It's been 11 months since we've stepped into the Dojo but we're back...for just this episode lol. Seven years ago we recorded an episode dedicated to women's history month and in 2025 we're coming back to show the ladies in combat sports some more love. This time we both highlight 15 fights each to check out that span across MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing and more. And it wouldn't be an DTP episode if we didn't have some random ramblings. Elsewhere we briefly talk Leon Edwards Vs Sean Brady, ONE 172, and we shout out U-God of Wu-Tang because why not. Thank you guys for still rocking with us after all these years. We hope you enjoy! International boxing hall of famer Christy Martin joined Eoin Sheahan as excitement builds for Katie Taylor's grudge match with Amanda Serrano on Friday night!
Deirdre Gogarty is a true trailblazer of female boxing in Ireland. She was born in 1969 in Drogheda and after watching Barry McGuigan win the world title, decided she wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a world champion boxer. Back in the 1980's female boxing in Ireland was not seen as a viable option for many young girls, but Deirdre was determined to follow her dream. After training in gyms in Drogheda and Dublin, she would eventually have her first and only fight in Ireland back in 1991 in Limerick.Deirdre would decide to uproot her life and move to the States to sign with manager and coach Beau Williford in 1992. After winning 7 contests and drawing 2, Deirdre would lose her first 2 world title attempts against Laura Serrano and Stacy Prestage. After these disappointments an opportunity to fight on a Mike Tyson world title undercard at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas against Christy Martin would change the sport of female boxing forever. In March 1996, Deirdre and Christy went to war for 6 rounds on PPV television and the public's attitude to female boxing would change. Deirdre would eventually claim that illusive world title in 1997 against Bonny Canino in New Orleans. She would get a modest homecoming back home in Drogheda in comparison to todays open top bus parades. Deirdre would inspire so many female boxers around the world and one particular young aspiring boxer would write a letter to her hero in the late 1990's. That young girl was Katie Taylor who would become the icon that she is today. After retiring from boxing in 1998, Deirdre would coach for over 20 years and is now happily settled with her family in Louisiana. In March this year a statue of Deirdre was unveiled in her hometown of Drogheda to honor her achievements and is a permanent reminder that the woman who was forced to leave her hometown and country to pursue her dreams never has to leave again...

Illuminating Hope welcomes former professional boxer Christy Martin! Martin founded Christy's Champs. Christy's Champs is a growing movement of leaders who work to ensure those who suffer emotional and physical abuse in their families have an outlet to receive the education and support that they need to report, share and overcome violence and live a life free of threats, blackmail, shame and fear. Christy's Book: Fighting for Survival: My Journey through Boxing Fame, Abuse, Murder, and Resurrection https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Survival-Journey-through-Resurrection/dp/1538153580If you were riveted by the Netflix documentary Untold: Deal with the Devil, find out Christy Martin's whole story in this fascinating autobiography. Boxing legend Christy Martin was a trailblazer in the ring and continues to be an inspiration to female fighters across the globe. She is without a doubt the most important woman in the history of female combat sports. But behind the scenes Martin was in a losing battle, unable to express her true sexual identity and struggling to survive sexual and domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. In Fighting for Survival: My Journey through Boxing Fame, Abuse, Murder, and Resurrection, Christy Martin recounts her harrowing yet inspiring story. Growing up in a small town in West Virginia, Martin felt forced to keep her sexual orientation hidden to please her family and the sports world, eventually agreeing to a sham marriage with coach Jim Martin. While she rose to prominence in the world of boxing, Martin was secretly contending with substance abuse, domestic violence, and an attempted murder by her husband, who left her to die on their bedroom floor. Fighting for Survival reveals how Martin battled back to life from her near-death experience, how she overcame abuse, violence, addiction, and 40 years of living in the closet, and how she turned her pain into