Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREIn this solo episode of Maximum Lawyer Live, Tyson Mutrux unpacks a powerful idea: most of what you think is “just who I am” is actually a series of choices you've made, and can change. Inspired by Sydney Sweeney's physical and mental transformation to play boxer Christy Martin, Tyson explores how our looks, leadership style, and even our “bad habits” are usually the result of repeated decisions, not permanent traits. He weaves in a moving Eric Church commencement clip about a guitar that's slightly out of tune, reminding you that there is a core “chord” running through you that should stay constant while you intentionally upgrade everything around it.From visualizing the future version of yourself to stepping into different roles (parent, firm leader, spouse, business owner) on purpose, Tyson gives you a practical mindset shift: stop saying “I'm not organized” or “I'm bad at hiring” and start saying “I haven't chosen to get good at this yet.”Most lawyers hide behind fixed labels like “I'm not a numbers person” or “I'm just bad at sales.” Tyson explains why those identities are choices, and how to change them without losing who you really are.In this episode, you'll learn:How watching Sydney Sweeney play boxer Christy Martin sparked a deep question: how much of how we look, act, and lead is actually a choice? Why your “look” isn't just clothes and hair, but training, eating, body language, and how you carry yourself as a leader. The difference between your unchangeable inner “chord” (your core values) and the roles you can intentionally step into. How to use visualization to become the future version of yourself, including the way Tyson borrows characters like the lawyer from “The Judge” to snap into a different mode. Why saying “I'm disorganized,” “I'm bad at hiring,” or “I'm not a numbers person” is just dodging responsibility—and how to reframe those as underdeveloped skills you're actively improving. How intentional decisions around health, fitness, and training now pay off for your 50-, 60-, and 80-year-old self.Highlights01:00 - The Christy Martin movie that sparked Tyson's identity rabbit hole03:12 - How Hollywood proves “the look follows the decision” (training, eating, moving differently)05:09 - The unchanging “chord” inside you and why you shouldn't try to rewrite it06:45 - Visualization 101 – stepping into the future version of you on purpose (Billy Terrasio shoutout)08:18 - Using characters like “The Judge” to snap into parent, leader, and owner roles09:52 - Why Tyson wore a three‑piece suit at MaxLawCon and Disrupt while everyone else went casual11:24 - Health as a long game – building muscle in your 40s for your 50‑ and 80‑year‑old self13:03 - “I'm just not organized” and other identity lies law firm owners tell themselves14:37 - Reframing your labels: “I haven't chosen to get good at this… yet”16:02 - Teaching kids (and teams) to replace “I'm bad at this” with “I'm working on getting better”17:25 - Turning decisions into reality – training, support, and telling your leadership team who you're becoming19:10 - Final challenge: audit your labels, choose new ones, and keep that core chord intact

For this Out Takes, we celebrated the recent success of Leela Varghese at the 2026 AACTA Awards for ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ and ‘I’m The Most Racist Person I Know’ (which were two of our favourite queer films of 2025) by revisiting our interview with her from last year along with our review of LSP which is available to watch locally on Netflix now. We also reviewed ‘Christy’, the latest film from Aussie director David Michôd that stars Sydney Sweeney in the lead role that chronicles the rise of former professional boxer Christy Martin and her incredibly tumultuous life in and outside of the ring, including accepting her sexuality, along with her abusive and coercive relationship with her coach that led to an attempted murder on her life. We also had an encore presentation of an excerpt from our interview from March 2025 with actor Arka Das and the founder of the Indian Film Festival and film producer Mitu Bhowmick Lange to discuss ‘My Melbourne’ which features four unique stories that celebrate diverse voices and talents from four Indian filmmakers who worked with emerging creatives from underrepresented backgrounds to create a multicultural Australian film about identity and belonging based on authentic migrant experiences and is available to watch now on SBS on Demand. This week on Thumb War, we take on Christy (2025), the true-story boxing biopic chronicling the rise — and near-destruction — of trailblazing fighter Christy Martin. Sydney Sweeney delivers a ferocious performance in a film that doesn't flinch from the realities of domestic abuse, control, and isolation, while still honouring Christy's resilience and legacy. Surprisingly, the speakers found themselves enjoying a lighthearted college comedy about cheerleading despite their usual preference for heavier content. The new Peacock mockumentary Stumble follows a protagonist struggling to build a cheerleading squad at Hedleston (a name she can't quite pronounce) with a ragtag group that includes a talented tumbler who happens to have narcolepsy. The lead actress from Claws brings strong comedic timing to the role, and there's even a subplot about her husband, a former football star whose traumatic brain injury causes short-term memory loss, leading to him celebrating his birthday repeatedly.Beyond their lighter viewing, the speakers dove into darker territory with boxing biopic Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney as boxer Christy Martin navigating self-acceptance as a lesbian. They also tackled All Her Fault on Peacock, though they felt the ten-episode length unnecessarily stretched the story. (They really do have strong opinions about bloated miniseries.) The conversation wandered through their week's activities—from working a memorable speed dating event at a bar to winning big at a meat raffle with four steaks, four lobster tails, and stuffed pork chops for just 120 dollars. What entertainment choices define your viewing habits lately?Tune in for their full takes on everything from Kim Kardashian's questionable casting decisions to why some workout classes burn fewer calories than you'd expect.

