News for the Heart talks with Tom Campbell on Ch-Ch-Changes: Making New Choices! Tom and I delved into the crucial role of embracing change for personal growth. I shared my own experience of eviction, highlighting how even challenging events can be viewed as opportunities. Tom reinforced this by emphasizing that change is an inevitable and vital part of life, preventing stagnation. He pointed out that our attitude towards change significantly shapes our experience, suggesting that a positive mindset can transform adversity into a catalyst for development, referencing inspiring examples like Christopher Reeve. The discussion further explored how maintaining a positive attitude is key when navigating life's inevitable shifts and uncertainties. Tom stressed that change often brings opportunities for learning and growth, regardless of external circumstances. He argued that our choices and outlook, rather than wealth, determine our quality of life. Both Tom and I agree on the importance of remaining open-minded and avoiding negative judgments, as even difficult situations can lead to unexpected positive outcomes and new paths. We concluded by underscoring that embracing change with optimism is essential for personal development and overall well-being.We're getting to the Heart of What Matters!

Hearts & Daggers
Ep. 77: Small Towns (The Whisper Man + Book Lovers)

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2024 36:30

Summary: Get ready to run into that one kid from high school in today's episode - Small Towns! Whether you're like Devin who grew up and still lives in small towns or like Holly who is a big city gal, these spaces are almost always pressure cookers. The intimacy of the community can make any character claustrophobic (especially if a serial killer is lurking) or euphoric with love; the past and the present intermingle in these places and nothing is anonymous, for better or worse.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:29): Holly discussed The Whisper Man by Alex North, a psychological thriller following Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake, after they move to the small town of Featherbank after the tragic death of Tom's wife, Rebecca. Jake, a quiet and sensitive boy, soon begins to exhibit strange behavior - including talking to imaginary friends. When Neil Spencer, a young boy in town, goes missing in a similar way to the M.O. of serial Killer Frank Cater, detectives get involved to stop the madness. Holly's key takeaways were: Characters like detective Pete and Tom are haunted by their pasts, while Jake's odd behavior reflects how trauma can manifest in children. The novel delves into the lasting effects of pain and loss. The strained relationship between Tom and Jake mirrors the generational impact of Tom's own childhood with his abusive father, exploring how parental relationships shape identity and behavior. Featherbank is portrayed as a small, seemingly idyllic town, but one that is haunted by its history with "The Whisper Man" murders. This duality of small towns—where the veneer of safety masks a deeper darkness—creates a rich tension. The town's past crimes are embedded in its collective memory, affecting the attitudes of its residents and shaping the investigation into the new abduction.  Both Tom and Jake feel isolated in their own ways, but the story emphasizes the importance of connection and understanding in overcoming fear and loneliness. The father and son also grapple with their grief over Rebecca's death; their loneliness highlights the ways people cope with loss and how relationships can be rebuilt after tragedy. The Heart (15:24): Devin discussed Book Lovers by Emily Henry, a romance following NYC literary agent Nora Stephens as she and her sister Libby take a sabbatical to the tiny town of Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. Once there, Nora runs into her arch-nemesis and brooding book editor  Charlie Lastra, who grew up in the town. Thrown together for a few weeks, the two decide to put aside their differences and work to make a well-known author's manuscript into a publishable book. But can their enmity last when they both clearly love books and this idyllic town so much? Devin's key takeaways were: The setting of Sunshine Falls is as Hallmark-y as the name would convey. The are friendly locals, quirky businesses, and a slower pace of life that contrasts directly with the New York lifestyles that Nora and Charlie are accustomed to now. The town also holds personal significance for Charlie; he grew up there. Nora is a literary agent and Charlie an editor, which not only gives them a ton in common but is grounds for their enmity. In Sunshine Falls, the Goode Books Store is a focal point, representing the literary charm of the town and serves as the backdrop for many scenes.  While it was a manuscript that made them dislike each other, it's another one that brings them together. Nora first met Charlie when pitching the blunt editor a manuscript she felt passionate about; he rebuffs her and criticizes the work. They both have their heels dug in that the other is wrong and has no taste, but as they collaborate on Dusty Fielding's latest work, they begin to bond. Hot On the Shelf (27:36): Devin: Puck & Prejudice by Lia Riley Holly: Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley What's Making Our Hearts Race (31:15): Devin: the final season of What We Do in the Shadows Holly: the Wicked movie   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

