Nuala McGovern is joined by one woman who has had a huge impact on the women's game over many years - Hope Powell - the former Lioness head coach will discuss England's chances, the growth of the game and how to continue building a legacy for women's sport. A fifth of young women suffering a mental health crisis were asked if they were on their period, a new survey has found. Research by the prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) also found that women's calls for help were sometimes dismissed. We talk to Wendy Robinson, Head of Services at Suicide prevention charity, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) Dr Gladys McGarey, cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association, began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts. Now a 102 and still practicing as a doctor, she was born in India in 1920. She started medical school just before the Second World War, married a fellow doctor, Bill and together they practised medicine, first in Ohio, then In Arizona. They also produced six children. Dr Gladys has now written a book, The Well-Lived Life. Deirdre O'Kane became a stand-up comic in 1996, getting to the finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards of that year. A co-founder of Comic Relief in Ireland, she also fronted her own talk shows, Deirdre O'Kane Talks Funny on RTÉ as well as a brand-new series, The Deirdre O'Kane Show on Sky Max. One of Ireland's favourite comedians, she is also known for acting roles such as Chris O'Dowd's Moone Boy and the biopic of philanthropist and children's rights stalwart Christina Noble called Noble, for which she received an IFTA Award. Deirdre joins Nuala to discuss her wide-ranging career and her new stand up show Demented, which is coming to London's Soho Theatre this week. Barry Ritholtz, chief investment officer at Ritholtz Wealth Management, says the Federal Reserve has done a good job reducing inflation, but he worries that chairman Jerome Powell could over-tighten the economy into a recession, largely because the central bank is tied to models from the 1970s and following an outdated gameplan from that era that could make inflation worse today. In a wide-ranging conversation, Ritzholtz expresses a largely optimistic view predicated on the Fed's strategy not making difficult conditions worse than they need to be. Also on the show, Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist for The Technical Traders, says that the big indexes have 'hit a wall,' and that the market needs to gather itself with a sideways move or slight step-back before it can break out of its current range. Plus, in the latest edition of 'Find Me The Money,' forensic accountant Tracy Coenen talks about the spending and money-movement patterns that are telltale signs that family money is being diverted, noting that there aren't many ways a spouse can hide money once their partner knows where to look.

Rachel Pavlou was described as the most selfless person in women's football by former England coach (and a previous guest on this podcast) Hope Powell. Rachel has over 30 years of sports development experience, specialising in the development of women's football at The FA for almost 25 years. Rachel is currently the FA Women's Development Manager specialising in Diversity & Inclusion. Her main areas of responsibility are to develop football opportunities for females in under-represented communities. She is also a designated Expert in Women's Football Development at FIFA, and a Trustee at the Aston Villa FC Foundation. Rachel's been a key member in the implementation of the Barclays FA Women's Super League, and has managed participation and talent development programmes, along with heading up research into mixed football and initiating the Kick Off Your Career campaign. Rachel continues to be an integral part of The FA's work, through her experience working at both the domestic and international level of the women's game. It's no wonder that Rachel was the woman most suggested when we asked on social media for potential guest for The Game Changers. Her passion for the game and ability to drive change is extraordinary, but she does all this with huge humility. We explore the vast changes in women's football and attitudes to the women's game when she first joined the FA in the 90's. Rachel shares her own path in sports development and coaching, and we explore the development and future of the Women's Super League and the potential legacy of the Lionesses win in the Euros this summer.   Rachel is very open about the challenge the FA faces in making women's football truly ‘For All' and shares her learnings and work in the diversity and inclusion space. We also explore what other sports can learn from the experience of women's football in the past decade.Thank you to Sport England who support The Game Changers Podcast through the National LotteryFind out more about The Game Changers podcast here.Hosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production

Ep.K421: Women's soccer energizes England in a league of their own   England beat Germany 2-1 in the final of the European Championship after extra time on Sunday last week to win its first major women's soccer title. The final, which was played before a sellout crowd of more than 87,000 at historic Wembley Stadium, is seen as a watershed moment for women's sports in England. Although the game, known here as football, is a national passion, female players have often been scoffed at and were once banned from top-level facilities. Now the women's team did something the men haven't done since 1966: Win a major international tournament. Hope Powell played 66 times for England and coached the team from 1998 to 2013. “I think we have to give thanks to the people that worked really hard before us, that went through all of that, being banned, fighting for the right to play,” Powell told the BBC. “I think we have to remember what came before is what got us to the point we are today.” But it's not just the victories that are attracting fans. It is how the team is winning. With money from sponsorship deals and a new TV contract supporting full-time professional players, there is more flash and polish than many expected. While they don't play like the men's team, that's not a bad thing. There are fewer players flopping to the ground to draw fouls, less rolling around on the turf dramatically clutching purportedly injured knees or ankles and little shouting at the referees. Instead there is teamwork, artful passes and stunning goals like Stanway's 20m screamer in the quarterfinal victory over Spain and the backheel from Alessia Russo in England's 4-0 semifinal win against Sweden. And here's the thing: People like it. Coach Sarina Wiegman has made a point of noting that there's more at stake than victory alone. “We want to inspire the nation.” Women's football has a long and sometimes controversial history in England. The women's game flourished during and for a few years after World War I, when teams like Dick, Kerr Ladies Football Club filled the sporting gap created as top men's players went off to the trenches to fight. Women's teams, many organized at munitions plants, attracted large crowds and raised money for charity. One match in 1920 attracted 53,000 spectators. But that popularity triggered a backlash from the men who ran the Football Association, the sport's governing body in England. In 1921, the FA banned women's teams from using its facilities, saying “the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged.” The ban remained in place for the next 50 years. Women organized their own football association in 1969, and soon after the FA ended its ban on women. The FA took over responsibility for the women's game in 1993, beginning the slow process of improving funding and facilities. Things accelerated after the 2012 London Olympics, when authorities began to recognize there was a global audience for the women's game, said Gail Newsham, author of In a League of Their Own! that tells the story of Dick, Kerr Ladies. Last year, the FA signed a three-year deal for broadcast rights to the Women's Super League, increasing funding and exposure for the game. Sky Sports will broadcast a minimum of 35 games a year on its pay TV channels, and the BBC will carry another 22 on its free-to-view network. “It's not that long ago that girls, you know, top players, were paying for their own travel to get to matches and then having to get up to go to work the next day. So all of this is helping,” Newsham said of the funding. “You can see the difference now in the professionalism of the girls playing football.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2022/08/09/2003783186
