Just when we think it's been a quiet week, the internet proves us wrong. A TikTok comedian has gotten answers to the questions many journo's have been asking of Baz Luhrmann, streetside in Sydney. Alec and Hilaria Baldwin have launched a new reality TV show about their lives (in strange timing...), and the Tillies squad has been announced for the Paris Olympics. It feels like it's been a bit of a pile on for J Lo lately, and it speaks to a whole lot more than poor ticket sales. Why is women's ambition so misunderstood? Meanwhile, it's a big week for shoes, as Rupert Murdoch keeps it casual on his wedding day and Miley elevates her treadmill time with some slingbacks. Gaslit Nation is recharging our batteries for the big election ahead so we're re-running a popular episode this week: Andrea's interview with her longtime friend and mentor, the journalist, filmmaker, and author Nelson George. Exclusively for our Patreon community we're publishing an all new bonus show this Saturday on how to stop MAGA. To our supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher, submit your questions for our Q&A in the comments below or in a private message -- we always love hearing from you! Our Q&A will be out later this month! Thank you to everyone who supports the show -- we could not make Gaslit Nation without you!     Nelson George set off to become the greatest music writer in the world. In this surreal essay, he explains his strange relationship with Prince who summoned him to listen to new music; this confirms George's dream was achieved. Having come out of the projects in Brooklyn to contribute to the bohemian renaissance of Spike Lee turning Brooklyn into a global brand, George lived the explosion of Black culture across film, music, art, and more at the close of the 20th century and looks back at this groundbreaking time in a sweeping and important discussion of why art matters.     This is an interview about artists -- it's for people who want to be artists -- it's for artists at all stages of their careers -- it's for people who love and consume art -- it's a discussion about the value of mentorship -- and the way to get to the heart of being an artist, why that's important, what that means, the practical ins and outs of how to do it.     From the biography on his website: "Nelson George is the author of several histories of African American music, including Where Did Our Love Go: the Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound, The Death of Rhythm & Blues, and the classic Hip Hop America. He has published two collections of music journalism: Buppies, BBoys, Baps & Bohos: Notes on Post-Soul America and the recent The Nelson George Mixtape, which is available through Pacific Books. He has written several novels with music themes (The Accidental Hunter, The Plot Against Hip Hop, The Lost Treasures of R&B, and To Funk and Die in LA). In television, George was a producer on the Emmy Award winning The Chris Rock Show on HBO, a producer on Hip Hop Honors on VH1, and executive producer of the American Gangster crime series on BET. As a filmmaker, George has co-written the screenplays to Strictly Business and CB4. He directed Queen Latifah to a Golden Globe in the HBO film Life Support, which he also co-wrote. He has directed a number of documentaries including Finding the Funk, The Announcement, and Brooklyn Boheme (Showtime). George was a producer on the award winning documentary on Black music executive Clarence Avant, The Black Godfather, for Netflix. His theatrical documentary on ballerina Misty Copeland is called A Ballerina's Tale. He was a writer/producer on Baz Lurhmann's hip hop inspired Netflix series The Get Down. He is an executive producer of Dear Mama, a documentary series about Tupac Shakur directed by Allen Hughes." And, to add to this illustrious biography, Nelson has been a longtime friend and mentor who helped Andrea navigate the wily world of getting Mr. Jones written and produced.     Fight for your mind! 30 years ago this year, a small independent film, by a first time director, and an unknown cast, hit our screens. That film was Strictly Ballroom. And so, for our final episode of Season 2 of Talking Pointes, I'm speaking with the legendary Paul Mercurio. Paul was born in Swan Hill in regional Victoria and started dancing after he saw his elder sister in a local dance class. With dad off the scene early, the family moved to Perth where Paul continued to train at the John Curtin Senior High School as it was known then, before, at 18, being accepted in the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. But in a rebel move, he joined Sydney Dance Company before graduating, it was the golden era of Graeme Murphy's directorship. It was a position he held for ten years, as a principal dancer, muse and choreographer. During his later years Sydney Dance Company, Paul received a call from an unknown director called Baz Lurhmann who asked him to help choreograph on a dance film. It was a call that changed his life. In this wonderfully honest interview, Paul talks about his early years in dance, his “angry man” years as he calls them—where he wrote poetry, smoked weed, and rode motorbikes. We also talk about how Strictly Ballroom came to be, the behind the scene, and how the film changed his life. Finally we talk new careers, raising a family, and his plans for making a more inclusive community in his local area.Paul and I recorded remotely, with Paul dialling in from Melbourne on the land of the Kulin people.

In covering the entire scope of Elvis Presley's career, ELVIS defies certain biopic conventions while embracing others, but it's as distinctively a film by Baz Lurhmann as MOULIN ROUGE. Like that 2001 musical, ELVIS expands the frame of history in an attempt to recreate the earth-shattering effects of a moment in culture, while also poking at some of the uncomfortable questions raised by Presley's popularity. It offers much to discuss, which we do before bringing MOULIN ROUGE into the conversation to compare the two films' shared interest in the tension between art and commerce, to what effect anachronisms are used in each, and how each attempts to toe the line between appropriation and homage. Plus, some recommendations from Keith for supplementary Elvis viewing and reading.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about MOULIN ROUGE, ELVIS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more.  Show Notes Works cited:  • “Can Elvis Rise Again” by David Browne (rollingstone.com) • “Nobody Cares About Elvis Anymore” by Will Leitch (williamflietch.medium.com) Outro music: Elvis Presley, “Unchained Melody” Next Pairing: Werner Herzog's GRIZZLY MAN and Sara Dosa's FIRE OF LOVE Learn more about your ad choices. Is Elvis the King of Rock and Roll? He disputed that (maybe, probably, when he was sober) himself I suppose. He was also so many things to so many people - and in the case of the two movies we have to talk about here in this new VERSUS episode of the Wages of Cinema, where we watch the slightly obscure John Carpenter (!) directed ELVIS starring Kurt Russell and Season Hubley (as Priscilla) and the new Baz Lurhmann directed biopic of the same name starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks (as Colonel Tom Parker, who was neither a Colonel nor a Tom nor a Parker), it still may be unsettled. What isn't unsettled for us is the lack of the Fool's Gold Sandwich! And apparently Elvis had a pet monkey named Scatter?? We didn't even get to that in the episode! Maybe The real Fool's Gold are the friends we met along the way.... Oh, and did you know Elvis played a character as an actor once called.... John Carpenter? Wild world... Anyway, here is the review, spoilers abound for both films so don't listen if you don't want to know what happened to Elvis, oh, wait... But seriously, watch the movies first. Maybe, if you want. Movies are good, thank you, very much (Jack does the Elvis lip, which he could do since he was a tiny child, but we digress). wagesofcinema@gmail.com

Venga, a bailar

From the sets, to the casting, the costumes, the soundtrack.. it's been 26 years since a baby-faced Leo and Claire captured our hearts with their ill-fated romance and we get stuck into why no other Shakespeare retelling holds a candle to this film. The movie has loads of covers so we just concentrate on the overall performances and then drill down into the 2 big hits. First up is "Lady Marmalade" with its star-studded team up of Mya, P!nk, Lil' Kim, Christina Aguilera & Missy Elliot. Then we move on to the movie's only original song "Come What May" by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
