Steve Hui was one of my early guests on this podcast back in 2018. How our experience of business, life, and travel has changed in four years. I wanted to invite Steve back as a refresher of how our experience as a society has evolved, for better or worse maybe, in a world battered by Covid19 and all the border closure pain that has plagued the airline sector. Airlines are posting record losses as we enter year three of the pandemic but also, lost experienced staff due to layoffs and restructures. Many of us just want to fly and not expect extensive airport delays or endless flight changes to do so. A recap of who is Steve is probably in order. For over 17 years, Steve applied his skills solving complex problems in senior finance roles in corporations including Macquarie Bank but made the brave move to leave the corporate world to start his own business inspired by his innovative thinking, his passion for travel and a burning desire to optimise things. Steve is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales. Then a new business idea evolved. It all started when he flew for the very first time in business class over 14 years ago on a business trip, and he was hooked. Since then, he has religiously researched and tested his knowledge in extracting the best ways to maximise the points to fly (and ideally fly business class). Established in 2012, iFLYflat is the leader in reward points management. They are the experts in Points Advice and Flight Bookings. iFLYflat provides a fully managed service helping businesses and individuals to uncover the true value of their airline and credit card points. So let's explore what that looks like in late 2022 including: How did iFLYflat survive and maybe even thrive in the past few years when the pandemic changed travel in many ways for a very long time? How have flyer points programs you work with changed and is that better or worse for most travellers? How can we maximise our flyer points if we travel less now that say Zoom meetings replaced a lot of business travel in particular? How else have reward programs had to create more value that we may not be aware of? Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The NEW Politics of Flyer Points? After two years grounded, Australia's frequent flyers are itching to get back out there. None more so than The Points Whisperer Steve Hui, the founder of iFLYflat. If ever there was a go-to expert in getting bang for your travel buck, it's Steve, and his hopeful, passionate and ambitious outlook is just what business founders need to make it through the challenges of COVID – especially when you're in the travel business. For Steve, ongoing Lockdowns were just another day in the office, after launching iFLYflat off the back off a redundancy during the GFC of 2012. This pivot to a new career was identity defining for Steve, with his ethos as a business founder based on commitment to authenticity and trust. He's had to evolve from an introverted accountant to the media darling he is today – something he never expected as a man who describes himself as “…just a guy doing something that I think is really valuable.” In this episode of Influence Unlocked, Samantha Dybac sits down with Steve to hear about his journey and even squeezes out some travel tips from the expert himself. Frequent flyer points programs can seem complicated and offer little value when it comes to booking flights. However, they are simple to use and could help business owners fly in luxury every time. All it takes is a proper strategy to rack up points from business expenses and turn them into business or first-class seats. In this episode, Steve Hui, known as "The Points Whisperer," teaches us how to take advantage of frequent flyer points and identify the right flights to ensure that every trip we take is at least business class. If you want to learn how to maximize frequent flyer points and always fly in luxury, check these show highlights and tune in to the podcast! Steve's Realizations (1:43) He realized how valuable points were when he got a free $4,000 business class ticket through only points. His accounting and research background helped him figure out how to properly use frequent flyer points. The cost of earning points is less than the price of a ticket, which makes it virtually buying something cheaper. Finding Flights (7:36) First or business class is a better choice than luxurious residence flights. Choose business class during the nighttime flights when you're mostly asleep and first-class during the daytime flights when you're awake. Some destinations do not have first-class, so you have to check your options. 500,000 points garner about 1–2 business flights First Class vs. Business Class (10:39) First-class is on the way out due to most airlines limiting first-class options. It also has a higher staff ratio and better service. First-class has better quality in terms of food and drinks. First-class has about 50% more space than business class. Business-class is similar to first-class and is becoming as good in terms of value. Each airline has their differences when it comes to business and first-class. Flight Upgrading (13:38) Spare seats are either the last available seats the airline can't sell or contingency seats for operational issues. The difference in points for upgrading is about 10%–15%. For upgrade requests, airlines use a ranking system based on loyalty status. Credit Card Strategies (24:34) American Express has the most airline partners, so it is the ideal primary card. Visa or Mastercard should be used when American Express is not available, or there are extra fees. "Free points are better than points that cost money even if the fees are low." Today we are joined on the Australian Aviation podcast bu Steve Hui from iFly Flat. Now you might have a credit card in your wallet or purse that has a frequent flyer program associated with it but do you really know the fine print. Do you understand the ins and outs of redeeming the points and actually using them for flights. Well if you’ve ever amassed enough points to actually qualify for a flight you might find that it is actually quite hard to find one because only so many seats per flight are allocated to frequent flyers. It’s not that you can’t redeem points, you might find it really difficult to find a flight where you can actually use them at the time you want to use them going to the place you want to travel. On top of all of that it is very time consuming to search for the flights and you really do need to know where to look for them. Listen in as Steve shares with us how iFly Flat helps consumers make the most of their frequent flyer points and exactly how they can maximise the opportunities that they present.

