Idora Park was much more than just the largest amusement park that ever existed in Oakland. Developed by real estate moguls who also owned a network of electric streetcars, this “mecca of pleasure seekers” played a significant role in the development of the East Bay, especially after the park sheltered thousands of refugees following San Francisco's devastating 1906 earthquake. Idora served as a showcase for cutting edge technological marvels, it helped launch the careers of several early Hollywood superstars, and it functioned as a vast testing ground for the emerging amusement industry until its closure in 1928. Nearly a century after Idora Park was bulldozed into history, curator Justin Limoges is resurrecting the memory of this mostly forgotten landmark through his upcoming “Idora Idora” exhibit*. In addition to showcasing historical materials, “Idora Idora” will explore the relationship between the amusement park and the very unique neighborhood that now exists in its footprint. In order to stimulate all the senses, Limoges has also commissioned an Idora-themed fragrance and an original song, performed by Greg Gardner with Jeremy Brown, Cass McCombs, and Ben Sigelman. [*The exhibit's site isn't live yet, but I'll post links on social media as soon as it's up.] Listen now to hear my conversation with Justin Limoges about what Idora Park's history can teach us about the evolution of amusement, collective memory, and the development of Oakland in the early 20th century. There's an opportunity within the business to make it better. There's an opportunity for individual people to take a step up during these times. When something unplanned hits, you always have an opportunity to step in somewhere."Why you need to learn storytelling in sales, says Greg: "In my opinion, I think one of the key things that a noob can do is learn stories. Be able to recite them. You could actually wake up at 3 am and recite five stories for different verticals, different industries or what have you. I would've spent all my time doing that instead of worrying about whether I was gonna know the answer to some technical question."Greg's tip on deciding the company and kind of sales job you like doing: "Sometimes you need to not think of it in terms of I want to work for this company or this industry and I want to be in this position. Think about, okay, what do your best days look like? When you really feel like you're engaged and living life to the fullest, what does that look like? Gardner Homes is using canibuild's product. They chat about what major trends can be seen in the ConTech industry and what is upcoming for canibuild. They want answers quickly and they want transparency. - Timothy Customers have a huge thirst for knowledge. - Simon Keywords: Construction, ConTech, technology, built environment About Our Guests: Timothy Cocaro, CEO/Founder of canibuild Timothy Cocaro possesses the unlikely mix of being both a builder by trade and a holder of a computer science degree. Timothy's tenure as Founder and CEO of Australia's leading Granny Flat company, provided the necessary insight to see and, more importantly, understand the pain points of the construction industry. This led Timothy to put his degree in computer science to use by creating a modern solution, that genuinely aligns with the needs of the construction industry. In 2019, Timothy hung up his hard hat when he became Founder and CEO of canibuild, a world-first, hypergrowth Prop Tech that is transforming the construction landscape. canibuild was developed to be the solution to the many root problems in the construction industry with its AI engine allowing home, pool, granny flat & other builders to instantly check site feasibility, site costs, generate site plans & produce quotes with just a click. canibuild has gained unprecedented traction across the construction industry since its inception, with thousands of searches on the platform every day. canibuild has re-energised the industry by providing its subscribers the ability to be hyper-efficient at a time when the market is booming. canibuild canibuild allows builders to replace the need for physical site visits, drafting, surveying, estimating and instead optimising this complex series of high friction steps into an instant point of transaction. canibuild clients can now go from seeing a project site virtually with a client to contract instantly. This not only allows builders to be more efficient but also covers a much wider area geographically which is a game-changer in an industry that is so fragmented. Timestamps: [02:45] Timothy: Can you talk us through your journey to founding canibuild? I have a background in computer science and in the .com crash, I moved over to construction where I spent a few years developing a construction company that focused in the granny flat industry. During my boots on the ground experience, I tried to see how technology can better improve construction and one aspect is how construction is sold. We have been developing our application for 6 years and we went to market 2 years ago. [05:45] Timothy: Can you elaborate a bit more about your product? Client facing sales application