In the history of the Rainbow Laces campaign, LGBTQ supporters groups have been pivotal - think of Proud Hornets' huge rainbow mosaic at Watford, fans getting to chat with first-team players, and clubs and community trusts sharing the stories of members. However, in the 2024 activation, three groups in the Premier League - Crystal Palace's Proud and Palace, Manchester United's Rainbow Devils and Ipswich's Rainbow Tractors - found themselves pitched into controversies due to decisions made by players that blew up into big stories. Be it an armband or an anthem jacket, whether abstaining or altering, the impact of these situations are felt deeply by LGBTQ fans who suddenly find themselves having to handle media enquiries and negotiate with club officials under similar scrutiny. On a special Podcast episode, Proud and Palace co-chair Emma Franklin-Wright and group member Randy Boose share their reflections from a turbulent week and a half; Emma's equivalent at Rainbow Devils, Eric Najib - who's also first-team manager at Stonewall FC - talks us through what happened at Manchester United; and we're also joined by Rishi Madlani, the co-chair of Pride in Football and a committee member of Leicester City's Foxes Pride. As well as looking back, the panel also looks ahead to what a future Rainbow Laces activation might look like in light of this year's challenges, and how the annual FvH Month of Action in February 2025 can help shift the focus onto where it needs to be. We start with some good news. As reported in The Telegraph, Cambridge Constabulary have announced that they will be taking no further action against the FSU member who used the word “pikey” on the phone to the police while reporting two men who were threatening her and her family. Meanwhile, “Rainbow Refuseniks” is the name given to a growing group of footballers who have either refused to wear rainbow-coloured jerseys and armbands to signify their support for the Football Association's Rainbow Laces campaign or have written religious messages on them. To date, they include Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi and Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui. Our Executive Communications Officer, Freddie Attenborough, has written more broadly about the football world's war on free speech in The Critic. We move on to discuss the state of debate in the UK, following a debate at the Oxford Union, which is now being investigated by counter-terror police. The motion was: “This house believes Israel is an apartheid state responsible for genocide”. As Jan explains, the video of the debate is an unedifying spectacle but it is also revealing, especially in a context where certain speakers were claiming they ought not even be there to debate the issue. By contrast, FSU member Connie Shaw is heroically standing up for free speech, having been suspended from hosting a student radio show on Leeds Student Radio after she was accused of breaching her student union's code of conduct. This followed her expressing gender critical views and interviewing controversial figures for her podcast. The Telegraph reports how the FSU is helping Connie to appeal the student union's decision and has called for the investigation findings to be quashed. We stay within the FSU family to discuss the research of Ben Jones, our Director of Case Management. Ben spoke at the National Secular Society's members' day about the experiences of ex-muslims in the UK. As he said in his talk, his findings were shocking and “shouldn't happen in any country, let alone the UK”. Finally, FSU members have just a few hours left to sign-up for our Online Christmas Review on Tuesday 10th December (register using the link in the weekly newsletter). ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.
On this week's show, Gavin and Sinéad explore the controversy around the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign, a long-running visibility and inclusivity campaign in support of the LGBTQ+ community which two Premier League captains and the Manchester United team chose not to support fully last week.Is the campaign doing more harm than good? Why is the men's football so hostile to the LGBTQ+ community, where the women's game is much more inclusive? Is it unfair to focus on individual footballers, when the sport as a whole does not stand up for the values it claims to hold? Is this story indicative of a wider retreat and regression on LGTBQ+ issues? And, ultimately, can sport really be the inclusive force for progressive values we sometimes like to think it can be?Get in touch - sinead@thejournal.ie and gavincooney@the42.ie Hosted on Acast. #774 We saw it coming. Arsenal have been exceptional at capitalising on set pieces this season, consistently creating chances to win free kicks and corners. United ultimately conceded 13 corners, with two leading to goals for Mikel 'Pulis' Arteta's side. While United's structure largely held firm, limiting Arsenal's threat from open play, their own attack lacked any real menace. Ed and Wayne break down a frustrating result and examine yet another reminder of the daunting task ahead for new Head Coach Ruben Amorim. There's a discussion about the Rainbow Laces campaign and a tribute to Kath Phipps who has passed away.If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing exclusive bonus episodes, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. In terms of sporting triumphs, it doesn't get much better than becoming world champions – and that's exactly what Stonewall FC did in Argentina last month as they became the ten-time IGLFA World Champions with a victory over West Hollywood. They didn't do it the easy way either, losing two