ian is an awesome guy and we talk about his career and then about a subject we are passionate about but is often overlooked and that is Team Leaders. Thankfully Centrical have focused on Team Leaders and Ian shares the recent developments in their offering.
The West Indies emerge as a force in Cricket as Frank Worrell leads the team to Australia in 1960. South Africa is banned from International Cricket in 1970 due to apartheid. Kerry Packer becomes a major disruptor in International Cricket as he signs up top players for World Series of Cricket.
Billy Birmingham is The Twelfth Man. He is also Richie Benaud, Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell, Tony Greig, and dozens of other characters across a series of insanely popular 12th Man records. Between 1984 and 2006, all seven 12th Man albums, plus two singles, landed at #1 on the ARIA chart. It's quite a feat. Here, Billy goes through the recording process for his albums, does a ton of impersonations (Barnesy, Farnesy, Richie) and shows off his new talking stubby holders. This interview was done in November 2011, and has been revived for the podcast era.

The Australian batsman Vic Richardson played in the first Bodyline series and was terrorised by the English bowlers. His grandson was the gimlet-eyed Australian captain Ian Chappell. Having heard so many of his grandfather's stories, he vowed revenge. In 1974/5 he unleashed the marauding Dennis Lillee and the supersonic Jeff Thomson on England – the fastest, nastiest pair of bowlers in history. England were battered to a chastening defeat. We hear from Ian Chappell as he explains the joy he took in exacting revenge for his grandfather whilst David Lloyd tells a hilarious story of being hit in the box and knocking the ‘dints' out in the changing room before his next innings.
Many Ashes series have been won by pairs of great bowlers. In this episode, the most potent combinations – from Lillee and Thompson, Botham and Willis, Warne and McGrath to the most recent deadly duo, Anderson and Broad.James Anderson and Stuart Broad explain how they work together to methodically analyse conditions and opponents and recognise when they need to do the heavy lifting and cover for their mate.Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne discus the importance of building pressure as a pair and how they would come together to strangle the opposition. Ian Chappell also gives a telling insight into managing a pair of bowling aces, in his case Lillee and Thompson. He reveals how he first had to get them to stop competing with each other in order to get the best from them.
Some cricketers we love at first sight; some, we take time to appreciate; others, we do not understand the fuss; and still others are quick to get under our skins. Often, we review our views over time - and often surprise ourselves by changing our opinions about cricketers. Kapil Dev, Ishant Sharma, Ravi Shastri, Ian Chappell, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Steve Waugh - all formidable cricketers. All of whom we have changed our minds over at various stages. And all of whom we focus on in this episode - to understand the evolution of our fandom. Talking Points: What Kapil Dev chasing Hadlee's record meant for many young fans The staggering image of Kapil being a combination of Bumrah and Pant Ishant Sharma's arrival in Test cricket - and the 'trolling' years that followed Post-2016 Ishant - the most improved Indian cricketer this decade? The Ravi Shastri stereotypes - and how it is easy to be trapped by all of them The legendary forthrightness of Ian Chappell Rahul Dravid's purple patch - and why that record needs to be revisited Mohammad Azharuddin: a glorious rise, an inglorious fall Steve Waugh and the danger of hyping 'mental disintegration' Sachin Tendulkar - the slow journey from hero to mortal Support 81allout on Ko-Fi Participants: Siddhartha Vaidyanathan (@sidvee) Prashant DP (@prashantdptweet) Mahesh Sethuraman (@cornerd) Ashoka (@ABVan) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buy The Summer Game by Gideon Haigh (recently republished by 81allout) India (hardback) | India (paperback) | India (e-copy) Australia (paperback, e-copy) USA (hardback, paperback, e-copy) UK (hardback, paperback, e-copy) Canada (hardback, paperback, e-copy) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Related: Talking fandom: love, loyalty, and a sense of belonging - 81allout podcast That special whistle: the phenomenon called CSK - 81allout podcast Conversation with veteran journalist Pradeep Magazine - 81allout podcast Whatever happened to Ravi Shastri 1.0 - Sharda Ugra - ESPNcricinfo History's witness: The IPL final, as Ravi Shastri saw it - Siddhartha Vaidyanathan - Yahoo Cricket Ishant Sharma interview with Gaurav Kapoor - Breakfast with Champions - YouTube Ian Chappell on captaincy and much more - 81allout podcast The inscrutable craftsman - Rohit Brijnath - ESPNcricinfo Like father, like son - Siddhartha Vaidyanathan - ESPNcricinfo Out of my Comfort Zone - Steve Waugh autobiography - Amazon Captain courageous, like Tendulkar, vs Rihanna - Mukul Kesavan - NDTV

And in addition to discovering, in the most fiendish test of cricket knowledge to date, whether Wajahatullah Wasti was a bowler who took no wickets in his three Tests for Pakistan in the 1950s or was a politician in the country's National Assembly who moonlighted as a Sufi poet, you will also hear the wise words of the nicest man in cricket, Chris Woke, during the interval, as the Warwickshire and England swing bowler and social justice warrior takes time out from his busy injury schedule to raise the pressing issues of the day and embarks on his one-man mission to save cricket: Forced Inclusion
Muhammad Rizwan with his prolific form especially in T20 format has earned him the honors to be crowned as the ICC Player of the month for September. M Rizwan's opening partner Babar Azam is not far behind when it comes to acknowledgment of his batting traits. Ian Chappell recently wrote an article and he was full of praises for Babar Azam. It turned out that Ian Chappell is a Babar Azam Fan. More good news for Pakistan as NewZealand will tour to Pakistan twice. Once in December of 2022 and this in April-May 2023.