On Tuesday 9 July, the Free Speech Union was honoured to bring together an expert panel that included whistleblowers Sue Evans and Dr David Bell from the Tavistock Clinic, who risked their careers and much more to pursue the truth. As anticipated, the evening was a unique opportunity for us to learn the core free expression lesson from the Cass Report and the Tavistock scandal: that open inquiry and freedom of speech are essential to protecting us from pernicious ideas. Both Tom and Ben were fortunate enough to attend in person and much of today's episode is spent pondering the thoughts and threads that resonated with them most strongly. We also discuss a London council's attempt to label a Bloomsbury monument of Virginia Woolf with a digital tag that highlights her alleged ‘imperialist attitudes'. The story was reported in the Mail and it is heartening to witness Emma Woolf robustly defending her great aunt on Twitter/X: ‘You couldn't make it up. The wokerati of Camden Council have decided that this statue of my great-aunt Virginia Woolf in Bloomsbury needs a QR code to explain her 'offensive' attitudes. Just to be clear, this was a woman born in 1882. Are they expecting her to trot out the Wokery of 2024? Virginia was a feminist, socially progressive, a literary pioneer, politically active (Fabian Society etc), she was way ahead of her time in so many ways' .  ‘That's Debatable!'  is edited by Jason Clift.

Well, we are coming towards the end of an absolutely action-packed month of pro racing, which can mean only one thing; it's time for another Race Communiqué! As you all know by now, this is my chance to dive back into the pro peloton with current Jayco-Alula rider, and former teammate, Luke Durbridge and my former DS (and even teammate - way, way back in the day!) EF Education - Easypost D.S. Tom Southam.  Both Tom and Luke have just arrived back from the Ardennes where they each had their own take to share about their experiences there. Luke can tell us what is like to race one of the most epic Flèche Walloons in recent history in freezing snow and ice, and Tom can tell us all about his struggles to get the heating just right while he was sat back in the comfort of the team car! In all seriousness, it was a crazy week of racing to wrap up the Classics and we had a great chat about the experiences at the Ardennes whilst wrapping up what we saw earlier in the month at the Cobbled Classics.  As well as the racing chat we have our usual segments, with Luke putting his theory on the table that the days of the old-school feed zones are over for good, and Tom gives us a rare glimpse at one of the most important parts of some real race communiques: UCI fines, who is getting what and why - you may be surprised to hear what goes on back there!  With the Giro only a few weeks away we also took some time to preview the upcoming action in Italy, as well as start to get ourselves ready for the Escape Collective's Fantasy Competition, which we will all be taking part in next month in the special Life in the Peloton league which you can of course join and take all three of us on whilst the race is going.  Catching up with these guys is always so much fun, and even though I don't miss the stress of getting rain jackets or feedbags in the races, I do I love hearing the insight as to how the peloton keeps evolving.  Sit back, relax and enjoy.  Cheers,  Mitch

In episode 56, Kathryn and Theresa talk to Tom Chester and Justin Johnson, music educators and ensemble directors from Illinois. The discussion revolves around the concept of student-centered learning in the realm of music education. Both Tom and Justin emphasize the importance of equipping students with the tools to think critically and independently about music. They highlight the pitfalls of traditional teaching methods that often prioritize performance preparation over genuine musical understanding. By drawing parallels to other academic subjects and real-life scenarios, they advocate for a teaching approach that empowers students to make informed decisions about musicality, expression, and technique. The conversation underscores the value of fostering a lifelong appreciation and understanding of music beyond the confines of the classroom or a specific performance. Tom and Chunga are feeling nostalgic!  Recently, Tom was trying to explain to his daughters that music used to be fairly diffucult to get your hands on.  It took effort and commitment to find certain albums or CD's!  Now days, getting music, now matter how new or old is a very easy thing to do thanks to an open source offering called Napster!  Both Tom and Chunga were huge fans of this decentralized, distributed file sharing platform. Although it was extremely popular, the very things that made it successful, also brought about it's eventual downfall.  In this episode of The Hacks, Tom and Chunga talk about the seeds of chaos that were planted by the Napster business model and how it changed virtually everything we do in todays world!  They also talk about if other decentralized, distributed computing platforms are doomed to suffer the same fate!

