Hello and welcome back to another Review Discussion, a feature we're hoping to do much more of in the future! For the uninitiated, a couple of our Irrational Passions hosts and folks sit down and review a game together, either by interview-style or by discussing their time with it! This time I, Alex O'Neill, am joined by the wonderful Quin Hoffman as he picks my brain on DrinkBox's new title: Nobody Saves the World! Music Featured from Nobody Saves the World OST, available here. Opening - Grand Castle, by Jim Guthrie Closing - Empty Eyes, by Jim Guthrie Alex's Reviewer Notes: I just had a blast playing Nobody Saves the World. It's a little too long to just be a "weekend game" by average indie standards, and I had no qualms with that. It's on GamePass, so I think it's in that huge camp of a "no brainer" to just try, but I also think NStW is worth that time too. It's fun, and it layers this very simple systems of unlocking new powers and characters on top of each other that just inevitably leads to some very overpowered characters. But the journey to get there has parts adventure, parts dungeon crawl, and they're both super fun to engage with. I'd often find myself trying to do one more run just to try and unlock a new ability or level up another character. It's fun, it just the right amount of complex, and it's just not super serious, which is a nice departure for me right now. If you're craving something simple and grindy but also fun and layered, this is your game.

Part of creating The Max Frequency Podcast was to restore all the episodes of Behind the Pixel, an interview show I did in 2017 for seven episodes. These will be mixed into this feed so that the show can live on podcast services once more. Below are the original show notes, with some light editing. You can check out the original posts here. I hope you enjoy. In this episode of Behind the Pixel, I figure out who the heck Alex O'Neill really is. Ever since he replaced me on Millennial Gaming Speak the weekend I got engaged, I've heard rumblings of a fly guy that podcasts for hours on end, knows Greg Miller, and has some thought-provoking things to say about video games. Brendan Leonard, Part 2 - On Running, Creating, & Other Irrational Passions

