Third Person met up with the incredible folks from Worldbuilding for Masochists to discuss what it's like worldbuild as a team. Worldbuilding means getting to “play god” – so how does that take a different shape when you're part of a pantheon rather than the One True Ruler of your world? Xen, Matt Roen, and Sara Wile, the creative trio behind Midst, a surreal sci-fi fantasy audio drama now produced by Critical Role Productions, join Worldbuilding for Masochists to discuss co-creating a world and the stories that happen within it! When working as a team, how do you divide the labor? What's the balance of talents on your team, and how can you best get those skills to flow together? Words, art, sounds, shapes, motion -- all these tools can help to tell a larger story. How is co-worldbuilding for an audio drama like or unlike other forms of cooperative storytelling, like theater, gaming, and immersive experiences? We also discuss the joy of crafting the intricate details of a world and how creating the tiny details can actually communicate a great deal about the worldbuilding. Learn more about your ad choices. [Transcript TK] Our Guests: The trio (also known as Third Person) are master world-builders. Their newest series in the Midst Cosmos, UNEND, takes listeners on a cosmic journey with an unconventional crew aboard a mysterious, supernatural ship—a story with the adventurous, space-western spirit of Firefly. The story combines psychological depth, moral ambiguity, and unexpected humor, brought to life by their unique collaborative process. They divide creative roles—Xen (sounds), Sara (pictures), and Matt (words)—yet approach every stage of worldbuilding as a team. The Midst Cosmos is the surreal, reality-bending, sci-fantasy setting of our three standalone series: Midst, Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story, and our new addition UNEND. Talking place several decades after the events of Midst and Moonward, UNEND focuses on a supernatural ship and a remarkable crew set forth on an expedition to explore the highest heights, deepest depths, and furthest reaches of the known cosmos. But their journey is fraught with peril as they discover truths and realities far stranger than any of them could ever have imagined. Fast forward a few decades and Drew's son Arlo asked "Bear King" (the name he calls Bob) to tell him a "wind story." That prompted Bob to create this podcast series, drawing on the arc of the adventure books he loved as a kid and continuing the tradition of naming characters loosely on children's names. Grandsons Arlo is "Loar" and Oren is "Roen." Grandnieces Aurora, Delaney and Allessandra are featured, too. They visit neighborhoods where family members live. Before he retired from the TriMet transit agency, Bob oversaw the architectural design of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People over the Willamette River. He also managed the agency's alternative energy projects. Today, Bob lives in a Portland high-rise "sky cave" condo tower by the river, bridge and Ross Island.

In episode two we chat about our current favorite candle brands under $30 with the disclaimer that we are two women in a world with thousands of candle companies - we haven't even scratched the surface yet so consider this our first of many chats about affordable candle brands we love. In this episode we chat about four companies we've tried and wholeheartedly recommend. Roen - favorite scents: Ojai Nuit and Bisou Bisou East York Street - favorite scents: Tomato & Tobacco Leaf, Rosemary & Oud, the entire limited Wes Anderson collection - fingers crossed Hannah makes more! PF Candle - favorite scents: Teakwood & Tobacco, Swell, Dusk Borough Home - favorite scent: Night Fever Unofficial Sponsor: PF Candle - use the promo code HOSMER to save 15% on pfcandleco.com Ashley's favorite PF Candle items: large Teakwood & Tobacco candle, incense cones, hand & body wash Diane's favorite PF Candle items: Dusk & Moonrise candles from the Sunset collection And a huge shoutout to friend of the pod, Dominique, for helping name our candle rating system. We will be reviewing candles based on our Triple Wick theory. This looks at the overall aesthetics (which includes the vessel, packaging, branding and unboxing experience), the quality (ingredients, throw, how well it burns, and scent complexity), and lastly the price point - is it affordable, mid tier or luxury - to determine how many wicks get awarded to each candle. So a candle that just has one thing going for it will have small wick energy, a candle that has two out of the three will have big wick energy and a candle with all three will be our elusive magnum. Thank you so much Dominique for helping us name this! Give Dominique a follow on instagram @dommdotcom. How to Be a Better DM
A Simple D&D Session Structure to Help Prepare Your Sessions

How to Be a Better DM

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2022 10:00

You all finish your long-rest and you wake up to a bright, if not bitter cold winter morning. The view from the mountaintop lookout on which you slept is breathtaking, as is the chilling wind that blows. You all slept comfortably thanks to the warmth of the fire. As you all wake up you prepare for the day, memorizing your spells, stretching your sore limbs and generally preparing yourselves for whatever may come next, except one of you. Roen the druid, as you wake up you are met with the sight of a small brown squirrel sitting before you, patiently waiting for you to awaken. Tied around the squirrels neck is a tiny scroll of parchment. Naturally, you reach down and untie the scroll and unroll it. As you do, the squirrel scampers off into the trees. The scroll is very small yet is crammed with writing. The writing is clumsy as if it was written with charcoal rather than a quill and ink.  On the parchment is a line of text that turns your heart to ice. “Help. Captured by Xyxyx in Waterdeep. Cynthia.” And that is where we will end today's session. Welcome back to the 29th episode of How to Be a Better DM. I'm your host, Justin Lewis and I'm here to help you craft better stories for yourself and your players as you DM Dungeons and Dragons 5e. Before we get to the show let's go through a couple of announcements.  First, I hope you all enjoyed our last episode where you all met our new team member, Tanner Weyland. If you have any comments or questions for him or me, send us a direct message at @geronimolevis through Instagram. Next, today's show is brought to you by our monthly newsletter. You can sign up using the link in the show notes and get access to extra tips on being a DM, behind the scenes content and extra homebrew pieces that you can use in your campaigns. You can also sign up to play a one-shot with myself as your DM. This is first come first serve so sign up for the newsletter and let's play a session together. Now, to the show. Planning your sessions can often be the most difficult part of playing D&D. Sometimes it helps to have a general structure to your sessions. Well let's look at this simple D&D structure. What happened last time One of the most important things you can do to start off a good session is a recap of the session before. This gives your players a chance to get into character and into the game. It also serves as a nice way to transition out of friendly chatter and into playing a game where you have to be quiet while the DM talks. Lastly, it's great to remind your players what happened last because they've probably forgotten.  Resolve what happened last time Finish what you started last time. If you had just started an encounter, then run the encounter. If you left off on a cliff hanger then run through what implied the cliff hanger. Sometimes though, it makes for a nice twist to not resolve what you started but that is an advanced technique. Ask about Character's Backstories At this point, ask if every person's back story has been featured lately. If not, add in something that relates to the backstory of someone. It doesn't need to be in depth but it can be.  Add the next main plot point Think about the next logical plot point and prepare that. Pretty simple. Just beware, you will not be able to plan for everything. I like to ask myself the question, “What would I logically do next?” And then I prepare for that. Then I ask myself, “If I didn't do that, what would I logically do?” Then I prepare for that. Then we end up doing neither of those things and doing something completely random that my players came up with at the moment. Se la vie. Prepare at least one encounter Most often your players expect to fight something  So I find it helpful to have at least one combat encounter in my back pocket. The best way to do this is using D&D Beyond's encounter builder. It's a great way to save an encounter...