centre-backs to injury and coming from behind to secure El Decimo – but champions find a way to win, and that's exactly what Stonewall FC managed to do. Manager Eric Najib, and players Fernando Martins and Shane McCullough, played a key role in Stonewall's triumph - and they're all with us on the podcast today to talk about how it happened. We talk about that glorious campaign in Argentina; what it means to pick up victory after victory on the global stage; being part of such a prestigious tournament,; making it into double digits when it comes to World Cup wins and so much more. Plus, in the midst of Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign in the UK, we talk about the importance of inclusivity in the beautiful game; what draws straight allies to a club like Stonewall; making football a place where everyone can feel welcome and loads, loads more. Today is a special episode that is really special to me, as we're talking about grassroots football at the time that Stonewall is running its Rainbow Laces campaign – and doing so with the help of my club Stargazy FC. Yes, today, we're spotlighting some of the characters and people who are not only making grassroots football inclusive and accessible in one of the most rural parts of the UK – but they also happen to be my team-mates as well. These are the folks who I train with, step out onto the pitch with, share changing rooms with – and who have, each in their own way, reinforced my love of the beautiful game, and chat a bit about Rainbow Laces as well. I love these folks who you're going to hear from today – so we really hope you love this episode as well! It's a huge weekend in the Women's Super League and Championship, with bumper crowds expected on a round of fixtures all being played at the clubs' main stadiums - from Goodison Park to the Amex, from St James' Park to The Valley, a lot of eyes will be on women's football. And they'll be seeing a lot of rainbows, as it's a Rainbow Laces activation too. So how important is the LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports campaign in the women's game? Joining us to explore this is Billericay Town forward Valentine Pursey, who recently went public about a report she made regarding homophobic abuse on the pitch; and Huddersfield Town midfielder and TikToker Caz Simone, who won the LGBTQ Award at the Football Black List earlier this year. They chat with host Jon Holmes of FvH and Sports Media LGBT+ about their experiences within football and on social media; what it's like to be a player with short hair, which is somewhat rare in the women's game and also the subject of an awareness campaign created by an Under-12 girls team; and what they believe the underlying message should be for Rainbow Laces 2024. On this week's feature length episode of the official EFL podcast, Mark Clemmit is having a week off to celebrate his significant birthday, and off the bench is supersub David Prutton. Joining Prutts this week is Swansea City boss Russell Martin to discuss his side's superb form of late, and while that hasn't gone unnoticed by the rest of the league, Russell is keen to keep his men slightly under the radar and isn't getting carried away. It's all about ‘Rainbow Laces' at this time of year, and Prutts is joined by the EFL's brilliant head of EDI David McArdle, to talk about the activity that's happening at clubs up and down the country, and after more than a decade in Australia, the former Sunderland and Leeds United legend Michael Bridges is back and making his punditry debut on the official EFL podcast. He was pretty special as a player, and as a pundit he's equally top class!

Paddy Power is a veteran of the gaming industry. As a fourth generation ‘bookie' he has helped create, develop and ultimately personify one of the wagering world's most famous brands, ‘Paddy Power'.Paddy Power (the brand!) is a cornerstone of the Flutter Group, which has grown to become the world's leading gaming and wagering company, with brands including Fanduel under its umbrella.Paddy's expertise throughout his career has been mainly focussed on the fearless pursuit of creating an iconic, relevant and relatable brand. Paddy Power has consistently been the most famous betting brand in the UK & Ireland and has won countless awards for various campaigns over the past two decades, both within and outside it's sector.Paddy's successful campaigns are as varied as setting up a ‘bookie stall' in St. Peter's Square to shout odds on the next Pope during the 2005 Papal Election (the Vatican Guard were none too pleased!), to launching a ‘Rainbow Laces' campaign, persuading Premier League footballers to wear Rainbow Laces to raise awareness of homophobia in Football.‘What would nobody else dare do?' Is a question Paddy and his team often asked, and the answer invariably led to an unexpected and successful campaign. Like persuading Prof. Stephen Hawking to become a Paddy Power brand Ambassador for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014 - his job was to mathematically calculate how to take the perfect penalty to help England get over their awful record in penalty shootouts….as it turned out England were so bad they didn't make it far enough in the tournament to even have a penalty shoot out! In more recent times Paddy has hosted a 26 show series of The Green Room, a weekly sports & entertainment show on Irish national TV, and has made various sports and culture documentaries on behalf of Paddy Power (the brand) as they spread their reach away from the traditional core territories. This type of uninhibited, creative thinking and action (along with a vastly superior social following to its peers) has consistently been the difference which has created an unrivalled brand affinity among Paddy Power advocates. As a founder and President of ASX, Paddy's ambition is to facilitate a new era of engagement among sports fans where they can be entertained on their own terms rather than the more traditional terms of those gone before. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crypto-hipster-podcast/support
