Dr. Ulrich earned his Associate of Arts degree from Iowa Central before pursing his Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista University. He continued his education at Iowa State University (ISU) and obtained his Master's of Education Degree in Educational Leadership. He then earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at ISU. Additionally, Dr. Ulrich holds a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Administration (Superintendent Licensure) from Iowa State University. Dr. Ulrich has served as Superintendent of Schools for Fort Dodge, AHSTW (Avoca, IA), and Graettinger-Terril Community School Districts. His collaborative and relational leadership, along with his consensus-building skills, were the catalyst to leading over $20 million dollars of capital projects and three successful public referendums. Thriving on innovation and a drive to elevate student academic excellence, Dr. Ulrich leveraged his ability to instill trust and worked with stakeholders and the Fort Dodge School Board to implement a grade realignment to improve the systematic approach to teaching and learning. Through effective consensus building, communication and building a community coalition of support, he led the AHSTW district in developing a long-range facility plan to meet the growing population of students within the district as well as leading the districts through a whole-grade sharing agreement. Prior to his Superintendent roles, he served as Principal at Graettinger-Terril Community School District from July 2009 through June 2013. At Dallas Center-Grimes he held the positions of Student Services Coordinator, 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher, and High School Social Science Teacher. Since August 2019, he has been an adjunct instructor at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA. Dr. Ulrich inspires his passion for teaching, learning, and leadership into his students. Being an instructor at a higher education institution provides him perspective on how decisions impact the classroom and to effectively educate students. Passionate about community involvement, Dr. Ulrich is a member of Rotary International Club and a Board of Director for the NAACP in Fort Dodge. Dr. Ulrich also serves on Advisory Boards for both Buena Vista University and Iowa State University to provide feedback on the preparedness of their future teachers. His work with the School Administrators of Iowa has been extensive including currently serving as a member of the Legislative Advocacy Committee, serving on their Executive Committee from 2016-2018, and serving as the District 3 President in 2011. Dr. Ulrich was selected for and recently completed the Iowa Association of Business and Industry's yearlong Leadership Iowa program and currently sits on the Statewide Advisory Board for SBDC.

Sunday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 72.Education savings accounts a ‘catalyst' for new private schools, according to an administrator It's likely more private schools will be opening in Iowa in the coming years, a private school administrator said Friday.The education savings accounts program passed by Republican lawmakers and Gov. Kim Reynolds this year created an opportunity for new private schools to start up across the state, Josh Bowar, the head of Sioux Center Christian School and the interim outreach coordinator for the Iowa Association of Christian Schools, said during the taping of this weekend's episode of “Iowa Press” on Iowa PBS.He said his organization has been in touch with at least 20 groups who are looking to open new Christian schools in the coming years because education savings accounts — valued at $7,600 per student for the coming school year — have increased the potential for the schools to attract students.More than 18,000 Iowa students were approved for the coming school year for the savings accounts to attend private school. About 60 percent of those students already attend private school, while about 40 percent are coming from public schools.Cedar Rapids man sentenced for role in Jan. 6 insurrectionA Cedar Rapids man was sentenced Friday to 30 months in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.Leo Christopher Kelly, 37, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on seven offenses, including obstruction of an official proceeding, a felony, and six misdemeanors.According to court documents and evidence presented during Kelly's May trial, Kelly was one of the few rioters who breached the Senate Chamber. While there, Kelly ascended the Senate Dais, leafed through sensitive documents and took photos of them, the DOJ reported.Judge Royce C. Lamberth sentenced Kelly to 30 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release. Kelly must pay $7,000 in restitution and fines.In the 31 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,100 people have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.Marion traffic cameras now working at 2 intersections Traffic cameras at two intersections in Marion have been installed and officially went live Friday for a 30-day warning period, according to a news release from the city of Marion.The cameras are at the intersection of Highway 100 and East Post Road and the intersection of Highways 13 and 151.The original goal was to have them up and running by July 1, but the city hit a delay with permitting on signage for the cameras, according to the police department.Drivers caught on camera going more than 11 mph over the speed limit or running a red light will receive a warning in the mail for the first 30 days the cameras are live.After that, violations will result in a citation mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.Have a good weekend, everyone.

On this week's episode, Jeff speaks with Director of Professional Development at the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, Dr. Kari Vogelgesang. Dr. Kari Vogelgesang is a Clinical Associate Professor of Elementary Education. She also serves as the Director of Professional Development for the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health and the Baker Teacher Leader Center. Dr. Vogelgesang began her career in education as an elementary classroom teacher. In 2015 she graduated from the University of Iowa with her Ph.D. in special education and her area of focus in social, emotional, and behavioral disorders in school-aged children. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in social, emotional, and behavioral interventions for the classroom teacher; characteristics of disabilities; individuals with exceptional needs; and introduction to IEP's, professional practice, and educational technology. Over the last 10 years, Dr. Vogelgesang has focused much of her work on partnering with school districts across the country to develop evidence-based, meaningful, and accessible teacher professional development opportunities. Some of this work has been highlighted through professional organizations such as the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Education Association, and the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Dr. Vogelgesang has also been a member of numerous research projects focusing on best practice teacher professional development implementation, and evidence-based social, emotional, behavioral interventions for students with challenging behaviors. Publications of this research can be found in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at national and international professional organization conferences.
