Jonny Bentwood is the Global Head of Data & Analytics at Golin. Jonny is an innovative leader with 15+ years of experience in communications - winning, retaining and working for Fortune 100 clients such as Facebook, Unilever, Heineken, Barclays, HP and Microsoft. He has a proven record as a creator of pioneering solutions with ability to transform business to radically impact bottom line. Jonny presents complex information in an engaging and informative style and is a strategic consultant to executives using data to provide guidance on reputational and crisis issues and maximising marketing campaigns. In this episode, Jonny tells a story about how MTV got in touch with him to apply data in figuring out who would most likely win The Apprentice. After being in the industry for over twenty years, he believes this is the best time to be in data. CMOS are spending more of their money than ever before on analytics. How do data scientist prove their value? People use data purely in a descriptive way. To succeed and bring value to clients, one needs to switch from describing the data to telling the customer what they need to do with the data. Set the goals of who, what, and why to figure out which message will be most useful before you even start. Take it a step further by using prescriptive data and make it predictive. This is where you study what will happen in the future. We are continually absorbing and understanding what things could happen and will happen. This opportunity is essential to identify issues before they occur and fix them. On Episode 69 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with Jonny Fraser about how tennis players should train when on the road. Whether we are top-ranked players or club players, we often find ourselves traveling to a different area for a tournament, USTA league competition, or match away from our home training centers, and don't know how we should train when away. Jonny and I discuss how you can best prepare yourself when heading to a different area or time zone, what to think about and prepare for before leaving, an awesome sample workout with exercises that you can implement into your training on the road, what equipment we should bring in our tennis bags (there won't always be a gym down the street!), recovery tips, and much more. Jonny is a fantastic guy and I finally got to introduce myself to him at this past year's World Tennis Fitness Conference in Atlanta (shot out to Dr. Mark Kovacs and the International Tennis Performance Association!). Jonny has presented at this conference and others over the past several years, and I've always learned a ton from his presentations. I asked him to come onto the podcast then and we finally made it happen, which I am obviously very happy about! Jonny has worked in tennis strength and conditioning for over ten years. He is currently the Head of Strength and Conditioning at Claudio Pistolesi Enterprise, and is the Assistant Director of Fitness at the Tennis Congress. Jonny also currently runs a business called Science in Tennis dedicated to helping you maximize your performance on court. Jonny acts as an Associate Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University as well, and is certified as a Master Tennis Performance Specialist by the iTPA, which is the highest level of certification. A pretty solid resume if you ask me :) It was a pleasure speaking with Jonny on the podcast, and I know you'll really enjoy this episode and learn a lot about how we can perform better on the court through training effectively on the road. Many thanks to Jonny for coming onto the podcast! Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments below! Time-Stamped Show Notes BEGINNINGS [5:17] How Jonny got his start in the tennis world [7:00] The injury that lit Jonny’s passion for tennis fitness [8:09] Why Jonny loves working in the tennis fitness niche [9:52] Three things most of the world doesn’t know about Jonny Fraser [12:41] What exactly is sports science and how has it evolved over the years? This week, Bruce & Hobbes are joined by: Jamie & Jonny (Toschi) & Nibbles - Inspirational Youth, (his Mom) & his “best buddy” Nibbles In the Spring of 2013, Jonny & his family met “Daisy,” a female Rouen duckling. An instant friendship was created, and he took her almost everywhere. For the most part, where Jonny went, Daisy went too. When Daisy was about 4 weeks old, she started having seizures, and the family thought Daisy wouldn’t live. Jonny was heartbroken, but eventually, she recovered and the two friends became even closer. Daisy became a part of the family, and although she continued to have seizures, they slowed down, and became less frequent as she grew. Daisy had fun, and lots of love. Jonny’s family didn’t know if Daisy would have ducklings, but one day, Daisy met Daffy, a Rouen drake – and it was LOVE at first sight! Jonny & his family were hopeful, and Daisy laid 10 eggs, which they incubated. Out of the 10 eggs, seven hatched – and Nibbles was the last egg Daisy laid apart from the others. Nibbles was actually born a month after his brothers & sisters, and actually hatched in Jonny’s hand, and an instant friendship was born. Sadly, one month after Nibbles was born, Daisy died, leaving Jonny devastated. He took hold of his new friend Nibbles, & never let go. The two have been best friends from the start, and Nibbles forged an everlasting bond with Jonny, & helps him with some of the challenges he faces, like ADHD, & OCD. Jonny, on the other hand, is Nibbles’ caretaker, and the two would be lost without each other. Seeing as Nibbles prefers the company of humans, and sees himself as one, the relationship between the two is truly a special bond! During their visit, Jamie & Jonny discuss: How Jonny & Nibbles met How Jonny moved on from the loss of one friend, and made another How Jonny’s friendship with Nibble grew deeper What the two friends do together How Nibbles helps Jonny with some of the challenges he faces, from ADHD and OCD What Jonny does for Nibbles And MUCH MORE!
