For most people, the legendary Belfast character of Buck Alec will ring a bell. Infamous for his pet lion and street-fighting career, he was even rumoured to have worked with Al Capone. But Buck Alec Robinson wasn't just some sort of loveable street-fighting rogue - according to many he was also a ruthless sectarian killer as a member of the Ulster Special Constabulary. Who really was Buck Alec – the archetypical Belfast hardman? Ciarán Dunbar is joined by historian Joe Baker. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The story of Daniel in the lions' den is an extraordinary example of what it looks like to obey God even if it means risking one's own life. Our situation might not always look as drastic as Daniel's -- but God might not always rescue us like He did with Daniel, either. At the end of the day, our focus needs to be Kingdom first and not on this world, because our obedience to Him will be rewarded in eternity.
The story of Daniel in the lion's den is just one example of a man's obedience to God even when it potentially cost him his life. God may not always rescue you like He did Daniel, but your obedience to Him will be rewarded in eternity. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/640/29

You must control it or it will control you. I circle him slowly, and his blindfolded eyes still turn toward me, like a flower blindly following the sun. He cannot move his head far, not with his wrists bound above his head. His cheek meets his upper arm as I pass behind him, swishing the whip as I go. I continue around, and he turns his face toward the other side, listening to the slight whisper of the leather tail against the floor and the steady, slow tap of my heels. How much of him at this moment is animal, instinctively following the sounds of danger... or maybe the scent of food, of my blood? And how much of him is intelligent being, calculating when I will strike, anticipating what I will say, and how to react? I brush a gloved finger over his bare nipple and he moans, a sound that seems to send a vibration straight between my legs. He is so hungry right now, not for blood--he's had plenty of that--but for everything I have promised. Control, discipline, ecstasy, and release. A fine sheen of red appears on his chest. His body still reacts much the way a normal 28-year-old man's would, only now he has only blood instead of sweat, only blood instead of semen or tears. I cluck my tongue. "Control the blood," I whisper, for that is what he is here to prove he can do.

Today is about locking in on the concept of getting just a little better each day. We talk about how the process of improving is the main goal and how locking yourself into a race performance can backfire and snowball in the wrong direction. We look at being flexible and making decisions that keep things moving the right direction. Also, not overshooting realism in training and in life. Clear the deck on the daily for better performance. Don't lock yourself into the idea that racing is the purpose. Building a little bit each day gives you the confidence and perspective to set yourself up for a good season. Go the Opposite direction from Tri-Calc. Topics: Proceed with caution New year, new offices, new goals Over-shooting Realism Attaching ourselves to one thing Don't waste time between time Adaptable and Flexible Honing Apathy Accepting Emotions for what they are Having perspective on commitment Defining ourselves into a box Putting it out there as an excuse People quite because they don't want to know the answer Clearing the deck for better performance Putting yourself out there bare naked is hard Distancing ourselves from being just a triathlete The opposite of Tri-Calc We act like we're in control Building cars The inflexible athlete Have more fun Hayden's First Pro Hockey game The evolution of excuses A race is Not Your Purpose Mike the Lion Tamer? In law school, we learn how to think like a lawyer. We develop the analytical skills we need to analyze a case, draft documents, research legal issues and provide sound legal advice to our clients. But like many professionals, we don't spend a lot of time studying the human component of the practice of law. While some of us come to the practice with strong interpersonal skills, many of us have not been in a position to lead prior to entering the profession. As lawyers move up the ranks this can create problems. Lawyers who are individual contributors may provide outstanding legal services to their clients. But as they move into leadership roles in their firms, they need a different set of skills. And if they don't have those skills, that can create a bad culture. Moreover, a bad work environment can cause numerous problems for a law firm. For starters, it can cause turnover which can be costly. As someone who spent many years earning a living in the recruiting business, I know how much it can cost to replace a good lawyer. So what can law firms do? To address some of the behaviors which are impeding the success of their firm, my guest, Carol Marzouk, has some answers Carol is CEO and Chief Executive Lion Tamer for Leadership ‘N Soul. Her business is all about transforming behavior, relationships, and culture in the workplace. She founded it on the principle that nobody has to endure a toxic boss, toxic employees, or a toxic workplace. In this episode, Carol shares some tips for how to improve the culture, your firm and how to lead more effectively. I met Carol through my ProVisors business network, and I can say with certainty that she is someone who was very insightful and very generous with her time. She is also a pleasure to speak to. Listen in for a great conversation about how to deal with toxicity in the workplace. Whether you work with toxic people or recognize some of those behaviors in yourself, Carol has some great advice.
This topic is near and dear to my heart, because I experienced it over and over in the workplace and it played a big role in what drove me to write my book, in 2017, titled, Surviving the Dick Clique. Narcissism is a self-centered personality style characterized as having an excessive interest in one's physical appearance and an excessive preoccupation with one's own needs, often at the expense of others. In this episode we will be hearing psychotherapist, Dr. Leslie Austin, otherwise known by her clients affectionately as the "Lion Tamer". Hear her break down the best ways to recognize a narcissist and better yet, how to deal with them.
How do you pronounce “San Gorgonio,” Slushies? How do you say “Schuylkill?” We talk regional accents, local knowledge, and artistic craft-- from the risks of the pathetic fallacy to the unknowability of metaphor, the art of ambiguity, and, of course, the golden shovel. Join us for an episode devoted to poems by Marko Capoferri where we discuss poetic craft, resonant symbols, and the peculiar power of telephone poles. What can't you pronounce where you live? Links to things we discuss that you may dig: Eula Biss's “Time and Distance Overcome” Jennifer L. Knox's “Irwin Allen Vs. The Lion Tamer” At the table: Katheleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, Larissa Morgano & Kate Wagner This episode is brought to you by one of our sponsors, Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. Marko Capoferri has lived and worked in eight US states, including Montana, where he currently resides. He is an incoming MFA candidate at the University of Montana in Missoula. He is desperately seeking fellow Italian-Americans in Montana for good pasta and raised voices. Instagram: Instagram.com/markocapoferri San Gorgonio White paper coffee cups collect in drifts by the freeway exit ramp—the hearts of ghosts once held tight then tossed out the window of a car speeding across the desert at four a.m. trying to stay awake to see, when the light came back, what the battered face of the land could tell us about ourselves: how the mountains were stark and risen; how we were sunk dumb in between, a scathing plain of wind turbines resonating unearthly as Amelia Earhart's flooded engines chugging their final gasp on the ocean floor; how the sea was here once and swallowed heights, long since yawned and pulled away paving this desert with a tired yellow dirt now blown through our teeth, through our beating pistons, and a few black rounded stones as souvenirs from lost time; how thistle-studded towns were hardly refuge; how the many stones we had gathered were bright and jagged, too young by design to tell any real story; how lust and lost became an exchange in glances through a motel's cracked facade; how these roads kept on dressing down like lightning on a postcard running fingers in the hot mouth of experience. Self-portrait with Elegy Just like we were on the Great Plains in 1949, my father and I would gather summer nights with neighbors lining our country road to watch constellations disbanding. Whether tragedy or a tragic lack of imagination, it's hard to say—he and I simply could not see any threads or their severing. Then, as now, telephone wires also lined the road linking the night one lighted island at a time, though the wires are now dead gestures, props to a faded empire of distant voices made close but never close enough to turn that light into warmth. What's left—sinking into my own humidity, my own expanse of darkness, and he to his own. As you read this it is surely a summer night some place the land extends forever until it gives up where the visible begins to visibly waver, either from the heat or from the failure of the possibilities of sight.
