Wait a second... Is Lamb... Worried?!Bankole, Chris and Angel are on the edge of their seats this week, watching Jackson Lamb potentially on the back foot for what might just be the first ever in what is probably Bankole's favorite episode of 'Slow Horses' till date. The guys start by dutifully listening to Angel explain why everyone should watch HBO's 'The Pitt' — she's very convincing — and then go on to discuss the duality of enjoying seeing the agents working together in one place while wishing they weren't doing it in captivity. The team also tries to discern just how much truth might be present in Lamb's tall tale, and if he could even be talking about himself, as well as how it's possible for Roddy to be as delusional and irresponsible as he is. They of course also hand out this week's Louisa Awards for competence and decide who this week's slowest horse is.You can support us here.Subscribe to our Newsletter. Also available on YouTubeHost: Bankole ImoukhuedeGuests: Chris and AngelProduction by: Ebube Ubochi

Does anyone do any work around here? Well, of course not — this is Slough House. And somehow Roddy's delusion has only grown since last week.Bankole returns with Chris and Angel for the second episode of 'Slow Horses' season 5 on Apple TV+, and miraculously they might be on the same wavelength with Lamb for once: they can't decide which character is the least competent. They start by providing some much needed recommendations for the current — and upcoming — season of TV (what a time to be alive). Then they get into this week's action and give props to Shirley for being the only agent who's actually awake in this episode (7:10). I'm very excited about this week's BEHIND THE LENS and for you to hear from these two fabulous directors – KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS talking about the delightful, charming, and funny MY MOTHER'S WEDDING and HOWARD J. FORD talking up RIVER OF BLOOD and a "leisurely kayak ride" through the jungles of Thailand, complete with indigenous tribes who don't like outsiders. What could possibly go wrong! Directed by KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS and co-written by Kristin and John Micklethwaite (her real-life husband), MY MOTHER'S WEDDING stars Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, Freida Pinto, and Kristin Scott Thomas and is the tale of three sisters who return to their childhood home for a momentous occasion: the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother. Over the weekend, the family gathers to celebrate the new marriage, but mother and daughters alike are forced to revisit the past and confront the future, all with help from a colorful group of unexpected wedding guests. An absolute joy speaking with Kristin about her writing and directorial process, from the first moment, it is clear that she not only was and is passionate about this very personal story, but understands the intricate details of the production and storytelling process and its collaborative nature. Now we go from the beautiful, joyful, and fun, to the terror and horror of a Thai jungle. Directed by HOWARD J. FORD and written by Tom Boyle, RIVER OF BLOOD stars Joseph Millson, Louis James, Ella Starbuck, Sarah Alexandra Marks, and David Wayman, many of whom you may recognize from Howard's prior films. As you'll hear Howard break it all down, he goes deep into his processes, starting with the challenges of filming in Thailand, including the search for jungle locations and the use of a local crew. With nothing but praise for his Thai cinematographer Park, we discuss the creation and use of smoke, along with the choice of Sony FX3 and FX6 cameras. And laying dolly track in the jungle? Amazing. But always at the forefront is Howard's desire and demand for authenticity. Speaking of authenticity, how about the use of real indigenous tribes as well as practical effects? One of the truly outstanding elements of RIVER OF BLOOD is the sound design and sound mix. WOW! We really get into Joe Vince's sound design and the mixing work of Graham and Adam Daniel, particularly when you layer in the very cool score by Anthony and Jack Wade. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week Dave watched writer-director Zach Cregger's latest, WEAPONS (1:45). After not being enamored of, but not disliking, BARBARIAN, Cregger's previous feature, Dave's expectations were low-ish. But now having seen this nasty, gnarly, anti-fascist screed dressed up as a horror movie, WEAPONS is likely going on his 2025 top ten list. If you can handle the legitimate scares (and blood and guts), it's a must-watch. Then Megan and Evan talk about MY MOTHER'S WEDDING (20:26), Kristin Scott Thomas' directorial debut, which she also co-wrote and stars in, along with Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beechem as her daughters. Short version: Megan and Evan are not fans, finding it full of odd choices, drama that isn't warranted, and kink shaming played for laughs. (Buckle