Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, Borschel-Dan begins the episode with her impressions of the United States after not having visited for eight years. We hear how American cottage cheese stacks up after all this time. We devote the rest of the program to "Tuner," the first narrative full-length feature by young Canadian filmmaker Daniel Roher and co-written by Robert Ramsey. Roher's 2022 film "Navalny," about the Russian political prisoner Alexei Navalny, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. But "Tuner" is a huge departure for the 33-year-old filmmaker and Hoffman explains how he manages to punch high while keeping his budget low. The plot surrounds a young piano tuner played by Leo Woodall who must make a quick buck after his mentor, played by Dustin Hoffman, falls on hard times. Tuner Niki White meets a team of thuggish Israelis, headed by Uri (Lior Raz), who exploit the tuner's highly sensitive hearing for nefarious means. Let's hear who gave these this film an "oy," "meh" or the prized "not bad" this week on The Reel Schmooze. Once upon a Time in Cinema Der Filmpodcast

Mostly Film – Take 236: What's NewIt's a big one this week. Jonathan and JP are back with a mountain of trailers, an absolutely unhinged watch list, and a news cycle that genuinely did not slow down.First, List It or Nix It — fifteen trailers go through the gauntlet this week. Werwulf, Angry Birds 3, Not Alone, The Dink, The Debut, Digger, Her Private Hell, Late Fame, The Weight, Jimmy, Union County, The Devil's Mouth, Mum I'm Alien Pregnant, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, and Charlie Harper. Yes, all of them. Yes, Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant is real. Then it's What We've Been Watching, and Jonathan went absolutely feral this week — Toy Story 5, Backrooms, Obsession, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, The Sheep Detectives, Carolina Caroline, David, and somehow also Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Minions, The Borrowers, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, and Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. JP brings Obsession, Backrooms, and Tuner to the table. Between the two of them, a lot of ground gets covered. In the news: The Odyssey had its world premiere in London tonight — Nolan, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Hathaway, and Pattinson all on the red carpet — and the conversation around the film is complicated. 450,000 trailer dislikes, replies turned off on premiere posts, and it opens in 11 days. Does tonight change anything? Minions & Monsters had a rough July 4th opening, becoming a franchise low domestically while Toy Story 5 just kept eating. The Michael Jackson biopic quietly became the highest-grossing biopic in history. The Avengers: Doomsday trailer is reportedly dropping at SDCC on July 25. And Emmy nominations land tomorrow morning — Harrison Ford might finally be getting his flowers.

The DC Universe (DCU) is expanding! Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl gives us a grittier, more "attitudinal" Kara Zor-El. But is the movie any good? Check out the show Fun Flix Fact: To maintain that raw, nomadic feel, the film was shot on location in Scotland and the UK, using the rugged landscapes to simulate the harsh, alien environments Kara travels through. We're shifting to a tense, atmospheric crime-thriller. Directed by Oscar-winner Daniel Roher, Tuner stars Leo Woodall as a gifted piano prodigy whose hyper-sensitive hearing makes him a master of tuning Steinways—and, unexpectedly, an elite safe-cracker.Fun Flix Fact: This is Daniel Roher's first narrative feature film after his massive success with the Academy Award-winning documentary Navalny. To celebrate two decades since the Man of Steel flew back into theaters, we're revisiting Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (2006). Whether you view it as a bold reimagining or a divisive sequel, we look at how Hollywood handled the "superhero comeback" trope in the mid-2000s.Fun Flix Fact: Brandon Routh's costume was so complex and tight that the production team had to incorporate special ventilation systems to keep him from overheating during the long shoot days! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Hit that subscribe button right now so you never miss an episode of The Flixters! I tell you about the "scene from Midnight Express" showers I experienced at my new primary gym, LA Fitness in the deep valley. I've about had it with Jerry Seinfeld and his imperious, haughty attitude. The real question is "why hasn't anyone else," and when will someone have the balls to tell him to shut the fuck up, or kiss their ass? He even made a monkey out of Adam Carolla. I finished up Deadwood and had some thoughts about the series. I saw the lil indie hit "Tuner," and I also saw Masters Of The Universe. I really liked it, but you can rest assured I manage to spend way more time complaining about it than complimenting it, because I'm an ass.

