As a 22-year-old, after backpacking around the world, Bruce Poon Tip, founder of tour operator G Adventures and the current chairman of G Travel Community, basically invented a new type of travel product that emphasized more local experiences and interactions, and sought a deeper connection with destinations and the people who live there. Over the years, G Adventures has become a leader in this kind of travel all over the world. The company's brands have won numerous awards — including several TravelAge West WAVE awards. Tip himself has emerged as a strong voice for responsible travel, writing books, speaking around the world — including at the United Nations — and recently producing “The Last Tourist,” a feature film. In this episode, Tip returns to Humans of Travel to talk about his view of the travel industry today. (He was previously on the podcast in April 2020 talking about his background and the early days of his company.) Now, Tip shares his take on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed the travel industry and what it taught him personally, as well as how he sees the state of responsible travel and community engagement today. Tip also discusses how he sees G Adventures evolving to continue to be a leader in the industry. Throughout the episode, listeners will hear Tip share his insights on what travel advisors can do to improve their business and build better relationships with their customers. As one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the travel industry, Tip has very straightforward thoughts on how agents can achieve their goals. It's a conversation with one of the true visionaries in travel, and you won't want to miss it. Know a great Human of Travel who has a compelling story to share? It's been five years since "Crazy Rich Asians" featuring an all-Asian cast broke global box office records. Its debut kicked off the so-called "Asian August" in 2018, with the release of films like Netflix's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" highlighting the work of Asian American and Asian artists, and with that a promise of more opportunities. Now, the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" is breaking records, and thrusting veteran and new Asian actors into a rarified spotlight. Is this the long hoped-for payoff? GUESTS Jenny Korn, founder and coordinator of the Race, Tech, and Media Working Group at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. Elena Creef, professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Wellesley College. She specializes in Asian American visual history in photography, film and pop culture.

In this episode, I speak with Ananya Sinha, the founder of Brown Baddies, an NFT project focused on elevating South Asian women. Ananya was born in New Zealand, grew up in Australia, and is now telling the stories of South Asian women all over the world via NFTs. Ananya is relatively new to web3, but has been an entrepreneur since her uni days at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Ananya spent her pandemic years working as a consultant at Publicis Sapient, and in March, she turned investor with Artesian. Brown Baddies has been Ananya's side hustle NFT project since the beginning of 2022. I actually found out about them through an Instagram post, and as a South Asian woman, I was thrilled to finally see an NFT project that I could relate to. I couldn't help but reach out to Ananya to have her on the the Green Room podcast. Brown Baddies isn't just minting NFTs - proceeds are going to important iniatives like supporing NGOs working to combat gender-based violence in South Asia and creating a global directory of South Asian women-owned businesses. You can learn more about them by visting brownbaddies.xyz and following @BrownBaddiesNFT on Twitter.

Today, Tayo is joined by Shiv Reddy, a phenomenal cultural commentator, photographer, and an advocate for visual and cultural representation. She's been taking photos for the past decade, but most of her current projects are commissioned for South Asian weddings and family portraits. Photography first enthralled her because it allowed her to enter a space that wasn't intended for her. Given that South Asian individuals are rarely portrayed in Western media, as a photographer, Reddy aims to make each of her clients feel like the main character. Shiv's passion for representation transcends photography, though. She's taken to social media to engage with others about diversity in pop culture, and has become rather popular herself in doing so. She goes on to discuss the difference between visual representation and cultural representation in media and why we should always try to achieve the latter. In the media, minority stereotypes and relevant discriminatory undertones are unfortunately still prevalent, so she hopes that her social media creates a safe space for individuals to have discussions, feel seen, and be heard. Online, she often talks about pop culture phenomena and the unique experience of feeling ashamed of your own culture for fear of judgment from those around you. Shiv and Tayo draw this episode to a close by discussing Shiv's media future, in which she's ‘taking it one day at a time'. The Finer Details of This Episode: How Shiv started her photography careerWhat it's like entering a space not designed for youThe importance of making clients feel like the main characterBridgerton's inclusivityThe journey from visual representation to cultural representationIndia's wide range of diversityAssimilating to American cultureShiv's future in pop culture Links: Shiv's TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdbHGUYY/ Shiv's Instagram: https://instagram.com/shivalry_incConnect with Tayo Rockson and the As Told By Nomads Podcast on:Personal Website: https://tayorockson.comUYD Management: https://uydmanagement.com/UYD Collective: https://tayorockson.com/uyd-collectiveLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tayorockson Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/TayoRockson See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
