Today's poem is Statement of Teaching Philosophy by Keith Leonard. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, guest host Maggie Smith writes… “I know I'm not the only one who's experienced the inadequacy of language. I know I'm not the only one who's struggled to communicate something I've been thinking or feeling. But maybe you've experienced the magic of language. Maybe you've read something that articulated what you've felt or experienced but could never describe yourself. Or created some of your own artful language that gets across what you couldn't say literally. It feels like a miracle, and it's why, I think, we turn to poems: Because they often say the unsayable.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. About 12,000 homes and businesses are still without power due to damage to electricity networks during the latest storm. Tá thart ar 12,000 teach agus gnóthas fós gan chumhacht mar gheall ar an damáiste a rinneadh do líonraí leictreachais le linn na stoirme is deireanaí. According to the Electricity Supply Board, Roscommon, Longford and North Westmeath are the areas where the power is always cut the most. Dar le Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais gurb iad Ros Comáin, an Longfort agus an Iarmhí Thuaidh, gurb iadsan na ceantair is mó a bhfuil an chumhacht gearrtha iontu i gcónaí. The company says that teams of technicians, in collaboration with their colleagues from the North, have been doing their best since early morning to restore the power in those places. Deir an comhlacht go bhfuil meithleacha teicneoirí, i gcomhar lena gcomhghleacaithe ón Tuaisceart, ag déanamh a seacht ndícheall ó mhoch maidine an chumhacht a thabhairt ar ais sna háiteanna sin. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 properties were left without power at the worst of the storm called 'Debi'. Áirítear go raibh tuairim is 100,000 áitreabh fágtha gan chumhacht an tráth ba mheasa a bhí cúrsaí le linn na stoirme ar gaireadh 'Debi' di. The chairman of the National Emergency Coordination Group, Keith Leonard, said that the worst floods were in Galway city. Dúirt cathaoirleach an Ghrúpa Comhordaithe Éigeandála Náisiúnta, Keith Leonard, gur i gcathair na Gaillimhe a bhí na tuilte ba mheasa. He also indicated that 'Debi' appeared to be the strongest of the four storms since the beginning of autumn and said that more storms were still promised. Thug sé le fios freisin gur cosúil go raibh 'Debi' ar an stoirm ba láidre de na ceithre cinn a bhí ann ó thús an fhómhair agus dúirt go raibh tuilleadh stoirmeacha fós geallta. The Mayor of Galway Eddie Hoare said that the floods were worst in the historic area of the city, where they often occur when there is a storm. Dúirt Méara na Gaillimhe Eddie Hoare gur mheasa na tuilte i gceantar stairiúil na cathrach, áit a mbíonn siad go minic nuair a bhíonn stoirm ann. To top it all off, he said, people in that area can't get insurance. Mar bharr ar an donas, arsa sé, ní féidir le daoine sa cheantar sin árachas a fháil. Support schemes established by the Government last month are to be made available to people in Galway city and Oranmore, where the storm also caused a lot of damage. Tá scéimeanna tacaíochta a bhunaigh an Rialtas an mhí seo caite le cur ar fáil do dhaoine i gcathair na Gaillimhe agus in Óran Mór, áit a ndearna an stoirm go leor damáiste chomh maith. According to the first scheme, €5,000 can be claimed on the first occasion followed by an inspection payment of €20,000. De réir na chéad scéime, is féidir €5,000 a éileamh ar an gcéad ásc agus íocaíocht iniúchta €20,000 ina dhiaidh sin. According to the second scheme, which relates to the most urgent cases, a payment of €10,000 can be claimed immediately followed by an audit payment of €100,000. De réir an dara scéim, a bhaineann leis na cásanna is práinní, is féidir íocaíocht €10,000 a éileamh láithreach agus íocaíocht iniúchta €100,000 ina dhiaidh sin. I'll never forget the day Sky Channel boss Graham McNeice told me he was bringing a young race caller from Queensland to join the Sky team. Russell Leonard was only seventeen, very talented but very intimidated by the big city. The youngster loved the experience but couldn't adapt to life in a city like Sydney. We catch up with 50 year old Russell Leonard three decades after homesickness sent him scurrying home to Rockhampton. Right off the top we investigate the nickname by which he's universally known. Russ takes us through his current work schedule. You'll be surprised when he outlines the