From The Retreat website: "The Retreat was born in 1989 out of frustration at the way the human race treats animals. A rescue centre which would save tormented, abused, sick, injured and unwanted animals from certain death was therefore founded. Some of our residents include: ex-race horses, ex-riding school ponies, injured live export sheep, cows saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, injured birds, ferrets, Christmas turkeys, worn-out battery hens, disabled non-releasable wildlife, fish, small domestics, old or feral and FIV cats, and dogs who have failed behaviour tests in other dog homes. We offer specialised care for the animals who we take in. We are a not-for-profit organisation and all the Trustees and most of the volunteers being vegan. All funds raised go to the welfare of the animals, being cared for. We also use the funds for The Retreat's facilities and where possible, animals are re-homed in permanent, loving homes. The Retreat operates a genuine no-kill policy. Our site accommodates our main rescue centre and, wildlife hospital to deal with most animal intakes and emergencies, together with our permanent horses, cows and sheep residents. We now have ample room to care for more animals, our intensive and equine re-homing centre, along with care-for-life wildlife and exotics. The number of animals being cared for by The Retreat is over 1,000 at any one time." Finally, they provide information on where to find more resources and information. There is a need to consider the entire ethical process of how products are made and consumed. A look back at a classic episode of The Bloody Vegans Podcast you may have missed first time round. A groundbreaking new documentary, They're Trying to Kill Us, features notable leaders and influencers from the fields of Hip Hop, medicine, sports, entertainment, policy, and politics weighing in on the singular most deadly threat to American society. ABOUT THE FILM Co-directors John Lewis and Keegan Kuhn have teamed up to tell the untold story of the intersections of diet, disease, poverty, institutional racism, food deserts, government corruption and collusion with Big Food and the pharmaceutical industry. The film follows John from his upbringing in Ferguson, Missouri as he crisscrosses the country seeking answers from experts as to why Americans of Color are getting sick and dying from chronic diseases at often twice the rate of white Americans. Along the way he speaks with Hip Hop artists and celebrities of Color who share their own, deeply personal experiences with how the historically poor diets that have been inflicted upon their community have led to a staggeringly high rate of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. CAST The film was co-directed by Keegan Kuhn (What The Health, Cowspiracy) and John Lewis (aka “Badass Vegan”) and features interviews with Hip Hop artists, celebrities and medical professionals such as Ne-Yo, Mya, Dame Dash, Cedric The Entertainer, Maggie Q, New York City Mayoral candidate Eric Adams, and Dr's Milton Mills and Neal Barnard. They're Trying to Kill Us also features exclusive interviews with NBA All-Star Chris Paul and multiple Grammy Award Winner Billie Eilish, who are both Executive Producers on the film. RELEASE DETAILS Eschewing a conventional release plan, They're Trying to Kill Us will be released at 11am EST on November 11 exclusively on the film's website https://www.theyretryingtokillus.com/. The price to download the film is $20. Seeking a more efficient and equitable way to release the movie, the filmmakers are launching what they are calling a “Cooperative Release” of the film, giving participants in the documentary, supporters, and select influencers their own unique URL to the film's purchase page and splitting the profits 50/50 for the first week of release. On the filmmakers' side, they are giving their first $1,000,000 dollars raised directly to charity. ABOUT THE PRODUCERS JOHN LEWIS: Widely known by his social media handle, “Badass Vegan”, John Lewis is notorious for stoking conversations and debate with his critical views and memes on current issues. John has a large social media following and is a much sought-after public speaker and social and health activist who is accustomed to saying what's on his mind. In doing so, audiences have responded to his fresh and unfiltered take on social issues. KEEGAN KUHN: Co-director Keegan Kuhn is best known as the director behind the camera for the award-winning and hugely influential films on Netflix, Cowspiracy (executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio) and What The Health (executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix).

