Gurpurab commemorates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev ji, the first Sikh Guru. Gurpurab, one of the most holy holidays, falls on the Guru Purniama of the Kartik month. Guru Nanak Jayanti otherwise called Gurpurab, is the main celebration for the devotees of the religion of Sikhism. The celebration is celebrated on arrival of Kartik Poornima, which is the fifteenth lunar day in the long stretch of Kartik as depicted by the Hindu schedule, and typically falls in the period of November by the Gregorian schedule. The celebrations in Gurudwaras begin two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti. Akhand Path is a 48-hour continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. A parade named Nagarkirtan is organised a day before Guru Nanak's birthday. The march is led by five men known as the Panj Pyare, who carry the Nishan Sahib, a Sikh three-sided flag. On the day of Gurpurab, a unique Langar is served. The concept of Langar was first started by Guru Nanak Ji himself. Night prayer sessions are also held at several Gurdwaras on this special day. The list of nine other Sikh Gurus who preached the teachings of Guru Nanak Ji are: Guru Angad Ji Guru Amar Das Ji Guru Ram Das Ji Guru Arjan Ji Guru Hargobind Ji Guru Har Rai Ji Guru Har Krishan Ji Guru Teg Bahadur Ji Guru Gobind Singh Ji Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/chimesradio See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now that most pandemic restrictions on houses of worship have been lifted, the Sikh Institute of Fresno looks much like it did pre-COVID. On a recent Sunday at this 3-story, salmon-colored temple known as a gurdwara, people stream in and out of the main worship hall, some wearing traditional saris and kurtas, others in t-shirts and jeans. While they circle the altar, a trio of men playing harmoniums and tabla drums sing hymns known as kirtan in the Northern Indian language of Punjabi. Outside, families wait in long lines for bubbling trays of vegetable curry, lentils and roti on the way to the langar hall, a cafeteria where they can eat and catch up with friends. But on this day, classrooms decked out with chalkboards and bright posters that are typically used for Punjabi school have been repurposed. Sitting in one of them is 13-year-old Navleen Kaur. “A lot of people are getting sick, and for them we are getting the vaccine,” she said. This room is the observation area of a pop-up

Few cathedrals are accessible to the elderly and vulnerable who need to be vaccinated immediately – but fortunately Lichfield, which was built as a medieval centre of healing for pilgrims, was built with step-free access way back in the 12th century. Sophia Smith-Galer reports. Monday the 18th January is Martin Luther King day, a public holiday in the USA. Sikhism is a Punjabi (Indian) religion that goes back some 500 years, and as a devotional singer/ songwriter Manika's goal is to modernize the context and of the old religious texts so that young Sikhs all over the world can connect to and benefit from their messages. Manika won the 2016 Sikh Award for Sikhs in Entertainment and has amassed over 10,000,000 views on YouTube. Manika's other passion is her philanthropic work. She tirelessly campaigns for the eradication of poverty in rural Punjab via her work with the organisation Kirtan for Causes. All profits from sales of her albums and live concerts are donated directly to the charity, which supports the education of disadvantaged youth via sponsorship schemes. Manika personally sponsors and educates 200 children. In 2015 she gave a sold-out concert at London's prestigious Union Chapel and she has been invited to sing in Gurdwaras around the world. Manika has been featured on the BBC Radio, ABC Australia and more. We talked about the reality of life in Punjab including farmer suicide and cervical cancer; we talked about what drives her personally and professionally, her difficulty as a misfit child and how that has become a source of strength, how important it is to love and look after oneself. Arranged marriage. Her upcoming book. My favourite line of the interview was "A child gives birth to a mother – and he gave birth to a strong one." This weeks episode the show is c-hosted and we return to our normal format of meanings, history, stories, a shabad translation and inspirational music - We look at the importance of Gurdwaras and the life of Guru Hargobin Ji - Our shabad translation features the shabad - Mera Mujhme sung by Chitra Roy. We close the show with a track by Elton John suggesting that we should be truly gratful for what we have - We suggest that humanity helps each other, especially in a world of unfortunate inequality.
