This week Nicola and Di chat with the extraordinary Layne Beachley AO. Layne is widely regarded as the most successful female surfer in history. She is the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles, and she then went on to win a 7th world title in 2006 before retiring from the World Tour in 2008. Since retiring, Layne is a highly sought after speaker and is the co-author of a new book Awake Academy: Know yourself, grow yourself to live a happier, more purposeful life, which she wrote with Tess Brouwer. Layne and Tess’ book, as well as their online courses and events, give people life-changing tips and tools to turn ideas and intentions into actions, so they can become the champions of their life. This is a really powerful episode where Layne opens up about her personal challenges and the adversity she’s had to overcome since the very early days. Layne shares all about her childhood, being adopted at birth, and then losing her mum at the age of 7 when a cosmetic surgery went horribly wrong. A year after her mum died, the local kids were starting to ask questions about why Layne looked so different from the rest of her family, and so her dad sat her down at 8 and told her she was adopted. Layne talks about how learning that she was adopted shattered her sense of self, and in that moment, at the age of 8, she decided that the only way she would be loveable was if she became a world champion at something. This was the fuel that propelled Layne to become the most successful surfer in history, but Layne talks about the moment a friend opened her eyes to what was really driving her, and how whilst she was externally successful, it was an unhealthy and unsustainable success that was driven by an inner fear and lack of worthiness. We talk about the inner work that Layne had to do to overcome her fears and recognise her innate worth, and the practices and tools she now lives by to be healthy, happy, purposeful and have sustainable success. This is such a powerful and deep chat, but it is also FULL of laughter and light. Layne is an absolute joy and this conversation had the perfect mix of everything - you get to ride the waves of Layne’s life with us. We hope you enjoy it! PART THREE of SEVEN SECRETS OF SALES ACTIVATIONThe objective of a Customer Bonding campaign is to make your name the one that people think of first and feel the best about. When you have not successfully bonded with your customer, any attempt at sales activation is simply an experiment in direct marketing. This can certainly work for awhile if you're good at it, but it will work less and less well the longer you keep doing it.The world of marketing is full of people who will tell you exciting success stories about high-impact offers that made them a lot of money quickly. But have you ever noticed that all of those stories are told using past-tense verbs? They are telling you about something that happened, but is no longer happening now.Give that some thought.“Have you ever done anything that worked really well?” is a question I have asked a couple of thousand business owners over the past forty years.“Oh, yes!” they answer.“Tell me about it!” I say with bright eyes. After they explain to me what they did and how awesome it was, I say, “Wow, that sounds great! Are you still doing it?”When they say “No,” (which they always do,) I wear the expression of a puzzled puppy and ask, “Why not?”Yes, I am a tiny bit evil. But the simple truth is that I want them to realize their mistake, own it, regret it, and decide – on their own – never to do ask me to temporarily fluff up their sales numbers by resorting to the meth-laced crack cocaine of lies, gimmicks, artificial urgency, ambiguous offers, or misleading messages. It's just not the way to build a company.Few business owners have the patience to win the hearts of the public. But if you have what it takes to become the company that people think of first and feel the best about when they need what you sell, a new day will dawn for you and your business. In golden glow of that goodwill, up to 40 percent of the ads in your Customer Bonding campaign can include happy, healthy, sustainable Sales Activation. These are the ways to do it:Remarkable Item, Remarkable Story.A 30-year client, Kesslers Diamonds, recently conducted a contest among their designers with the winning designer honored by name in a radio ad.RICK: I'm really looking forward to this.SARAH: Me, too.RICK: She absolutely nailed it.MONICA: Are you talking about Jenni Sambolin?SARAH: Yeah, Jenni and her pendant, “The Music in a Mother's Heart.”JENNI: [SFX Door Opening] Hi Rick. This is HUGE!SARAH: Jenni, we expect “The Music in a Mother's Heart”to sell out very quickly.RICK: We'll also make a few available online.JENNI: I designed that pendant from the memory of how my Mother made me feel when we would sing together.MONICA: How often did that happen?JENNI: Constantly. We would sing along with whatever was playing on the radio, or sometimes we would watch a musical on TV and sing along with that.SARAH: At just 124 dollars, “The Music in a Mother's Heart” is going to sell out lightning fast.RICK: I'm buying...