Kellogg's Cornflakes, HUEL shakes, Marmite, Cow & Gate baby formula, Tesco's plain flour, Soreen Bars, Sainsbury's Orange Juice, Oatly Oat Milk, Nutri-Grain Bars, Slimfast… All of these products have one thing in common. They contain synthetic (not natural) vitamins and minerals. What are the synthetic vitamins made of? Do they work like natural vitamins? Are there negative side effects? The clinically proven answers to these questions might surprise you. With £500k of UK government funding - one startup, BIOVIT, and a team of scientists are comparing the effects of synthetic vs plant-derived nutrients. Synthetic nutrients, that are in all fortified foods, which over 80% of us consume daily, have been shown to have limited to no effect, and in some cases increase cancer risk. Recent article in ‘Food Navigator' here The fall out of this could have major impacts on food labelling, nutrition guidance, human health, and food production sustainability. With Governments globally being lobbied by companies such as Safe Food Advocacy Europe on broader use of synthetic ingredients, it's only a matter of time before all certified natural and plant based foods are banned from using synthetic nutrients for good. SAFE's campaign here. The vitamins lurking in your everyday corn flakes are not the wholesome nutrients nature intended, instead, they are lab-made vitamin analogues, often made using unsettling ingredients such as coal tar, cattle brains, and a cocktail of harmful chemicals. These artificial impostors, known as 'synthetic nutrients,' are not identical to natural nutrients. They are missing essential enzymes and cofactors required for absorption and use by the body, and there is a growing body of clinical research that indicates they do not work and may even increase the risk of cancer. Highly regarded website Healthline outlines key differences between synthetic and natural nutrients, and lists a large body of evidence showing adverse health effects. “Synthetic nutrients from supplements and fortified foods may have deleterious effects on health, especially when used in high doses” BIOVIT are the UK's leading experts in plant-derived nutrients for food. They have developed the world's first clinically developed and tested plant-derived multinutrient blends that can replace synthetic multinutrients, for use in food manufacture. Now, alongside Professor Richard Bracken and his team at Swansea University, they are conducting first-of-its-kind research into the bioavailability and efficacy of plant-derived vs synthetic nutrients. Ex-CEO of the ‘Vegan Friendly' certification and founder of vegan rugby club Green Gazelles Brendon Bale commented: “Consumers of plant based and natural products value transparency and trust most of all… synthetic micronutrients are neither natural or made of plants, and so the labelling needs to declare that. It's about health and trust”. Ky Wright, founder of BIOVIT, suggests the shift to natural nutrients should be common sense for the food giants: “Independent surveys have shown that over half of the public are generally unaware that foods they eat contain synthetic nutrients. They also show that a heavy majority (90%) would prefer their fortified foods to contain only natural nutrients, and 86% would pay more. There's a massive opportunity here for food companies and consumers.”

Gelatin, Magnesium Stearate, Omega-3, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, Creatine, Collagen… the list goes on and on.More than half of supplements contain animal-derived ingredients – and companies are not required to disclose them.In fact, many US-based supplement brands use intentionally ambiguous wording, hiding the truth and misleading consumers on the origin of their ingredients. We're shedding light on the animal cruelty and environmental damage that fuels a highly-profitable industry – because nobody else is.The United States dietary supplement industry kills an estimated 24 billion animals, while creating 1.8 billion plastic pill bottles of waste every year. As consumers, we have the power to spark change, so we're petitioning the FDA to implement more transparent regulations, which would mandate companies to disclose if their supplements contain animal byproducts. We're empowering fellow consumers so we can all make better, more informed decisions about what we're purchasing and putting in our bodies. It's as easy as signing your name.https://terraseedtransparentlabel.org/This week I am joined by Maria Cebrian..."As an avid long-distance mountain runner, Maria's love and connection with nature was no secret. This sense of love for nature and its animals drove Maria towards veganism, which opened her eyes to the injustices that our planet and its animals face daily. When Maria's new vegan lifestyle started leaving some nutritional holes in her diet, she noticed a dip in her running performance. The last thing she wanted to do was compromise her vegan lifestyle, so she explored her options for supplements. To her surprise she couldn't find a single sustainable multivitamin for vegans. At that moment, she knew that had to change. So, Maria co-founded Terraseed - the all-in-one multivitamin that supports vegans and our environment."https://terraseed.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Jess Karwat, Vegan women's health coach chats with me in this episode about her journey into veganism, toxic diet culture & how it has become entangled with 'plant based' social media culture & her view on finding vegan options around the world. From Jess' site:'As a certified vegan nutritionist, fitness trainer, yoga instructor and reiki master & having worked with over 200+ clients at this point, I have mastered the exact tools and techniques to help women thrive, get fit, learn how their beautiful bodies work by syncing with their menstrual cycle, heal their relationship with food and reclaim their confidence. Before I started my career as an online coach, I had my own years of struggle. Not only did I have very bad hormonal acne all over my face, neck and back, I also had gut & digestive issues as well and I struggled with an eating disorder.I KNEW THAT GOING VEGAN WAS GOING TO HELP ME WITH SOME OF THE ISSUES, BUT DIGGING DEEPER WAS WHAT REALLY DID THE TRICK.I became a certified vegan nutritionist and fitness trainer and entered the world of fitness. Very quickly I realised that this world burnt me out, my hormonal imbalances got worse which in turn triggered my eating disorder. The entire time I would work completely against my body as I thought this was the only way to go. I would over exercise, under-eat, gain weight, feel bloated and I felt like I was stuck in a vicious cycle.I remember at one point my mom took a picture of me in a bikini at the beach in Barcelona and I didn't recognise myself. I looked bloated and nothing like me. I felt lost.THE MOMENT I STARTED FOCUSING ON WORKING WITH MY BODY, HENCE WITH MY MENSTRUAL CYCLE AND FOCUSED ON HEALING FROM THE INSIDE OUT, THAT'S THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED FOR ME.Now after all of these years, endless research, self studies and certifications, I can finally say that I am looking the greatest I ever looked and I feel the best I have ever felt. I have fought my hormonal acne, my bloating and my eating disorder, I am feeling stronger than ever, physically and mentally and I finally feel in flow with my femininity and my menstrual cycle. On top of that, I know that our actions are positively impacting not only the environment and the animals of the world, but hundreds of women from all around the world. If you are reading this, see this is a sign from the universe.'Find out more about Jess at https://www.womensacademyoftransformation.com/ or book on to her forthcoming workshop at https://www.womensacademyoftransformation.com/2-day-workshop-final Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