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this episode Christian and Brett have a conversation with journalist Jon Holmes. Jon is the founder of Sports Media LGBT+, an organization that advocates for inclusion in media and journalism specifically, and sports in general.Jon is an experienced journalist and writer, and for many years led Sky Sports' support for Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign. He launched Sports Media LGBT+ in August 2017 with the idea to harness the power of media and journalism in order to advocate for and amplify the voices of athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and all others involved in sport who are LGBT+.In our conversation with Jon, we discussed the origins of Sports Media LGBT+, inclusion in sports media, supporters groups, and football clubs in general, as well as the recent coverage of 17-year-old Jake Daniels, the Blackpool FC midfielder who became the UK's first active male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay in May 2022.Of course, Jon is also a fan of Ted Lasso, so we took some time to chat with him about his love for the show, its lack of representation when it comes to gay and queer characters, and the ways in which Ted Lasso (the show and the character) helps to address and dismantle toxic masculinity in sport.Full show notes can be found on our website: https://www.tedlassopod.com/jon-holmes-sports-media-lgbt-ted-lassoRichmond Til We Die is an episode-by-episode conversation about the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso, where we explore the characters, their relationships to each other, and how they're able to make us laugh until we can hardly breathe one moment and then feel with the deepest parts of our hearts the next. When you're here, you're a Greyhound!
This is the second of our breakout episodes dealing with an issue rather than one guest and their football journey. This episode is on LGBT people and how football, particularly men's football, deals with those people. We hear from sports lawyer, and talented amateur footballer, Jamie Feldman who talks about his experiences as a young man, his time playing for Stonewall FC and his work with Rainbow Laces. We also speak to Dr Sophie Cook, a trans woman and former club photographer at AFC Bournemouth who transitioned in 2015 with huge support from the club. Sophie was born Steve and, coincidentally, was at the club at the same time as player Steve Cook, who provides his recollections of the time and his support for Sophie. Finally, we speak to Crystal Palace women's goalkeeper, solicitor and Football Ramble presenter, Chloe Morgan about the lessons learned from the women's game. Please do support us on Patreon - patreon.com/footballjourneys. 20% of sports fans believe that anti-LGBTQ+ language is harmless if it's just meant as "banter". That is the mentality that Stonewall seeks to challenge every year with their Rainbow Laces campaign - their annual day of messaging that sport is everyone's game! Ahead of the 2021 campaign Alex Manby spoke to Erin Williams, Sport Engagement Manager for Stonewall, about this years 'Lace Up and Speak Up' campaign, the impact that Rainbow laces are having on the acceptance of LGBTQ+ communities in sport and how Premier League stars like Jordan Henderson and Conor Coady has helped grow awareness around the globe. In the past three decades, English men's football has undergone considerable structural and social change. Ongoing commitment by the footballing authorities to tackle discrimination has led to the diversification of fandom inside English stadia, including the emergence of LGBT Fan Groups throughout the country. Dr Rory Magrath interviewed 35 gay male fans of various professional clubs for a study looking into their experiences and their sense of place in football. The study found that English football is now an overwhelmingly inclusive environment, evidenced by the growing number of LGBT fans attending matches and the decline of discriminatory chanting. This is partly attributed to the increase in LGBT fan groups, of which there are over 40 across English professional football; among the participants were seven founders or co-founders of such groups. Most of the supporters interviewed for the study said that Fan Groups provided the chance to establish a safe community and a sense of belonging, with the potential to affect social change on English football. While it was clear that these groups had encouraged greater involvement among LGBT fans, some argued that fan groups were now redundant given the increasingly inclusive environment at stadia, and even went so far as to state that Fan Groups nowadays are actually ‘othering' gay fans unnecessarily. Are there particular clubs who deserve particular praise for their support of LGBT fan groups? To what extent do gay male fans engage in hyper-masculine behaviours associated with football fandom in order to ‘gain acceptance' or ‘fit-in' to an arena where they have been historically excluded? What is the perception of initiatives such as the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign? ...all this and more in the 25th episode of the Football and Society podcast. *** If you like the podcast, please subscribe and give us a review via your platform of choice.
