I'm adjusting to this drastic change in lifestyle at my advanced age, and hopefully you won't have to hear too much more about it, or the agony of de-feet. I tell you about the "scene from Midnight Express" showers I experienced at my new primary gym, LA Fitness in the deep valley. I've about had it with Jerry Seinfeld and his imperious, haughty attitude. The real question is "why hasn't anyone else," and when will someone have the balls to tell him to shut the fuck up, or kiss their ass? He even made a monkey out of Adam Carolla. I finished up Deadwood and had some thoughts about the series. I saw the lil indie hit "Tuner," and I also saw Masters Of The Universe. I really liked it, but you can rest assured I manage to spend way more time complaining about it than complimenting it, because I'm an ass.

James Cameron-Wilson was intrigued but not overly excited by #1 Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's first sci-fi film since Ready Player One. Emily Blunt plays a TV meteorologist dreaming of better things who shows signs of ESP and can suddenly speak foreign languages. A spiritual companion to Close Encounters, it gets ever weirder, taking in AI, religion, quantum physics and more, but is essentially a chase movie. At #12 is Tuner, which is the best and most entertaining that generic cinema can get. Leo Woodall stars as a piano tuner with incredible sensitivity to sound who finds he has another talent. Dustin Hoffman steals every scene he's in. You can see where it's all going, but it's a most engaging film. On Amazon Prime is the horror film Over Your Dead Body about a dysfunctional couple harbouring murderous intentions. It is an 18, deservedly so, but is also very funny. This week on Moviewallas, Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi are finally back together and tackling a packed slate of movies and music documentaries. First up is Mortal Kombat 2, the latest entry in the long-running video game franchise. Does it deliver the over-the-top action fans are hoping for, or is it another missed opportunity? Next, the team discusses Pressure, a tense historical drama set around the D-Day invasion that explores the enormous responsibility placed on the meteorologists whose forecasts helped shape the course of history. Then it's time for Tuner, an intimate character-driven drama that sparks a lively discussion about performance, relationships, and the choices we make when our lives begin to drift out of tune. Finally, the hosts dive into Boy George and Culture Club, a fascinating documentary chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of one of the most distinctive bands of the 1980s. From the New Romantic movement to personal relationships within the band, it's a revealing look at the people behind the music. As always, expect plenty of movie banter, strong opinions, and a few unexpected tangents along the way. Editor – Greg O'Bryant Tuner editor Greg O'Bryant returns to the podcast to discuss cutting a film that is part crime thriller, part romance, part character study, part music movie and part very compelling argument for keeping your ears covered in New York City. Directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, Tuner stars Leo Woodall as Niki, a gifted piano tuner whose hypersensitive hearing makes every day sound almost unbearable. That same extraordinary hearing also gives Niki an unexpected talent for cracking safes, pulling him from a quiet life of tuning pianos into an increasingly dangerous criminal world. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman as Harry, Niki's mentor, Havana Rose Liu as Ruthie, a young composer, along with Lior Raz, Jean Reno and Tovah Feldshuh. One of the biggest challenges on Tuner was the sheer amount of footage. Roher shot a large volume of material over a short production schedule, giving Greg and his assistant a mountain of performances, musical material, safe-cracking details and improvisation to shape into the final film. Greg discusses how he approached that process by focusing on subjectivity — using the edit to put the audience inside Niki's experience rather than simply moving through the plot. Sound was another major topic of conversation. Because Niki experiences the world through hyper-sensitive hearing, the editorial and sound teams had to build a language for when the audience enters his point of view.  Which meant figuring out how much of that experience to hear, and how to make the effect clear without making it punishing. O'Bryant also talks about working with sound designer Johnnie Burn, composer Will Bates and executive music producer Marius de Vries to balance the film's sound design, live music and score. GREG O'BRYANT Greg O'Bryant is an editor whose credits include the feature film The Report, as well as the television series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Extrapolations and Brand New Cherry Flavor. A frequent collaborator with filmmakers including Scott Z. Burns and Nick Antosca, Greg's work often explores stories with complex tone, subjective experience and ambitious sound and visual design. Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs. Hear Greg discuss his work on BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR. Listen to Greg detail his experience cutting the Apple TV+ series EXTRAPOLATIONS. We break down Jack's leap of faith, Ben's manipulations, the significance of the mysterious flight 316, and how the episode reshapes the series' mythology heading into the second half of the season. After our Lost discussion, we shift gears and review two of the most talked-about independent genre releases making waves online: Obsession and Tuner. We examine what works, what doesn't, and why both films have connected with younger audiences looking for something outside the traditional studio system. We also explore the growing popularity of Gen Z-driven original films such as Obsession, Backrooms, and Tuner. Their success suggests that many moviegoers are increasingly drawn to fresh concepts, internet-native storytelling, and creator-driven projects rather than familiar franchise extensions. We discuss whether this trend reflects a broader shift in audience tastes as upcoming studio releases like The Mandalorian & Grogu, Masters of the Universe, and Scary Movie 6 face the challenge of convincing audiences that established intellectual properties still have something new to offer. Is Hollywood entering a new era where original voices can compete directly with major franchises? 1962's State Fair marked the third screen adapatation of the novel by Phil Stong.  As in 1945, this one was a musical but a big, colorful, expansive musical that Hollywood was so good at in the 1960's.  Starring heartthrobs Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret, it's the story of the Frake family and their ambitions to win big at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.  Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote new music for the film, one of the few musicals written expressly for the big screen, and several plot elements were added or changed to make this version more contemporary.  Tom Ewell, Alice Faye (coming out of retirement) and Pamela Tiffin round out the Frake family. Dan and Vicky discuss the film as well as some recently seen movies like Obsession, Apex, Tuner, Is God Is, and Remarkably Bright Creatures.    Our socials:  hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast X: @HotDate726

