One of my favorite records of 2021! Imagine if John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane had the opportunity to make one more record together, it would sound like this record "WAX///WANE" Bio Information on Lucien Johnson: Lucien Johnson has been described as “a saxophonist and composer of rare excellence and mettle.” Involved in a diverse range of artistic projects, his music always succeeds in maintaining a distinctive sound, with a chameleonic emotional range that can shift from warm and intimate through to radical and rebellious. Growing up in an artistic household in Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, New Zealand, Johnson took off for Europe at the age of 22. Since then his music has been greatly informed by his global travelling and encounters. Living in Paris for most of his formative years in the 2000s, he performed in a free improvising trio with Alan Silva (master free jazz double bassist and contemporary of Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra and Albert Ayler) and Makoto Sato, releasing an album on French label Improvised Beings. He has performed with a long list of luminaries from jazz and improvised music, such as Mulatu Astatke, Barre Phillips, Marilyn Crispell, John Betsch, Steve Potts, Jobic Le Masson and Lol Coxhill. He returned to New Zealand in 2009 where he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Victoria University. Johnson has composed music for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Dance Company, for short film and documentaries and for his own projects. He was musical director of Shogun Orchestra which released two albums on German label Jakarta Records. His latest album under his own name, “West of the Sun”, was released on Japanese label Wonderful Noise and was a finalist for NZ jazz album of the year. Johnson is the composer for Borderline Arts Ensemble, directed by choreographer Lucy Marinkovich. For their work, LOBSTERS, Johnson was awarded Sound Designer of the Year and was also nominated for Outstanding Composer at the Wellington Theatre Awards. Johnson wrote the scipt and music for their next project, STRASBOURG 1518, which was a major commission for the 2020 New Zealand Festival. It was subsequently performed at the 2021 Auckland Arts Festival and at a sold-out return Wellington season to rave reviews. Johnson and Marinkovich were co-recipients of the 2018 Harriet Friedlander New York Residency, administered by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Salutations Mortals!
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

▶ Snippet premiered on Stay Cool w/ seangran 001 feat. Ivan Ave & Evil Needle: bit.ly/staycoolradio001 ▶ Get early updates on the show: twitter.com/staycoolfam I'm honoured to have had @IvanAve as my very first interview subject for Stay Cool all the way back in March. The musician and DJ has been a mainstay in my playlists at home since I first heard “Obedience” with Mndsgn off of @Jakarta-Records' Spring In Jakarta release. There's something about his unassumingly deep lyrics and demeanour that, coupled with beats by Ringgo and his numerous fellow @Mutual-Intentions collaborators, has always appealed to me in a way few rappers do. Above a very groovy (and noisy) Camden Academy DJ set we sat for a chat and discussed a number of things; here's a handy list so you can keep track. We talked about: (0:00) Shows in London, how he got into hip hop & DJing and his stage presence (4:39) His musical upbringing (6:25) How his Oslo based crew Mutual Intentions came together (10:13) The homegrown hip hop scene in Norway and how international music is received there (11:52) Whether growing up in Norway had a large effect on what he does now (13:19) The story behind “Also” with Kaytranada and Kiefer (15:39) Letting things happen naturally, the message behind his music and his music as a sanctuary beyond the BS (18:31) The stunning “Also” video and how Also Known As, the Oslo-based producers that produced the video, are deeply tied to the concept of the song (20:32) His connection to London and artists / platforms from the area that he's a fan of (s/o to Wu-Lu, Hawk House and others) (22:27) His favourite vinyl that he's discovered in the last year (Candle Tribe - Boogie / R&B from the late 80's) (23:31) Producing beats himself, old aliases and the status of Every Eye (24:58) The Hands project from his early days and the importance of the strength physical realm in his lyrics (27:37) How his writing process has changed over his career. Stopping rapping after 30?! (28:50) Nas being the greatest of all time, his beat selection and Life Is Good (31:19) Recent (and old) albums he's been listening to lately (33:11) Show equipment and his 1997 SP-555 (34:35) The unique position of being a White, Northern European rapper and the importance of awareness of the place of such a person in the music game (38:02) Artists to look out for (Jawn Rice, Joyce Wrice and Jon Bap) (40:17) His plans for 2017 (40:55) His relationship with Jakarta Records and why it's such a great home for his music

Intro : – Guilty Simpson feat. Nuggsey and Matt are back in full effect. There's talk of bonsai (is that the correct plural use?), the nature of the universe, concert etiquitte and the worldwide reach of the Superbowl. It's all over the place, just the way we like it. The intro and outro music is from a German emcee called UMSE, off the album "Kunst Für Sich", which translates to "Art in Itself". It was released on German record label, Jakarta Records last year. I have no idea what he's saying, but I love the shit out of it. I guess that makes me a flow strumpet.. I always knew I was a vain piece of shit. The beats are by a dude called Deckah, you can check his Soundcloud here--> https://soundcloud.com/deckahbeats If you like the song at the end of this, and want to suss out some more from UMSE, Deckah and a plethora of other cool shit, head over to https://jakartarecords-label.bandcamp.com/music and peruse the fine selection they have up for offer. Here's a direct link to the UMSE album, https://jakartarecords-label.bandcamp.com/album/kunst-f-r-sich, the instrumental version of the album was released only a few weeks ago so there might be some vinyl still available.
