What happens when women bring traditional folklore into the horror genre and subvert it? You get award-winning feature length films, Iranian vampires and Mayan werewolves to name a few examples. Ella Al-Shamahi is joined by Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour and Mexican filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero to discuss how to create horror on screen.Ana Lily Amirpour's award-winning debut feature film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is a Persian-language Western-horror. It follows a skateboarding vampire who wears a chador and haunts the fictional Iranian ghost-town of Bad City. Feminist readings have interpreted the vampire as a vigilante who preys on men that disrespect women. Ana's later films have included big stars such as Kate Hudson, Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves.Gigi Saul Guerrero is known by fans as La Muñeca Del Terror, which means The Horror Babe. She gained recognition for La Quinceañera, a horror series based on the Mexican traditional celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday. Her film Culture Shock follows a Mexican woman who crosses the border into the US in hope of finding the American dream. What she finds instead is an American nightmare. Gigi's work often draws from Mesoamerican folklore and Mexican tradition. Producer: Elena Angelides(Image: Gigi Saul Guerrero. Credit: Luchagore Productions. And Ana Lily Amirpour.

This week Drusilla and Josh watch the world's only Iranian feminist vampire wester, Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Hone Alone at Night (2014). Promoted as "The first Iranian vampire Western", it stars Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Mozhan Marnò, Marshall Manesh, and Dominic Rains. 2014's A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, was promoted as The first Iranian Vampire Western, although when I have been describing it to people I've said it's the first Iranian Skateboarding Vampire Western. It's in black and white, all the dialogue is in Farsi, and there's a skateboarding vampire. Kevin and Mike talk about the film, artsy vampire movies, and spend more time than is probably necessary on a tangent about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Happy spooky season, y'all!
Episode 274. We watched the 2014 black and white Iranian skateboarding vampire romance A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, from writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour. In the lonely town of Bad City, Iran, a young man working to pay off his father's debt to a local drug dealer encounters a mysterious girl who stalks the city at night, preying upon its oppressors. We discuss the mix of genres from spaghetti western to teen coming-of-age romance, how exciting a very slow scene can be, and how we wish there was even more skateboarding.00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:04 - Welcome and banter 00:03:16 - Spoiler free thoughts: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night 00:15:13 - Housekeeping 00:19:10 - Spoilers!! hello listeners! first i come to you with news of The Lavender Menace match making service currently live on the Patreon! SINGLES/NON-MONOG ONLY!!! also butches please fill out the form... the numbers are in your favor right now.episode 15 of season 4 was filmed in december 2022 and is a part of the collection of Sunnaissance IRL video content. we respond to a hot take that references The Will to Change by bell hooks and the necessity of communicating with men. we return to the question of how to decenter men without falling into the fallacies of lesbian separatism (a really good question). then we respond to a hot take about bisexual people not having a slur and also the bi vs pan distinction when moving in online spaces.our shared media portion of the episode is the Céline Sciamma directed film Petite Maman (2022). we were very excited to talk about this movie because we got to watch it on the big screen together in a theater to ourselves. we find ourselves at the beautiful intersection of Sunny's love for speculative fiction and Renaissance's love for French Romanticism (psst... read Renaissance's Taylor Swift x Romanticism essay on substack). it should not be a surprise that our passions overlap in a movie about mother-daughter relationships. a classic motif of the reviewed content here.like usual, we end the episode recommending each other pieces of media. Renaissance recommends A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. It is a contemporary Iranian noir vampire film with a proclivity for showing feminist acts of violence. (yay!!) Sunny references The Never Learn by Layne Fargo in response to the film. Sunny recommends the (FRENCH) graphic novel Thieves by Lucie Bryon. "It's kind of like Heartstopper if it was French and for girls" - Sunny describing the book.hope you enjoy this episode!PatreonTwitterYoutube

Long time friend Danny joins Caitlin to cover 2014's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. It's a feminist favorite, and it uses vampirism to explore addiction and subversion. It also has a killer soundtrack. Who wouldn't love a black-and-white movie about a chador-wearing, skateboarding vampire who stalks bad guys and plays good music? We also talk about what's going on Iran currently, and we have a lot of fun with the fan-submitted questions. Thanks, as always, for sending those in!