Things get awkward on this week's Empire Podcast, folks. Not just because Chris Hewitt seems to be wearing a Skeletor mask for some of it, nor because he's so heat-addled that he forgets to introduce James Dyer properly. No, things get awkward because the team – Chris, James, Helen O'Hara, and Ben Travis – discuss whether it ever gets awkward for them when visiting film sets. Then, our intrepid quartet also discuss the week's movie news, including the shocking news of Paddington 4's potty-mouthed writers, and review Daniel Roher's Tuner, John Carney's Power Ballad, Kane Parsons' Backrooms, and Kristin Scott Thomas' directorial debut, My Mother's Wedding. Oh, and Chris sits down for a lovely chat with Leo Woodall, star of the excellent Tuner, and discovers that Woodall has some hidden talents. Enjoy!

From Oscar Gold to Fiction Filmmaking: Daniel Roher on Tuner How do you follow up winning an Academy Award? If you are Daniel Roher (Navalny), you resist the pressure to stay in your lane, take a leaf out of Bob Dylan's book, and make a massive leap into fiction! This week on The Filmmakers Podcast, Dom Lenoir sits down with Daniel to discuss his debut narrative feature, Tuner. Starring Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman, Havana Rose Liu, Lior Raz, and Jean Reno, the film is a brilliant blend of character drama and heist thriller. Daniel pulls no punches in this candid conversation about the realities of the industry. He shares how the Oscar opened doors, but why even at his level, the rejection never stops. He also breaks down the craft behind the film, explaining why he wrote the sound design into the script from day one, what it was like collaborating with master sound designer Johnny Burn, and his baptism of fire directing actors for the very first time.

It's a long holiday weekend, so an extra-long episode of our Breakfast Al Day podcast seems fitting. Here's what we reviewed as we head into Memorial Day: I LOVE BOOSTERS. Boots Riley is back with another maximalist, absurdist comedy. He follows up 2018's "Sorry to Bother You" with the story of a group of women who steal designer clothes and sell them at discount prices. Starring Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, Naomi Ackie and Demi Moore. In theaters. TUNER. The best new movie of the week. Oscar-winning documentarian Daniel Roher ("Navalny") makes his narrative feature debut with the story of a New York piano tuner (Leo Woodall) who uses his super-sensitive hearing to work as a safecracker on the side. Co-starring Dustin Hoffman and Havana Rose Liu. In limited release now, opening nationwide May 29. IS GOD IS. We got a ton of requests to catch up with this stylish Southern thriller from last week, and we're so glad we did. Writer-director Aleshea Harris adapts her stage play about twins who go on a cross-country road trip of revenge against their father, who tried to kill their mother.
