Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we're taking a neon-lit, blood-soaked trip through the moody underworld of Bangkok with Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives (2013). If you thought Drive was a stylish slow burn, this one cranks up the stillness, strips back the dialogue, and drops you into a hallucinatory revenge opera that's equal parts mesmerizing and maddening.Ryan Gosling stars as Julian, a quiet, emotionally blank drug smuggler running a Muay Thai gym as a front in Bangkok. When his volatile brother Billy is murdered for committing an unspeakable crime, their monstrous mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in town demanding vengeance. Julian is reluctantly pulled into a spiral of violence and surreal symbolism, facing off against Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), a sword-wielding police lieutenant who dispenses his own brutal, godlike justice. Refn drenches the screen in glowing reds and deep shadows, pairing every scene with an eerie, droning score from Cliff Martinez. The film is light on plot and even lighter on dialogue—Gosling speaks fewer than 20 lines—but the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a katana.Only God Forgives is a fever dream of a film—icy cold yet visually scorching. It's like a revenge thriller that's been put through a Lynchian blender, leaving behind a hushed, haunted meditation on masculinity, vengeance, and judgement. If you want action, go elsewhere. If you want mood and madness, step right in.

A new podcast episode of "Sound Speed Action" is out now — and with it we start at the beginning with the 1996 thriller “Mission Impossible” to kick off this series.Brian DePalma (Scarface, Carlito's Way) adapts the beloved thriller series for the big screen in a way that no one else can. He has a style all to himself. A really fun thing with this movie is that there is always so much detail and information to be taken from any scene you are watching in this movie. In every viewing you will definitely have a moment of “oh I didn't notice that before!”The action set pieces from the initial embassy job, to the Langley break-in scene, to the TGV helicopter chase — this movie set the bar high for action!Did we mention this movie also has a crazy fun cast? Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Vanessa Redgrave!Danny Elfman makes this movie a thrill with his exciting and dramatic soundtrack which is made only better by Lalo Schifrin's original Mission Impossible theme track and a sneaky inclusion of music too by The Cranberries and U2 members Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.The gadgets that don't always work, the tension created by ultra-silent moments during missions (Langley), the stunts, the fights — this movie is an absolute ride. One area that we were a little split on with this movie is that DePalma does a great job at trusting his audience to pay attention, read between the lines, and figure things out themselves. The other side of that is that this movie has been critiqued by some saying that the plot at times can feel a little overly complicated. Still, whatever view you have there, it's hard to deny how fun and original this movie was (and still is), at the time it was released.“Mission Impossible” is streaming now on Paramount Plus and Prime Video and is available to rent and buy on all platforms too. Dame Kristin Scott Thomas is one of our best, most distinctive, and most watchable actresses, and we're delighted that she's our guest on Rosebud today. Dame Kristin tells Gyles about her childhood, which was at times idyllic but was coloured by the tragic deaths of both her father and step-father. She talks about her impressive and highly talented mother, who brought up five children in the midst of loss. She talks about her move to Paris as a teenager, how she met and married her first husband, and how important her new French family became to her. She talks about her career, working with Prince, how she was cast in The English Patient and her work on stage in The Audience and Elektra. Kristin's life is fascinating, and this is a fascinating, and moving, episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Gosford Park, Robert Altman, 2001

Travelling - La 1ere

TOB followers know that we are obsessed with discovering positive and powerful roles for older women in movies and TV. That's why we lure our sister Screen Bitches -- Debbie Zimmerman (Women Make Movies), Malaga Baldi (Baldi Literary Agency) and Aruna Rao (Gender at Work)  – onto the podcast at least twice a year to schmooze about what we're watching and how TV and movies challenge (or regrettably affirm) stereotypes of older women in popular media. This time, we were kind of gobsmacked. For three reasons. First, because Debbie was inducted into the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (Oscars!) this year --so this episode features her firsthand account of an Academy newbie, walking the (other) red carpet. Second, because we actually found at least one film and a dramatic series with really superb portrayals of older women. If you haven't seen Slow Horses (Apple TV) or Nyad (Netflix), stop what you're doing right now and tune in. We thought that Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were extraordinary in the way they portrayed 60-year old Diana Nyad and her best friend Bonnie Stoll in Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida. (Only three of us loved the movie.) And while they are not main characters, three —not one, but three!— powerful and pivotal women over 50 in Slow Horses – Sophie Okonedo, Saskia Reeves, and Kristin Scott Thomas  -- epitomize characteristics you rarely see attributed to women of a certain age.    And third, we were so inspired – especially by Slow Horses – that TOB is now launching a screening tool to let movie and TV makers know we're watching. You know how Alison Bechdel brilliantly coined The Bechdel Test as a set of three simple criteria to measure the active presence (or absence) of women in film? Well, we love that test – and appreciate the influence it's had on generating more and better roles for women -- so we're introducing The TOBies, a set of 5 criteria to measure the quality of presence of OLDER women in TV and film. And they are that the older women are: 1) NOT solely defined by their age; 2) integral to the plot; 3) making independent choices (e.g., they have agency); 4) NOT seeking a man as ‘the prize'; 5) there are at least two older women (e.g., no tokenism). We'd love to know what you think! And to know if you see any films or TV shows where you think the portrayals of older women meet these criteria. Wouldn't you love to join us on Screen Bitches this year?  ------------------------------ Visit www.twooldbitches.com Follow us on Instagram @twooldbitches, Twitter @TwoOldBitches, Facebook @TwoOBPodcast Created, Produced and hosted by Joanne Sandler &  Idelisse Malavé Edited by Jeyda Bicer Social media management by Loubna Bouajaj

