coach Alistair Clarkson has taken mental health leave as he and Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan continue to be investigated by the AFL into anonymous accusations they mistreated Indigenous players. The media deemed them guilty until proven innocent when the allegations were first leaked with Clarkson reportedly denied service at a petrol station. If such discrimination occurred to Jewish North Melbourne player Harry Sheezel Dvir Abramovich would demand action, SEN owner Craig Hutchinson apologized to Dvir last year when caller John from Epping joked that Sheezel's parents could buy a Tasmanian team as Jews are the moneymen. The accusations of racism Clarkson is probably why he hasn't taken action against North Melbourne Indigenous player Tarryn Thomas who is facing charges of threatening to release revenge porn. ABC Q&A host Stan Grant announced he is stepping away from the media he claims because of racist abuse after his anti-monarchy rant on the ABC's King's Coronation coverage. Grant also accused the ABC of not defending him, this prompted an apology from the ABC News Director Justin Stevens, a promise to investigate racism at the ABC and protests today by ABC staff against racism. Collingwood released a video of its male AFL players putting on IDAHOBIT rainbows with their Emirates sponsor on their gear, an airline from a country where homosexuality is illegal. The Sydney Swans also released an IDAHOBIT message and they are sponsored by Qatar Airways. Premier Dan Andrews arranged a drag queen storytime in the Parliament for IDAHOBIT. The Liberal Opposition was butthurt they weren't invited. Legalise Cannabis MLC Rachel Payne called on Victoria Police to take action to protect drag queen storytimes, Victorian local councils held an emergency meeting about how to respond to drag queen storytime backlash. The Guardian also published a profile piece on the new drag storytime protection force the Rainbow Community Angels. Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto was booed at the party's state council meeting in Bendigo in the aftermath of Moira Deeming's expulsion from the parliamentary partyroom. The next day State President Greg Mirabella criticized those who booed Pesutto as being part of a cultural cancer, he also said the party should better target young voters. The lack of Opposition to the Dan Andrews Government has allowed them to send the state broke. The state budget tomorrow will detail a $31.5 billion “COVID-19 Debt Repayment Plan” for the costs the government occurred when it decided to repeatedly lockdown Victoria. Joe Biden cancelled his trip to Sydney for the Quad leaders meeting to deal with debt ceiling negotiations with Congress as the House Republicans are demanding spending cuts. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is set to announce his 2024 Presidential campaign. Donald Trump has already released an attack ad showcasing that it was his endorsement of DeSantis in 2018 that got him elected Governor. 89-year-old Democrat Californian Senator Dianne Feinstein returned to Capitol in a wheelchair after 3 months off after contracting shingles. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has backed Adam Schiff to succeed Feinstein in the Senate however there are moves to expel him from the House over his role in Chairing the Trump-Russia collusion hoax investigation after the release of the Durham report. New York nurse Sarah Comrie is suing mainstream media outlets who labelled her a racist Karen with 5 black teens preventing her from riding home a hire bike she paid for after a 12-hour shift by claiming they paid for the bike. Donald Trump Jr is visiting the Australian East Coast in July hosted by Turning Point Australia. There is already a petition to lobby the Albanese Government to deny Trump Jr a visa.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Van Badham and Ben Davison take a closer look at Labor's proposed housing fund, why the Green opposition doesn't stack up and why the Dutton position remains the worst of all possible outcomes. With debate still raging about "the best" housing policies Labor's policy achieves some core outcomes. More homes, a mechanism that Dutton can't easily scrap and an acknowledgement of the physical limitation imposed by supply chains and the availability of skilled workers. The Green "Build all the homes now, just not in our backyard" policy lacks the pre-requisite of being based in reality. Today is IDAHOBIT and Van and Ben discuss how communities have done the work to make progress on LGBTQIA+ rights and the difference between changes that need symbolic or small resource shifts but large cultural shifts and issues that need large scale resource reallocation. The union movement campaigned for and won protections for trans, intersex and gender diverse workers in the Fairwork Act, has helped raise wages by the largest amount since 2013 and is currently campaigning for a 7% minimum wage increase. You can join these campaigns at australianunions.org.au/wow Van and Ben discuss how the bosses lobby continues to fight against wage increases and even denies the role of profits in raising inflation. The InterPride podcast series, InterPod, The Global Voices of Pride Podcast, where the world comes together for the LGBTQIA+ community, is proud to launch our 36th episode, The Elephant in the Room Series | Part One with Mino Likwasi, with series host Richard Brethour-Bell, Vice President, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion | Co-Chair, Human Rights Committee | Coordinator, Racism & Oppression Awareness Program (ROAP) at InterPride. The LGBTQIA+ community has come a long way in the fight for acceptance. However, our voices matter and will be heard. Many LGBTQIA+ community members have fought for decades for the right to be seen and heard. About Episode 36 On this IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia, and Transphobia, we're proud to feature the first episode of the “Elephant in the Room” series as part of our Racism & Oppression Awareness Program (ROAP). Let's address all forms of oppression in our community, including anti-Blackness and racism. About Our Guest Speaker Mino Likwasi (they/them) Mino Likwasi is a Zambian queer activist who co-founded the Women's Alliance for Equality (WAFE). When Mino and their colleague noticed that visibility and interventions were mostly targeted at gay men, they decided to form WAFE, which aims to create a space for LBQ voices to be amplified within the broader LGBTQIA+ movement in Zambia. Along with being the co-founder of WAFE, Mino is also a trustee of The Other Foundation. About Our Series Host Richard Brethour-Bell (he/him) Richard Brethour-Bell (Vice President, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion | Co-Chair, Human Rights Committee | Coordinator, Racism & Oppression Awareness Program at InterPride) was raised in South Central Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he became one of the few inner-city students chosen to attend school in the affluent West San Fernando Valley of L.A. County. After graduating high school, Richard could not afford to attend college. However, the dream of becoming a college graduate never left him. After struggling with his sexuality for decades, Richard began to live his authentic life in his 30s. He met his partner James Brethour in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2008, and the two married in James' native Toronto, Canada, in 2010. They now live in Los Alamos, NM. The moment Richard accepted his truth, he began to fight for equality. He spoke before the New Mexico State Senate, demanding the right to marry after witnessing friends lose their homes and financial security when a partner died. He joined the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance (HRA), the organization that produces Santa Fe Pride and became president. The organization created an LGBT+ Presidential Scholarship for the local community college. In addition to leading the HRA, Richard has served as Region 3 director, CAPI VP, and WorldPride Co-Chair. Richard and James started a small business, and Richard completed college, earned a Master's in Healthcare Administration, received a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Disabilities (LEND) fellowship, and is now in the process of completing a Special Education Teaching certification. As V.P. of Accessibility, Diversity & Inclusion, I will continue to promote equality and equity to continue the evolution of InterPride. We've made strides, but now is not the time to rest on our laurels and continue striving for growth, inclusion, and accessibility.
