Shoot the Hostage concludes its Nicolas Cage-a-thon with Pig (2021), a film that proves Nic Cage can do subtle, heartbreaking, and filthy all at once. Join Dan and Sarah as they wade through the truffle-scented forest of Michael Sarnoski's directorial debut, discussing whether this is an anti-revenge movie or Cage: Pig in the City. Expect spoilers as we discuss the film's themes, from grief and loss to the pretentious world of gourmet dining. We'll be asking the big questions, like: Is Pig just John Wick with a truffle pig instead of a puppy? How does the film deconstruct the revenge movie genre? Why are the chapter titles named after fancy food (Rustic Mushroom Tart, Mom's French Toast, A Bird, a Bottle, and a Salted Baguette)? Is Adam Arkin related to Alan Arkin? (spoilers – yes, of course!) What does this film have to say about critics & the commodification of art? (A lot, apparently!) Was Nicolas Cage almost bitten to death by an untrained pig actor (we have the answer!) If you're a fan of Nicolas Cage, indie films, or movies that make you think (and maybe cry a little), this episode is for you. We'll also be talking about the performances of Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, plus Sarah's dream of living in the woods with a pet pig and reliable Wi-Fi. Day 10 of the 31 Days of Dread Writer and director Michael Sarnoski delivers a chilling masterpiece with A Quiet Place: Day One. While the trailers may suggest a formulaic prequel, the film itself offers a fresh and terrifying experience that complements its predecessors. Sarnoski crafts a delicate balance between suspense and horror, solidifying A Quiet Place as a major force in the horror genre.

Welcome back to Deep Focus. In this week's episode, host Rodrigo Perez, also the Editor-in-Chief of The Playlist.net taslks to Michael Sarnoski, the writer and director of “A Quiet Place: Day One” which is now available to rent or buy digitally from Paramount Home Entertainment. Sarnoski, as you probably know launched his career with the quiet and delicate indie “Pig” which featured a beautifully nuanced performance out of Nicolas Cage. For his “A Quiet Place” spin-off prequel, when John Krasinski, the writer/director of the previous two franchise installments called Sarnoski to pitch him the project, he wondered if the filmmaker would want to bring his “Pig” touch to the franchise. Sarnoski went away, thought about it a bit, and pitched his take on the movie, something epic in scale set in New York, but in many ways, deeply human, character driven and subverting a lot of blockbuster tropes in the meantime. And they all went for it. And when Krasinski said he wanted some of that “Pig” touch brought into the ‘Quiet Place' franchise, well he got exactly that and maybe more. As you may already know, ‘Day One' flashes back to the first day of the invasion by deadly creatures who hunt by sound in one of the loudest places on Earth: New York City. Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn give emotionally devastating and riveting performances as strangers who embark on a harrowing journey through the eerily quiet streets of Manhattan in order to just get a slice of pizza. I spoke to Sarnoski all about the pitching of the film, the creation of the film, working with John Krasinski, Jeff Nichols' version of the script—he was the first filmmaker on the project but bowed out—whether he would ever attempt more ‘A Quiet Place' sequel and his upcoming next film, “The Death Of Robin Hood” which will star Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Episode 40 - Hype Episode: Pig (2021)In today's brief episode, it's all about Michael Sarnoski's 2021 overlooked indie feature, Pig. This heartfelt story will surprise you and remind you why Nicolas Cage is a one-of-a-kind actor. Discover why Pig is a standout, featuring one of Cage's best performances in years. The movie slowly reveals more to us about Cage's enigmatic character and how he has had a profound impact on the people around him. The supporting cast, including Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, also shines.Fun fact: Director Michael Sarnoski caught John Krasinski's eye with Pig, leading Krasinski to offer him A Quiet Place: Day One. Sarnoski brings back key collaborators from Pig for his new project, ensuring the same intimate storytelling. It's unfortunate that this 2021 film didn't receive the support needed to be on the Academy's radar, as Cage's stellar performance truly warranted a nomination at the very least. Michael Sarnoski, director of the recent summer horror hit A Quiet Place: Day One, made his feature directorial debut with 2021's Pig starring Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff. Pig is the story of a withdrawn farmer living in the Oregon woods with his trusted and lucrative truffle pig. When the pig is kidnapped, Cage's character embarks on a journey to find it and also maybe himself. The producers didn't have the money to hire a trainer for their porcine star for more than three days so they started shooting and hoped for the best - the pig ended up biting star Cage several times! For the third entry in this successful sci-fi/horror franchise, the story kicks off at the very beginning of this worldwide alien invasion....in New York City, the city that never sleeps. So now these terrifying creatures who are mainly attracted to sound waves....are landing in the ONE place with the most NOISE. :o Our main character this time around is Samira played by Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o who finds herself in the middle of this invasion and we follow her as she attempts to survive....and eventually pairs up with a British law student overseas played by Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things). What results is a contemplative thrill ride as directed by Michael Sarnoski who recently helmed the acclaimed psychodrama Pig starring Nicholas Cage. So once again, remember the main rule: SILENCE equals SURVIVAL. A Quiet Place: Day One is an alien invasion tale well and truly worth shouting about. Written and directed by our guest this week, Milwaukee-born filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, it's a rare example of sequel that prioritises its characters and their connections instead of chasing bigger, more bombastic explosions. Where most franchise follow-ups get bogged down in expanding the mythology and upping spectacle of previous instalments, this one is focused on telling a devastatingly simple story. Sam, a cancer patient by Lupita Nyong'o, realising her world is ending, crosses New York in search of one last slice from her favourite pizzeria. In the conversation you're about to hear, Sarnoski tells Al about what inspired such an intimate approach to tackling a Quiet Place sequel. We get into the