Join Oliver as he chills with award-winning standup comedian & cartoonist Jacob Samuel! Known for his insightful wit and clever joke writing, Jacob has appeared multiple times at both the Just For Laughs and Winnipeg Comedy Festivals. In 2021 his debut comedy album 'Horse Power' impressively took home the JUNO award for comedy album of the year. He is also a talented cartoonist that has published two books and has had his work featured in 'The New Yorker' several times! The podcast begins with Jacob describing his origins in comedy and reflecting on working his way up in the clubs. This leads to talk about the many different trends in comedy that have emerged over the years, and why it's so important to hone your own unique comedic voice. Jacob opens up about the bittersweet experience of winning a JUNO, while simultaneously grieving the loss of his mother. The conversation then shifts to marriage and Jacob explains to Oliver how food poisoning ended up being the uninvited guest at his wedding party. All this and more in this fun, down-to-earth chat! Recorded on October 12th, 2024 Audio/Visual Production by Brian Reilly Edited (poorly) by Oliver George Additional editing and graphics by Maverick Reilly (so talented!) Comedian Jacob Samuel returns to talk standing ovations, AI on Facebook, and silence.
Jacob Samuel has a couple references to his Judaism in his stand-up routine. In the past, whenever he brought it up, it usually created a moment of tension before a laugh. But in the year since Oct. 7, especially in his hometown of Vancouver, he's noticed a shift. It's harder to talk about his Jewish identity onstage. He brings it up later, or takes out a couple jokes if the laugh isn't big enough. Yet Samuel, who won a Juno award for his debut comedy album in 2021, is determined to keep telling audiences he's Jewish. As he tells The CJN's arts podcasters on Culturally Jewish, that visibility is important, even with antisemitism on the rise. And getting people comfortable enough to laugh along with him is critical. Samuel is will be hitting the road this month, performing in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal before returning to B.C. for a headline show at the Chutzpah! Festival in Vancouver. Myles Anderson and Jacob Samuel have an instrumental discussion on whether the piano is superior to the guitar. Then, Sean Lecomber and Robby Hoffman show each other who's Hugo Boss when they decide if brand names matter.
Austin Lonneberg (comedian) joins the show for the first time to tell us about a time he had to block a Redditor after the Reddit guy made fun of Austin's comedy and then when Austin went to check out his profile, he revealed...well, he took us to a very interesting sub-Reddit. We learned a lot. And that's not the only thing we learned a lot about on this episode, as Austin tells us about going to the gym late at night and this somehow leads to us diving WAY too deep into Steven Seagal's history, from his legendarily bad SNL performance to his horrendous recent movies. It's a wild rabbithole. Plus, Austin gets fooled on TikTok into watching Andrew Tate clips, Stefan checks in on Darren Rovell, and John sparks some funny text messages after Drake goes viral for a strange DM slide. If you want to slide into our DMs (sort of), you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, Jacob Samuel joined us for one of the truly stupidest mailbags of all-time, where we spend 20 minutes answering a question in the dumbest way possible. This week, it's the return of the Canadian Education Programme as Lance St. Laurent returns to watch a beloved Canadian miniseries with us. We also have ad-free episodes and a whole lot more, so check it out! Austin Lonneberg is a comedian and you can follow him on social media for clips and tour dates at @austinlonneberg. We are back to our regularly scheduled program after Freaky February, and who better to join us than Lane Moore (author, podcaster) to discuss how she is at odds with--but also in love with--Facebook's online marketplace. There's no contention on the rest of the episode though, as we discuss podcast theme songs, the downfall of Twitter and now TikTok, Stefan's new gaming laptop, and how almost every online parody song is about COVID. Plus, girlbossing your way through mental health, Trapt gets denied by a venue, and Stefan walks us through the terrifying "Willy Wonka Experience". If you want to live in a world of pure imagination, you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty and donate to our show! $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, it was the amazing conclusion of our BPD&D Season 3 with Jesse and db from YKS, and this week, Jacob Samuel returns to the show for an in-person mailbag. We also have ad-free episodes, merch discounts, and much more, so check it out today! Lane Moore is a podcaster and author whose latest book, "You're Not the Only One F*cking Up" is available now. You can follow her on Instagram at @hellolanemoore. This episode is also available in video format on our YouTube. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jacob Samuel tells a Winnipeg audience to forget ambulances and police; always call the Fire Department! And from Parry Sound, Moe Ismail tells us that he has travelled this beautiful country and he is - underwhelmed?