victory and debasement into triumph. Her story is one of hope and self-belief, an inspiration for anyone struggling to break the chain of abuse or who fears to be open about their sexual orientation. It is more than the story of a boxing champion; it is the story of a survivor. We're back and chatting about yet another excellent episode of Netflix's Untold series. This time, we enter the purgatory to discuss the insanely tumultuous highs and lows of Christy Martin's boxing career and personal life in Deal with the Devil. The title itself is quite revealing: it overtly hints at the Faustian bargain Christy made by marrying her wickedly abusive/controlling real-life trainer/promoter/coach Jim Martin. It also obliquely acknowledges the fact that she not only entered into a partnership with this devilish figure, but that she "dealt" with him: even surviving Jim's very visceral attempt to take her life. Christy Martin's story is truly one-of-a-kind. Hailing from a small, backcountry mining town in West Virginia, she becomes a worldwide phenomenon after a bludgeoning, broken-nose performance on a Tyson card at MGM Grand. Soon, she's being picked up by late-night TV shows, placed on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and promoted by Don King. She also ends up playing a homophobic heel (despite being a closet lesbian), becoming addicted to cocaine, and getting into a life-or-death scuffle (replete with stab wounds, gun shots, and battered skulls) with her furious husband/boxing coach. Described as having a stone chin, Christy's resilience and stamina is unrivaled. She is a fighter in every sense of the word and this episode is a testament to the wild, admirable, and unbelievable story of her life: both inside and outside of the boxing ring. Enjoy!
Described as one of the most influential female boxers of all time, helping legitimize women's participation in the sport, Christy Martin shocked the world by becoming a superstar after winning a blood-soaked undercard match at the Mike Tyson/Frank Bruno fight in 1996. Christy Martin was a trailblazer as the first great female boxing champ. But her life outside the ring may be even more inspirational. After her meteoric rise, Christy's had an incredible fight for survival both in and out of the ring as she battled substance abuse, domestic violence and a harrowing brush with death. We also see Christy's struggle with her sexual orientation and her journey of self-discovery. This is a story stranger than fiction, that must be seen to be believed.Christy became the first female boxer inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. In total, she has been inducted into six Halls of Fame, including the International Boxing Hall of Fame. She has appeared on “Leno”, “Letterman”, “Good Morning America,” the “Today” show, and others.Christy is the CEO of Christy Martin Promotions, a boxing promotion company, and is the founder of Christy's Champs, an organization that supports victims of domestic abuse. Following her retirement, Christy also worked as a substitute teacher and as a domestic violence victim's advocate. In 2017 she married former ring rival and world champion boxer Lisa Holewyne.________FOLLOW THE FREEDOM FIRST PODCASTYOUTUBE | The Freedom First Podcast YouTubeINSTAGRAM | @freedomfirstusaTWITTER | https://twitter.com/freedomfirstusTIK TOK | https://www.tiktok.com/@freedomfirstamericaFACEBOOK | FacebookAPPLE PODCAST | Apple PodcastSPOTIFY | The Freedom First Podcast on SpotifyListen on any podcasting platform. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleagues Chris Baldwin of the WAAR Room and Malissa Smith of Girlboxing on the WAAR Room. A video of this discussion has also been posted on the WAAR Sports YouTube page. We spoke with them by Zoom Monday, June 27. The scandal-drenched International Boxing Association (IBA) made headlines again last week, and not for anything positive. At their Executive Board meeting, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not only confirmed that their suspension of IBA stands, but also that IBA would not be allowed to organize the boxing competition and qualification events for the 2024 Paris Olympics. They cited numerous failures of IBA, especially in the area of governance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had ruled that, in their recent presidential election, IBA's exclusion of Dutch Boxing Federation President Boris van der Vorst, who was running against incumbent IBA President Umar Kremlev of Russia, was unwarranted, as well as the exclusion of four reformers who were running for the IBA's Board of Directors. So far, IBA claims that they will consider holding a new presidential election in a few