0:50 Insights into Japanese Football and Coaching JourneyHisashi reminisces about his early experiences with football in Japan, particularly enjoying lunchtime games with classmates. He cites Keisuke Honda as a childhood hero and recalls a significant match where Gamba Osaka faced Manchester United, which motivated him to become a football coach. Hisashi emphasizes the competitiveness of Japanese football and the excitement of watching teams like Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.10:21 -The State of Football Development in JapanHisashi explained that football has become increasingly popular in Japan, competing closely with baseball. He emphasized the importance of university football as a developmental stage for young players who may not transition directly to professional leagues, with many opting for education alongside their athletic pursuits.16:08 - University Pathways and Player Development in Japanese FootballHisashi discussed the relationship between Japanese universities and J-League clubs, noting that players often prioritize education over early professional contracts. While some players may sign with clubs during their third year, many choose to complete their degrees before becoming free agents, which allows them to negotiate with various clubs. This shift has attracted interest from international clubs, leading to changes in recruitment strategies.22:01 -Cultural Perspectives on Coaching in Japan and EnglandHisashi compares the coaching methods in Japan and England, noting that Japan has modeled its football academy system after European countries. He emphasizes the cultural differences, particularly in how players are treated, with Japanese coaches fostering independence and critical thinking from a young age, allowing players to take ownership of their development.32:04 -Discussion on Honda's Iconic Persona in FootballHisashi shares insights on Honda's distinctive style and personality, which set him apart from other players like Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa. He emphasizes Honda's boldness, including his fashion choices and outspoken nature, which resonated with fans and made him an icon. Michael Wright adds that Honda's nonconformity plays a significant role in his appeal.33:45- Cultural Perspectives on Coaching and Responsibility in SportsHisashi explains that Japanese coaches often allow players to think independently rather than providing direct answers, fostering a sense of personal responsibility. He highlights that this cultural approach encourages players to work hard and conform to group expectations, even when not directly supervised. Michael Wright expresses curiosity about how this contrasts with the behavior of young players in England, who might act out if left alone.39:59 -Discussion on Player Self-Regulation in CoachingMichael asked Hisashi about the potential for players in England to self-regulate and the time it might take for this to become effective. Hisashi responded that, in his experience, this model often does not work well due to the cultural context and the way players are taught. He noted that while players in Japan take ownership of their responsibilities regardless of supervision, this mindset may not be as prevalent in England.42:36- Exploring Coaching Approaches in Japanese FootballMichael and Hisashi explore the structured training methods prevalent in Japanese football, emphasizing the role of routine and repetition in skill development. Hisashi notes that while this approach fosters technical proficiency, it may limit players' creativity and adaptability in game situations. Michael adds that the challenge lies in translating training skills into live, pressurized moments on the pitch.. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Jason Webber joined the Football Association of Wales almost five years ago, to lead on EDI and Sustainability, a brand new role at the time. Prior to that, Jason worked in various Football Development roles, including coaching at the Cardiff City Academy. On leaving University, Jason worked for Show Racism the Red Card, which was his introduction to the Equality World. Jason on the emergence of EDI in football: “We've seen quite a shift in recent years and certainly since the murder of George Floyd. There has been quite a gulf of EDI related roles, particularly in football, but in sport more broadly. Sport is starting to be under the microscope a little bit more and being held accountable for progress, or lack of it, which maybe other industries have gone through. So there's certainly more focus in this area for Chief Executives, National Governing Bodies and in clubs across the game.” Jason on opportunity: “Through our BE: Football programme, we do a lot of work in schools, providing playing football opportunities. Unfortunately, there are still many schools that don't offer football for girls and it's very much an exclusive offer to boys. The Be: Football programme enables skills development and opportunities for girls to be mentors themselves in their own schools and be Ambassadors for younger girls.” Jason on Governance: “It is so important that EDI is an explicit and visible core element in any governance. Many National Associations are often a little bit archaic with how they are structured and set up and that's been the case for maybe a hundred years. WE have had a big change ourselves in terms of our own governance models and structures, but also ensuring that EDI is a core part and embedded within those changes and processes and likewise for clubs as well. We are currently working through to make sure that every club in Wales, from our professional clubs to grassroots, all have their own strategic plans, so that they are very clear on the direction they are going. The changes we have made ourselves, have brought about better representation and we have made huge changes to our recruitment process.”

With experience at Indiana University Football and DeFranco's Training Systems, Cameron has worked with athletes from various levels and sports like NFL, NHL, UFC, and WWE. A former football player at the University of Rhode Island and current PhD candidate at Jean Monnet University, Cameron's approach to performance training is both practical and comprehensive. As we move forward in sports performance training, there is more data around speed training for athletes than ever, as well as corresponding logistics and systems. We are understanding that physical preparation is not a one-sized fits all approach, not only between sports, as well as within positions in a single sport. By better understanding key aspects of speed development on an individual level, as well as in knowing the evolving role of strength training over time, we can better serve the needs of the individual athlete. On today's episode, Cameron will cover the process of optimizing resisted sprint protocols in college football athletes, as well as important individual differences he sees between positions and maximal speed ability. We will cover strength training in light of long term athlete speed and power development, sprint biomechanics and injury prevention, as well as concepts of integration between strength and sport skill staffs. Cameron is a brilliant coach with an expansive view of the training process. This conversation is a valuable addition for anyone interested in long term development of speed and athleticism. It seems like there's a certain point where enough is enough, right?" - Cameron Josse" What we're finding is that the, like, the step velocity itself, like how fast the leg moves through the push phase, is really, really important for the bigs. It seems like it. There's a big correlation to performance for those guys, but it's not really. It doesn't seem to be as big of an important factor for the skill guys. Cameron Josse The bigs are so big, they have less opportunity to compensate to a certain degree. Yeah, like, they. It's like, I got to get this big body moving, and, like, we all kind of need to self organize to do this better or else we're not going to move, you know.

Today on the podcast I am joined by Craig Brown CBE, former Director and now ambassador at the Aberdeen Football Club, as well as the former Director of Football Development and International Team Manager at the Scottish Football Association. In the second part of our interview with Craig, we continue our conversation on lessons he has learnt from other coaches throughout his career. We also have an interesting discussion on substitutions. “I'm unashamedly prepared to steal ideas and to ask for ideas,” says Craig, proceeding to talk of what he was able to glean from coaches, managers, and even players alike in his time. He speaks in particular of Brian Clough, whose rather unorthodox approach to coaching once saw him taking his players to a pub and buying them whisky in place of practicing. Speaking on substitutions, Craig says that there are reasons to substitute beyond preventing poor performance and injury. For instance, it's a form of acknowledgement when the player has scored a few goals themselves. Substitutions also reveal a lot about the player's attitude. Craig contends: “If you're on that bench,” he says, “you've got to be a supporter as well as a substitute.” TIMESTAMP: [00:52] Lessons learned from other coaches and managers [04:20] Why Brian Clough stands out [08:04] Why bigger stars are easier to handle [11:42] Is there a right time to tell a player when they're dropped? The network consists of professional football clubs, leagues across Europe that have now committed themselves to social responsibility. Nevertheless, he persevered. Their goal is to create a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing in order to develop a diversity of training methods that will directly benefit communities throughout Europe.