On April 30, 1980, six heavily armed gunmen burst into the Iranian embassy on Princes Gate, overlooking Hyde Park in London. There they took 26 hostages, including embassy staff, visitors, and three British citizens. I talk with Britain's bestselling historian Ben Macintyre who has written a new book called “The Siege: The Remarkable Story of the Greatest SAS Hostage Drama”. The book details the tense six-day siege ensued as millions gathered around screens across the country to witness the longest news flash in British television history, in which police negotiators and psychiatrists sought a bloodless end to the standoff, while the SAS – hitherto an organisation shrouded in secrecy – laid plans for a daring rescue mission: Operation Nimrod. Drawing on unpublished source material, exclusive interviews with the SAS, and testimony from witnesses including hostages, negotiators, intelligence officers and the on-site psychiatrist, bestselling historian Ben Macintyre takes readers on a gripping journey from the years and weeks of build-up on both sides, to the minute-by-minute account of the siege and rescue. Recreating the dramatic conversations between negotiators and hostages, the cutting-edge intelligence work happening behind-the-scenes, and the media frenzy around this moment of international significance, The Siege is the remarkable story of what really happened on those fateful six days, and the first full account of a moment that forever changed the way the nation thought about the SAS – and itself. Conceived in Rape, Adopted in Love: The Remarkable Story of Ryan Bomberger - Ep. 113

Christian Parent, Crazy World

Ryan Bomberger has been told that he should have never been born, that he doesn't deserve to live. Repeatedly. Why? Because Ryan was conceived in rape. Less than 1% of pregnancies begin in the violent act of rape. Yet despite this extremely uncommon occurrence, the pro-choice narrative myopically centers around this rare circumstance as a justification for ending an innocent life. But people seldom ask: Is a child conceived in rape less human, less valuable to society? Is he or she less valuable to God? Pro-abortion advocates say that they are, and some pro-lifers even make that exception. Ryan's remarkable testimony of being conceived in rape but adopted in love serves as a powerful reminder that every life is sacred, valuable, and has purpose—regardless of the circumstances of their conception. Catherine and Ryan also explore the wonderful gift of adoption and the pervasive misconceptions surrounding the pro-life movement by highlighting the comprehensive support provided by pro-life organizations to women facing unplanned pregnancies. These workers provide holistic care before and after birth, offering housing, work opportunities, health care, furniture, baby supplies, childcare classes, and physical and emotional care for moms who don't have a support system. Their conversation also touches on the book "Pro-Life Kids" authored by Ryan's wife, Bethany, which brilliantly simplifies complex arguments about the value of life for children to comprehend. The book reinforces the idea that every human being, regardless of their circumstances, possesses intrinsic value and dignity. RYAN BOMBERGER'S BIO: Ryan Bomberger, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, The Radiance Foundation (www.radiance.life). Ryan has been named “one of the 50 greatest pro-life leaders in the last 50 years” in the book “Legacy of Life.” Author of the book “Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong” (www.notequalbook.com). Its free Black community attracted people from all walks of life--businesswomen, church leaders, laborers, and writers--who sought to grow their city in a radical anti-slavery vision. The residents of neighborhoods like DUMBO, Fort Greene, and Williamsburg organized and agitated for social justice. They did so even as their own freedom was threatened by systemic and structural racism, risking their safety for the sake of their city. Brooklynites: The Remarkable Story of the Free Black Communities that Shaped a Borough (NYU Press, 2024) recovers the lives of these remarkable citizens and considers their lasting impact on New York City's most populous borough. This cultural and social history is told through four ordinary families from Brooklyn's nineteenth-century free Black community: the Crogers, the Hodges, the Wilsons, and the Gloucesters. You may not know the name Tony Hand, but in 1986, both he and the Oilers eventually crossed paths--and the results were nothing short of extraordinary.    If you're asking how serious the guilty verdict is for Donald Trump just take a look at what happened after it was announced.  The reaction shines a light on how un-serious this trial was.    A Democrat mega donor has had enough and is willing to lose friends over switching his money and support to Trump after this.   The Chiefs OTA focus is new plays for the offense and a new style for special teams.    Congrats are in order for Nate Bukaty who's ending his full time gig on Sports Radio 810 to live his dream of calling a bigger slate of soccer matches on tv.    And you have to hear a story today from Kyle Roggenkamp, the CEO of www.ballardcenter.org. He is personally an inspiration and he's about to tell you about the single great foster care/adoption story ever in our area.

