Hustle has only been out for a few weeks, but the vast majority of opinions seem to be that this is one of the best things Adam Sandler has ever done. We're with the majority. It's not perfect and it riffs on many movies that came before it, but Jeremiah Zagar's 2nd film has a big heart, dynamic basketball action and features terrific performances by Juancho Hernangomez and the Sand Man. Their chemistry makes the movie work, although the husband-wife glue between Sandler and Queen Latifah is key too. Okay, yeah, Zagar wastes the great Robert Duvall. Ben Foster doesn't get much to do either, but any movie that showcases so many real-life b-ball stars and pays off this many set-ups will always get a rave from us. So don't drive while distracted (or while drunk), but trash-talk your sensitive opponent to throw him off his game and for Bob's sake never back down as we point out the many upsides of Hustle. We can be tweeted (@moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies) about the fact that the Golden State Warriors DID win another NBA championship or email us (scoringatthemovies@gmail.com) about that or anything else sports-related

In this episode Jorge chats with his long time friend, Raul Castillo. Raúl Castillo is an actor across the film, television, and theater mediums. He is best known for his portrayal of Paps in the critically acclaimed independent feature We the Animals, based on the Justin Torres novel of the same name and directed by Jeremiah Zagar, which brought him an Independent Spirit Award nomination; and for his starring role as Richie on the Michael Lannan-created groundbreaking HBO series Looking, which ran for two seasons before wrapping up with a telefilm. For his work on Looking, he earned the award for Best Comedic Actor from the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) and the Lupe Award from the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. Castillo is completing work on two Netflix features: Night Teeth, directed by Adam Randall, and Army of the Dead (Summer 2021), from writer/director Zack Snyder. His upcoming movies also include Chad Hartigan's Little Fish for IFC Films and Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man, the latter to be released by MGM.
This week we sat down with some old friends. Jeremy Yaches and Jeremiah Zagar are talented filmmakers/storytellers. The duo and their film company, Public Record, are responsible for a number of important films. We start the show off with Anni Ramsay talking about her role as an actress and the many plays coming to UBC. We then have a short review of the poetry book, "Bolt", by Hilary Peach with a launch of our new segment, Fringey Life, that focuses on the many art events going on at the Fringe Festival. Fringey Life interviews Jill Raymond about her dark humor show, HYSTERIA and Tom Hill talking about his comedy show Hip.Bang! We sign off with one last review on the movie "We, The Animals" by Jeremiah Zagar that premiered at Vancouver International Film Festival.
Us three. Us brothers. Us kings, inseparable. Three boys tear through their childhood, in the midst of their young parents’ volatile love that makes and unmakes the family many times over. While Manny and Joel grow into versions of their loving and unpredictable father, Ma seeks to shelter her youngest, Jonah, in the cocoon of home. More sensitive and conscious than his older siblings, Jonah increasingly embraces an imagined world all his own. With a screenplay by Dan Kitrosser and Jeremiah Zagar based on the celebrated Justin Torres novel, We the Animals is a visceral coming-of-age story propelled by layered performances from its astounding cast of Sheila Vand, Raul Castillo, and three talented, young first-time actors, Evan Rosado, Isaiah Kristian, Josiah Gabriel as well as stunning animated sequences which bring Jonah’s torn inner world to life. Drawing from his documentary background, director Jeremiah Zagar creates an immersive portrait of working class family life and brotherhood. Director and screenwriter Jeremiah Zagar joins us to talk about his gorgeous and ethereal tale of young boys struggling to find their own way in a tattered landscape of family and identity. His portrayal of “Richie" on the HBO series “Looking” brought Raúl Castillo some serious recognition and started moving him into bigger and better parts. One such role is “Pops” in the astonishing queer coming-of-age film “We The Animals” (in theaters now) directed by Jeremiah Zagar from the Justin Torres best-seller. Castillo talks in depth about his process of bringing this complex character to life, and the importance of owning your space as an actor. Plus we do a deep-dive into the straight man’s approach to same-sex on-camera kissing.
Episode 126 of One Week Only! This is our "Youth in America" episode, with four terrific films centered around teenage life in the United States. Our key film this week is "We The Animals," a stunning coming-of-age drama about three Puerto Rican brothers growing up in upstate New York with and stuggling with their volatile parents. With gorgeous 16mm cinematography, thrilling hand-drawn animation and moving performances, Jeremiah Zagar's film is a breathtaking cinematic vision and one of the best films of the year. (35:10) We also review the experimental performance drama "Madeline's Madeline" starring an incredible Helena Howard, directed by Josephine Decker (9:10), the NYC skater girls drama "Skate Kitchen" directed by Crystal Moselle (18:10), and the coming-of-age skating documentary "Minding the Gap" directed by Bing Liu (27:15). We sat down with the director and cast of We The Animals a day ahead of their LA premiere at Outfest. We had an incredible conversation with the first time director Jeremiah Zagar and two cast members, Sheila Vand and Raul Castillo. You can catch the film TONIGHT at 8pm at the DGA in Hollywood or as a part of its nationwide theatrical release on August 17th!
In this hour, Sheila Vand gifts us with a glimpse into the inner life of an incredibly talented young actor on the verge of harnessing her art and reaching new heights. She first captured our attention in Ana Lily Amirpour's noir vampire western A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, and in the small but pivotal role of Sahar, the Iranian housekeeper, in ARGO. Co-starring stints on NBC's STATE OF AFFAIRS and FOX's 24 LEGACY followed, and by the end of this episode she'll make you anxious to see two of her upcoming projects, Jeremiah Zagar's festival hit WE THE ANIMALS and the TV adaption of SNOWPIERCER. She'll also make you optimistic for the future of the entertainment business, so long as she is in it.
"We The Animals" is one of the most visually inventive and breathtaking independent features of the year. All of this was accomplished under the watchful eye of writer/director Jeremiah Zagar. After spending years making documentaries and short films, Zagar's feature narrative debut premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and is now opening in theaters in limited release on August 17th from The Orchard. Jeremiah was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time to talk about the making of his new film. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