Mountain & Prairie Podcast

Brendan Leonard is a prolific writer and artist who is best known as the creator of Semi-Rad.com. He’s also the author of a brand new book titled “I Hate Running and You Can Too: How to Get Started, Keep Going, and Make Sense of an Irrational Passion.” The book offers motivation and witty insights into the sometimes-crazy pastime of running. And Brendan knows a thing or two about running irrational distances-- he’s completed multiple 100-mile ultramarathons, ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks, directed the film How to Run 100 Miles, and co-hosts the Off The Couch Podcast, which features interviews with runners of all stripes. - Through his books, filmmaking, and writing on Semi-Rad.com, Brendan offers a unique perspective into the world of outdoor recreation and adventure. Rather than focusing on the mind-blowing feats of super-elite athletes, Brendan’s work highlights the passion and determination of regular people who enjoy pushing themselves hard in the outdoors. Brendan has also perfected the ability to draw larger life lessons from these outdoor adventures-- lessons that can be applied to creative endeavors of any kind. You don’t have to be a runner or mountain athlete to glean actionable wisdom from Brendan’s work, and I personally credit Brendan’s influence with helping me to grow and evolve Mountain & Prairie. - Brendan and I connected a few days before the release of his new book and had a fun and wide-ranging conversation about everything from running to reading, from Ted Lasso to Matthew McCountahey. We started out by discussing his new book I Hate Running and You Can Too-- how the book came to be, the process of writing it, and how its lessons can be applied to writing or other creative pursuits. We then discussed some of his own running achievements, including running 52 marathons over the course of 52 weeks and the life lessons he learned from that year-long commitment. We talked about the fallacy of looking for hacks in running or life, some of Brendan’s creative heroes, the importance of vulnerability, the process of finding his creative voice, recent good books, and much more. - If you’re the type of person who likes to push yourself creatively or physically, this episode is full of wisdom and insight that you can put to use immediately. I’d also encourage you to check out Brendan’s new book, and really all of his work-- check out the links in the episode notes or just head to Semi-Rad.com.  Huge thanks to Brendan, and I hope you enjoy. --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 6:00 – Brendan discusses his latest book, I Hate Running and You Can Too 10:00 – Brendan discusses his progression as a runner 18:15 – Brendan talks about his experience running 52 marathons in 52 weeks 27:00 – The lessons Brendan learned from 52 marathon challenge 33:00 – Brendan explains how becoming a runner influenced other areas of his life 36:30 – Brendan discusses his claim that “there are no hacks” in running (or life) 42:00 – Who Brendan looks up to 50:30 – Brendan explores the process of finding his voice 55:30 – Brendan discusses vulnerability and the process of sharing his own experiences in his writing 1:02:30 – Brendan’s book recommendations 1:07:30 – Brendan’s parting words of wisdom --- Semi-Rad.com "I Hate Running and You Can Too" by Brendan Leonard "How to Run 100 Miles" All of Brendan's Books Brendan's first M&P episode --- SPECIAL OFFER for Mountain & Prairie listeners: Freeflow Institute is a Montana-based organization that builds opportunities for creativity, space, and access to wild places for writers, artists, and leaders of all backgrounds. Freeflow eliminates the barrier between you, your ideas, and your environment by bringing emerging and established writers, leaders, artists, and communicators together into wild landscapes. It's time for another Review Discussion, this time on Moon Studios' follow up to a beloved Metroidvania, Ori & The Will of the Wisps.Editor Quinten Hoffman sits down with Alex O'Neill to discuss what Will of the Wisps has changed, evolved, where combat goes, how it sounds, and the beauty of 2D movement. Alex also mentions the patch situation on console. Alex's Thoughts: Here's the deal: from top to bottom, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a huge Metroidvania in a way I've only ever seen before in Hollow Knight. Maybe not that insane in the side quests or secret challenges, Ori instead builds on the heart and soul of Blind Forest, and perfects 2D movement. I think this might be the best and most fluid platformer I've ever played. I'm not positive, but the incredible feeling I had when soaring through the environment by the end of Will of the Wisps was tantamount to magic. The best thing I can say, that aptly sums up how I, as a long time Metroid fan, feel coming off of finishing Will of the Wisps, is this feels like playing Super Metroid for the first time again. It builds on, evolves, and near-perfects ideas that are fundamental to the genre and contemporaries this evokes. And much like Super Metroid, after finishing this game and seeing it's entirety, it's hard to fathom how you could go up from here. There are pretty noticeable performance issues on console right now, and I played it on an Xbox One X with a code provided by Microsoft, but I haven't played enough since a patch released to say with any finality.Ori is very good. Follow us! The editors of Irrational Passions once again descend on Boston for Pax East! This time around the editors chose to highlight or have a deeper dive into a particular game they felt spoke to them after having played it on the show floor! In this Discussion Editor At Large Jarrett Green chats with Professor RPG Scott White about Yacht Clubs Games upcoming Shovel Knight Dig! Scott's Thoughts: Going into Shovel Knight Dig, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I mean, I had watched the trailers so I had a basic understanding of the changes, but it was still a bit nebulous to me. Stepping away from the demo kiosk, I came away much more excited and with a much clearer picture of the game.Dig maintains the distinct responsiveness and tight controls that the Shovel Knight, while also feeling brand new. Shifting to a downward progression, the movement down the tunnels felt good, with plenty of traps and hazards that did a good job replicating the dangers in the side-scrolling games. I absolutely love the new 16-bit art style, and the new Spore Knight enemy from the Hexcavators fits great into the established vibe of the world.Jarrett: Yacht Club Games are some incredibly smart and versatile devs. Not only have they turned Shovel Knight into the indie game Mickey Mouse, they've made Shovel Knight a brand that is ubiquitous throughout the industry.  Part of that is developing a sort of design language and style guide that brings a sort of signature game feel to where ever the azure hero goes. He's been in hack and slashes, metrovanias, fighting games, card games, and will now a maze digging game that makes me beg the question, "can Shovel Knight do literally anything?"Shovel Knight Dig is an adventurous take on the arcade driller game that will strike a cord with fans of the niche genre, and curious first timers alike. Yacht Club has become well known for knowing how to spice up old formulas to make tried and true genres feel new again. As much as it is Dig Dug and Pac-Man, its also Downwell and Steamworld Dig. It has a sense of exploration, while also fiercely compelling you to dig yourself to the bottom as fast as you can. My time with it was too short on the PAX floor, and I really can wait to really bury myself in it whenever it finally drops.