tool for construction companies that condenses all the steps involved in construction into a single transaction. It does all the compliance and visually shows how that build looks on that block of land, it also takes into account factors such as contours so all parties can visually see what's happening. [08:25] Simon: Can you talk us through your role when it comes down to innovation technology and how you came across Tim's business, canibuild? We're a residential builder, building mainly for mum and dads, but more importantly, we're a franchised business. canibuild technology came to us from one of our salespeople - a client walked into the office and had a print out of an outcome of what this tech does and in a short space of time, we adopted the technology. [11:15] Timothy: How much time does this save? You have to imagine that a sales consultant needs to answer quite a few questions that might presumably look easy. The back and forth process might take weeks but canibuild collapses all of those down to potentially the same day. [13:45] Simon: This product must allow you to retain buyers and not let them go to competitors, can you elaborate? The one thing you don't want to do is detach from your customer but rather demonstrate knowledge. This allows us to show the customer in real time and keep the conversation going without detaching. [16:15] Simon: How have you gone about upskilling your 80-90 consultants? We brought this technology in early in 2020, nicely coinciding with the lockdowns so we trained all of our team remotely and in one session. Our house designs are preloaded onto the software. We had a sales conference at some point, which Tim presented. [17:35] Simon: Have you seen an increase in sales or customers? The market over the last 18 months has been incredibly buoyant so it is difficult to judge. We can have a look at how the performance is and we can have a look at the uptake. We can also see if it is utilising the software or not. The feedback from the new hands consultants has been overwhelmingly positive. [18:50] Simon: When did you start looking at your innovation strategy? Was it pre- or post-COVID? The brand has always operated off its own software and in 2019 there was a redesign of the software to move to a cloud based system and that encompasses all aspects that we need to run these businesses. We use 2 external pieces of technology, canibuild and HazardCo. [20:25] Timothy: What is next for the growth and development of your product? Continue expanding on the features of the system to be able to better help our clients. We are releasing a 3D component as well as doing site costs automatically. There are marketplace opportunities like bushfire reports and engineer reports and even architectural reports, particularly in the pool industry. We are expanding our footprint in the United States. [22:00] Both: Are there any major trends which you can pick out across construction and what are you forecasting for the next couple of years? Timothy: Builders have started to adopt technology in ways that they haven't, prior to COVID. Simon: Customers have a thirst for knowledge, so when they are walking through a display home for the first time, they know a lot about us. Simon: We need to bring customers along for the journey, especially in construction. [27:00] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about; L – Touch on the main lessons you have learnt throughout your career. Timothy: Start early, get your hands dirty and build a business that doesn't scale, you can worry about the scaling later. Simon: Self-belief and never stop learning. M - Please give a mention to anyone / product / service. Timothy: All our current clients. Simon: Tim and his team. R – What has been the most rewarding aspect of working in PropTech? Timothy: Nothing more rewarding than seeing a mum, dad and their family move into their home. E - What are you excited about in the future of PropTech? Timothy: Stay positive and keep pushing forward. Simon: All the things I don't know about tech. Links I talk about: Join the Mastermind How to Be a Transformative Principal Cybertraps Podcast Webinar this month will be with Julia King Pool around communication Where I’m at now. Consulting - mastermind leadership team trainings, cybertraps. Talk about student driven learning academy Kids wanting schedules for themselves (and unique) Center for Cyberethics Cybertraps podcast Mastermind - single best Pd for principals. Links to other podcasts about it. Got some stuff in the hopper. Episode 400 This is that special time where I give some updates about what is going on in my life. As you may know, several of my podcast episodes are recorded ahead of time. So, I like to give these updates at around the 50-show mark. First things first, last June, I left being a principal to focus entirely on serving principals and schools through consulting. It’s been awesome. I’m really enjoying it, although I was a little nervous to leave education when Coronavirus hit and there was time to do things so differently. But, thankfully, I’ve been able to help others through this challenge this last year. Consulting So, what