How exactly does a three-time Olympic gold medalist end up with alcohol use disorder? At just 16, Carrie Bates stood on the Olympic podium with a gold medal around her neck. To the world, she had it all — talent, drive, and glory. But behind the scenes, Carrie was fighting a growing battle with alcohol that nearly cost her everything. In this episode, Olympian Carrie Bates opens up about her journey from the top of the podium to nearly losing everything. Despite her success, Carrie saw many of the same warning signs many people face: denial, escalating drinking, and the belief that achievement meant she couldn't possibly have a problem. Surrounded by a culture that celebrated alcohol, she ignored loved ones' concerns and spiraled into dangerous behaviors — until a crisis forced her to confront the truth. Listen and learn: how cultural messages about alcohol normalize addiction the early warning signs of alcohol misuse, even for high achievers why recovery is not instant — and how resilience leads to lasting change Carrie's story is more than a cautionary tale. It's proof that recovery is possible, even after relapse and setbacks. By learning to surrender, ask for help, and reframe what strength truly means, she found lasting healing — and now uses her voice to help others do the same. Our guest, Carrie Bates, is an advocate for recovery. As a three-time Olympic gold medalist (OLY) in swimming and a person in recovery, she deeply understands the interplay of the drive for excellence, trauma, life changes, and addiction. Sharing her truth and living her recovery out loud has been at the center of her work. Since 2012, she has helped others access treatment and fought to end the stigma that surrounds the brain disease of substance use disorder. Carrie came to Caron Treatment Center in 2025 as director of strategic growth and advocacy. In her role, she works with partners in recovery to help more families in need access treatment and support services, promote Caron's neurorestorative approach to treatment, reduce stigma, and advance awareness about addiction as a brain disease and the benefits of recovery. Carrie is passionate about prevention, the importance of mental wellness, the impact of addiction on families, the difficulties women face in accessing treatment and recovery support, and the role of employers and workplaces to support recovery. Before coming to Caron, she served as an outreach manager for Hazelden Betty Ford where she worked directly with employers, patients, and their families to navigate the process of finding the treatment they need for sustainable recovery. Carrie has been a fixture in traditional media, podcasts and as a keynote speaker sharing her personal story, tips for families, and hope. Carrie spent the better part of her career before entering the treatment and recovery field as a sales and marketing career at Nike, Inc. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Michael Phelps BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Michael Phelps has been making headlines again, starting with a major TV moment as Swimming World confirms he's set to appear as a guest on ESPN's Monday Night Football ManningCast tonight, September 22, 2025, joining Peyton and Eli Manning for what promises to be a high-profile crossover between Olympic greatness and the NFL. This appearance, also highlighted by Awful Announcing on Threads, is being spotlighted in pre-show promotions and may generate substantial buzz, given Phelps' rare forays into live sports commentary. On the business front, Phelps' entrepreneurial and investment activities are gaining long-term relevance. According to the newsletter Idée Fixe, he's now not just a legendary swimmer but a noteworthy athlete-investor, joining the likes of Coco Gauff and Giannis Antetokounmpo as a key early backer and governance influencer for Unrivalled, a new women's 3x3 basketball league. His role goes beyond financial input; he's helping shape league governance and player equity, a powerful signal of how he's leveraging his status to expand influence in shaping the future of women's sports and athlete-driven entrepreneurship.Meanwhile, The Skills sports education platform, which counts Phelps among its featured Olympians, just closed a 5 million dollar seed round as reported on dot.LA. Phelps has contributed his own masterclass series on the platform, focusing on the mental strategies and leadership lessons from his record-setting swimming career. The Skills' model of democratizing world-class athlete knowledge positions Phelps as both a mentor and a sports business innovator, with projected expansion into new sports and broader educational impact. On the social media circuit, Phelps continues to be a ubiquitous pop-culture reference—his name trended last week on Threads where users playfully compared freestyling in music to his signature stroke in the pool, a testament to how deeply his legacy still resonates among diverse audiences. No new personal controversies or unconfirmed rumors have surfaced, and he is maintaining his reputation as a champion both in and out of the water. Phelps remains the only person in history with 23 Olympic gold medals, as recently reiterated by AOL in a retrospective piece on his enduring legacy, underscoring that even years after his last swim, his biographical significance continues to crescendo.