“It's so fun to be bad.” Spooky season continues with filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour, who talks to Gemma and Slim about her four favorite films—American Psycho, Death Becomes Her, Gremlins, The NeverEnding Story—and the makings of her latest feature Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon and her episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Plus: how Ana Lily got Keanu Reeves to sport a ‘stache (and why he paid for his own wig in The Bad Batch), the saddest scene in all of cinema history, the deep and psychedelic qualities of Everything Everywhere All at Once, crushing on Atreyu, how to care for your psychic health when you are a filmmaker, how Mary Harron nailed her American Psycho adaptation, the story behind the gorgeous poster for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Gemma's love for Kate Micucci, Slim's love for Kate Hudson, Ana Lily's love for hard lighting, why we've been watching movies all wrong, the intelligence of comedians, making sure there are snacks in the story, walking red carpets with your dog, the genius of Robert Zemeckis, peak Rossellini, and is Gizmo a symbol of consumerism or cinephile pin-up? #hopefordweebs Credits: This episode was recorded in Los Angeles, Auckland and Pennsylvania, and edited by Slim. Dystopian societies appear in many artistic works, most notably in stories set in a future time period. A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain. Equilibrium is a 2002 American dystopian science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, and starring Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. The film follows John Preston (Christian Bale), an enforcement officer in a future in which feelings and artistic expression are outlawed and citizens take daily injections of powerful psychoactive drugs to suppress their emotions. After accidentally missing a dose, Preston begins to experience emotions, which makes him question his morality and moderate his actions while attempting to remain undetected by the suspicious society in which he lives. Ultimately, he aids a resistance movement using advanced martial arts, which he was taught by the regime he is helping to overthrow. Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita in English). It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Rosa Salazar stars through performance-capture animation as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson star in supporting roles. The Bad Batch is a 2016 American dystopian thriller film directed and written by Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is about a young woman (Suki Waterhouse) exiled to a desert where she is attacked by a group of cannibals (led by Jason Momoa), barely escaping alive to a bizarre settlement run by a charismatic leader (Keanu Reeves). Other actors include Jim Carrey, Giovanni Ribisi, and Diego Luna. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was released in theaters on June 23, 2017, by Neon. www.wyrdrealities.net follow us on social linktr.ee/wyrdrealities --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/support
What do a vampire, a pregnant lady, a pious nurse, a film censor, and an urban legend have in common? They're the main characters that appear in the final part of our trilogy of episodes focusing on women horror directors. Get ready for some fresh new blood, as we discuss five movies from the past ten years!I don't know about you, but if I lived in a place called Bad City, I may not be too excited to be out walking alone at night. Of course, if I were a vampire, I would probably be a lot more confident about it. Which just happens to be the case in Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014).Not having the personal experience, I cannot be certain, but it seems like pregnancy might make me want to kill people, just in general. But her unborn child is actually very demanding about Ruth knocking off certain people. I guess that it probably just doesn't feel right telling her no. Which leads to a little Prevenge (2016), from writer, director, star Alice Lowe.Maud seems like a responsible, polite caregiver. As long as you don't mind that she gets a little hung up on saving your soul. And she might have a history of doing things that are somewhat unhinged. Filmmaker Rose Glass introduces us to Saint Maud (2019)Ah, the video nasty era. The perfect setting for a horror movie about a film censor. But Enid cannot seem to let go of a tragic event from her past. It's an obsession that leads her down a path of self-destruction in Prano Bailey-Bond's Censor (2021).Didn't we talk about this guy before? We sure did! But this is a totally different guy. Director Nia DaCosta lets us in on a little secret. That a number of unfortunate souls have been cursed to fill this role. Try your best to stay away from mirrors! And definitely don't say Candyman (2021) five times!

