They discussed the project to save modernist buildings in Kyiv and the contradictions of the fight to preserve futurist architecture, as well as the experience of working with Soviet artist, musicologist and architect Florian Yuriev; how Oleksiy sourced the CCTV and other footage that made up his two Chornobyl films; the experience of working in Kyiv since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began; and the importance of understanding the nature of Russian colonial expansion and imperialist in the east, and its parallels with the occupation of the Americas. Clare Gardaí are warning that any motorists caught speeding will be punished to the full extent of the law during a special operation today. As part of National Slow Down Day which goes on until 7 tomorrow morning, Gardaí will be carrying out high visibility speed checks nationwide. So far this year, 3,922 fixed charge notices have been issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit in Clare, while there has been one fatality on this county's roads. My guest today is Tom Satterly.  Tom is a highly decorated combat veteran, having served in the Army 25 years, with the last 20 in the US Army's most elite Tier One unit, Delta. During his career Tom was involved in, and led, some of our nation's most important military campaigns including the Battle in Mogadishu portrayed in the film Blackhawk Down and the capture of Saddam Hussein. Her husband, Major Troy Gilbert, was an F16 pilot from the 309th Fighter Wing, Luke AFB, Arizona. He was deployed to Balad and during a close air-support mission to a special operations forces about 40 miles north his plane crashed. Insurgents took the body as a war trophy and it would be 10 years before he was found and brought back home. Ginger was left to raise 5 children, all under the age of 9, and rebuild their lives.  Jay and Donna sit down with Ginger as she tells her story on what it took to come back after having her world turned upside down; what she is doing now to give back; and what advice she has for those that have walked in similar shoes. Journalists estimate that at least 60 men from Dagestan died fighting for Russia by March 23, indicating that this republic had lost more soldiers, by far, than any other region in Russia. In terms of public messaging, Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov has been one of the loudest cheerleaders for the “special operation,” rattling his saber at every opportunity and declaring the seizure of Ukrainian territories before it's actually happened. Across the North Caucasus, one of the most crucial factors when it comes to military service is the absence of alternatives. Unemployment is higher in this region than anywhere else in Russia. It's the highest of all in Ingushetia, where it exceeds 30 percent. In this episode Mike sits with Darin Pepple to talk about his time in uniform and his book; Dodge Bomb: Outside the Wire in the Second Iraq War .Darin realized when was young that the traditional path wasn't for him. In this AIP Episode Darin and Mike talk about how that drove him to raise his right hand and join the Army. The Army's discipline is what gave Darin structure in life. When he initially joined, he was part of a mounted stinger team. Darin decided to become an officer after his initial commitment because he believed that officers made the decisions, and their leadership was crucial to the mission and military. Darin wrote his book because wanted to capture the real account of his experiences in the Iraqi War. From a conventional Army persons perspective and highlight the fact that not everyone is Special Operation operator that kills people and comes home angry with PTSD. In the episode they share the two sides, mike has the special operations perspective and Daren has the regular force. Central to the story is LT Eddie Fitzgerald which is made up of 60% Darin's real-life experiences. The book also helped Darin with the transition out of the uniform. He outlined some elements of toxic leadership, using a character in his book to show how detrimental it can be to organizations. On the counter to toxic leadership, leaders that lead with example can build respect and rapport with your organization. There is still a lot of stories to tell about the GWOT and leadership lessons to extract. These captured stories can also help veterans heal and do the hard work with recovering from the trauma. As veterans our failure to talk about these events creates distance and they don't properly understand who we are. Darin closes the episode with plans for a second edition of the book and a sequel. During his time, he has been involved in, and led, some of the US most important military campaigns. He fought in Mogadishu and was portrayed in the Oscar Winning film: ‘Black Hawk Down', which was the longest sustained firefight of US forces since Vietnam. He has deployed countless times and led hundreds of missions including the capture of Saddam Hussein. He is the recipient of numerous medals including a Silver Star, 4 Bronze Stars, 1 of which was for Valorous acts. Beyond Tom's invaluable service in uniform, he continues to fight and win his own "silent war". Having come within seconds of taking his own life and becoming a veteran suicide statistic, today, Tom is on his most important mission to date with his wife and partner, Jen. Together, they are co-Founders and co-CEOs of the ‘All Secure Foundation', which I'll mention more about in a second. Jen was an award-winning filmmaker and photographer for 15 years, spending the last three as Director of Film and Photography at an elite Special Operations training company fully embedded with Navy SEALS, Green Berets, and Army Rangers in large-scale realistic training missions. During her time with Special Operations warriors, Jen began to see a pattern. As it turns out, many were dealing with complex Post-Traumatic Stress. This realisation motivated her to help them find a way to constructively deal with Post-Traumatic Stress and its symptoms, which sadly includes isolation, anxiety, severe depression, anger issues and a long list of medical challenges. Jen made it her mission to not only help the service member but also their families who often suffer from secondary PTS. As a result, Jen stepped away from the camera and became a certified health and wellness coach. She recently published a book titled ‘Arsenal of Hope: Tactics for Taking on PTSD, Together', available here.
