After releasing a captivating debut single called "Dancing with Sue" in June of 2020, Wyatt C. Louis created a stir that saw them gain fans across Alberta, Canada, and beyond. But it would be nearly four years until Wyatt's debut full-length album was released. The album Chandler, released on May 27, 2024, shot straight to #1 on CKUA's weekly Top 30 chart. Their songs are pensive, deeply felt, and slow burning, while their supple voice and guitar work express wonder and vulnerability. The candid solo performances that Wyatt shared with us in CKUA's Studio A are intimate and beautiful. This live session took place in December 2024 — just as CKUA's music library team had crunched the numbers and determined that Wyatt's album, Chandler, had become the most played on CKUA's airwaves for the entire year. As a special bonus, we had the opportunity to surprise Wyatt with the joyful news that they were #1 for 2024! It's a moment of pure joy, alongside Wyatt's blissful music and conversation. The Hidden Track podcast is a CKUA production, made possible by the generosity of our donors. Thank you for your support! Final weekend arrives for Beacon eatery When Joe Robitaille bought Homespun Foods, a mainstay at 232 Main St. in Beacon, he didn't plan to change much. Offering an array of Mediterranean- and Middle Eastern-influenced soups, salads, platters and sandwiches, the previous owner, Jessica Reisman, had cultivated a dedicated clientele after opening the restaurant in 2006. Homespun seated about 40 customers in its cozy, cafe-like setting, with extra tables in a garden patio. Robitaille, a sommelier for eight years in New York City before he moved to Beacon with his wife and three sons, took over in November 2019. He hoped to retain the down-home feel that Reisman had created while adding table service, dinner hours and an extensive selection of wine. That was the plan until the pandemic arrived four months later. On March 16, 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered restaurants and bars to close, permitting only takeout and delivery. Homespun opted to shut down for 10 weeks while health officials scrambled to contain COVID-19. By the end of June, the city had allowed restaurants to create "parklets," or tables for outdoor dining in curbside parking spots. Eight months into the new gig, Robitaille found himself planting flowers to spruce up his outdoor dining area on Main Street. Indoor customers would return over the Memorial Day weekend of 2021, but nothing was normal. After an 18-year run, Homespun will close its doors on Sunday (Aug. 18). An announcement of a new business in the space is forthcoming. "We tried our best to make this thing work," Robitaille said. "It's been a hit on so many levels. We had a lot of great experiences with people." Robitaille, who has a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry and creative writing and a master's in education, both from Brooklyn College, plans to spend time with his family before re-entering the academic world. Before Homespun, he was an adjunct lecturer at Brooklyn and Lehman colleges. While the early days of the pandemic seem in some ways like a distant memory, the ripple effects on small businesses remain. "Costs are going up so much," Robitaille said. As consumers struggle with inflation, "going out to eat becomes more difficult. Restaurants are trying to figure out how to keep people coming back but not being too expensive." He noted that some business owners are experimenting with artificial intelligence and ordering by phone while in the restaurant as ways to eliminate employees and keep costs down. Although Homespun did not go in that direction, "unfortunately, that's the trend," he said. "It takes away from the human element of eating in a restaurant that we all love." George Mansfield, who closed his popular Dogwood bar and restaurant on East Main Street last year, said his business also never fully recovered from the shutdown. "In the best of times, the restaurant industry has very tight margins," he said. A 10 percent profit would be ideal but 6 percent is more realistic, "and when you have all these other factors - the cost and availability of goods and labor, credit card fees - working against you, those margins become increasingly slim. "If Dogwood had been making money, I would have stayed open," Mansfield said. Robitaille said he's grateful to the chefs, sommelier Heather Barr and other staff who worked alongside him during challenging times. "It's almost difficult to remember how hard 2020 and 2021 were for businesses, especially restaurants," he said. "But our staff came together and persevered through it and we felt like we made something special here."