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Michael Phelps BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Michael Phelps has been everywhere these past few days and the headlines prove it. If you caught any Baltimore Ravens coverage, you could not have missed the viral story of the 23-time Olympic gold medalist teaching Ravens players how to swim. It all started when Marlon Humphrey and several teammates posted a lighthearted plea on Instagram asking for a private Phelps swim clinic. To everyone's surprise, including Humphrey's, the Greatest of All Time not only responded but showed up in person at the Ravens' training camp, turning Loyola University's aquatic center into a scene straight out of a sports movie. Phelps, not above showing a little vulnerability, spoke openly to both the team and to Today show's Craig Melvin about his own childhood fears of water. He also brought in kids from the Boys and Girls Club to join the session, all in support of water safety and the work his Michael Phelps Foundation does. The event came with a meaningful $100,000 donation to the Foundation from the Ravens. According to Today and AOL, Phelps used the spotlight to promote drowning prevention—a mission that, in his words, can save lives and change communities.Business-wise, Phelps' name just popped in major headlines thanks to the meteoric rise of Unrivaled, the women's 3-on-3 basketball league. ESPN reports and Serena Williams herself promote that Unrivaled recently closed a major Series B financing round, launching the league to a whopping $340 million valuation. Phelps is a high-profile investor, which puts him squarely at the center of women's professional sports innovation—an athlete leveraging his influence in ventures well outside the swimming pool. Unrivaled doubled first-season revenue expectations and is moving swiftly on expansion and larger venues, with investors from across the sports world backing its player-centric, equity-minded business. In terms of global appearances, there's buzz building around the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York City in late September. As of now, there are rumors swirling in organizer circles that Phelps could make an appearance, though as of this week, neither public schedules nor official press releases confirm his participation.Social media, naturally, has lit up with images and videos of Phelps grinning pool-side with the Ravens, while sports media—from clicky gossip columns to ESPN ticker crawls—spotlights his continued role as an advocate, investor, and motivational force. A few international sites murmured about him visiting the Delhi Capitals IPL cricket camp for a quick cameo and pep talk, but details remain sketchy and unconfirmed by Phelps' reps as of today. No scandals or dramatic controversies, just a wave of positive press, charitable impact, and one of the most decorated Olympians proving he's as relevant in business boardrooms as he is beside the pool. If his moves with Unrivaled are any indication, Michael Phelps' post-swimming biography is just hitting its next chapter.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Despite growing up with no opportunity to play on girls hockey teams, they did not let that stop them from developing into some of the best players in the state. They attended Shattuck St. Mary's School where they elevated the women's hockey program to national prominence and won three national titles during their high school careers. The Lamoureux twins rewrote the record books at the University of North Dakota, setting nearly every individual record in program history while becoming some of the best players in NCAA history and multiple-time All-Americans during their collegiate careers. During their 15 years on the USA Women's National Team, Monique and Jocelyne rose to become two of the all-time greats in women's hockey, winning one Olympic gold medal, two Olympic silver medals, six world championships and one world championship runner-up, along with multiple individual awards and accolades. They are USA Hockey Hall of Fame inductees and 2nd and 3rd youngest North Dakota natives to be given the Teddy Roosevelt Award in the State of North Dakota. Their most important victories have come off the ice in their fight for gender equity for women in hockey and sports. They were key leaders in negotiating Team USA's first-ever contract that provided more opportunities, compensation and benefits for women and girls who play hockey in America. They continue to give back to the state of North Dakota through the Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux Foundation, which helps serve underprivileged youth. They have inspired a generation to dream big, but most importantly their legacy will be about making a difference in people's lives as they strive toward those dreams. Over the last year, we got a little carried away trying to organize the podcast into its own channels and destinations. The idea was to make things easier, but I realize now—it just created more confusion. That's on us. And I really appreciate your patience. So here's what we're doing to fix it: ✅ Every single episode of the Tom Rowland Podcast is now back where it belongs (Saltwater Experience YouTube Channel) ✅ We've built organized playlists so you can find exactly what you're looking for — Full Lengths, How-To Tuesdays, Physical Fridays, Behind the Scenes, and more. From Here Forward…this is home!

