And so, to answer this, we're not going to discuss what the listener can do to fix their family member's problems, even though that might be the urge that arises in us instantly. Instead, we'll talk about ideas of codependency, and highlight the importance of not anchoring our emotional wellbeing on the state of other's. Finding ways to take care of ourselves is very important, so that we can be better resourced. We're not going to help our depressed family member by getting depressed as well, and it can be very easy to catch the emotions of others. At first, alcohol helped relieve her symptoms but years later she found herself suffering a mental breakdown and shaking from alcohol withdrawal every time she tried to stop. Maddie finally surrendered and found recovery through filmmaking and fellowship. Maddie shares exactly how she uses the power of creativity and community to arrest her own and other people's addictions, depression and anxiety. Nuala McGovern is joined by one woman who has had a huge impact on the women's game over many years - Hope Powell - the former Lioness head coach will discuss England's chances, the growth of the game and how to continue building a legacy for women's sport. A fifth of young women suffering a mental health crisis were asked if they were on their period, a new survey has found. Research by the prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) also found that women's calls for help were sometimes dismissed. We talk to Wendy Robinson, Head of Services at Suicide prevention charity, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) Dr Gladys McGarey, cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association, began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts. Now a 102 and still practicing as a doctor, she was born in India in 1920. She started medical school just before the Second World War, married a fellow doctor, Bill and together they practised medicine, first in Ohio, then In Arizona. They also produced six children. Dr Gladys has now written a book, The Well-Lived Life. Deirdre O'Kane became a stand-up comic in 1996, getting to the finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards of that year. A co-founder of Comic Relief in Ireland, she also fronted her own talk shows, Deirdre O'Kane Talks Funny on RTÉ as well as a brand-new series, The Deirdre O'Kane Show on Sky Max. One of Ireland's favourite comedians, she is also known for acting roles such as Chris O'Dowd's Moone Boy and the biopic of philanthropist and children's rights stalwart Christina Noble called Noble, for which she received an IFTA Award. Deirdre joins Nuala to discuss her wide-ranging career and her new stand up show Demented, which is coming to London's Soho Theatre this week. Since becoming CEO of CALM in January 2017, Simon has pursued a strategy of growth that has seen the charity transform its brand and operations, and more than double its helpline service provision to reach more people in crisis. Prior to CALM, Simon led the digital, marketing and commercial divisions of Virgin Media TV, EMI Music, the BBC, Bacardi and BBH. Michael helps UM's clients understand their audiences and marketplaces by leading the agency's consumer insight department. After five years at UM, Michael has recently taken on the additional responsibility of leading the agency's Better World vision, which is their strategy for ensuring the agency makes a positive impact on the world we operate in. Meet Paul Shepherd everyone. A guy who has been through the darkest times with depression, alcohol and drugs but lived through it, a guy who is facing his demons and telling his story. After feeling three years ago like there was no other option in his life other than to end it, Paul has come a long way. He’d been struggling with a lifestyle in which he was constantly exhausted with night shifts and medicating with alcohol and drugs, and one January night in 2017 he waded into the freezing British sea with the intention never to return. Paul’s story was featured in Outrunning the Demons, the collection of survival stories by former podcast guest Phil Hewitt. Paul’s now a running mentor for the incredible charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and is determined to help others feel there is another option out there, that they can feel connected to the world again. In the UK every day 12 men under the age of 45 take their own lives – a truly shocking statistic. In 1978, this Strong Manchester Woman’s life changed forever. It was the year her youngest son Geoffrey was born. Geoffrey has Down’s syndrome and Bernie struggled to cope. That was until she came across a unique support service, designed for especially for mums like her. In this episode, your host Vic Elizabeth Turnbull speaks to Bernie Wood, the general manager of Talbot House, a brilliant, user-led support service for parents carers of children with severe learning disabilities. The service is based in North Manchester and is ran by Bernie, who’s 80 years old and has been doing this for 40 years - and shows no sign of slowing down!