For this week's episode of the podcast, we watched director Brian De Palma's 1996 adaptation of Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Henry Czerny (Kittridge!), Emmanuelle Béart, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave. It was shot by frequent De Palma collaborator Stephen H. Burum and edited by Paul Hirsch. Screenplay by David Koepp and Robert Towne. Mission: Impossible, based on the television series, was the inaugural project of Tom Cruise's production company, and the Mission: Impossible franchise has become a core part of Cruise's celebrity career. The film was generally well-received by critics, although there were complaints about its convoluted plot, and was one of the biggest hits of 1996, grossing nearly $181 million on a budget of $45 million. In Mission: Impossible, Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, a member of the Impossible Missions Force who is on the run after his entire team — including its leader, Jim Phelps, played by John Voight — is killed in a failed mission to obtain a secretive list of every undercover CIA agent. When Hunt learns that the mission was actually a staged hunt for a mole within the IMF — and that the real mole is still out there, seeking the list — he goes on the run in an effort to obtain the list for himself, expose the mole, and regain his freedom. To do so, he recruits his own Impossible Mission Team — comprised of Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Beart — and stages a break-in at CIA headquarters in Langley. What unfolds next is a series of twists, turns, surprises and betrayals. The tagline for Mission: Impossible was “Expect the Impossible.” You can Mission: Impossible to rent or buy on Amazon and iTunes, and to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount Plus. Our next episode is Michael Bay's action thriller, The Rock.Connor Lynch produced this episode. A DePalmber to ReMalmber reaches its thrilling conclusion as our intrepid director kicks off an action mega-franchise with an opening entry that's far more 'film' than 'flick' -- it's 1996's Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian DePalma, written by David Koepp and Robert Towne, and starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Redgrave, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emilio Estevez and Rolf Saxon. This classic of the 90s now takes its rightful place in the ADHD-DVD canon. Somehow, perhaps in viewing it within the context of some of DePalma's broader work, both hosts enjoyed this movie more than ever before on this latest rewatch. All that plus-with bonus-also: Justin's got theatrical field reports on The Holdovers and Godzilla Minus One, and Hayley can't receive gifts. Other works discussed in this episode include The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla (1997, 2014), Godzilla vs Kong, Friday Night Lights, Fooled Around Fell In Love by Elvin Bishop, Guardians of the Galaxy, Topkapi, and the entire Mission: Impossible franchise. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, and it's not a requirement though in the case of a fine film such as this we do recommend you do, it can be found streaming on Paramount+(with). We'll be back next week with the first annual Shaqmas celebration on the program, as we honour Hayley's holiday tradition by watching a film starring Shaquille O'Neal on Christmas. This year it's friend and former guest EJ Feddes making his return with an unseen film from his collection: Steel (1997), starring Shaq as John Henry Irons, DC Comics' black Superman. It's... not very good, which should make it lots of fun to talk about, so we'll see you next week at the movies!

What is it like for an actor waiting in the wings in the moments before they go on stage? What has their journey been to arrive at that point, in full costume and make-up? And what motivates them to overcome their anxieties before stepping out in front of an audience?"I've always had this thing five minutes beforehand - I don't want to go on. It says start at 7.30... at 7.35 I'm hating everyone. I'm like, 'I don't want to do this. I don't have to be here. I've got other things to do'. It's five minutes of absolute fear."For some actors, Hollywood stardom beckons. How do we respond to much-loved works of art when the behaviour of the artist comes into question? Although European leaders have stepped up in many ways to support Ukraine, the war has also laid bare Europe's profound dependence on the United States. This reality was at the heart of French president Emmanuel Macron's recent call for more “strategic autonomy”, which stirred a new debate over the transatlantic power imbalance. It was also the topic of a new publication, “The Art of Vassalisation”, from ECFR's research director, Jeremy Shapiro, and senior policy fellow and head of the Berlin office, Jana Puglierin, who join week Mark Leonard for this week's episode. What factors influence “vassalisation”, and is it really more beneficial for the Americans? And how seriously are Europeans taking the risk of a Republican victory in 2024? This podcast was recorded on 3 April 2023. Please note that we adapted the introduction to Macron's interview on 9 April, but some views of our experts might be outdated. An in-depth analysis of the current events will soon follow in an extra episode. You might think you know all there is to know about today's guest. Posh girl who once dated Princess Margaret's son. Half of the early noughties style duo Trinny and Susannah. Plus a short-lived and strangely identifiable turn on Strictly as the slightly embarrassing older woman who can't really dance. (Hands up who over-identified!) Because that's what the media has told us. But look at it another way, Susannah Constantine is a novelist, writer and broadcaster with over 25 years experience. She's a hit podcaster (My Wardrobe Malfunction is a hoot - check out the episode with Kristin Scott Thomas!) and, on the cusp of 60, she's just written a game changing memoir that will make you think more than twice about what it really means to be a girl brought up in privilege; a girl brought up to be Ready For Absolutely Nothing.Susannah joined me from her swanky kitchen to talk extremely candidly about hitting rock bottom before she could confront her alcoholism, her complicated relationship with her mother, rediscovering her identity after it was ripped away and how she experienced a mental menopause. PLUS surviving Strictly humiliation, Dolph Lundgren and having tea with the queen.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including Ready For Absolutely Nothing by Susannah Constantine and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please join The Shift community.
