Daredevil 2003 came in the a wave of Marvel comic book success stories like Blade, Spider-Man and X-Men. Ben Affleck's Matt Murdoch however didn't manage to reach those same heights despite being a pretty solid action movie. For the time. How could it not with Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin, Colin Farrell in his first comic book villain role as Bullseye and Jennifer Garner as Elektra who recently returned in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Longest Yard is a total smorgasbord of tones, jokes, and cultural winks, whiffing at laughter from start to finish. We get a jail yard-sized salmagundi of half-baked jokes. Wet Willies. Terry Crewes peddling McDonald's cheeseburgers, fries, and McAssholes. Pegging the refs in the nuts. Dan Patrick cameo as a cop, clowning on Frodo. Goldberg rockin' an XXL jockstrap. Tracy Morgan as a prison yard Ladyboy. Adam Sandler drinking a six-pack during a high-speed chase. Chris Rock riffin' on white guys and Prozac. James Cromwell acting much too prestigiously for a Happy Madison project. Rob Schneider yelling, "You can do it!" as a callback to The Waterboy. Burt Reynolds hired as a nod to the much-superior original. Bob Sapp doing his best Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile impression. The Great Khali looking huge. Nelly, band-aid on his cheek and all. Jim Rome and Chris Berman being themselves, offering tongue-in-cheek color commentary. Kevin Nash, Brian Bosworth, and William Fichtner doing their best as prison guards, trying to infuse redemptive nuance into their villiany. Joey Diaz being chubby, homophobic, and unfunny. Steve Austin being stone-cold silly. Suffice to say, this one wasn't for us. But we do our best to tackle it anyway. Enjoy the smackdown!

The Forbidden Cinema crew take a moment to come out of our normal timeline to pay homage to the late, great Matthew Perry. This week we go all the way in to the distant future of the year 2000 to look at the Bruce Willis / Matthew Perry caper comedy, The Whole Nine Yards.  This critically mixed (but must have been commercially valid as there was a sequel) film had it's flaws, but at a brisk 98 minutes with credits and 2 musical numbers it flew by with some incredible physical comedy from an immensely likable cast. We welcome in Natasha Henstridge to the podcast without having done Species yet, Zack is flummoxed.  We have suicide humor, Harland Williams, and a delightful performance by Amanda Peet.  We both are shocked at how huge of a man, and how funny of a man Michael Clarke Duncan is.  We also spend some time talking about how an R rated comedy was released in the year 2000 targeted at adults, but not with post American Pie raunchy humor.

Get ready for another rollercoaster ride through the cinematic world of Bruce Willis in the latest episode of "Planet Bruce" with your hosts, the dynamic duo, Milenko and Aleks. This time, they're diving headfirst into the zany and darkly comedic world of the year 2000, and the movie in focus is none other than "The Whole Nine Yards."Set against the backdrop of Montreal, Quebec, this film boasts a stellar cast, including Matthew Perry, Rosanna Arquette, Michael Clarke Duncan, Natasha Henstridge, Amanda Peet, and Kevin Pollak. And of course, the one and only Bruce Willis takes on the role of a contract killer, setting the stage for a farcical chain of events that will have you in stitches. It's a tale of intrigue, a comedy of errors, and a dash of noir vibes, all rolled into one. The brothers delve into the film, and while they both agree it's a wild and fun watch, they can't help but point out some tonal issues. "The Whole Nine Yards" seems to straddle the line, never fully committing to being a pitch-black comedy. In the end, it might not be the most substantial film, but it's a competent and entertaining ride that leaves you with a smile on your face. And what's even more delightful is the hilarious and engaging conversation between the brothers as they dissect the film's quirks and highlights. So, join us for the latest episode of "Planet Bruce," where we explore the wild world of contract killers, farcical mishaps, and a touch of noir, all served with a generous side of laughter. Ladies and gentlemen, gear up for another thrilling episode of "Planet Bruce" with the dynamic duo, Aleks and Milenko! In this installment, the brothers journey back to 1998 to explore the classic blockbuster, "Armageddon," and trust us, it's anything but your typical space adventure. At first glance, it might appear as a tale of the "working man" Bruce Willis and his team of oil riggers, played by the likes of Steve Buscemi, Ben Affleck, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Owen Wilson, being called upon by NASA to embark on an extraordinary mission. The goal? To dig a hole in an asteroid and save the world from impending doom. It's supposed to be a story about hardworking folks proving they're just as resourceful as NASA scientists and government