MC Design Academy is designed to be a space where I get to share my expertise with you, where you'll get to learn all about visual merchandising, design, display, retail, and everything in between. Come along as I practice my craft and be sure to like, subscribe, and follow our socials to keep updated. See you in the merchandising land of MC Design Academy!A printmaking graduate from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Michelle Galletta is the founder of Kiriki Press. The idea was inspired by Michelle wanting to make her niece Madeleine an embroidered doll but couldn't find a pattern anywhere. Michelle decided to learn how to embroider so she could make her a set of three owl dolls to play with. It was difficult to find contemporary embroidery patterns that weren't overly simplistic, let alone embroidered doll patterns, so Michelle ended up designing her own. As she was making Madeleine's owls, she became fascinated with embroidery: the vibrant colors, the countless variety of stitches, and the calming effect it had on her. After several years of improving her embroidery skills (and a ton of design work), Kiriki Press was born. It was developed in the hopes of giving others the chance to make something precious with their own hands. Kiriki Press was launched in December 2012 with seven patterns, and the collection has grown over the years and is currently expanding to include a range of other DIY products. Michelle was chosen as a featured seller on Etsy and has been a contributor to Mollie Makes books and magazines. The company has been featured in Uppercase, Canadian Living, Chatelaine, Bust Magazine, and Homespun, as well as many other print publications and craft blogs. Here, Michelle takes us inside her shop and shares how she moved from her prototype dolls into full production. She also talks about how she transitioned from what she thought was her dream job into starting a business of her own. Michelle shares her experience at her very first show, how she handled business growth through the pandemic, and where she finds inspiration. What's Inside:How Michelle moved from prototype to full productionMichelle's experience at her first showWhere Michelle finds inspirationMentioned In This Episode:www.kirikipress.comKiriki Press on InstagramKiriki Press on FacebookKiriki Press on Pinterest

Last week we lost Happy Traum, one of the shining lights of acoustic music for over half a century. It's hard to fully grasp, in our online world where everything is right there whenever we need it, just what an enormous contribution Happy and the Homespun team made to helping people learn roots and acoustic music.I was lucky enough to get to chat to Happy a couple of times for the podcast, and he spoke about how strongly he felt that their role was to document, as well as teach. Watching the videos they put out with Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Norman Blake and Bill Monroe (and many more) it's hard to think of a bigger contribution to documenting an era of music! To celebrate Happy's extraordinary influence, which will continue for many years through Homespun's legacy, I'm re-posting the chat I had with him for the podcast back in June of 2022. Countless people learned to play an instrument thanks to the books, tapes, videos, CDs, DVDs and downloads Homespun put out, with some of the leading names in roots music, including Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Sam Bush and many, many more.Happy shares the story of how Homespun was born, around a kitchen table, as well as memories of working with some of those iconic musicians, many of whom became friends along the way.Happy will be dearly missed by those who knew him, as well as by people like me, who didn't, but whose lives were enriched by his work.Thank you Happy!MattVisit Homespun's website to check out their extraordinary catalogue Send a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Bec Bignell is a West Australian film maker on the road to big things, her biggest project to-date, her film HOMESPUN was picked up by streaming giant STAN last year after being acquired by ABC Commercial. Bec's main mission in her film making is to challenge stereotypes everywhere. She's pushing boundaries in her narratives, her characters and in the way she produces film. In many ways this film is based on a lifetime of observation and for that Rural Australia is lucky to have her - because her perspective as someone who grew up in WA's wheatbelt runs deep, drawing on her experiences and observations of childhood, community, stereotypes, expectations, hard times, good times - its endless. HOMESPUN was was financed in large part by Bec personally. It was shot in just two-weeks with locals - who had no acting experience - featured as many of the main characters. I've watched it a few times now and there are so many relatable moments, that hit deep in parts and just make you laugh in others. It's refreshing to see how humorous and engaging these kind of characters can be on screen - because really, we've never seen rural Australia depicted in this way before. You have to make time to see this film. Here's the trailer - https://youtu.be/IGBMaGS3G_s And here's the film on Stan - https://www.stan.com.au/watch/homespun-2021 Thank you to Rabobank for sponsoring this season of Company. Kathryn Garland is a super energetic mom, spouse and newer homesteader who is so real, and in the best way - I love how she lays it out. I also LOVE that she's in British Columbia. Literally on my tiny bucket list of 2 places I need to go someday! She shares a great message of start where you are and expand as you can, which is so simple, yet really works for everything, right? So profound. At least for me. Kathryn shares their beginning story, which is only about a year and a half, and how insanely quickly they scaled up (she's not an "ease in" type of person), and how that's working. She's also about to release her podcast, called Homespun, which I'm SO excited for! She said November 20, so be on the lookout - I sure will be!We do touch on some of the harder parts of homesteading (animal death), so I want you to be aware if you're extra sensitive to that. I needed a second to compose myself, but it's part of the journey, and it happens and is important to be prepared for. This is part of Kathryn's Instagram Bio: " Home based living (food, education, homesteading, healing) Loving life and simple pleasures"I love that so much! My dear friend of many years, who is over 90 years old now, really warmed my heart this past week with a letter. She has always written beautiful and inspiring letters with many warm thoughts. She has enjoyed the book, "Love is a Quilt," and sent thoughts about homespun patchwork quilts on these chilly autumn evenings one feels the need for that warm comforter quilt. Here are her thoughts. Art Appreciation: Lord, sometimes when I look at my life, it seems like a homespun patchwork quilt. Quaint, but not quite together. There are bits and pieces of cloth and colors, scraps of material, the days of my life. When you began to put together the days of my life, you must have known where each piece would go. You've told me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. And I believe you Lord, I do. I may not be a velvet tapestry, but even crazy quilts have a purpose - to give warmth, and cozy comfort, and color to a room. Whatever I am Lord, you made me lovingly, carefully, reverently, and exactly right. Thanks dear friend for these warm thoughts. You have touched the lives of many individuals with your letters. Thanks for all you're sharing and caring. With the holidays approaching, send along your gems with thought. Another Warm Thought: When we become reluctant to change, we need to remind ourselves of the beauty of autumn. Growing up in a Jamaican family in Florida, June McDoom was surrounded by reggae; but she found herself drawn to the sounds of 1960's and 1970's folk. Now based in New York, she has released her debut EP, which surrounds those songs with touches of psychedelia, and arrangements that in their own homespun way seem to echo another sound of the 60s – Phil Spector's so-called "wall of sound". In her intimate acoustic musings, June McDoom's voice rarely rises above a breathy croon, following its own melody regardless of the kaleidoscope of sounds behind her. McDoom and her band play in-studio. Set list: "On My Way", "Stone After Stone", "By June" June McDoom by June McDoom

Protests against British policy involved more than angry speeches--Amricans changed what they wore and how they bought their clothes. Kimberly Alexander from the University of New Hampshire tells us about how Americans began fashioning their own clothing. In addition to two books on fashion: Treasures Afoot: Shoe Stories from the Georgian Era, and Fashioning the New England Family, which grew out of an exhibit at the Massachusetts Historical Society, Professor Alexander and her students have created the Flax Project, growing flax and producing linen, as a way to experience the fabric of 18th-century life.

