Talk Art returns for Season 23! We meet Culture-loving Rob Rinder MBE and Architecture-fan Rylan Clark as they follow in the footsteps of 19th century romantic poet Lord Byron, and other Grand Tourists, on the 200th anniversary of his death. We discuss Caravaggio, Murano glass blowing, Artemisia Gentileschi & her censored ‘Allegory of Inclination' (1816) and what it was like to become nude life models themselves. We explore how they met the Venice-based drag/art collective House of Serenissima, and hear all the gossip from the historic era of the Grand Tour.Rob and Rylan's Grand Tour follows Rob Rinder and Rylan Clark – presenters, friends, and men who love the finer things in life – as they discover the greatest art treasures in Italy, finding out more about themselves along the way. Together, they retrace the steps of countless English aristocrats who took the Grand Tour – the original gap year – leaving behind the confines of British society for freedom and discovery abroad. But can the Grand Tour still work its magic today?Starting their journey in the winding canals of Venice, Rylan and Rob are ready to embark on the Grand Tour, once a cultural rite of passage designed to turn young men into distinguished gentlemen. In the city, they unveil one of the largest canvas paintings in the world, Tintoretto's Il Paradiso, leaving them in awe. They also learn about the legacy of Italian painter Canaletto before heading off to the quaint island of Murano, famous for its glass blowing art. Rob, a lover of opera and poetry, attempts to realise a lifelong dream by conducting Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the same church it was first performed in. Meanwhile, Rylan learns all about the lesser known side of the famous Venice Carnival. In episode two, Rob and Rylan head to the Renaissance city of Florence, the “Beating Heart of Tuscany”. Famous for its many museums and art galleries, this charming city is oozing with history around every corner. Set out to uncover the secrets of the Renaissance period, the pair soak up the sights, including the well known Uffizi Gallery in the historic centre, home to pieces by legendary artists Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raffaello. They go on to visit more iconic locations: the Stibbert Museum, the Bargello Museum, Piazzale Michelangelo, Piazza Santa Croce during the final of the Calcio Storico, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Maria Novella, and Ponte alle Grazie. Along the trip, the duo learnt what it meant to be a Grand Tourist, trying on flamboyant Italian looks, fencing, dancing. On their final stop, the dynamic duo head to Italy's capital city, Rome. Here they enjoy exploring the classical ruins of the famous Colosseum and the Roman Forum as well as the Pantheon. Channelling their love of opera, Rylan and Rob enjoy a rooftop performance with sensational views of the city in the background.Rob and Rylan's Grand Tour is available now to stream on BBC iPlayer.Follow @RobRinder and @Rylan Hosted on Acast. This is our third and final podcast about the beautiful city of Florence and we might have just saved the best til last. But first, Just to answer a question I have received many times about our arrival in Florence in episode 62 – no I still don't know why the guy said he was a sniper and what he was actually trying to say – if you don't know what I'm talking about – then go back and listen to the beginning of Episode 62 and you will understand – still one of the funniest things that happened to us in Florence. Ok, back to episode 64 where we are taking you to my favourite palace in Florence – the Pitti Place (I know, the name doesn't do it justice) as well as the beautiful Boboli Gardens which are a green oasis in the middle of the city.  Our guide Carmella showed us the most amazing galleries and living quarters of the palace. There was a quirky artwork including butterflies and dwarfs plus the most paintings by Raphael any where in the world.  In fact all the Ninja turtles are represented at the Palace. We learnt so much about the art and artists (obviously as I am still calling them ninja turtles) and the beauty in this palace was stunning. Come with us as we walk around the 11 acres of the Boboli gardens.  Some of the best views of the city are from the top of the gardens. We are quite intrigued by some of the grottos which look like lumps of plaster thrown against cave walls, but then you realise they are actually animals. Weird but fascinating. Next we go to a museum and unusual type of art gallery that only the locals seem to know about.  and it was incredible.  It involves rare semi precious stones and it is a technique that is only practiced in Florence.  Stay listening to the end to hear about the sport – if you can call it that – called Calcio Storico.  We tell you about this game which is a combination of rugby, martial arts, boxing, wrestling, and American football, just to name a few. It basically seems like a big brawl on the sand field involving 27 players on each side trying to score the most points. It actually dates back centuries and even some Popes played it in the Vatican city.  It's a game unique to Florence and it's only played once a year in the annual tournament in June and involves 4 teams from the four classic neighbourhoods and the locals love it. What's Up Tuscany English
Why Florence's calcio storico is bonkers but great - Ep. 138