does my consulting look like? Well, first and foremost, the mastermind has doubled in size since last year. It’s the best professional development out there for principals. We have talked so much about all the powerful stuff that people have learned during the pandemic and it has really been good. In fact, Bill Clouse, who you may remember said this, just last week in our mastermind. The mastermind is the best professional development out there. Period. It’s amazing. We help leaders overcome imposter syndrome, make better decisions, have more empathy, and so much more. Oh, and by the way, they are happier at work than ever before. If you’re listening to this, you’ve probably thought about the mastermind, and you’ve probably had some trepidation about whether or not you should join it. Maybe the times haven’t worked out, maybe the cost seemed too high. Well, I have just the thing for you. You see, I’m in the process of writing my next book, How to be a Transformative Principal, and I’ve discovered through the 399 previous episodes of this podcast that there are some key strategies that all transformative principals have in common. It’s quite fascinating, actually. There are 12 things that all transformative principals have in place, and each month, I teach one of these four things in my “How to be a Transformative Principal” group. If you’re not quite ready for the mastermind. Maybe you’re an aspiring principal, maybe you’re an AP. or maybe you’re working on your doctorate! This is the program to help you get there. On the shownotes for this podcast, jethrojones.com/400! you can find the links for this. Here’s what comes in that: 1. 1 Monthly coaching call with me and all the other participants (including mastermind members, who get this for free) 2. A newsletter describing each strategy and what you action items you can take to make it better. 3. A monthly webinar about the topic we are studying. For March, we were focusing on our people, and Dr. Greg Gardner gave a wonderful webinar about how he has removed obstacles for his people during Coronavirus. For April, we are talking about Communication. Communication is HUGE, right? Our coaching call will be all about improving communication. Our webinar this month will be with Julia King Pool around communication. She is the founder at burninmindset.com, so you’ll definitely want to register for that session! Then, in May, oh, my goodness, I am so excited! Cassandra Williams actually does teacher observations for a living. Like, that’s her whole job. She comes into your school and works specifically with your teachers to help them improve. it’s like having an instant instructional coach. So, she’s going to talk about what you need to focus on with observations. And we’re doing that at the end of the year to help you set a good intention for next school year. I’m also doing consulting and speaking around the topics of Trauma-informed practicies and Leadership team development. If you’d like to get in touch with me about those opportunities, please reach out at jethrojones.com/speaking and I’ll be happy to plan something with you. I already have two weeks in August booked out, so get in touch soon. Student Driven Learning You know also, that I am very interested in student driven learning. Well, this year, when we moved to washington, we knew that online school for my three younger kids wouldn’t be great. Kids just went back hybrid this last week. So, we did something a little different. I started a micro school for just my kids, called student driven learning academy. It’s been amazing to see my three youngest really strive in different ways there. Is it perfect, you know it’s not! But, after a couple months, we thought it would be beneficial for them to have some other support, so we hired a learning consultant to help them. That’s been great. Her name is Hannah Costello, and you heard her on this podcast. In fact, when she said, on that podcast, “I don’t want to teach a class, I want to facilitate learning,” I was sold. That’s exactly what I was looking for. She’s done a great job sharing resources with my kids, but letting them own their learning. A couple things that have been great about my kids doing homeschool like this: They are developing their own personalities and learning interests. Each one of them has said they enjoy being in charge of what they are learning. They are learning the power they have to determine their destiny. This is a little esoteric, but I think it is so important. They are starting to understand more and more that the course their life takes is up to them. This is a really important skill that I know will help them more and more as life goes on for them. It’s something I hope they never forget. What’s that going to look like in the future? I’m not sure, but I’m excited about where it can go! Center for Cyberethics You have probably also heard that I have another podcast I started called Cybertraps. That’s with my friend Frederick Lane, author of the Cybertraps books. I’ve always loved technology, but I got tired of teaching how to use google docs pretty quickly. I want to talk about big ideas in technology and that’s