months, but has said nothing about holding a new election for their Board of Directors. The IOC has also raised the issue about IBA's failure to properly prepare for the 2024 Olympic qualifying events including no host city contracts being signed, the lack of a sufficient number of qualified referees and judges, and IBA's continued financial dependence on the Russian state-controlled Gazprom energy giant. "Enough was enough," said IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell at the press conference. Thus, for the second Olympics in a row, IBA has been stripped of the right to organize the boxing competition, with the IOC set to devise a plan to do so themselves. Boxing also remains excluded from the program for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the possibility that boxing will no longer be an Olympic sport looking likelier as time goes on. Also, Malissa Smith discussed the latest women's boxing news, including Jessica McCaskill's successful defense of her undisputed welterweight ttile, and Christy Martin's new book. Off a weekend that saw heavyweight Daniel Dubois capture the WBA secondary heavyweight title, Jaime Munguia stay unbeaten and Edgar Berlanga do the same, but not without trying a "bite night sequel" moment., we're ready to recap it all on "Fight Freak Unite Recap" Podcast. Host T.J. Rives is back with bigfightweekend.com insider Dan Rafael to go over it all. First, Dan has thoughts on the Sunday International Hall of Fame induction of great fighters like: Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Andre Ward, Miguel Cotto, Layla Ali and Christy Martin, plus, numerous other contributors to the sport. Then, T.J. and Dan talk Dubois' KO of Trevor Bryan in Miami on the Don King promoted fight card and what we learned from it? Plus, where is Dubois headed next after his win giving him the WBA's belt? Next, middleweight Jaime Munguia is a topic of conversation after his KO win over a little known Brit Jimmy Kelly in Anaheim, CA. on the Golden Boy show. Did Munguia help or hurt himself, despite scoring the knockout? And, most importantly, Dan wants to know if he's fighting a legitimate championship caliber fighter sometime soon? Finally, the discussion turns to super middleweight Edgar Berlanga and his win in Top Rank's New York main event. Berlanga scored a deserved decision win, but also bit opponent Alexis Angulo. Dan gives his thoughts on what he saw and whether it's a big or small blemish on Berlanga, now. And, what does the fact that he hasn't knocked out any of his last four opponents mean? Hear it all on the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We spoke with them by Zoom Sunday, February 13. In every generation, there are big super fights, to be made for men and women in the sport. There was the fight between Laila Ali and Jacqui Frazier-Lyde as the main event on a pay-per-view card on June 8, 2001, in a big tent erected at the Turning Stone Casino outside of Canastota, New York. While Bob Arum, yes, that Bob Arum, did not have a particular hand in that fight, he did try to promote the "Million Dollar Lady" super-fight between Christy Martin and Lucia Rijker in 2005. This wad meant to capitalize on Clint Eastwood's Oscar winning film, "Million Dollar Baby" starring Hilary Swank. Martin and Rijker were to have been guaranteed a $250,000 purse a piece. They were also both past the prime of their careers, but there'd been a rivalry that began to brew in the late-1990s, and it was the fight fans wanted to see, perhaps only eclipsed by the dream of pairing Laila Ali and Ann Wolfe. In the end, Rijker had to pull out of the fight due to a torn achilles tendon, which turned out to be career ending. Ever the "champion" for women's boxing -- not -- Bob Arum was less than stellar about Rijker's injury, having done a lousy job of promoting the fight in the first place and seeming to blame the women for what was reported to be anemic ticket sales. Arum's early forays in women's boxing extend all the way back to the late 1970s. He felt very burned by the experience, and in 1987 went on record to state that women's boxing is "ridiculous," and how he'd sworn that he'd never promote another women's bout. He did go on to promote women's boxing champion Lucia Rijker in the late 1990s, and a few years later, Mia St. John. A martial artist, St. John's trademark was "hot pink" to distinguish herself from Christy Martin's baby pink. She gained popularity fighting on Oscar De La Hoya fight cards on pay-per-view in the early 2000s. And of course, fast forward to 2022, and Bob Arum is still at it denigrating female prize fighters while promoting yet another champion female boxer. The Taylor-Serrano