“Uniformity is a two-edged sword, isn't it? Within a choir you need uniformity or you're not going to get a good blend, but within that uniformity, I want as much individuality as possible. I do a lot of 16th-Century music, early 17th-Century music, which has very, very high, passionate stakes. The individual has to come through. That's what makes it interesting.”Robert Hollingworth was a chorister at Hereford Cathedral, set up his first solo-voice ensemble at the age of 16 and read music at New College, Oxford, followed by a year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In place of a conventional academic career he has spent 40 years directing vocal groups, notably I Fagiolini, which he founded at university in 1986. Nearly 30 CDs and DVDs have included first recordings of works and collections by Byrd, Croce, Tomkins, Andrea Gabrieli and more. Recent releases include the multi-award winning Striggio 40-part mass, 'Amuse-Bouche' (French 20th century music including premiers of Francaix and Milhaud), and in 2017 'Monteverdi - The Other Vespers' which also featured the University of York's music department's choir, The 24. Winning the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble Award, Gramophone Awards and the Diapason D'Or de l'Annee, the group is 'In Association' at the University of York Music Department where, as well as teaching Undergraduate projects, Robert runs the MA in solo-voice ensemble singing.As a freelancer conductor, Robert has directed the English Concert, Academy of Ancient Music and the BBC Concert Orchestra; among European choirs, Accentus (France), NDR Chor and RIAS Kammerchor (Germany), National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Voces8, BBC Singers and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. The Best of Clare awards, In Association with Ei Electronics, will be taking place tonight at the Old Ground Hotel. One of the many great awards on offer is for Local Hero. This year's Local Hero is Fr. Harry Bohan. Harry has achieved so much in his life. He qualified as a sociologist in 1966 which cemented his life-long commitment to the development of Irish society and rural society. A campaigner for Rural Ireland, Harry established the Rural Resource Centre, and in 1998 he set up the Ceilfin Centre. One of the county's best-known clerics, last year saw Harry celebrate his Diamond Jubilee in the priesthood, as he has spent over 60 years ministering as a priest in the diocese of Killaloe and in the parish of Sixmilebridge, Kilmurry. Harry also brought great success to Clare hurling, managing the Banner's senior hurlers to back-to-back league success in the late ‘70s. On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke with Fr Harry Bohan to ask him what it felt like to win the Local Hero award.

The new book The Warped Side of Our Universe is the result of the collaboration of Nobel Laureate Kip Thorne and award-winning artist Lia Halloran. It's a challenge to make the best decisions in a world that is unpredictable and full of contradictions. Join us for a discussion with journalist Katie Hafner, who covers scientific advances, especially those by women, and her husband, Dr. Robert Wachter of UCSF, who is on the forefront of the digital transformation of health care and has been influential in advancing public understanding of the COVID crisis. Dr. Wachter coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and has overseen that medical specialty, the fastest growing specialty in modern medical history. His tweets on COVID-19 have been a trusted source of information on the clinical, public health, and policy issues surrounding the pandemic, garnering more than 500 million views. Hafner and Wachter are at the center of advancing public understanding of science and health care through various media. We will discuss Hafner's popular "Lost Women of Science" podcast, her groundbreaking nonfiction books, and her recent switch to fiction with The Boys. We'll also discuss Dr. Wachter's perspective on COVID—including lessons learned—as we enter a new phase of the pandemic, how health care will be transformed by digital tools like ChatGPT, and how to communicate about science in the face of uncertainty, political polarization, and misinformation. Two eclipses of the sun are coming to North America during the 2023–24 school year—an annular (“ring of fire”) eclipse on October 14, 2023 and a total eclipse on April 8, 2024. People in two narrow paths will have the full eclipse experience each time. Everyone else (an estimated 500 million people, including all of us in the Bay Area) will see a nice partial eclipse, where the moon covers a good part of the sun.