Less than 400 people have ever completed the Transcontinental Run across the United States.  Recently, Paul Johnson became one of those people, and one of the fastest to ever do it, completing the trek in 52 days and averaging 59 miles a day (yes, you read that right.) Paul is passionate about inspiring others to get up, engage in physical activity, and find their own positive outlets. Paul discovered that military and veteran communities are particularly prone to struggles with mental health due to the nature of everything they do and experience, and because of this, Paul dedicated this trans con run to Team Red White & Blue. He raised over $590,000 for this important cause.  In today's conversation, Paul takes me through his journey and progression within the sport, the logistics behind planning a trans con run, how he preserved despite wanting to throw in the towel every single morning, what's next, and so much more! Man, was this conversation inspiring. One of the things that Paul shared with me that struck me was how, just a few years ago, he felt like his body was "literally going to fall apart running 30 miles a week," to then averaging 59 miles a day on this run. His story is one of dedication and the power of running for something bigger than yourself.  Tap into the Paul Johnson Special.  You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching "The Running Effect Podcast." If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.  The podcast graphic was done by the talented: Xavier Gallo  S H O W N O T E S -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ -My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en -My Newsletter: https://therunningeffect.substack.com   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dominic-schlueter/message

Last weekend on March 10th the UK celebrated Mother's Day.  They say that there is nothing like a Mother's Love.  When you have a child you vow to love and protect them for the rest of your life.  One woman took that vow so seriously that she came up against some of the most dangerous people in Mexico.  Often only armed with a gun, fake ID and a disguise she gave hope to hundreds of parents of missing children.SummaryIn this episode, Cherry shares the case of Miriam Rodriguez, a mother in Mexico whose daughter was kidnapped by the Los Zetas drug cartel. Miriam paid the ransom but received no news about her daughter. She took matters into her own hands, conducting her own investigation and eventually discovering the location of her daughter's remains. Miriam faced frustration with the authorities and the lack of response from the government. The case highlights the brutality of the drug cartel and the challenges faced by families seeking justice. Miriam Rodriguez, a mother from Mexico, took on a drug cartel single-handedly to seek justice for her daughter's abduction and murder. Despite facing death threats and lack of support, Miriam went to great lengths to track down and expose the gang members involved. In today's episode, author and entrepreneur Lorenzo Lewis tells you the amazing story of how he is changing the lives of over 3 million people a year. His story is so inspiring, and I wanted you to meet Lorenzo because I know he'll inspire you to think bigger about making a difference in your community or the world at large. Lorenzo had no funding, influence, or experience. He just had a simple idea and a very big heart. And that's all you need to make the world a better place. When Lorenzo was born, the odds were already stacked against him: his mother gave birth to him while she was in jail. His father died in prison. He was raised by his aunt and uncle. As a child, he struggled with anger, anxiety, and depression and was labeled a problem. You'll hear about the defining moment when Lorenzo made the decision to turn his life around. He graduated from college and started working in health and human services. That was where, at the age of 24, he had an idea about creating a mental health movement that is now changing millions of lives. “The Confess Project” was born.  Lorenzo's nonprofit trains barbers and beauticians to be mental health advocates for the men, women, and children who are sitting in their chairs. Now 3,000 mental health advocates across the country are changing the lives of over 3 million people a year. It's an absolutely incredible story. Today, you will learn:The incredible solution Lorenzo thought of to make therapy accessible and easy for underserved and represented communities. How to give yourself permission to pursue that big idea. The revolutionary Harvard study that explains why you feel so comfortable telling your hairdresser about everything. Why you have all the power and tools you need to make a difference. How working from home has increased loneliness (and why you feel like you have nobody to talk to).The 4 things you can say to someone who is having a bad day (steal this from Lorenzo's playbook). Why now is the right time to take action on that project you are thinking about. I can't wait for you to meet, learn from, and be inspired by Lorenzo. His story is proof that it's never too late to change your own life and that when you see a problem you want to solve, lean into it. You'll not only help other people; you'll surprise yourself with how much of a difference you can make. Xo, Mel In this episode:2:30: 60% of us don't fully trust this, so we avoid it altogether.5:40: How do you start a nonprofit when you have no idea how?11:00: Black-owned hair shops are an integral part of black communities.14:30: Lorenzo's is on a mission to close the vulnerability gap.17:20: Anxiety may not always look the way you think it does.19:45: Kids get labeled as bad behavior instead of treating mental health.26:15: A child who does not feel warmth from the village will burn it down.29:50: Unmet mental health needs are sometimes expressed as anger.35:50: The moment Lorenzo proved that he keeps his word.39:20: Stories of people not being supported mentally and emotionally.42:45: When your therapist doesn't look like you, it's a barrier to connection.44:20: I still remember when Ed Mylett said this to me.46:20: So how do you come up with an idea that's never been done before?48:20: How do you get men to admit they need professional help?52:00: What does it mean to be vulnerable and why is that important?53:40: When your nonprofit starts reaching 1 million people!54:00: The 4-Part therapeutic formula of The Confess Project we can all use.56:40: Let's role model what it looks like to sit in the barber chair.60:20: The surprising Harvard research that drove this nonprofit's mission.64:00: Examples of the impact The Confess Project has had on communities.68:30: When you believe in your dream and you make it happen.70:15: Two powerful stories from two barbers who saved two lives.  Want more resources?