main event super fight on April 30, 2022, in the main room at Madison Square Garden, demonstrates just how far the sport has come in terms of popularity and respect. It is, however, only the beginning. Bob Arum's open disdain for female achievements in the sport may be treated as being anachronistic, but the truth is he is not alone in his thinking. One need only look at the fight cards on mainstream boxing media in the United States, to see how much further there is to go. Episode 101 Notes and Links to Mia St. John's Work On Episode 101 of The Chills at Will Podcast, Pete welcomes Mia St. John, and the two talk about her upbringing, being a victim of racism, her private battles as a youth and her moving around a lot as a youth, her resolve in becoming a world-champion boxer, how her childhood shaped her boxing prowess, the highs and lows of high-level boxing, and the grief and love she has experienced, especially in recent years, which she has channeled into in becoming an advocate for mental health. The two discuss these topics and more through the prism of her recently-published memoir, Fighting for my Life: A Memoir about A Mother's Loss and Grief. Mia St. John was born in San Francisco, California. Her fighting career started soon after, at the age of six, competing in Tae Kwon Do. Mia earned a black belt and received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from California State University of Northridge in June of '94. In 1996, Mia decided to pursue her true passion full-time, the sport of combat. Valentines Day, 1997, Mia made her pro-debut in boxing, knocking out her opponent in fifty-four seconds into the first round. Mia signed with Don King and stayed with him for a year and a half before she left King for his rival Bob Arum of Top Rank. At Top Rank, Mia spent four years opening for all of Oscar De La Hoya's major fights. Mia has fought all over the world, including Beijing, China, where she won her IBA Championship. After accumulating an unheard of boxing record of nearly 60 pro fights, on June 14th, 2008, Mia fulfilled her dream of fighting in her mother's home country of Mexico. She fought one of the toughest fights of her career and became the WBC International Boxing Champion of the World at the age of 40. In November of 2010, Rep. Grace F. Napolitano joined Mia and LA Laker Ron Artest for an official mental health and suicide prevention training at Napolitano's district office in Santa Fe Springs. Artest and St. John have joined Napolitano to promote the Mental Health in Schools Act, legislation she authored which would increase federal funding for mental health therapists in schools. She also spoke at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, where President Barack Obama made a riveting speech at the CHCI's annual Gala. As well as Congress, Mia speaks in schools and juvenile halls on the importance of education and overcoming hardship. She speaks of her own battles with mental illness, addiction, poverty and overcoming it all, to become a three time international boxing champion. On August 14th, 2012, Mia fought Christy Martin in a long awaited rematch. Her dream of sixteen years finally materialized and at the age of 45, she captured the WBC Super Welter Weight Championship of the World. Described as one of the most influential female boxers of all time, helping legitimize women's participation in the sport, Christy Martin shocked the world by becoming a superstar after winning a blood-soaked undercard match at the Mike Tyson/Frank Bruno fight in 1996. Growing up in a small town in West Virginia, Martin was a popular standout athlete, and as she began to win her first amateur fights, she struggled with being open about her sexual orientation, choosing to keep her relationships with women secret. She later found a coach in Jim Martin, a professional boxing trainer who, despite his initial skepticism about “women's boxing,” signed on to help train her. They would later become romantically involved, despite their 20-year-plus age difference. After landing on Don King's radar, Martin, under the moniker “The Coal Miner's Daughter,” experienced a meteoric rise, including the cover of Sports Illustrated, breaking pay-per-view records in women's boxing along the way. The fall from that height was steep and included substance abuse, domestic violence and a harrowing brush with death. Martin reveals how she battled back to level ground and a content personal life, which now includes an induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Additional interviewees include Mike Tyson, Laila Ali, Martin's family, and convicted attempted murderer Jim Martin speaks for the first time since his imprisonment.
