The Simply Vegan Podcast is bought to you by the UK's only vegan magazine, Vegan Food & Living. Hosted by magazine editor Holly Johnson, join us on the first Thursday of each month as we chat to some of the inspirational people helping to grow the vegan movement – from chefs and influencers to athletes and doctors. In today's feel-good episode, we're joined by the founder of VEGAN Happy, Lorri Delahunty. Lorri shares the lightbulb moment she went from meat lover to vegan within just a few hours, having watched videos by animal rights activists Gary Yourovsky and Joey Carbstrong. We discuss different forms of activism, and whether there's a polarisation in the movement between those who think activism can't change anything and those compelled to act. Lorri explains how she set up her clothing line to get people talking about veganism and the all-important issues with our food systems, animal welfare, the environment and our health and why she believes it's so important to be kind and support people rather than judge them.Lorri also chats about the recent Face of VEGAN Happy competition, judged by singer Heather Small, Viva!'s Juliet Gellatley and Vegan Food & Living's Holly Johnson and how it's created a community of like-minded people who want to see a kinder, more compassionate world.Notes from today's episode and ways to support us and the vegan movement• Watch Gary Yourovsky's speech on YouTube• Watch Joey Carbstrong's activism on YouTube• Check out the range of subtle vegan clothing at VEGAN Happy• Visit The Farm Animal Sanctuary • Leave us a review and share this episode with friends• Try an issue of Vegan Food and Living magazine for just 99p at veganfoodandliving.com/podcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. After leaving the gang life and going vegan for ethical reasons, Joey Carbstrong wanted to give back. “I wanted to help the less fortunate. I wanted to help human beings which is still one of my passions. But I had a realisation. There were a group of innocent beings who needed my help the most. A group of beings who weren't even recognised by society as victims. A group of beings so persecuted, so exploited and so abused that it dwarfed any human genocide in comparison. The animals were screaming out for help and very few were listening. So I decided to answer their calls and began speaking for them with all my heart.” In episode eight of “Activist” Joey Carbstrong shares his brilliant insights and advice for how we can all become better advocates for the animals, and how we can each start our activism journey. Co-host Gareth describes this episode as “All killer, no filler” (in a very vegan way)! Joey has a wonderful wealth of knowledge and we are very excited to share it all with you.

This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! This week, Evy speaks to full time activist and animal rights speaker, Joey Carbstrong, about his direct, no-nonsense style of activism. Joey talks about how his early life as part of a gang influenced his bold and confrontational approach to speaking up for the voiceless, and how he remains unperturbed by criticism when he focuses on his core mission of achieving animal liberation. Also on this episode... Joey recounts the time in his life as a gang member, and how a particularly depressing stint in prison prompted a total lifestyle overhaul, and eventually his vegan awakening. How Joey left his gang and found his calling in animal rights activism. How one-on-one street activism can have the greatest impact as an activist. ‘The people who say animals are killed humanely, they haven't ever witnessed what happens inside a slaughterhouse. They're talking merely off of their indoctrination and what they're told.' Joey talks about his experiences in slaughterhouses as being some of ‘the most horrific experiences' of his life. His mindset for dealing with the verbal and online abuse that comes with being a confrontational activist. Joey explains how to avoid ever being ‘stumped' by an anti-vegan argument in a debate. How to focus and conserve one's energy for activism: ‘I don't let anyone get inside my head to try to make me feel guilty for standing up for animals, no matter who it is.' What to say to people who accuse vegans of caring more about animals than humans. Do hardcore vegan activists want people working in the animal agricultural industry to go out of business, or evolve with the plant based food system? Joey explains how he takes a more forceful approach and how Gary Yourofsky's direct speeches about animal abuse was what he needed to hear to go vegan. ‘People need to be held accountable for their contribution to something that is horrific.' Robbie and Evy talk about the c-word and how we can discuss the original source of the virus, as being the consumption of wild animals, without shaming and angering people. This week is the Australian born animal rights activist Joey Carbstrong. Joey and I discussed in great detail his life as a gang member, the moment he turned his life around. We also touched on topics such as the use of words like "murder, rape and Holocaust' when used in the context of animals and much more. Despite Joey's background, he says his style of activism is non-confrontational and places an emphasis on being polite and respectful. The campaigner feels strongly about what he sees as the responsibility of all vegans to be active participants in furthering the movement. “When you become a vegan, you're realising you've been causing harm to innocent beings and you've tried your best as far as practical to stop causing harm. But that is a neutral position; it doesn't mean you're doing something fantastic, it just means you've stopped doing something horrific or contributing to something that's horrific. Joey Carbstrong is a popular animal activist and vegan advocate that came from a past of gang violence and drug abuse. Through an interest of living a healthy lifestyle, he was able to change his reality for the better. He later became vegan and learned about the truth on how diet impacts other living beings. He now uses his YouTube channel to speak up about the animals and aspires to inspire others to embrace compassion for all life. In this episode, Joey talks about his past and where he came from and how he found veganism. He also goes into what it takes to be an animal activist and the toll it can take on those who are activists. This conversation goes deep and is meant for those who have empathy in their heart for the animals.
When Tammi moved to Yangon several years ago, she started a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) club in her own apartment after not being able to find one in the city. She eventually joined forces with Jojo & Jerome of Yangon Yoga House and used that space as a gym. That led to them opening Yangon's first 100% vegan restaurant, Nourish Cafe. Now, Tammi recently opened up the brand-new Bangkok branch of Nourish Cafe, which is located on the second floor of Bangkok Fight Lab.