what we do on that podcast. We’ve delved into a bunch of amazing discussions and I have really enjoyed it. We’ve had some amazing guests on there, and I’ll share a few of the favorite things we’ve heard here. First up is an excert from Tony Anscombe, an evangelist at technology company ESET, who provides cybersecurity support. where he talked about parents believing that there child is not one who is going to be doing something inappropriate online. Tony Anscombe 1 Another interview that was just amazing was with Dr. Jeff Temple, and he does research on preventing sexual violence. He’s out of the Univeristy of Texas Medical Branch, and he has some really great information to share. He talks about the real problem with sexting is the coersion that happens when kids sext. [Jeff Temple 7] Also, Dr. Eric Stephens talked about what critical thinking is. What is amazing about his story is that he wanted to help prison populations without violating their privacy. So, he used big data to understand what the rehabilitation process is in prison systems. Really fascinating stuff! [Eric stephens 5] Charles Logan talked about student surveillance, and treating students as criminals that haven’t been caught yet. He asked us to think about the relationship between schools and their students. [Charles Logan 3] That’s just a few of the guests that we have had on. And we have so many more coming out. Be sure to subscribe to that podcast ata cybertraps.com In fact, we are doing more than just a podcast, we are doing a whole non-profit called the Center for Cyberethics. There’s even a twitter account CTR4Cyberethics! There’s going to be a lot more coming out about that. Cybertraps.com and sign up for the mailing list there. One thing we recently launched is a Raising Cyberethical Kids audio course that will help you as a parent create a family acceptable use policy. Just the conversation about that alone will be amazing. Again, links to that in the shownotes at jethrojones.com/400 If you’d like to get that for your whole school, reach for site license options. Something not ready yet. There’s one other thing that I’m just not quite ready to announce yet, but it’s going to be great. A lot of people have reached out for help with creating podcast. After so many episodes, I’ve figured out a lot of things with podcasting, and I want to share it and help others. There’s also a lot of people that have asked for help in starting to do more than teach or be a principal as a way to give back to the community. I’m not ready to announce it yet, but it’s getting close! If that’s something you’re interested in, reach out and I’ll let you know as soon as it is ready. Look for that in June. Finally, I just want to say Thank you for making this one of the best podcasts out there. It means the world to me. I honestly can’t believe that this is episode 400! I wouldn’t have continued if you hadn’t been listening. If you haven’t ever spoken to me, and you’re still listening, you’re obviously one of my people. Please send me a message. I’d love to talk with you and tell you thank you, and hear your experience with this podcast. Thanks again for listening, and please, seriously, reach out and say hello. If you’ve been listening for years, please leave a rating in Apple Podcasts or whatever else you listen in. And please, share your favorite episode with other principals, and let’s help more people become transformative principals. Every great ride has to end sometime: whether it’s at the amusement park or the retail world. For instance, most auto analysts predict the U.S. car market will soon slow down; everyone, seemingly, other than John Murphy of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. In fact, Mr. Murphy is so stoked he’s doubling down per his data which says the good times for the auto industry will continue to roll into the 2020s. Joining host John McElroy to discuss John Murphy’s antithetical view of the auto economy is Joann Muller from Forbes.com and Greg Gardner from the Detroit Free Press.

Family It's often said that the most important part of human life is family. Despite the fact that you may argue with your father on almost everything or your Aunt Rose still squeezes your checks at 35, being able to gather, celebrate and mourn together is unique to the human existence. Plus, that structure provides a perfect environment, which allows us to learn from one another, perhaps about our heritage or maybe life itself. Of course when it comes to corporations things are a little different to say the least, however, some do embrace the family structure for a variety of reasons. In the automotive industry, for instance, a company like Toyota offers customers three distinct brands that are aimed at different socioeconomic groups. The youngest member of that family, Scion, was created just a few short years ago and provides the entire corporate unit a young and unique set of products and customers. Jack Hollis is in charge of Scion in North America and he joins John McElroy on this week's edition of Autoline Detroit. Mike Ramsey from the Wall Street Journal and Greg Gardner of the Detroit Free Press join in the discussion.