up, peeps.) Sometimes familiarity is what audiences want, and Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan deliver just that in "Freakier Friday," the sequel to their 2003 comic fantasy, "Freaky Friday." This time out, the supernatural body swap involves four characters including Lindsay's daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. The complications and sentimentality are predictable, but the cast is obviously having a ball and fans of the original will, too. The wildly imaginative and weirdly unsettling horror flick "Weapons" is a creatively made slow burn creepfest. Julia Garner and Josh Brolin are excellent in the tale of 17 children who mysteriously disappear from the same grade school class. The story unfolds by jumping back-and-forth in time to work its way under your skin. "Weapons" should give even hardcore horror buffs a case of the shudders. If Stephen King wrote a horror movie for kids, it might look a bit like "Sketch." A troubled little girl draws monstrous images in her notebook in an attempt to cope with her mother's death. When the pictures are accidentally dumped into a magical pond, the destructive creatures come to life. While "Sketch" is an inventive and sweet PG family feature, it might still be a bit too scary for very young kids. Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller star in “My Mother's Wedding,” a sentimental comic drama that marks the writing and directing debut of actress Kristin Scott Thomas. Three bickering sisters attend their widowed mother's weekend nuptials and old emotional wounds are reopened. It's being trashed by most critics, but “My Mother's Wedding” is a pleasant enough timewaster that doesn't quite deserve the wrath of the haters.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we're taking a neon-lit, blood-soaked trip through the moody underworld of Bangkok with Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives (2013). If you thought Drive was a stylish slow burn, this one cranks up the stillness, strips back the dialogue, and drops you into a hallucinatory revenge opera that's equal parts mesmerizing and maddening.Ryan Gosling stars as Julian, a quiet, emotionally blank drug smuggler running a Muay Thai gym as a front in Bangkok. When his volatile brother Billy is murdered for committing an unspeakable crime, their monstrous mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in town demanding vengeance. Julian is reluctantly pulled into a spiral of violence and surreal symbolism, facing off against Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), a sword-wielding police lieutenant who dispenses his own brutal, godlike justice. Refn drenches the screen in glowing reds and deep shadows, pairing every scene with an eerie, droning score from Cliff Martinez. The film is light on plot and even lighter on dialogue—Gosling speaks fewer than 20 lines—but the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a katana.Only God Forgives is a fever dream of a film—icy cold yet visually scorching. It's like a revenge thriller that's been put through a Lynchian blender, leaving behind a hushed, haunted meditation on masculinity, vengeance, and judgement. If you want action, go elsewhere. If you want mood and madness, step right in.

A new podcast episode of "Sound Speed Action" is out now — and with it we start at the beginning with the 1996 thriller “Mission Impossible” to kick off this series.Brian DePalma (Scarface, Carlito's Way) adapts the beloved thriller series for the big screen in a way that no one else can. He has a style all to himself. A really fun thing with this movie is that there is always so much detail and information to be taken from any scene you are watching in this movie. In every viewing you will definitely have a moment of “oh I didn't notice that before!”The action set pieces from the initial embassy job, to the Langley break-in scene, to the TGV helicopter chase — this movie set the bar high for action!Did we mention this movie also has a crazy fun cast? Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Vanessa Redgrave!Danny Elfman makes this movie a thrill with his exciting and dramatic soundtrack which is made only better by Lalo Schifrin's original Mission Impossible theme track and a sneaky inclusion of music too by The Cranberries and U2 members Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.The gadgets that don't always work, the tension created by ultra-silent moments during missions (Langley), the stunts, the fights — this movie is an absolute ride. One area that we were a little split on with this movie is that DePalma does a great job at trusting his audience to pay attention, read between the lines, and figure things out themselves. The other side of that is that this movie has been critiqued by some saying that the plot at times can feel a little overly complicated. Still, whatever view you have there, it's hard to deny how fun and original this movie was (and still is), at the time it was released.