What's Up Tuscany English

Summer in Tuscany is a truly glorious season, even if sometimes it gets really hot and muggy. If you're lucky enough to be in this neck of the woods, you'll be spoilt for choice between many fairs, events that are sometimes quite quirky. Last year we talked to you about the Gioco del Ponte, the reverse tug of war on one of Pisa's most famous bridges, an event so unusual that baffles foreigners since the Middle Ages. Up the Arno, the main rival of the city of the Leaning Tower had plenty of particular events, but no one is as crazy as the tournament that dominates one of its most beautiful squares at the end of June. This very ancient version of football is, frankly, an acquired taste. What makes it weird? Well, let's start by saying that literal fighting on the pitch is pretty much ignored by the referees. Despite being so brutal, Florentines adore it, so much that it's almost integral to the city identity. That is why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you back to Florence to tell you everything there is to know about the wonderfully bonkers "calcio storico".If you listen to the full episode, you will learn how the origins of this game are quite unclear, possibly dating back to the Roman Empire and how, especially in the Renaissance, Fiorentini loved it so much that it was played in almost every street. It wasn't just regular people: heirs of the most powerful families, like the Medici, played in Piazza Santa Croce. It took a long siege and a crazy act of defiance to consolidate its place in the heart of every Florentine. After being banned for a couple centuries, since 1930 the tournament is held every year following the rules written back in 1580 by a famous scholar. In the final parts I will explain to you the not so crazy rules of this game and try to convey what makes it so close to the hearts of many Tuscans. It is not to everyone's taste, many people find it abhorrent, brutal, unnecessarily violent but by looking at how the players and fans get so crazy that you can have a look into the real soul of this land. It may be bonkers, but it's much more genuine than many others events that seem catered only to tourists.Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyLINKS TO SOURCES (ITALIAN ONLY)https://sportgang.it/calcio-storico-fiorentino/https://www.vanityfair.it/sport/altri-sport/2017/07/09/calcio-storico-fiorentino-rispetto-polizia-campo-zenahttps://www.intersport.it/get-inspired/calcio-storico-fiorentino-storia-regoleBACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Everous & Canonblade - GleamCatmosphere - Candy-Coloured SkyRender - PrismPipe Choir - Gemini (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/catmosphere-candy-coloured-skyhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/render-prismhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Pipe_Choir/SGONS_Instrumentals/Pipe_Gemini_Instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

What's Up Tuscany
Perché il calcio storico è meravigliosamente pazzesco - Ep. 156

What's Up Tuscany

Come mai? Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyI LINK ALLE FONTIhttps://sportgang.it/calcio-storico-fiorentino/https://www.vanityfair.it/sport/altri-sport/2017/07/09/calcio-storico-fiorentino-rispetto-polizia-campo-zenahttps://www.intersport.it/get-inspired/calcio-storico-fiorentino-storia-regoleBACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Everous & Canonblade - GleamCatmosphere - Candy-Coloured SkyRender - PrismPipe Choir - Gemini (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/catmosphere-candy-coloured-skyhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/render-prismhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Pipe_Choir/SGONS_Instrumentals/Pipe_Gemini_Instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

How much should we let our kids struggle?    My guest today grew up with altruistic visionary hippy vegetarian parents in a logging community.  Yep, you heart that right.      Dr. Skylar Pond and I had a killer chat about combat sports, comfort zones and what it takes to be the toughest SOB in america.    Other rabbit holes we travel down…  The story of Calcio Storico in Florence, Italy  How to view kids sports  When parents overprotection hurts  How hard should dads push their kids?  What is tempo failure and why does this prevent injury?  QUOTE “They see me fail and I see them fail and we grow together. We have that relationship with the challenges that we take.” - Dr. Skylar Pond   “I think it’s cool when our kids can learn about those experiences from their parents and they can say ‘my dad really stepped up, he really did adventurous things.’” - Jon Vroman   PEOPLE MENTIONED Steve Austin Dean Karnazes Malcom Gladwell    EPISODE RESOURCES SportsMedNW.com Follow on Twitter, Insta, Facebook Outliers by Malcom Gladwell  Home Game Calcio Storico The Broken Skull Challenge     ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Pond’s life took a turn toward sports medicine when he suffered a tear in his right shoulder while pursuing a passion in competitive rugby.  The options posed to him were a) get the shoulder surgically repaired or b) stop tackling people and having fun-- so he chose c) develop a demanding and experimental shoulder stabilization routine and continue to play pain-free.  After his successful experiment, he was inspired to pursue a degree that would give him the opportunity to share that same level of success with others. Now as a sports chiropractor, Dr. Pond is a resource to coaches and athletes who seek an alternative to injury care beyond rest, ibuprofen or surgery.   As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician,  he serves as the team physician of Seattle's Pro Rugby Club, the Seattle Seawolves and The Ivan Salaverry MMA Team.     Dr. Pond does his best to practice what he preaches, he's currently a blue belt competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he has competed for ten years in Kettlebell Sport, CrossFit and The Broken Skull Challenge.   Want to learn more about Front Row Dads? We are in the business of building better families. While most dads would say that family matters most, the challenge is they feel guilty knowing their careers get the best of them, and their family seems to get the rest of them.

Hey hey hey everyone! We are back with another episode of The Just Talk Podcast! Episode 61 is in the books and here's what we have for you. Apparently, there are Mystery Boxes on eBay that people will absolutely buy for a ridiculous amount of money without knowing what you're getting hence, Mystery Boxes. Pretty sketchy if y'all asked us. Mike's question for this week is for the guys. As a guy, can you just "whip it out" and pee on someone who just got stung by a jellyfish? Golden showers on OKCupid are an option! Hahahaha. You know those Big Balls.....you know the ones on Summer Camp hahaha. Some reminisce going to camps and running in the mud and all the good memories and fun that camp brings. Calcio Storico and M1 Medieval were some of the topics that came up. As well Deadliest Warriors and Sports Science. Awesome stuff! Also Mike doesn't think there's "Men" in the world anymore. Do you all agree? What is your definition of a "Man"? We of course talk about the weekly trailers that came out and this week, those trailers are the BIG GUNS. Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 were definitely talked about as well as Cloak and Dagger and Tag. MeUndies were mentioned as Tommy and Mike is a subscriber and endorses MeUndies wholeheartedly. If you're a guy, does your penis have a name? Yes that was asked hahaha. We reveal our names for out penises and we also talk about the Fantastic Beast: Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer haha. Another question asked is what is your Favorite Cameo? Another one is what is flirting, what do you consider flirting is, and would you flirt back if you have a significant other? And finally, Cheri asked the guys if we could suck ourselves off, would we?..... ALL of these questions are asked in this jam-packed episode and once again, we thank ALL OF YOU who supports us and listens to us. Thank you all!
