Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Why Your Goals Keep Getting Blown Off Course June 9, 2025 | Episode - 5111 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description You're hard-wired for goals, whether you realize it or not. If you're not setting them consciously, everyone else is setting them for you. Scott breaks down why most people struggle with goal achievement using his pilot's perspective on “flying crooked.” Life will blow you off course like wind affects an airplane, but that doesn't mean you should take detours or stepping stones. Learn why going straight to what you want works better than building up to it, and how to make those crucial wind corrections when life gets in the way. Featured Story Scott shares insights from a recent Fisher Passion coaching call where a friend wanted to build up gradually to making a TV show instead of going directly for his goal. This leads to Scott's airplane metaphor about flying crooked - how pilots compensate for wind by pointing slightly into it to reach their destination. Just like pilots need wind correction to avoid missing their airport, you need goal correction to avoid missing your dreams. Important Points Your mind and body are naturally designed to pursue goals, so if you're not setting them deliberately, others will set them for you. Taking “stepping stone” jobs or building up to your actual goal often backfires - go directly toward what you want as fast as possible. Life will blow you off course like wind affects an airplane, so expect it and make constant corrections rather than getting frustrated. Memorable Quotes “If you're not setting goals for yourself and deciding where you want to go, then your body and your mind and everybody around you are setting goals for you, which is why you're not getting what you want.” “Why would you give up a year or two or three or five of your life to see if it's going to work out as a stepping stone?” “Life gets in the way. It's going to blow you around. Expect it's going to happen.” Scott's Three-Step Approach Set clear goals for yourself instead of letting others set them for you - you're hard-wired for goal achievement, anyway. Go directly toward what you want rather than taking stepping stone positions or building up gradually to your real objective. Expect life to blow you off course like wind affects an airplane, then make constant corrections to stay headed toward your destination. This week, PC Tunney & Dave take a look at the Conference Finals in both the NHL and NBA. In the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes have failed, miserably to live up to their nickname as they are being drubbed by the defending champion Florida Panthers. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars are waging a tighter battle, but many signs are pointing to a Stanley Cup Finals rematch this season. In the NBA, one series is all about home-court advantage, and the other? Not so much as the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks give new meaning to the term road warriors. The guys also talk about the NFL allowing its players to compete in flag football at the 2028 Olympics (good luck to the rest of the world) and the CFP making a big shift in its format by going to straight seeding for next year's playoffs. LEADERS WHO GET 90% RIGHT ARE MORE THAN 10% OFF COURSE IN THE END“IMHO, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is to success what 1000 iu vitamin D3 is to a healthy immune system. It's not bad, it's just not all there is. Vitamins are necessary because today's food supply is woefully lacking in nutrients to keep a human healthy and thriving. The advice available recommending supplements to boost the success of the system, often provide marginally enough of what is needed to maintain status quo, just not enough to thrive beyond average. I am sad to say, the advice of many success gurus would fall in the same classification. It's not bad stuff, its just not all there is and not enough to thrive. Hear me out. Subscriber-only episodeFailure hits us all differently. For some, it's a client rejection. For others, a partnership dissolving. But what about when our own bodies become the source of our frustration? This raw, vulnerable exploration delves into my personal kryptonite - physical pain. When my hip gives out (yes, like an 80-year-old's might), it doesn't just hurt physically. It completely derails my mental state, throwing me into a spiral that feels worse than business failures or family conflicts. Why? Because I've wired myself to depend on daily movement for mental balance and clarity.During my recent weekend breakdown, I realized something profound: we need personalized safeguards against our unique triggers. When something knocks us down - whether physical limitations, disappointing sales figures, or critical feedback - having a predetermined healthy response strategy changes everything. Instead of reaching for chocolate caramels (guilty as charged) or spiraling into self-pity, we can redirect that energy toward productive tasks that help us regain our footing. What throws you off balance? More importantly, what will you do when it happens? Take time today to identify your triggers and document specific, healthy responses that will keep you moving forward. Your future self will thank you when you're able to bounce back faster from those inevitable falls. Write it down, refer to it often, and transform your relationship with adversity.