“Mission Impossible” is streaming now on Paramount Plus and Prime Video and is available to rent and buy on all platforms too. TOB followers know that we are obsessed with discovering positive and powerful roles for older women in movies and TV. That's why we lure our sister Screen Bitches -- Debbie Zimmerman (Women Make Movies), Malaga Baldi (Baldi Literary Agency) and Aruna Rao (Gender at Work)  – onto the podcast at least twice a year to schmooze about what we're watching and how TV and movies challenge (or regrettably affirm) stereotypes of older women in popular media. This time, we were kind of gobsmacked. For three reasons. First, because Debbie was inducted into the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (Oscars!) this year --so this episode features her firsthand account of an Academy newbie, walking the (other) red carpet. Second, because we actually found at least one film and a dramatic series with really superb portrayals of older women. If you haven't seen Slow Horses (Apple TV) or Nyad (Netflix), stop what you're doing right now and tune in. We thought that Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were extraordinary in the way they portrayed 60-year old Diana Nyad and her best friend Bonnie Stoll in Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida. (Only three of us loved the movie.) And while they are not main characters, three —not one, but three!— powerful and pivotal women over 50 in Slow Horses – Sophie Okonedo, Saskia Reeves, and Kristin Scott Thomas  -- epitomize characteristics you rarely see attributed to women of a certain age.    And third, we were so inspired – especially by Slow Horses – that TOB is now launching a screening tool to let movie and TV makers know we're watching. You know how Alison Bechdel brilliantly coined The Bechdel Test as a set of three simple criteria to measure the active presence (or absence) of women in film? Well, we love that test – and appreciate the influence it's had on generating more and better roles for women -- so we're introducing The TOBies, a set of 5 criteria to measure the quality of presence of OLDER women in TV and film. And they are that the older women are: 1) NOT solely defined by their age; 2) integral to the plot; 3) making independent choices (e.g., they have agency); 4) NOT seeking a man as ‘the prize'; 5) there are at least two older women (e.g., no tokenism). We'd love to know what you think! And to know if you see any films or TV shows where you think the portrayals of older women meet these criteria. Wouldn't you love to join us on Screen Bitches this year?  ------------------------------ Visit www.twooldbitches.com Follow us on Instagram @twooldbitches, Twitter @TwoOldBitches, Facebook @TwoOBPodcast Created, Produced and hosted by Joanne Sandler &  Idelisse Malavé Edited by Jeyda Bicer Social media management by Loubna Bouajaj

For this week's episode of the podcast, we watched director Brian De Palma's 1996 adaptation of Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Henry Czerny (Kittridge!), Emmanuelle Béart, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave. It was shot by frequent De Palma collaborator Stephen H. Burum and edited by Paul Hirsch. Screenplay by David Koepp and Robert Towne. Mission: Impossible, based on the television series, was the inaugural project of Tom Cruise's production company, and the Mission: Impossible franchise has become a core part of Cruise's celebrity career. The film was generally well-received by critics, although there were complaints about its convoluted plot, and was one of the biggest hits of 1996, grossing nearly $181 million on a budget of $45 million. In Mission: Impossible, Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, a member of the Impossible Missions Force who is on the run after his entire team — including its leader, Jim Phelps, played by John Voight — is killed in a failed mission to obtain a secretive list of every undercover CIA agent. When Hunt learns that the mission was actually a staged hunt for a mole within the IMF — and that the real mole is still out there, seeking the list — he goes on the run in an effort to obtain the list for himself, expose the mole, and regain his freedom. Nashville's pre-eminent film critic, connoisseur & Prince devotee Jason Shawhan returns to Movie Club as we talk Prince's 2nd film UNDER THE CHERRY MOON. We get into Prince's ever-practical wardrobe choices, Jerome Benton's woefully short film career, the rather progressive queerness of the film, “Martin Scorsese's Pee Wee's Big Adventure”, Wendy & Lisa, The Linn LM-1 drum machine, Prince's proteges, Michael Ballhaus, smuggling pimento cheese across state lines, why this is Prince's finest film, Morris Day & The Time, the sheer awfulness of Graffiti Bridge, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Siskel & Ebert missing the point and our own mistakes of believing the received wisdom on this film - thus avoiding it - in younger days.