Ray Flacke is another Tele-favorite of mine. I became aware of him through his work with Ricky Skaggs and soon started scouring the record bins for anything he had played on. I found that I had a great affinity for his singular style, which utilized low-string bends, an aggressive attack, and a sense that at any moment he might fly off the tracks. In this episode, I lay out his history, gear, and some licks that are very "Flacke" sounding. To Support the Channel:Tip jar: https://paypal.me/AskZacOr check out my store at - www.askzac.comRay Flacke's Country Telecaster Virtuosity video from Homespun. Episode Notes This week in 1769... when the House of Burgesses sponsored at ball at Williamsburg's capitol building, Virginian women shunned fine Bristish fabrics and showed up in homespun gowns. This was seen as a patriotic act of defiance, and inspired women all over America to wear homespun in protest of British policies. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Yesterday was June 8th 2022 and would have been Tony Rice's birthday. As a tribute to Tony I've put together a compilation of some of the conversations I've had for this podcast where the guests mentioned Tony. I wanted to wait till today to release it as yesterday, Tony's actual birthday, I was speaking to Happy Traum of Homespun, who was a good friend of Tony's and worked closely with him. I wanted to make sure we included something from Happy. So here, a day late but hopefully worth the wait, is Bluegrass Jam Along's birthday tribute to Tony Rice.If you want to hear the full interviews these came from, here they are:Chris Eldridge interview Mike Marshall interviewMarcel Ardans interviewHappy picking (and happy birthday Tony!)Matt
Straight out of Essexville Michigan, the Ides Of March band leader Timmothy Ward rode the late '60s Michigan music scene with multiple singles (45's) and a cease and desist order direct from another band named Ides Of March out of Chicago. That didn't stop him from rocking his next band the Blues Company, more singles and constant regional touring. Then he hit the wall. Recording a homemade/studio collaboration album called Timmothy--Strange But True on his own Pear Records label (you know, not Apple), the 300 pressed 1972 album found its way into the cut out bins around Mid-Michigan. Including boxes from the man himself. Nowadays, a minty copy can fetch around $1000. It was reissued in the early '00's for an album-to-album printing, with Ward selling the rights for another limited 300 pressing. While not quite as powerful as the debut sonically, the album also contains his single 'Maybe I'm High', which outsold the original full-length as a 45 to collectors and hoisted Ward into a stratosphere that he didn't know he was even in. Here is his story, on the 50th Anniversary.
Tom Ellis joins me on episode 62 for something a little bit different as we do a retrospective of the legendary Paul Butterfield, with Tom our resident expert. Born in 1942 in Chicago, Butterfield frequented many of the South Side blues clubs located there and even had the audacity to hire Howling Wolf's rhythm section before going on to record his seminal album ‘The Paul Butterfield Blues Band'. His high energy form of blues launched him on the scene and he quickly followed this with the genre busting East West album, with the band evolving further in the following albums by incorporating horns. Butter moved to Woodstock and formed Better Days. He also appeared in some notable sideman roles, including The Last Waltz concert with The Band.Butterfield has left us a tremendous body of work. He helped bring blues to the mainstream and created his own sound on harmonica that is as influential as any of the classic harmonica players.Links:Tom's Blues Access magazine articles on Butterfield:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_25/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_27/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_29/butter.htmlhttp://www.bluesaccess.com/No_31/butter.htmlEast West Live album review:https://www.bluespower.com/447rev.htmHorn From The Heart documentary:https://www.hornfromtheheart.com/Homespun instructional material:https://www.homespun.com/instructors/paul-butterfield/Videos:Album with John Mayall:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR040iW52_cPerforming at Woodstock in 1969:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h62W2ARtwU8Mystery Train with The Band:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-fmqOU8_UoPlaying with Muddy Waters:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Sj5tpn-noPerforming with BB King, Eric Clapton, Steve Ray Vaughan:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-i-tIXxtlY2015 Hall of Fame Induction, with Jason Ricci:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMxFvBVTWmMPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS
