Un recital de explosiones ‘made by Michael Bay'.

This week we are talking about the 1998 disaster movie Armageddon with our guest Steven Brogan Cortez! When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J., who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise. Old Millennials Remember Movies

An asteroid the size of Texas that literally "roars" as it approaches Earth perfectly represents the over-the-top and punishing nature of Michael Bay's "Armageddon," a movie with about 1,000 action sequences, 10,000 one-liners and roughly 65 million cuts. No single shot lasts more than a second or so. It may not be a great movie, but it's definitely the MOST movie of the 1990s. "Armageddon" is a fascinating stop for Jerry Bruckheimer, a producer mostly known for R-rated action movies. With a shiny PG-13, and a "Titanic"-feeling romantic subplot between Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, "Armageddon" lured hordes of teenagers to the multiplex, and they all got a full helping of Bruce Willis machismo and bizarre Steve Buscemi horn-doggery. Old Millennnials Remember 'Armageddon' Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela have vivid memories of experiencing "Armageddon" in the summer of 1998. There were packed auditoriums of sobbing adults (damn you, Harry Stamper for breaking your promise!), McDonald's mini-posters hung on walls and two different soundtracks purchased (probably) at Sam Goody (the Aerosmith-centric album and the Trevor Rabin score). Years later, even an A.J. Frost action figure might be purchased. Both hosts loved the movie as teenagers... then at some point, the assaultive pacing and relentless action just stops being fun. This movie blows up everything... entire cities, multiple space shuttles/vehicles, even the damn opening title card gets blasted to smithereens. Nuclear bombs get set off too early, Affleck jumps over the Asteroid Grand Canyon and Steve Buscemi gets space dementia. And yet, there are moments of "Armageddon" that still demonstrate why the movie became such a massive hit. The cast, which includes welcome faces like Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Clarke Duncan, Owen Wilson, Ruskie Peter Stormare, Cooper from "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper," plus the already mentioned leads (Affleck rules in this movie; fight us!), deliver some solid laughs, and, every now and then, Michael Bay stages some stirring sequences, usually the ones without the explosions. We've got just five words for you: Go pack a big bag of Animal Crackers because you won't want to miss a thing of this episode of OMRM. That's like 11 words or something. "This period of time in the Thirties struck me as a period of great innovation and resilience that women organized around the need to provide certain services. The highest-grossing film of 1998 that was nominated for four Oscars (yes), “Armageddon,” makes its also-awful counterpart “Deep Impact” look like “Citizen Kane.” This explosion-(in space?)-filled blockbuster is another in the painful pop culture cancer filmographies of director Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that likes to remind its audience 500 times that America can do no wrong. Bruce Willis plays Harry Stamper, “the best” deep sea oil driller to ever live, who is asked by NASA to dig 800 feet down into a bound-for-earth Texas-sized angry astroid, place a nuke in it, and blow it up without dying. Ben Affleck plays A.J. Frost, Harry’s best employee who is banging his daughter and likes to hotdog too much, do bad standup bits about animal crackers, sing awfully, and force us to listen to his bad Australian accent. Liv Tyler plays Willis’ daughter, Grace, whose only job in this movie is to be in love with A.J. and to scream at everyone in Mission Control, who strangely allow her in the room. Oh, and be about to have sex while her actual dad serenades her via the soundtrack. Ew. Billy Bob Thornton plays Dan Truman, who fills the Ed Harris in “Apollo 13” role as the leader in NASA's Mission Control room. They squeeze in some bizarre backstory for him where he has Forrest Gump braces on his legs and therefore couldn't be an astronaut. And of course there's the rag-tag crew of Bruce Willis’ drillers that includes Steve Buscemi (who plays a genius pedophile), Owen Wilson (who plays a super annoying cowboy geologist), Will Patton (who plays a gambling-addicted dude who only kind of wants his family back), and Michael Clarke Duncan (who plays a giant dude who cries a lot and wears leopard-print undies). There’s also some lame astronauts (gross) and a bunch of cameos by awful ‘90s comedians. Join us as we discuss the awful dialogue (“We’re all daddies, here”), mail-order brides, and the fine country of Samoa. After 79 episodes, it's finally time to talk Armageddon. Michael Bay's 1998 masterpiece has been both acclaimed and reviled over the years; it's one of the rare big-budget films to get a Criterion Collection release, and one of the true gems in Bay's otherwise-shaky filmography. Does this ridiculous, America-loving movie hold up? Do we still love Bruce Willis as world-saver Harry Stamper? And is Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" the greatest movie theme of all time? Spoiler alert: yes to all of the above.

