In November, 1999, the body of Paul Vados was found in an alley in Los Angeles.  Vados was unidentified until he was reported missing by Olga Rutterschmidt, who claimed to be his cousin.  Vados appeared to be the victim of a hit-and-run, but investigation of the case failed to develop evidence that would lead to a suspect and the case went cold.  In June, 2005, the body of Kenneth McDavid was found in a Los Angeles alley, again appearing to have been the victim of a hit-and-run.  An inquiry with LAPD by an insurance company investigator led to a conversation between two detectives who realized that Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt each had insurance policies on Vados and McDavid.  Join Michael and Lisa on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for Clear and Convincing, Episode 24, State of California v. As leaders...we are not in control. It's sad. It can be difficult to deal with this truth. But...as leaders we are not in control. This is one of the areas where leaders fall prey to delusion more than just about anything else. We want to be in control. We want absolute control...because we're control freaks. But, we're not in control. And this creates great frustration and disappointment. We can influence the circumstances around us. We can plan well, to minimize disruption. We can train expertly to lower risks. We can have a vision that is far reaching. But, we are not ultimately in control of our circumstances.  However, what we are in control of is how we react to these circumstances. That's all in our power. Join Michael and Jim as they detail out the critically important managed reactions of a skilled leader.

Join Michael and Robin as we start working on our next 1500 episodes when we talk about men and women in the workplace with David G. Smith PhD, and Brad Johnson PhD. Evidence reveals that the #MeToo movement has not been a catalyst to move men to action in their organizations, but rather it has instead increased the likelihood of them avoiding women entirely, exacerbating gender inequalities.     There are, however, many men eager to learn how to really move the dial on inclusion. They are GOOD GUYS—they just don’t know what to do, or how to get started on their own ally journey.   David G. Smith Ph.D., a sociologist, and former Navy pilot, and Brad Johnson Ph.D., a psychology professor, guide these men in their new book, GOOD GUYS: How Men Can Be Better Allies for Women in the Workplace (Harvard Business Review Press, Oct 13, 2020). Based on their major qualitative study, they detail what excellent male allyship looks like and how to apply interpersonally (at home), publicly (at work), and systematically (through organizational change). GOOD GUYS also reveals some of the obstacles men face—many of them don’t perceive gender inequities in the workplace at all (it’s hard to fix what you can’t see) and that men are unsure of how to take action (so they decide not to) and some see think any gains for women would mean losses for them.   In GOOD GUYS, they explain how to overcome these obstacles and to develop allyships that benefit all.