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we (Ryan and Tom) tackled three topics. We started with a discussion of Trump's recent civil lawsuit by E. Jean Carroll, which ended with a verdict against him suggesting the jury was convinced that Trump sexually assaulted (i.e., raped) Ms. Carroll. Ryan was wondering how it is that people can support a rapist as President of the US, and Tom responded that it was less about Trump and more about the American populace - they want a win and will take it at any cost, regardless of the (im)morality of their candidate. We then turned to a discussion of the recent congressional hearing that featured three FBI agents who had lost their security clearance and then claimed whistleblower status and argued that the FBI was attacking conservatives. Tom is concerned about the FBI restricting free speech and engaging as the thought police. Ryan noted that one of these individuals was actually at the January 6th riot (not acting as a representative of the FBI but among the protestors/rioters) and the other two continue to espouse conspiracy theories about the January 6th riot that do not align with all of the evidence. We did agree that: (a) military, law enforcement, and FBI members on the ground are likely to lean to the right, and (b) internal elements of the US government are a bigger threat to democracy than are protests and militias. Finally, we turned to the debt ceiling issue that is roiling America at the moment. Tom noted that the government has to pay its debts - it is legally required to do so. If we don't raise the debt ceiling, we effectively would force a balanced budget and would have to cut spending in other areas. Both Tom and Ryan agreed that the US government needs to stop spending more than it brings in and that our national debt is going to cause major problems moving forward.

On This Walk

Today's episode is truly unique, as we have not one, but two special guests to accompany us on this walk. The topic of discussion is sensitive and personal. Today, we talk about sexual abuse and its effects on mental health in men; a path both of these men have experienced and are now standing strong to support others. We talk about fighting the monster within, the role of radical acceptance, how we create new commitments, and key pivot points in each of our journeys.  Both Tom and Reggie accompany me on this walk and together, we turn towards our hurts, our pain, and our mental health, as men. In This Episode (07:46) – Tom's transition into a speaker and a coach. (09:22) – Fighting the monster they were initially running from. (19:10) – The importance of having compassion for yourself.   (26:30) – Unlock your self compassion with Equal Empathy Meditation. (27:16) – Taking that step to radical acceptance. (37:22) – Rebalancing yourselves in your masculine through healing. (44:22) – Saying “enough!” to create new commitments. (48:30) – Cultivating the gift of curiosity. (1:01:40) – Always remember: Pain is sacred. (1:07:10) – Reggie on helping athletes get through stressful times. Notable Quotes “As I grew older, and I grew the capabilities to help myself, I no longer needed that gremlin. But that gremlin was always there holding me back. Then when I got to the point where I had to talk directly to myself and who I was, I realized that I was not a monster. The feeling was compassion. There was so much compassion that came over me that, ‘why am I being so hard on this guy', because he is a beautiful human being. Like any of us, we are harder on ourselves than we are on anyone else. I was so hard on myself that when I got the opportunity to love who I was, having that compassion was so beautiful. It was a big hug that I gave myself and I still do to this day, when there are times when they are challenging. I realize I am not that person I think I am right now. So it was compassion that overwhelmed everything when I allowed that to happen.” Tom (15:37) “Listening is huge. Making sure that they know that I am available. As an athlete, even when it came to my own parents, when you are going through this experience, very few people understand how you really feel; how it actually is, because they have never actually done it themselves. They can study it. You can look at it in a book or look at it on TV but you are never going to understand the feeling that someone like me would have that justified. The background that came from; why I am doing this. Why I am finding enjoyment out of this. One thing I have that I feel saved me going through this experience, even going through all the abuse, was I had a system for solving problems. I came into an environment and I studied the environment first and the people. I had a way of going about things that ensured my success.” Reggie (1:07:18) Our Guests Tom Kress is a public speaker, certified life coach with a mission to guide people to live a powerful life. As a survivor, he has spoken to over 400 schools and thousands of students on sexual abuse, awareness and prevention. To date, Tom has empowered 180 students to come forward about their abuse. Reggie Walker has been on the show before. He is the creator of the Personal Mastery school, a program built to help anyone find answers to what is their purpose or plan in life. Reggie suffered sexual abuse when he was young, which affected him all the way to the NFL. He is a TEDx speaker, public speaker, consultant, and problem solver for businesses. In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we tackle two topics. First up is "How is it acceptable for a pathological liar like Republican George Santos to retain his House seat?" Both Tom and Nate agree that politicians aren't known for their honesty. George Santos differs in degree, not in kind, from other politicians. They also agree that this boils down to entrenched political power; Republicans cannot afford to remove him from office as he is key to helping them hold their slim majority. The second topic is, "How is it problematic for the Biden administration to agree to send modern tanks to Ukraine?" Nate and Tom agree that the military-industrial complex in the US, in some ways, drives our foreign policy. The US is basically the world's police force and that is tied to our military spending and military superiority. Both agree that isn't a great look for the US and would like to see the US less involved in wars.