Editor – Greg O'Bryant Tuner editor Greg O'Bryant returns to the podcast to discuss cutting a film that is part crime thriller, part romance, part character study, part music movie and part very compelling argument for keeping your ears covered in New York City. Directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, Tuner stars Leo Woodall as Niki, a gifted piano tuner whose hypersensitive hearing makes every day sound almost unbearable. That same extraordinary hearing also gives Niki an unexpected talent for cracking safes, pulling him from a quiet life of tuning pianos into an increasingly dangerous criminal world. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman as Harry, Niki's mentor, Havana Rose Liu as Ruthie, a young composer, along with Lior Raz, Jean Reno and Tovah Feldshuh. One of the biggest challenges on Tuner was the sheer amount of footage. Roher shot a large volume of material over a short production schedule, giving Greg and his assistant a mountain of performances, musical material, safe-cracking details and improvisation to shape into the final film. Greg discusses how he approached that process by focusing on subjectivity — using the edit to put the audience inside Niki's experience rather than simply moving through the plot. Sound was another major topic of conversation. Because Niki experiences the world through hyper-sensitive hearing, the editorial and sound teams had to build a language for when the audience enters his point of view.  Which meant figuring out how much of that experience to hear, and how to make the effect clear without making it punishing. O'Bryant also talks about working with sound designer Johnnie Burn, composer Will Bates and executive music producer Marius de Vries to balance the film's sound design, live music and score. GREG O'BRYANT Greg O'Bryant is an editor whose credits include the feature film The Report, as well as the television series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Extrapolations and Brand New Cherry Flavor. A frequent collaborator with filmmakers including Scott Z. Burns and Nick Antosca, Greg's work often explores stories with complex tone, subjective experience and ambitious sound and visual design. Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs. Hear Greg discuss his work on BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR. Listen to Greg detail his experience cutting the Apple TV+ series EXTRAPOLATIONS. 1962's State Fair marked the third screen adapatation of the novel by Phil Stong.  As in 1945, this one was a musical but a big, colorful, expansive musical that Hollywood was so good at in the 1960's.  Starring heartthrobs Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret, it's the story of the Frake family and their ambitions to win big at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.  Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote new music for the film, one of the few musicals written expressly for the big screen, and several plot elements were added or changed to make this version more contemporary.  Tom Ewell, Alice Faye (coming out of retirement) and Pamela Tiffin round out the Frake family. Dan and Vicky discuss the film as well as some recently seen movies like Obsession, Apex, Tuner, Is God Is, and Remarkably Bright Creatures.    Our socials:  hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast X: @HotDate726

When Johnnie Burn first came on Tonebenders in 2022, to talk about his sound work on director Jordan Peele's hit film Nope, it was immediately clear that he was going to be one of our favourite guests. He has since been on many more times, but this first interview is a classic. He discusses designing the film's ominous winds, the "voice" of Jean Jacket and lots more. As a bonus this episode also features a mini-interview with Johnnie about his latest film, Tuner. ______SPONSORS: Sound Ideas works with partners across the media and creative industries to distribute professional sound libraries, and they're always looking to grow their collection. If you've created your own sound effects library, or are currently developing one, Sound Ideas is interested in acquiring high-quality collections from creators - whether it's a focused collection or a wide ranging release. They offer a trusted platform with global distribution, professional licensing, metadata support, and a team that understands the craft. If you have a sound effects library and are interested in selling it, Sound Ideas would like to hear from you. For more information, please reach out via: support@sound-ideas.com ________ If you are interested in field recording, you should know about the O-Mini P48 and the brand new O-Mini PIP miniature omni-directional electret microphones. Each one is hand made by Chris Trevino, a practicing field recordist, and a really engaged member of the sound community. He puts a lot of work into making and testing each mic to ensure they live up to his high standards. They are ultra-sonic capable, which makes manipulating your recordings with them a lot of fun. They are also extremely affordable. At $150us for the P48 & $130 for the PIP, they offer a lot of value for a stereo matched pair. Things get awkward on this week's Empire Podcast, folks. Not just because Chris Hewitt seems to be wearing a Skeletor mask for some of it, nor because he's so heat-addled that he forgets to introduce James Dyer properly. No, things get awkward because the team – Chris, James, Helen O'Hara, and Ben Travis – discuss whether it ever gets awkward for them when visiting film sets. Then, our intrepid quartet also discuss the week's movie news, including the shocking news of Paddington 4's potty-mouthed writers, and review Daniel Roher's Tuner, John Carney's Power Ballad, Kane Parsons' Backrooms, and Kristin Scott Thomas' directorial debut, My Mother's Wedding. Oh, and Chris sits down for a lovely chat with Leo Woodall, star of the excellent Tuner, and discovers that Woodall has some hidden talents. Enjoy!