number of horses trained at Callaghan Park in Rockhampton. Russ helps to coordinate trackwork a couple of days a week. He talks of the outstanding racing surfaces available at Rockhampton and Mackay. Russ takes us back to childhood days with his horse trainer father Keith Leonard. He remembers life on the road with a truckload of horses. They met some interesting people. He has never forgotten his “baptism of fire” behind the microphone when the Clermont race caller couldn't get there. Russ looks back on early days as a caller on bush tracks and his first real opportunity in Rockhampton. He's never forgotten the fateful phone call from Graham McNeice which enticed him to Sydney. He reflects on a busy year with Sky Channel and the lingering homesickness that brought him home. Russ looks back on a short but fascinating stint in Port Moresby. He couldn't believe the volume of wagering in the New Guinea betting shops. This man has crammed a lot into his fifty years. He remembers his role as racing manager to the late Bruce McLachlan at the trainer's world class Caboolture training centre. Russ talks of his long stint as a sales rep in the liquor industry- firstly with Hardys Wines and later with Bacardi Lion. The talented Leonard takes us through his role as a compere of the popular Calcutta functions which precede regional Cup meetings. He's in demand as far afield as Warrnambool. Russ talks of his marriage to Karen and the progress of their two sons. Russ pays tribute to two special horses who cut their teeth on Central Queensland tracks. You'll know the names. I can't believe more than three decades have passed since “Brolga” spent a restless year in Sydney. Lovely to catch up with a dyed in the wool Queenslander.
Today on the show I have Keith Leonard. Keith is the yarn designer and teacher behind Yarn Snob, his own hand dyed line of yarn. Keith tells us the story behind his yarns – how working at a yarn shop organically led into his business. He kept listening to what knitters wanted! I can't wait for you to hear his top tip for maintaining his sanity throughout a long work day. Show notes here.
Today marks the third installment in the ‘Mentoring Moments for Managers' series which looks at those key pieces of advice that are so important for new leaders, and today, REL Talent partner, Keith Leonard, weighs in. With his vast amount of experience in working with leaders and becoming one himself, Keith really drills down into this topic, serving up some valuable recommendations for listeners here today. He starts off by sharing what he wishes he knew before becoming a leader and highlighting some of the areas where he stumbled as a result. He then proceeds to offer his experience-based advice to those in leadership roles, including suggestions for setting up a relationship with a mentor. A talented educator, Keith efficiently and effectively distils his extensive knowledge into powerfully concise messages, resulting in an episode that, while it may be short in length, is definitely long on value. The Finer Details of This Episode: What Keith wishes he knew before becoming a leader Some of the areas where Keith stumbled upon becoming a leader Keith's advice for leaders Setting up a relationship with a mentor Quotes: “There's just some things that you don't think about telling someone. They're not part of a training, it's not a process or a procedure, it's not some computer you have to use - just kind of advice.” “By far, more important than any sort of, you know, model or leadership technique, is being able to grow and cultivate and maintain a relationship.” “People don't leave businesses. They leave, you know, their boss.” “What I was doing wrong was I was not establishing any sort of relationship.” “The only way to truly create teamwork is to be invested in another person. And how can you create that investment, if you don't actually get to know them?” “When you share personal experiences with the people that you're leading, it builds trust.” “You cannot expect your employees or the people following you to come in and be excited or energized about doing their job if you're walking into work in a pissed off attitude every day.” “What I'm asking you is, I'm asking you not to be anything different than I'm willing to be.” “If you don't know the person that you're going to be mentoring, how can you ever give any sort of advice?” “You have to sit there and get to know individuals. You have to understand that leadership takes some time.” Show Links: REL Talent: HR Consulting