In 1975, the world of Track & Field was sent into a state of shock at the sudden death of Steve Prefontaine. The charismatic 24-year old perished in a car accident shortly after dropping off his good friend and fellow distance runner, 1972 Olympic Gold Medalist in the marathon, Frank Shorter. Frank would be the last person to see Pre alive. A month later at the AAU Track n Field championships in Eugene, OR, Shorter ran with determination and a heavy heart, winning the 10,000 meters in front of Steve's hometown fans who gave Frank a long and emotional ovation for winning his race. It was a surreal month for Shorter and running helped him get through this tumultuous time… as it always had before. Frank started running to see how good he could be. He didn't set out to win medals or gain fame… he just wanted to get better… to improve over time… and he did just that eventually becoming the best distance runner the U.S. had to offer. He was in Munich in 1972 awaiting his time to run the marathon when members of the Palestinian militant organization Black September stormed the Olympic Village and murdered two Israeli athletes. As the hostage crisis ensued, Shorter didn't know what to expect and when all of the athletes died he figured the Olympics would be called. But they weren't, and 4 days later, Frank took to the streets of Munich looking to close out the Games in style and give the people something to cheer for. However, as he entered the stadium with just a lap to go in the marathon, there was silence. No cheering… just whistling… the European way of booing. Why were they jeering instead of cheering? As Frank neared the finish line it became clear… an imposter had come into the stadium ahead of Shorter and crossed the finish line… and the fans were having none of it… they knew that America's Frank Shorter was the winner and they were booing the fraud that had stolen Frank's moment… but he didn't steal his Gold. And Frank says to this day he doesn't think about that moment being tarnished in any way because he wasn't running for accolades. He was running for himself… and he knew on this day… that there was nobody faster in the world at 26.2 miles than he was. 50 years later he still gets emotional when talking about his friend Steve. He tells us about the two movies made about his buddy and how he played a part in both of them. He says on the Past Our Prime podcast that how Steve died is not what the authorities will have you believe and that the details of his death are not accurate for a reason. Frank talks at length about the quiet determination his friend had as a runner, and as an advocate for other runners. Mostly, Frank recollects about a 24-year old man who was gone way, way too soon… The only American to ever medal in the Olympic Marathon twice… Frank Shorter on the Past Our Prime podcast. Maddie Musselman Woepse has an incredible story; complete with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Through it all her passion, positivity, composure and resilience absolutely shines through. Truly amazing. Maddie's path to becoming a three time Olympic athlete, a two time gold medalist, Olympic MVP and one of the most decorated athletes in women's water polo. Her accomplishments are based on those very same traits… and she talks about her incredible journey. Maddie met her match in another “hard charger” in her husband Patrick Woepse. Patrick was a celebrated collegiate 2x NCAA water polo champ who went on to swim both the Catalina Channel and the English Channel. The latter crossing was completed with an incredible group of friends, great conditions and “with a cough.” Shortly after completing that swim that cough was diagnosed as NUT Carcinoma cancer, which sadly took his life after battling for 13 months; at only 31 years old. The story of Pat's fight, with Maddie by his side, while training for her third Olympics is a chicken skin memoir. Today, Pat's legacy is vibrant and clearly embodied in the Patrick Woepse Foundation which is focusing on helping others with NUT Carcinoma and operating under Pat's mantra of “We Can Do Hard Things.” Maddie continues to be a positive and inspirational force in so many ways, to so many people, and is an incredible example of living, and leading by Pat's mantra… every day.

For their first (of hopefully many) podcast double dates, Abby and Glennon sit down with the icons, activists, and Olympians Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird. In this honest and hilarious conversation, we find out: 1. The delightfully awkward moment Megan and Sue first met; 2. What's hard for each of them right now; 3. The boundaries they're working on together; 4. How they communicate and deal with jealousy; and 5. How they help each other show up in the world as champions for change. About Sue: Regarded as the world's premier point guard, Sue Bird is the WNBA's All-Time Leader in Assists and known for being selfless, driven, encouraging, funny and smart. Bird is a seasoned veteran and a born leader who has dominated at every level. She is one of only seven women to win an Olympic Gold Medal (she's won five), a World Championship Gold Medal (she's won four) an NCAA Championship (she's won two), and a WNBA Championship (she's won four – the last just weeks before her 40th birthday). Sue is also a five-time Euroleague Champion, a twelve- time WNBA All-Star, was voted by the fans as one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time. Off the court, Sue spends time as a basketball analyst for ESPN and as an outspoken and visible activist advocating for Black Lives, equality, health and wellness and expanding opportunities for girls and all marginalized people. TW: @S10Bird IG: @suebird10 About Megan: Two-time World Cup Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Megan Rapinoe is a fan favorite and one of the team's most technical and craftiest players. A vocal leader on and off the pitch, Megan helped lead the USWNT to the 2019 Women's World Cup Championship scoring some of the biggest goals of the tournament. Megan took home the tournament's two top honors – the Golden Boot for top scorer, and the Golden Ball for the best player in the tournament. Megan is an advocate for equality for all and has been able to intersect her passion for humanity and authenticity.
