Dr Gladys McGarey died, aged 103, in September of this year, so I wanted to honour her by making her episode the last to go out on the last day of the year. Rest In Power Gladys. ---- A few months ago I read an article that took my breath away. The author was 102 years old and in it she wrote candidly about losing her partner in life and work after 46 years. Not because he passed away, but because he handed her divorce papers! That would have floored most of us, but despite being sideswiped, Dr Gladys McGarey, picked herself up, started a new medical practice with her daughter before becoming a speaker, author and all-round inspiration. All this at the age of 70. Since then Dr Gladys, who is known as the mother of holistic medicine, has received countless awards including the Humanities Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind. At 85 she travelled to Afghanistan to teach rural women safer birthing practices. At her 90th birthday party she jumped out of her birthday cake. At 102 she became the proud owner of an adult tricycle. Who is this woman? And how does she do it? I HAD to know. Now on the cusp of 103, Dr Gladys joined me from her home in Arizona to tell me her secrets to health and happiness. We discussed ageing into health, femifesting (as opposed to manifesting), how divorce was the remaking of her, finding her voice at 93 and why we should all spend our energy wildly! I know this isn't the first time I've said I found my old bird role model, but seriously. Dr Gladys is IT. Dr. Gladys McGarey, lovingly hailed as the "Mother of Holistic Medicine," devoted over six transformative decades to reshaping our understanding of health and healing. Born on November 30, 1920, in India, Dr. McGarey grew up steeped in the traditions of care and compassion, inspired by her medical missionary parents. At just 16, she boldly moved to the United States to pursue her dream of medicine, overcoming formidable barriers as a pioneering female medical resident in the 1940s. In 1964, Dr. McGarey co-founded the Olive Tree Medical Group, later known as the ARE Clinic, the first of its kind to integrate the teachings of Edgar Cayce into holistic healthcare. Her groundbreaking vision culminated in the founding of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978, forever changing the landscape of integrative medicine in the United States. Through her powerful works, including Born to Live and The Well-Lived Life, Dr. McGarey distilled her philosophy into her "Five Ls": Life, Love, Laughter, Labor, and Listening. She believed deeply that "all healing comes from inside ourselves" and that "love is the essence of healing," a testament to her profound understanding of the human spirit. Her remarkable life included meeting Gandhi as a child, pioneering safer birthing practices in Afghanistan, and, even at 103, continuing to inspire through her writing and speaking. Sadly, just weeks after recording a podcast conversation together, this extraordinary light transitioned from our world. Today, I share that recording—a rare and poignant glimpse into her wisdom and boundless spirit. Dr. McGarey's legacy of love and healing will continue to illuminate hearts and minds for generations to come. Rest in peace, Dr. Gladys. ✨
In honor of Dr. Gladys McGarey and the joy she embodied, this new episode illuminates the transformative power of laughter in our lives. Drawing on material in the Edgar Cayce readings that explains what happens physically, emotionally, and spiritually when we laugh, Corinne Cayce and Dr. Arlene Dijamco weave together life lessons passed on from Dr. McGarey and insights in the readings to offer highly-applicable practices to bring a little more laughter into our lives—and an in-depth look, as only the Cayce readings can give–into laughter as an attunement pathway to our whole selves.
Hi loves, welcome back to our Monday interview show. For this week, I wanted to replay our very special interview with Dr. Gladys McGarry, who just passed away at the age of 103. So our interview was one of her last interviews of her life. She had such a profound impact on me in this interview. She moved me to tears. She was amazing. Those of you that aren't familiar with Dr. McGarry, she wrote several books one of them being the well-lived life. She started her medical practice when most women were not able to even open bank accounts. She was a trailblazer. She is known as the mother of holistic medicine. She was incredible. And in this last book of her life, she talks so much about moving through pain, opening up to love, letting love heal fear. And she shared some really personal stories of incredible pain in her own life and how she overcame. She was a mother of six. She was an incredible trailblazer. And it is my intention with today's show to honor her work and her life. So please watch or listen to this episode today or rewatch or re-listen to it if you did already, but with an open heart as we honor Dr. McGarry's life and her work.

A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback. And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. Dr Gladys shared her wise words about acceptance to alleviate pain and enhance well-being, her concept of ageing into health, and the importance of finding purpose. Sharing lots of her personal experiences, she emphasised that there is a choice to ‘be glad' and the importance of spreading joy. It's not often you get to seek the wisdom of a 102-year-old, but when it's a neurodivergent doctor and life coach, you know you're in for a profound conversation. She tells me her secrets to a fulfilled life of gratitude, acceptance and authenticity.I was absolutely honoured to speak with the inspiring and fascinating Dr Gladys McGarey, who was 102 years old at the time of her new book's publication. I read her wonderful book, A Well-Lived Life, and loved every page and the spiritual wisdom she shared—I had many epiphanies after each chapter. After spotting the signs of a neurodivergent brain—she shares her dyslexia, learning, and education journey—I knew I had to reach out to her team and ask her to join the podcast! During our conversation, Dr Gladys shared her story of being held back in her early years of education due to undiagnosed dyslexia and how, through her different learning styles and curiosity, she is now recognised as a pioneer of the allopathic and holistic medical movements and a founding diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. At the age of 103, not only is today's guest the oldest I've ever welcomed onto my podcast, but she's also the oldest returning guest, too! Dr Gladys McGarey is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and the author of the fantastic book The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age. She began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts, and over the past sixty years, she's pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that's transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world. In this wonderful and uplifting conversation, and with her trademark humour and compassion, Gladys offers profound insights on living with purpose, navigating adversity and finding healing within ourselves. We explore how to avoid living with regrets, the importance of parents truly listening to and supporting their children and finding your unique purpose that ‘feeds your soul'. We also look at how we can bring a more positive attitude to negative experiences and how Gladys lives by what she calls her "5 Ls" - life, love, laughter, labour and listening. Still thriving at 103, she embodies staying curious, adaptable and active. During our conversation, she shares her views on ageing, believing in ‘ageing into health' rather than ‘anti-ageing.' She also stresses the importance of doctors listening to - and loving - their patients but that it's ultimately us who are responsible for our own healing. Gladys's century of life experiences has something to offer everyone. Her wisdom will inspire you to reflect on your own purpose, face life's challenges with resilience and make the most of the years ahead. It was an honour to speak to Gladys again and have such a deep and honest conversation with her. I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did. Her playfulness, humour, and can-do attitude remind us that it's never too late to learn, grow and make a positive impact on the world around us. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes.