What an amazing time having a chat with the incredible Ana Lily Amirpour. British-born American film director, producer, actor, writer and editor for her critically acclaimed films "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" (starring Sheila Vand and Arash Marandi), "The Bad Batch" (starring Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves) and up coming film "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" (starring Kate Hudson, Ed Skrein, Craig Robinson and Jun Jong Seo). Her film "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" (2014) was described as "the first Iranian vampire spaghetti western" premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and won awards such as the Revelations Prize in 2014, the Carnet Jove Jury Award, nominated for the Halekulani Golden Orchid award at the Hawaii International Film Festival and Lily has since been called "the next Tarantino" by VICE creative director Eddy Moretti. Basically she is an absolute BAD ASS creating the most INCREDIBLE pieces of art. Her next film "The Bad Batch" (2016) is to this day one of my favourite films and in 2016 won the Special Jury Prize at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival where it premiered (an absolute must watch!) I have been a HUGE fan of her work since I fell in love with The Bad Batch a few years back, and am waiting excitedly for her up and coming project releasing soon, "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon". Lily thank you for coming on the show and giving me your time and knowledge, I am immensely inspired by you and your work. Instagram Ana Lily Amirpour Joshua Eady

In this episode, hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca discuss the 2014 American Persian-language horror/Western film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Episode Highlights: We examine how the film constructs the power of the Girl and turns the concept of monstrosity on its head by having the Girl embody many traditionally passive, feminine behaviors. We explore the ways that the film engages in spaces and identities that are liminal, hybrid, and at the margins. We talk about the background of and interviews with the director/writer Ana Lily Amirpour and how this film fits into a larger narrative about Iranian Diaspora. And we look at how the film uses the chader as both mask and cape, to create a narrative about women, hunger, and power. A Dose of Scholarship: We look at the 2015 Electric Sheep interview with Ana Lily Amirpour; Jude Ellison S. Doyle's 2017 Medium piece on "Hunger: Female Directors and the Rise of Girl-Cannibal Horror;" Emily Edwards' article "Searching for a Room of One's Own: Rethinking the Iranian Diaspora in 'Persepolis,' 'Shahs of Sunset,' and "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night';" Zahra Khosroshahi's "Vampires, Jinn and the Magical in Iranian Horror Films" in Frames Cinema Journal; and Shadee Abdi and Bernadette Marie Calafell "Queer Utopias and a (Feminist) Iranian Vampire: A Critical Analysis of Resistive Monstrosity in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night." It's episode 200 of the Saturday Matinée! A fine how-do-you-do to that. Thanks to everyone who has made our weekend romp so much fun these past four years! We start with Mandy mad at Steve about Martin. Steve attempt to retaliate by defending his position on 'Below Decks' to a woman who counts among her many interests, 'The Housewives'. It goes about as well as you can imagine. Trailers this week run the gamut: Our A24 entry puts Denzel in the middle of The Scottish Play adapted and directed by mono-Coen. Pete brings a nightmare circus staring the subject of his very one-sided friendship, Bradly Cooper. And did you forget Spielberg is don't that one Sondheim thing? He is. Pete starts a bidding war cataloging how many principle characters Mandy and Steve can remember from past US prime time hits.THE LIST: Save the Cat!Blake Snyder was a screenwriter who wrote Stop or My Mom will Shoot and Blank Check in the 90s. He also wrote the book Save the Cat: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need in which he coined the phrase that describes the decisive moment the protagonist demonstrates that they are worth rooting for, the moment in which they save the proverbial cat. It's a controversial concept that has grown in popularity to the point that the Save the Cat 15 beat structure has shaped many Hollywood blockbusters of an age. And, since we have a perfect Save the Cat moment in Ana Lily Amirpour's 2014 film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, members voted that we talk all about the same moments in other films. But we're cheeky, so this list is largely full of saving actual cats, not metaphorical cats, and also we pet a dog.Steve's List Casablanca Bright Alien Pete's List Thor Keanu Superman Mandy's List Oliver!