scene in Central Park that unfortunately had to be scrapped and the subtle joke involving Sam's cat's name that acts as a clue to the structure/inspiration behind the movie. The writer and director Michael Sarnoski says that before he said yes to directing the spinoff A Quiet Place: Day One, he had to be certain he could bring something personal to the franchise world created by John Krasinski. On this week's episode he tells Katey Rich how he did just that, and found remarkable box office success in the process. But before that, The Ringer's Joanna Robinson joins Katey Rich for our first Oscar flashback, celebrating the 35th anniversary of sex lies and videotape and the indie film boom it inspired. Joanna and Katey look back at Steven Soderbergh's autobiographical inspirations, the performances that hold up the best, and why the Oscars weren't quite ready for this movie, even if they would be now. For this week's main podcast review, Giovanni Lago & Brendan Hodges, and I are reviewing the latest film from director Michael Sarnoski, "A Quiet Place: Day One," starring Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff & Djimon Hounsou. Serving as the third entry in the "A Quiet Place" franchise, this prequel is the first film not to be directed by John Krasinski, with Sarnoski following up the success of his indie-hit feature directorial debut "Pig." It introduces us to new characters and changes the setting to New York City. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the themes, performances, action set pieces, sound work, and more in our review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... We're back in the multi-guest business with this week's episode of the Empire Podcast, folks. First, Ben Travis has a very hushed Zoom chat with A Quiet Place: Day One director, Michael Sarnoski. [22:46 - 40:44 approx] Then, Sophie Butcher talks to Kinds Of Kindness director and star duo, Yorgos Lanthimos and Jesse Plemons. [1:00:42 - 1:15:24 approx] And, finally, we bring you an excerpt from our Bad Boys: Ride Or Die spoiler special interview with that film's directors, Adil & Bilall, in which they speak to Chris Hewitt. [1:37:28 - 1:53:14 approx] The full thing is available to subscribers, and you can subscribe at supportingcast.empire.fm. True story. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Sophie and James Dyer to tackle a listener question that combines two of Chris' obsessions, the MCU and his new love, Taskmaster, which he has only just started watching. In the movie news section, the team pay tribute to Donald Sutherland, while they also review Kinds Of Kindness, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One. The film follows Sam who is trapped in New York City during the early stages of an alien invasion. Michael shares that he was attracted to this film because of the opportunity to explore interesting character dynamics. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Michael Sarnoski to discuss: Bringing aspects of his feature film Pig to his current film, A Quiet Place: Day One How the aliens in the film are a vehicle for exploring character dynamics Michael's journey as a filmmaker Giving yourself permission to write something you care about Figuring out what a “silent New York” would sound like Balancing VFX and practical effects Creating a respectful yet constructive environment on set Michael's approach to hiring and knowing who to collaborate with Memorable Quotes “You just have to find one person that gets your idea and wants to see it happen.” [8:01] “You have to be constantly focused and moving things forward and not waiting for someone else to step in.” [11:13] “Write a really inexpensive feature you can shoot with the resources you have, and go do it. You'll learn a ton.” [32:39] Mentioned PIG A Quiet Place: Day One Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! "A Quiet Place: Day One" is the third film in the "A Quiet Place" franchise and finds "Pig" filmmaker Michael Sarnoski picking up directorial duties from franchise helmer John Krasinski. With the prequel setting the action in New York City on Day One of the Death Angels' arrival, Sarnoski takes us away from the family of the first two films and introduces us to new characters played by Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years A Slave"), "Stranger Things" breakout star Joseph Quinn, and "Old's" Alex Wolff, with Djimon Hounsou reprising his role as Henri from "A Quiet Place Part II." Sarnoski was kind enough to return to the podcast and spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Paramount Pictures. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... “Initially, I never thought film was an option. I grew up in Wisconsin,” says Michael Sarnoski, “and I didn't have a lot of artistic, creative people around me or outlets to share in. I think storytelling, doodling, writing, and drawing comics — that was my hobby, my secret. It was very gradual.” Overtime, Sarnoski met other kindred spirits who shared his same passions. “I was never like, I'm going to go write and direct feature films. That seemed very far away from a possibility. Instead, it “snowballed” over a long timeline. Rather than go to Film School, the writer-director made a series of shorts, such as Love of the Dead, Mirrors, Fight Night Legacy (later a series), and That. “A lot of it was just building confidence,” he says. His debut film, however, really put Sarnoski on the map as a creative voice. Nicolas Cage stars in Pig. The plot reads, “A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregon wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.” “I was writing a feature with the hope of directing it,” he says of Pig. “Originally, I wrote it as something that could be done with really little money. If no one would pay for it, I was going to find a way to do it run and gun.” The basic idea was “an old man in the woods with his truffle pig.” Sarnoski says, “But I was like, ‘I shouldn't write a movie about that — that would be silly.' But it didn't leave my head and this happens with me. I need to write it just to get it out of my system even if it's going to be silly or [I assume] no one is going to buy it or whatever.” The script poured out of him. “It magically happened. In writing it, I thought ‘Who would get the chance to make a movie like this?' I think the specificity of Pig was what helped people come behind it and make it. It also allowed me to Direct it.” Producers basically told him, “You know what it's about so maybe you should direct it.” “It's always a messy process for your first film and it doesn't feel like it's going to work but it worked and just enough people got behind it that we were able to make it.” Producer Vanessa Block also helped with the script and to push it into production.