Jenn is also the director the opening film from Frightfest 2018, The Ranger! Her chosen film? Armageddon! Directed by the Master of Mayhem, Michael Bay, and featuring a gargantuan, and frankly brilliant, cast, Armageddon is the summer blockbuster you love to hate, despite it being the highest grossing film of 1998. Is the hate valid? Is there more to this driller thriller than meets the eye?   The synopsis is as follows:  When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J., who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise. It's episode 134... and this is how we fix problem in the Russian space station! Armageddon (1998) tells the story of Harry Stamper and his crew of high-testosterone, middle-American, low-rate oil rig workers. After a meteor the size of Texas is detected, headed towards earth, the crew are trained as astronauts and sent into space so they can drill into the asteroid and blow it up with nuclear bombs.  No, really. We talk about the mismatch in on-the-job training given to oil rig workers in comparison to astronauts; the questionable decision to give the highest level of clearance to a civilian with two horses in the race; and the benefits of falling in love with your boss's daughter. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: I am not crazy! I'm just a little emotional right now, ok? Ya'll throwing all this stuff at me, man! Look, I mean, after this is over, can I like get a hug from you or something? Another classic film solved by the best movie podcast in the world. General Snobbery | Film and Philosophy

Your daily life is simple.  It is idealistic.  Your values are strong and your morals are sound.  There is no reason, you think, that you and everything you know should be wiped out in a matter of seconds.  Too fucking bad asshole.  You're going to die! UNLESS! Harry Stamper was just a blue-collar oil driller.  He was smart, damn good at his job, and absolutely hated liberals of every kind.  He had a rag-tag team of strong Duncans and smart Wilsons.  All he wanted in his life was to run his rig, care for his daughter, and push his conservative agenda.  Too fucking bad asshole.  You're going to save the world! Armageddon is a baffling film.  It is horribly written, way to long, and espouses a stringent form of conservative ideology that exists in the realm of nostalgia-worship.  When an asteroid the "size of Texas" is headed toward your home, you suddenly realize that the ways things used to be seem a lot more appealing than the ways they are going to be.  Catch our drift?  Michael Bay basically said earth represents conservative values and the asteroid represents liberal values. Sean and Matt attempt to drill to the core of this movie, a movie that has so much that can be said about it that it is almost impossible to say anything at all about it.  A true anomaly of a film. At the core of this film is not a nuclear bomb, it is Michael Bay.  Actually, Michael Bay basically is a nuclear bomb in that both cause destruction and their proliferations are a question of morality.  The Man-child, Michael Bay, becomes a strong point of discussion in this Snob.  As always, Sean and Matt consider his intention, maturity, and whether he has absorbed the person of Jerry Bruckheimer.  (It is quite possible Michael Bay keeps Jerry Bruckheimer in a cage in his Ford Mustang garage, only letting Jerry out occasionally to do movie promotions.  To reference a film with much deeper themes, Jerry Bruckheimer is basically Michael Baby's Manchurian Candidate). If there is a redeeming light in this particular Snob, it is the brief reference to our personal friend, Jake Busey.  Aside from that, another triumph is when Sean and Matt realize they never have to watch this shit-film (probably scheizefilmische) ever again.  The truth of Being Toward Explosion (Sein Zum Explosion (yes, the English and German are the same)), remains O so real! Non-American directors seek to highlight profound questions in their action movies whereas American directors seek to highlight their sweet space suits.  Strap in, fight your space dimentia, and load your mini gun. We got somethin' big coming up. Zero Barrier! Fuck you!
