FLW Special - Purple Rain at 40           In this very special episode, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the film “Purple Rain”.  The overwhelming success of the movie made Prince the first artist in history to have the same project simultaneously #1 on the singles, albums, and movie charts in the United States.           We speak to one of the foremost Prince experts; author and podcaster Alan Light.  Alan talks about the creation of Purple Rain the song, the album and the movie.  He also reveals… How the version of the title track that we're all familiar with was recorded in one take at a fundraiser. It was also the first time that 19-year-old Wendy Melvoin had played with the band. Movie executives didn't want to cast Prince in the lead role, and suggested much more famous star (who would have been badly miscast!) How Prince tried to recruit Stevie Nicks to help with the lyrics for “Purple Rain” - and why she said no. How the movie has held up well (for its live performances) and been held up to ridicule (for its acting performances and misogyny). Prince's tenuous relationship with Morris Day & The Time – and his greatest musical regret. Alan Light is the prolific author of many music biographies, including his books about Tupac Shakur, Nina Simone and The Beastie Boys.  He also collaborated on “My Cross To Bear”, the Gregg Allman autobiography and Peter Frampton's “Do You Feel Like I Do”.  Other books include “The Holy Or The Broken” – a great history of the Leonard Cohen masterpiece “Hallelujah”; and of course, “Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the making of Purple Rain”.   Alan is also the co-host of the “Sound Up” podcast with his good friend Marc Goodman.

This particular podcast episode found its inspiration in one of the Spotify-exclusive Rock Pop and Roll Radio Shows that we've made. They live on Spotify and were created to give me a chance to make an old-school radio show. Listen for 90 minutes to one and hear stories plus the whole song, something we don't do on the podcast. A callback to the great radio of the 70's and 80's.   I was working on a podcast about Minneapolis roots rock/heartland rock bands and how they were oddly influential in the 1980's musical landscape.  Then I remembered this Prince Spotify radio show I produced and thought - hey - this is part of the story.  How Prince - who music listeners know is from Minnesota - and a bunch of white kids with guitars could exist and, in a sense, inspire each other. Prince was a mashup of what he heard growing up.  That was his secret to crossover success. Filmmaker Philip Priestley, who made a 2008 documentary comparing the careers of Prince and Michael Jackson, said that growing up in Minneapolis helped Prince to create a new sound. "He grew up listening to a lot of radio which was other stuff than black soul music and rhythm and blues," Priestley said. “He was listening to rock -- white rock -- which explains why he was so unique musically. "He fused a black American tradition -- rhythm and blues, soul, funk, jazz -- with white rock."  That's what we peel back here, trying to figure out the connection between it all.   SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Read Rob's current and archived writing at rockforward.wordpress.com EMAIL: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com FACEBOOK: @rockpopandroll INSTAGRAM: @rockpopandroll TWITTER: @rockpoprollpod

Give Grace to Yourself (Not Just Others) with guest, Kathy Gaalaas Digital Strategist, Kathy Gaalaas, joins Coach Elix to discuss how to manage tough situations with grace. Not just by being graceful to other people — but, more importantly, by being graceful to YOURSELF. We often forget about ourselves when we think about grace, but we deserve to treat ourselves with kindness.  Listen today to learn how to be gracious with yourself and not impose too many responsibilities on yourself.  Kathy Gaalaas is a coach and digital strategist that helps artists, musicians, and small business owners perfect and grow their digital presence.  Timestamps:  [02:25] A story about Steven that he wouldn't want me to tell! [06:30] The most common definition of grace.  [09:04] Why did Kathy choose to work with artists and musicians?  [12:11] How Prince influenced the name of her business.  [16:57] What does grace mean to YOU? [19:00] Why is it hard to be gracious to yourself?  [24:00] Why do you always feel like you are not doing enough (and how to break out of that).  [28:14] How can we define responsibility in a healthy way (without guilt)?  [35:24] How do you thank yourself when no one is thanking you?  [39:43] Actions you can take today to be more gracious with yourself. [48:15] Rapid fire round with Kathy. 5 Key Takeaways:  Your business can only be sustainable if you actually enjoy what you are spending your time doing.  It is much easier for us to be gracious with others than it is to be gracious with ourselves. Here are a few things you can do to be more gracious with yourself: Look in your life for someone who made a difference in your life and call them randomly to thank them. Write down 3 things that are unique to you that you add to the world (e.g., I make people laugh). Pick one day every month to dedicate to yourself.  You might feel like there is always more to do, and there probably is. However, you have to accept moments for what they are and knowing that this moment will pass. Take a breath and center yourself. Ask yourself: "Do I need to react right now or do I need to listen or do I need to observe?" When you think of responsibility, don't start with blaming yourself or being on the defensive. Step back and ask yourself where you can make the biggest difference and sometimes the best way you can make a difference is by taking care of yourself.  Give yourself kudos and know that what you are doing for yourself matters.    If you found value in this episode, please leave a 5-star review so we can continue inspiring you! Davis tells us how he got the idea for such an ambitious piece, how the project evolved from an initial concept involving a plinth and lucite embedment, and some of the many struggles he underwent while creating it. David also takes us back to his memories of hanging out with Kip Blackshire and developing a working relationship with Prince, and the lessons about bravery and commitment he learned along the way. Tune in for a fantastic episode. Key Points From This Episode: The hustle of making art and how David lived in his car partially after finishing art school.