Steve Hui, the Points Whisperer, is the owner of I fly flat. We talk about what the tricks are to using points in your business to be able to fly business class. Business owners have a huge advantage when it comes to Frequent Flyer Points. We recently talked about "How to take a holiday as a business owner." I think it is really important to travel, partially to unwind and destress from your business and partially to be inspired and be more creative in the strategy and tactics that you have in your business. If you are going to travel, you might as well travel in style! There are a lot of ways that you can maximise the points that you have available to you, as well as some traps to avoid. One of the big mistakes that we were making was that our main credit card was limited to 3,000 points per month. We applied for a card that was uncapped, which has dramatically increased the number of points that we have been able to accrue. What is the value of a points upgrade and what is the best way to spend them? Have a think about how much you have going through your credit cards. Can you increase that amount? It is really important to make sure that you are paying off your credit cards every month, otherwise those points that you accrue are really expensive. Some credit cards will allow you earn points on government payments, like tax bills. This can dramatically increase the points that you earn. As a business owner, flying Business Class is pretty important because: It allows you to work a lot easier while flying. It allows you to land refreshed after the flight and adjust to the time zone a lot quicker. You deserve it! I have been lucky to fly Qantas business class a few times now and it is a very civilised way to travel and I find I am very productive when relaxing in the nice comfy seat, a glass a whisky and the Laptop set up. There are no distractions from the internet or the phone and I can concentrate on the big strategic questions in our businesses. I was recently able to reach Platinum with Qantas and one of the great advantages is access to Platinum lounges. These are a fantastic experience, a great place to relax and do a little work. Keep an eye out for the best credit cards and the Double Status credits promotions that airlines run. These can make a big difference to the way that you travel. Contact Steve at I Fly Flat for more information on how to fly like a boss! Don't forget to send us a photo of you on holidays if you've used any tips from the podcast to take a holiday!