Yumi Nagashima and Lara Rae bicker over blonde icon Barbie's revival. Then, Jacob Samuel and Martha Chaves have a taxing talk when they decide if it's time to break the taboo and have conversations about money.
Jacob Samuel (comedian) tells us about the time that he was preparing for an album taping for Just for Laughs and got into it with a local showrunner who didn't want to give Jacob stage time for some reason and caught the block. Luckily, there are lots of great reasons to give Jacob mic time on our show, as something pretty big happened since last time Jacob was here: he won a damn Juno! We discuss what it means to win a "Canadian Grammy" in Covid times and we go deep on rec league sports: coming back after a long layoff, getting injured, bad players, picking the right division, and the craziness that is rec league ball hockey. We also find time for Stalin and data collection too. Plus! Jacob tells us about RV Instagram, Stefan finds out that Tony Posnanski referenced us in a blog post, and John gets a nice greeting from the people who repaired his blender. If you want to feel like you've repaired your life (and ours), you can help support the show by heading over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every dang month. Last month, Stefan finally got behind the wheel for the first time in over a decade and we filmed the whole thing! Episode 2 of "Stefan Takes An L" is now live and this week, another mailbag episode is on the way! Plus you get merch discounts, access to our Discord, and our entire back catalogue of bonus episodes! So head on over and help us out! We've met BULLYACHE during Transmissions XIV Festival curated by Marta Salogni.BULLYACHE is a working class collaboration between friends and artists Tylor Deyn and Jacob Samuel. We both choreograph, direct, score and conceptualise all of our own work. BULLYACHE is the title and character through which we explore and experiment with music, dance and performance. BULLYACHE is in their parents' makeup: flashing between acoustic balladry and rave somnambulism while feeling comfortable in neither, a hyper regurgitation of capital expectations. Our collaboration started at the end of the Pandemic and so far has been supported by the Arts Council England, PRS, Raze Collective, HAckney Showroom The Place, Britten Pears, Palm Heights Cayman Islands, Bijloke LOD Muziektheater and We are the New Voice Composers of Sound and Music 2021. 2022 has marked a real change of pace for Transmissions, from the new location, in the splendid setting of the new theatre in the heart of the city, to an international line-up of absolute level, selected by the curator Marta Salogni to whom all our gratitude: 13 artists and bands from 7 countries for an 80% female line-up, which gave life to an intense live program throughout 3 days. The strength of Transmissions has once again demonstrated that it resides in the ability to generate a community around itself: a multicultural, open and multifaceted community that is reflected in a heterogeneous, curious and always, positively, unpredictable proposal. For this we want to thank all the artists who took part in the three days following all the performances scheduled from the audience, but also our audience who from all over Italy (and from the United Kingdom, Austria, France, Spain and Switzerland) reached Ravenna to make this fourteenth edition unique.Transmissions is promoted by Bronson and it's a festival for true explorers. Its adventure has just begun. Jacob Samuel (comedian) joins the show for only our second fully in-studio episode since March, and we waste no time getting down to business, as Jacob has a run-in with the Chief Entergagement Officer of Toronto's weird, Garfield-themed Uber Eats restaurant over a role in a movie the CEO was funding. Everything in that sentence is somehow true, and we break it all down for you in the Block Tale. The Blocked Boys also find some time to meander, as we discuss the curling emoji, pets, Vancouver politics, ice cream, and Stefan tries to reclaim his throne as the man with the worst takes in podcasting. It doesn't go well. What does go very well with this episode, however, is some more Blocked Party! Head on over to https://patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5 a month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month, including our latest, an all-Cameo bonus episode with Brandon Wardell and Jack Wagner. There seems to be a lot of interest in books that get made one at a time. We’ll hear from Jacob Samuel, a fine-arts publisher whose limited-edition books are so carefully crafted they’re considered museum pieces even when they’re new. And we also welcome David Drum, a journalist, novelist, and poet who makes and sells his own hand-crafted editions. Drum is also the author of the new Gothic novel Heathcliff: The Lost Years (fans of Wuthering Heights take note). #amwriting #selfpub #podcast What IS a handmade book? Are there different types? How did you come to do them, and how do you market them? And, as ever, there's lots of advice on how to get published, including the support resources at our website getpublishedradio.com.