officials. But, here's the twist: as the brothers delve into the film, they uncover layers that are, to put it mildly, quite cringe-worthy. "Armageddon" ends up reading more like a crypto propaganda piece for the oil and gas industry, with peculiar moments like Bruce Willis starting the movie by shooting golf balls at Greenpeace protesters. The film's undertones take on a sinister feel when considering the current state of accelerating climate change, and the traditional values woven into the plot add to the complexity. Liv Tyler's character, though pivotal as Bruce's daughter, feels underdeveloped and is primarily used to fuel the tension surrounding her relationship with Ben Affleck's character. This dynamic becomes a battleground for traditional patriarchal values.Despite its questionable status as a "classic," the brothers have an engaging and thought-provoking conversation about the film, shedding light on its deeper themes and industry influences. Join us for another intriguing episode of "Planet Bruce," where nothing is as it seems, and the brothers never fail to keep the conversation lively and enlightening. It's become a tradition for us in recent history to cover a disaster film on or near the 4th Of July, so this year's choice is the Auteur Of Explosions, Michael Bay. Armageddon is crass, it has tonal problems, it's edited into incoherence, but, truth is truth, this blockbuster still worked on at least one of us. And we both acknowledge how entertaining it is. Bay's macho, in-your-face filmmaking style seems appropriate for a story about wisecracking oil drillers being asked to become spacemen and then save the planet from an asteroid coming to wipe out all life on the planet. We spent a lot of time mocking the "science", although tension and emotion help soothe SOME of those factual problems. What works best of all though is an eclectic cast, most of whom weren't stars yet (Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson, Michael Clarke Duncan). Of course, not even Affleck has ever gotten to be as big as Bruce Willis was then and continued to be for another decade. Oh, and Steve Buscemi! He always makes things better. So break out your American flag, shout "USA, USA" and give episode #522 of Have You Ever Seen some of your attention on this holiday weekend. Well, Actually: It's debatable to say that Bay's movies have never lost money. The Island, 13 Hours and Ambulance are 3 examples of his works that barely broke even worldwide. After you account for marketing costs, those 3 movies DID lose money. When you have a beverage sponsor, you want to be able to tell your listeners that they can get a 20% discount the next time they buy the product. Well, Sparkplug Coffee offers that. Let's find out together as we dissect the film from start to finish!TOPICS:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 51-minutes discussing the Oscar Nominations, who we think will win, standouts, and the Oscar's as an institution (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Daredevil has a director's cut with an additional 30+ minutes, content that does contextualize and improve a few plot details and subplots that otherwise are expedited in the theatrical cut.Although it's dependent on what the movie needs at the time, it's neat that this version of Daredevil is, in a way, more blind than the Marvel/Netflix Daredevil, who functionally can just “see” everything despite his condition. This version of Daredevil isn't particularly devout in his Catholicism, and parts of the initial R-rated pitch of the film are evident in the film's tone and violence. Both Colin Farrell's Bullseye and Michael Clarke Duncan's Kingpin are extreme highlights of the movie.Daredevil is noticeably truncated from a much longer cut which results in every sequence feeling like a lightly tethered series of decent scenes.Celebrating the dope early 2000's nu-metal, Hot Topic-esque licensed soundtrack which includes Rob Zombie and Evanescence. After rewatching Daredevil, 20 years later after its release, how do we feel about this early 2000's superhero relic?Recommendations:Born Standing Up by Steve Martin (Book)Overlord (2018) (Movie)We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! On this episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets all fun for the whole family with a polite, not-at-all crude conversation about the 2001 smash hit, Cats & Dogs! Is the CGI better in this film than in any of the prequels? How weird is it hearing Tobey Maguire voice this Aw Shucks gentle puppy? And are we to believe that Jeff Goldblum fathered this WASP child? PLUS: ScarJo and Colin discuss each other's work!  Cats & Dogs stars Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Perkins, Alexander Pollock, and Miriam Margolyes, with the voices of Tobey Maguire, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sean Hayes, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Clarke Duncan, Jon Lovitz, and Charlton Heston; directed by Lawrence Guterman.