In a mean spirited, social media post, actress and openly gay Ruby Rose points the finger directly at Sydney Sweeney for “ruining” Sweeney’s latest movie “Christy," a biopic about one of the most prominent figures in the history of boxing, Christy Martin. Martin was a closeted lesbian who survived a murder attempt by her husband, but went on to be inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Rose said Sweeney “paraded around pretending to be us” insinuating because Sweeney is a Republican and straight, she had no right to play the role of Christy, calling her a “cretin” who ruined the film. Sydney Sweeney is one of this generation's biggest stars. Her new film “Christy” tells the story of the trailblazing boxer Christy Martin, who broke into the male dominated world of 1990s prizefighting and became one of the biggest stars in boxing. It may not seem like Sydney — star of the hit teen show “Euphoria” and rom-com “Anyone But You” — would have much in common with Christy. But they both come from small towns, broke into their respective industries without connections, and have backgrounds in combat arts. Sydney joins Tom Power to talk about taking on the role of Christy, the physical transformation she underwent, and how her own background in martial arts influences her life and career.

For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Josh Parham, Joselyn Safadi, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat join me to discuss the latest film from David Michôd, "Christy," starring Sydney Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O'Brian. Based on former professional boxer Christy Martin, the film chronicles Martin's rise to becoming America's most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her abusive relationship with her husband/trainer. The FAA is forcing airlines to cut flights at 40 of the nation's busiest airports due to the government shutdown, global soccer organization FIFA is launching an award to rival the Nobel Peace Prize, and Dr. Oz helped President Trump announce a nationwide weight loss challenge that just doesn't add up. Stephen Colbert leads a special Late Show investigation into the ridiculous federal charges leveled against Sean Dunn after he allegedly threw a salami sandwich at a border patrol agent in Washington, D.C. “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney learned kickboxing and grappling when growing up in Idaho, so she was an ideal choice to portray world champion boxer Christy Martin in the new film, “Christy,” which opens in theaters tomorrow. It's a huge weekend at the movies! Here's what we reviewed for you in the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: PREDATOR: BADLANDS: We were shocked at how much we enjoyed this. It's a blast of a summer popcorn movie, dropped right in the middle of prestige movie season. And you don't need to know much about the Predator franchise going into it. (FYI, some light spoilers here.) In theaters. SENTIMENTAL VALUE: A major awards contender, and possibly the best movie of the year (according to Christy, at least). The latest from director and co-writer Joachim Trier ("The Worst Person in the World") is a moving family drama starring Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve. In theaters. DIE MY LOVE: Jennifer Lawrence absolutely goes for it in this harrowing story of post-partum depression. Director Lynne Ramsay puts Lawrence through the wringer in her role as a new mom navigating the isolation of a Montana farmhouse. Robert Pattinson co-stars as her husband. In theaters. CHRISTY: Of course we had to review this. Sydney Sweeney transforms herself to play Christy Martin, the coal miner's daughter who became a trailblazer in the world of women's boxing. Ben Foster is chilling as her abusive trainer and husband. But this is a pretty standard sports biopic. In theaters. No movie news livestream this week because Christy is traveling. Come back and see us at our YouTube channel next Friday, Nov. 14 at Noon Pacific. Have a great weekend! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
"Christy" is an American biographical sports drama film about the former professional boxer Christy Martin, played by Sydney Sweeney (she also served as one of the film's producers), directed by David Michôd and co-starring Ben Foster. The film chronicles Martin's rise to becoming America's most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her husband's attempt to murder her in 2010. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Sweeney and Foster's performances. Michôd, Sweeney and Foster were all kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on November 7th by Black Bear Pictures. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