Many small Restaurants use Credit Cards to pay for a lot of bills. With some really simple changes, you can make a really big difference in the kind of travel that you can take. We talk to Steve Hui from I Fly Flat. This is something that we do a pretty good job of, and I was able to get an upgrade to Business Class last year for our family as we flew from Melbourne to Singapore in December last year. This was an Epic experience flying Business Class with Qantas. Steve discusses a range of tactics that you can use fly in style around the world, just by changing some purchasing habits and maybe just even changing your credit cards. Travel is a really important part of life, I think. Experiencing different places, different cultures. To pick the right card, you want to match it to your suppliers. We talk credit card surcharges and some ways that you can negotiate down the credit card surcharge with some of your suppliers. Not many small business owners are doing this, but it can be a great way to start travelling, or to start travelling in style. We look at a way that you can increase the points that you get from making payments to the government, which can make a really big difference in your points balance. We talk about the experience as a Qantas Gold customer, which gives access to Lounges around the world. Grab a quick shower in between flights and some complimentary food and drinks before your next adventure. The kids loved the upgrade to Qantas Business Class. Important point - make sure that are paying off the credit card balance each month so that you are avoiding the expensive credit card interest. ** Update ** As we having been flying around the world seeing customers and studying Restaurant marketing, I have managed to make Platinum, which give you access to the First Class Lounge. OMG! These are epic. Definitely something to think about. Woo Hoo! ** Our BHAG is to make a meaningful difference in Restaurant Owners lives. Hopefully this will help inspire to start planning towards taking your next holiday. If it does, please send us a photo of you on holidays. We would really appreciate it. He's built a $15M property portfolio of his own, works only a few hours a day, travels the world (for free) often and has pretty much worked out how to work smart, not hard. Plus in episode 409 of your favourite marketing podcast, you'll discover why too much content is not a great idea, more listeners win big in the Monster Prize Draw, and we check in with Tom O'Toole (Australia's favourite baker) who's embarking on one crazy road trip! “If you go out for coffee with someone for an hour, you build a certain relationship. You go and spend four hours playing golf with them, you build an even better relationship and you breakdown a lot of barriers. You go drinking for 10 to 12 hours on my boat and you break down a lot of barriers!” -Chris Gray, Your Empire There's loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about working smarter and not harder, then you'll get this answers in this interview, including: Where did the idea for Your Empire come from? How to network effectively? How to make staff love working for you? How to fly free in the pointy end of the plane? Why and how to make marketing fun? And plenty more ... A little bit more about today's guest Chris Gray started investing in property at the age of 22. He retired from full time work as an accountant at Deloitte at 31. Now 46, Chris has $15m+ of property in his personal portfolio; and runs Your Empire, a buyers agency that builds property portfolios for time-poor professionals, just like he did for himself. Your Empire buys 1-2 properties a week, and spends up to $5m a year on renovations for its clients. Chris also hosts the Smart Investing show on Sky News. He travel overseas 10-15 times a year, and is into car racing, motor yachts and flying choppers. Here's what caught my attention from my chat with Your Empire's Chris Gray: I love Chris's approach to networking where in a room of 100 prospects he'd prefer two deep conversations than 98 shallow ones. Chris is the master seeder … constantly inserting (quite subtley) points about his business into the conversation. I think we all need to get out and smell the roses more often. Get an Amex card! Steve Hui is the leading authority on optimising credit cards for frequent flyer points. Dubbed “The Points Whisperer”, his company I Fly Flat helped his customers spend 125 million points in 2015. Steve was inspired to start the business when he once flew business class and decided that he wanted to do it more often. He realised just what was possible by earning loyalty points on credit cards. He then advised his friends to switch credit cards and cash in on the benefits. When none of them took him up on the advice, he was frustrated enough to create his own company that helps people use points that they don’t know what do with, as well as pointing people in the direction of the right cards that will earn them the most points. They can then look after the entire flight booking process. The highlights of Steve’s story were: ** Starting a business where there is no existing market is worth the risk (he has no competitors) ** Businesses should use their credit cards to pay their suppliers – they can even pay their rent with it ** Using a credit card to pay monthly bills can pay your supplier immediately, but still give you 30+ days of credit ** By spending as little as 60,000 AUD, you can get free business class flights ** He received a great boost from media coverage, but wrongly thought that his company wasn’t interesting enough to be covered in the media. He advises anyone to have a media strategy, whatever their company In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** How to decide which credit cards are best for you ** How many points you will need for certain flights ** Strategies to achieve flight upgrades ** The concept of ‘remarketing’ ** The 95% rule ** The pros and cons of using a marketing agency Resources mentioned in this episode: ** I Fly Flat website (http://www.iflyflat.com.au) ** Facebook (www.facebook.com/businessbrainfood) ** Business Brain Food Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood) ** Twitter (https://twitter.com/bfewtrell) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher) If you are using your credit card for regular purchases, you might well be entitled to significant frequent flyer points. If you are not using your credit card for regular purchases then you should, especially if you are a business! Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that!
