OpGCD Live! 61 - An Occult and/or Esoteric Review of "Next" (Nic Cage Wizardry meets Philip K Dick)
The Film School Janitors are back in school, and they're going to Nic Cage University! Their goal is to watch and review every film Nicolas Cage has ever made... and will ever make! This week's assignment: GUNSLINGERS In the future years of 2085, people don't shoot guns anymore - they throw them at each in a sport called "Gunslinging"... Kidding! This is another Nic Cage western about a town of outlaws battling bounty hunters. Listen to find out if that makes it better or worse than the sci-fi idea!
Hop on into the murder hole but don't forget your slo-mo and plastic sheeting. We're talking good ol' boys and the importance of brothers of all types. So of course we brought Producer Peter's brother, Phillip on for a dive into 2017's Arsenal. It's the return of Nic Cage's weirdly favorite (?) character: Eddie King. Now with more nose and less accent! This is Cage Match.Intro music by: Bill Panks
Let's ride. It's time for our annual Nicolas Cage movie bracket – but this time: we're going head to head. Instead of simply pitting movies against each other, this year each participant will pit their team against another in a best 2 of 3 contest.Prepare for rivalries, heartbreak, and plenty of Cage. Up first: drafting and ranking our teams. Our featured guests:Carly Hayward, Erin Sheehan, & Jon WaughYou can shoot us an email at whatisamoviepod@gmail.com

Nic Cage stashes his bags in the overhead bin and settles in for his second round of IHSN punch-ups. This was a really fun one as we got to play with a long manifest of colourful characters in a brainless action setting. Steve Buscemi in particular gets an elevated roll in our reimagined pitch. Send a textLock and load, dear listeners—because this week on Entertain This!, we're storming Alcatraz one meticulously explosive frame at a time. Join the crew as we embed with Nicolas Cage's sweat-drenched biochemist, Sean Connery's improbably dapper ex-SAS escape artist, and Ed Harris's honor-bound general who decided the Geneva Convention was more of a suggestion. From the Fairmont heist that launched a thousand car chases to the shower-room showdown that still makes us flinch, no bullet casing, no VX vial, and no hairpiece goes unexamined. Expect rapid-fire banter sharper than a SEAL's KA-BAR, plot-hole forensics that would impress the FBI, and enough ‘90s Michael Bay pyrotechnics to trigger every smoke alarm in your vicinity. This week Brian and Steve discover the period imperfect adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novella The Whisperer in Darkness. Produced by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and presented in Mythoscope. Full of clever production to invoke the spirit of 1930s Golden Age Cinema. The story is a mostly faithful telling of an academic investigating the strange goings on in rural New England. Then again, what Lovecraft story isn't about that? With just a few days to go until Christmas, it's time for another movie set on the big day. Not-so-jolly ol' (not a saint) Nic Cage plays an ordinary and restrained regular guy in The Family Man while Tea Leoni is at her most likable and charming as his wife. After splitting up in college, Mister Successful gets a glimpse of what their life COULD have been. The controversial frat-boy Brett Ratner directed a dramedy that's going for a vibe similar to It's A Wonderful Life, including the main character's distaste for his lot in life (in the "Glimpse-verse", at least)…but also giving us a touching ending. So choose us by choosing to listen to the 703rd episode of Have You Ever Seen. And Merry Holidays-mas, one and all! Hiya, dear listener! A quick disclaimer for this week: We had a lot of fun talking about The Carpenter's Son (2025) - a "biblical fiction" movie in which Nic Cage plays the biblical St. Joseph, adoptive father of Jesus. Please note that any criticisms we have are aimed at the movie itself and not Catholicism/Christianity/etc. Please do not take any of our laughter or comedic bits to be derogatory towards any form of religion. That aside, do give this week's ep a listen because we did enjoy talking about how weird it was! Toodles!