Podcasting: Too Diverse To Fail?

The next few months are looking pretty rough for podcasting. And just about every other industry. Historically, podcasting has proven itself to be rather resilient. But there are lean times ahead. Are you prepared?  #podcasting Photo by https://www.pexels.com/photo/person-holding-pink-suede-long-waller-910122/ (Robert Bogdan from Pexels) Everything just looks... bad right now. War in Europe. A down market. High inflation. Personal liberties revoked. Even crypto is tanking. So to ask the question outright: can podcasting survive the coming storm?  Yes. But not because it's too big to fail. Because podcasting is too diverse to fail. First, some good news: I'm stoked to welcome https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomwebster/ (Tom Webster) to the https://soundsprofitable.com/ (Sounds Profitable) team. Both Tom and http://linkedin.com/in/bryanbarletta (Bryan) share in my commitment to make podcasting better, and you're going to love what we're cooking up. OK. Back to the bad news: I don't know a single serious podcaster who isn't looking at the world around them and wondering just how their world will change in the coming months. Me included. But I'm convinced that podcasting will survive simply because I don't see podcasting, or even podcasters, as a monolithic group. But that doesn't mean all podcasters will survive. Candidly, I think "big podcasting" will face the brunt of the onslaught, with casualties expected.  Faced with financial pressures, businesses start cutting costs. And one of the first line items to be cut is always advertising and marketing. And podcasting is often under that umbrella.  If you're getting paid to run ads on your show, you may see some of your advertisers pull back. So start having conversations with those advertisers now or your agency rep now. And be ready to be flexible and creative. If you're pursuing paid campaigns for the growth of your show, start talking to the other shows, sites, and services you advertise on to see what their plans are. And watch your performance metrics! If people or companies pay you to podcast on their behalf, start talking to your clients and help assuage their fears. And if you get the impression their commitment is wavering...at least you know ahead of time, right? If you work for a company in the business of podcasting, start talking to your bosses. Don't expect the CFO to lay everything out on the table for you, but it never hurts to ask. Gently, though. None of us know how this is going to play out. But it will play out, one way or another. Keep your eyes open. Plan for the worst but hope for the best. The coming recession won't kill podcasting, and I hope you, your show, or your services make it through to the other side. ----- Sponsored by: https://evoterra.link/captivate (Captivate.fm, the world's only growth-oriented podcast hosting company) ----- Links ----- https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomwebster/ (Tom Webster) https://soundsprofitable.com/ (Sounds Profitable) http://linkedin.com/in/bryanbarletta (Bryan Barletta) Got a podcasting service? https://podcastpontifications.com/about/sponsorship-information (Become a sponsor of Podcast Pontifications).
