Dr. Gladys McGarey, lovingly hailed as the "Mother of Holistic Medicine," devoted over six transformative decades to reshaping our understanding of health and healing. Born on November 30, 1920, in India, Dr. McGarey grew up steeped in the traditions of care and compassion, inspired by her medical missionary parents. At just 16, she boldly moved to the United States to pursue her dream of medicine, overcoming formidable barriers as a pioneering female medical resident in the 1940s. In 1964, Dr. McGarey co-founded the Olive Tree Medical Group, later known as the ARE Clinic, the first of its kind to integrate the teachings of Edgar Cayce into holistic healthcare. Her groundbreaking vision culminated in the founding of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978, forever changing the landscape of integrative medicine in the United States. Through her powerful works, including Born to Live and The Well-Lived Life, Dr. McGarey distilled her philosophy into her "Five Ls": Life, Love, Laughter, Labor, and Listening. She believed deeply that "all healing comes from inside ourselves" and that "love is the essence of healing," a testament to her profound understanding of the human spirit. Her remarkable life included meeting Gandhi as a child, pioneering safer birthing practices in Afghanistan, and, even at 103, continuing to inspire through her writing and speaking. Sadly, just weeks after recording a podcast conversation together, this extraordinary light transitioned from our world. Today, I share that recording—a rare and poignant glimpse into her wisdom and boundless spirit. Dr. McGarey's legacy of love and healing will continue to illuminate hearts and minds for generations to come. Rest in peace, Dr. Gladys. ✨

At the age of 103, not only is today's guest the oldest I've ever welcomed onto my podcast, but she's also the oldest returning guest, too! Dr Gladys McGarey is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and the author of the fantastic book The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age. She began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts, and over the past sixty years, she's pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that's transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world. In this wonderful and uplifting conversation, and with her trademark humour and compassion, Gladys offers profound insights on living with purpose, navigating adversity and finding healing within ourselves. We explore how to avoid living with regrets, the importance of parents truly listening to and supporting their children and finding your unique purpose that ‘feeds your soul'. We also look at how we can bring a more positive attitude to negative experiences and how Gladys lives by what she calls her "5 Ls" - life, love, laughter, labour and listening. Still thriving at 103, she embodies staying curious, adaptable and active. During our conversation, she shares her views on ageing, believing in ‘ageing into health' rather than ‘anti-ageing.' She also stresses the importance of doctors listening to - and loving - their patients but that it's ultimately us who are responsible for our own healing. Gladys's century of life experiences has something to offer everyone. Her wisdom will inspire you to reflect on your own purpose, face life's challenges with resilience and make the most of the years ahead. It was an honour to speak to Gladys again and have such a deep and honest conversation with her. I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did. Her playfulness, humour, and can-do attitude remind us that it's never too late to learn, grow and make a positive impact on the world around us. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Hi and welcome to How Humans Heal. I'm Dr. Doni Wilson, and today I'm excited to introduce you to my friend and colleague, Dr. Elisa Song. She is an integrative pediatrician who specializes in helping children and families. She trained as a medical doctor at Stanford and UCSF and then became an integrative practitioner. She has helped so many people with her website and her book, both called Healthy Kids, Happy Kids. From an early age Dr. Elisa knew she wanted to work with kids. She was planning to be a public policy children's rights advocate and went along the whole path until somewhere in her junior year, she saw a flyer for the American Holistic Medical Association conference. This is before it was really called Holistic Medicine; it was called Alternative Medicine. She drove down to the Santa Clara Convention Center, and her mind was blown. She realized she wanted to help people using natural approaches. She chose to become an MD, and then integrate preventive care into her practice. He tells his patients that he is not so much focused on treating their disease but rather trying to find ways of helping them become healthy. We talked about:In this episode, Dr. Millstine and her guests discuss:The limits of conventional medicine. Conventional medicine can be passive, Dr. Bergstrom says: You go to the doctor and get a prescription. Dr. Bergstrom and Dr. Gladys believe in empowering their patients, engaging with them and giving them tools to improve their wellness. A personal approach. Stress has important negative effects on health, but you can't simply direct someone to “Be less stressed.” In fact, Dr. Bergstrom says you can't address stress until you fully understand someone's story: Who they are, how they got there, what's happened to them, and how that's affected their ability to live.Finding your “juice.” Dr. Gladys wants everyone to recognize their “juice” — her term for your reason for living, your source of joy and purpose, and what gets you out of bed in the morning. Physicians often shy away from addressing this aspect of spiritual wellness, Dr. Bergstrom says, because it's messy. But it's essential to understand for whole-person wellness. Aged 102 (and a half!) years, today's guest is the oldest person I've welcomed onto the show. Dr Gladys McGarey is co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and author of the fantastic new book, The Well-Lived Life: A 102-year-old Doctor's Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age. Many people consider Gladys to be the ‘mother of holistic medicine'. For years now, she has been trying to spread the message that health is not just physical – it involves mental, emotional and spiritual elements in equal measure. Her message is that living a long and healthy life isn't about the right diet, or taking vitamins and supplements. Instead, it requires a shift in perspective. A long life is all very well, but what are you living for? For many people today, finding one's purpose in life feels like an optional extra when we're busy working, raising children or caring for parents. It can be hard to know who we really are or what we want out of life. But Gladys insists we should still strive to identify our reason for getting out of bed every morning. And we should realise that all of life's experiences exist to teach us something. Gladys is a wonderful storyteller, who uses examples and anecdotes from her own, purpose-driven life to explain the secrets that she shares in her book. She reveals how the devastation of her husband asking for a divorce, when she was 70, eventually became her strength. Rather than stay a victim of heartbreak, she made a choice to move forward and help others. And that's a common theme that comes up in this conversation – the fact that we always have a choice. This is a wonderful, life-affirming conversation about the very essence of life and health. It was a real privilege and honour to talk to Gladys - I hope you enjoy listening.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Gladys McGarey: The Well-Lived Life Gladys McGarey is 102 years old and a still-practicing doctor. Recognized as a pioneer of the allopathic and holistic medical movements, she is also a founding diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. Gladys lives and works in Scottsdale, Arizona, where for many years she shared a medical practice with her daughter. She currently has a medical consulting practice, maintains a healthy diet, and enjoys a good piece of cake every now and then. She has spoken at TEDx and is the author of The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Any Age*. Our efforts in leadership development, personal growth, or getting better at anything, are all about starting. In this conversation, Gladys and I discuss the critical nature of movement in our lives and work. We also explore how to identify where to start and why it's more about beginning that finishing. Key Points All life needs to move. If we're not moving, we can't function. Stuckness is an illusion. If we know what to look for, movement is all around us and within us. A flashlight in the dark can only see a few steps ahead — but that's enough to move in the right direction and begin seeing more. Look for the trickle around the dam. Noticing where movement already is will often be the starting point to go further. Doctors don't heal patients, only patients can heal themselves. Pay attention to beginning instead of finishing.
