Clare Gardaí are warning that any motorists caught speeding will be punished to the full extent of the law during a special operation today. As part of National Slow Down Day which goes on until 7 tomorrow morning, Gardaí will be carrying out high visibility speed checks nationwide. So far this year, 3,922 fixed charge notices have been issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit in Clare, while there has been one fatality on this county's roads. Roads Policing Superintendent of the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division Eddie Golden says all motorists have a part to play in reducing road traffic collisions.

My guest today is Tom Satterly.  Tom is a highly decorated combat veteran, having served in the Army 25 years, with the last 20 in the US Army's most elite Tier One unit, Delta. During his career Tom was involved in, and led, some of our nation's most important military campaigns including the Battle in Mogadishu portrayed in the film Blackhawk Down and the capture of Saddam Hussein. Tom is the recipient of numerous medals including a Silver Star, and 4 Bronze Stars, with 1 for Valorous acts.  He was also the first American to ever attend Germany's Ranger School.  Tom retired from Delta in 2010 as a Command Sergeant Major.Tom's willingness to speak openly and honestly of his mental and emotional struggles have saved the lives of countless other warriors who believed they had to suffer in silence and make it alone or not at all. Her husband, Major Troy Gilbert, was an F16 pilot from the 309th Fighter Wing, Luke AFB, Arizona. He was deployed to Balad and during a close air-support mission to a special operations forces about 40 miles north his plane crashed. Insurgents took the body as a war trophy and it would be 10 years before he was found and brought back home. Ginger was left to raise 5 children, all under the age of 9, and rebuild their lives.  Jay and Donna sit down with Ginger as she tells her story on what it took to come back after having her world turned upside down; what she is doing now to give back; and what advice she has for those that have walked in similar shoes. At 36 years old, she faced the sudden tragic loss of her college-sweetheart husband in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the horrors that quickly followed. The Nigerian Air Force disclosed plans to establish an aviation city in Osun State while it formally took possession of the MKO Abiola Airport, Ido-Osun, Osun State. In this episode Mike sits with Darin Pepple to talk about his time in uniform and his book; Dodge Bomb: Outside the Wire in the Second Iraq War .Darin realized when was young that the traditional path wasn't for him. In this AIP Episode Darin and Mike talk about how that drove him to raise his right hand and join the Army. The Army's discipline is what gave Darin structure in life. When he initially joined, he was part of a mounted stinger team. Darin decided to become an officer after his initial commitment because he believed that officers made the decisions, and their leadership was crucial to the mission and military. Darin wrote his book because wanted to capture the real account of his experiences in the Iraqi War. From a conventional Army persons perspective and highlight the fact that not everyone is Special Operation operator that kills people and comes home angry with PTSD. In the episode they share the two sides, mike has the special operations perspective and Daren has the regular force. Central to the story is LT Eddie Fitzgerald which is made up of 60% Darin's real-life experiences. The book also helped Darin with the transition out of the uniform. He outlined some elements of toxic leadership, using a character in his book to show how detrimental it can be to organizations. On the counter to toxic leadership, leaders that lead with example can build respect and rapport with your organization. There is still a lot of stories to tell about the GWOT and leadership lessons to extract. These captured stories can also help veterans heal and do the hard work with recovering from the trauma. As veterans our failure to talk about these events creates distance and they don't properly understand who we are. Darin closes the episode with plans for a second edition of the book and a sequel. Tom and Jenn Satterly are all about helping veterans and their families. Tom is a retired CSM Delta Force and Jen Satterly was previously embedded in Realistic Training Missions with Special Operations units as Director of Film and Photography. When their relationship began, Tom was not in a good place mentally, but could not figure out what was causing his anger and excessive drinking. He finally had a therapist explain to him that he was suffering from PTS and needed to deal with it. From that point on, things slowly began to change and as he began to help others, he truly found his calling. Their mission is to help Veterans returning home but more importantly to support the family. They know that helping the family members is a huge piece of the puzzle. Jen made it her mission to not only help the service member but also their families who often suffer from secondary PTS. As a result, Jen stepped away from the camera and became a certified health and wellness coach. Ready Gunner was founded by Neal Currey, a former Army Ranger with the 2nd battalion 75 Ranger Regiment. Neal conducted an additional two tours in Iraq as a Personal Security Specialist. In between, Neal worked for a company called SRATS (Specialized Reconnaissance Assault Transport Systems) in Special Projects. While there he helped in the production of the SRATS A1, a vehicle designed for Special Operation units in Afghanistan. After two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan with his unit, Neal left the military and moved on to the private sector.

Command Sgt. Major (ret.) Tom Satterly served in the Army for 25 years, 20 of those years were spent in the military’s most secretive and elite Special Operations unit, Delta Force. As an Operator and CSM, Tom fought in and lead countless high profile military missions including Operation Red Dawn (Saddam Hussein’s capture) and the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down) which was the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. That 18-hour firefight ended with Tom, along with several of his team mates, running the Mogadishu Mile to safety. Although the physical, mental, and emotional toll of war had compounded over the years, Tom never faced his Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and in 2013 he nearly ended his life. Had it not been a text from his now wife, Jen, he would have joined the 22 veterans who commit suicide every single day. As Director of Film and Photography of an elite Special Operations training company, Jen embedded with Navy Seals, Green Berets, and Army Rangers in (RMTs) Realistic Military Training exercises sometime for weeks at a time. During this time, she began to notice the same symptoms Tom was battling and began to ask questions. What was being done? Who is helping our warriors on the homefront heal? Who is helping the families with secondary PTS? She didn’t like the answers and became certified in health and wellness to better understand PTS and the body. Tom and Jen decided something had to be done and the work they did together training and preparing warriors to fight overseas turned into a mission of helping warriors and their families fight the silent war and to heal from it on the homefront. The Satterly’s founded All Secure Foundation in August 2017 as a resource library for helping warriors and their families navigate the maze of treatments and modalities of healing from PTS. They have worked individually with hundreds of warriors and their families and soon became more than a referral website but also a provider of education, awareness, and programs for healing. In 2019 ASF launched one of the only programs in the country for warrior couples to tackle PTS and Secondary PTS together with Emotionally Focused Therapy through their Special Operations Warrior Couples Retreat Workshops. Afghanistan. Iraq. His classified missions required stealth-like maneuvers to slip under the enemy’s radar so he could save hostages and halt terrorism in its tracks around the world. For two decades, Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly (Ret.) removed and fixed problems by taking a threat and eliminating it. He was the elite of the military elite – Delta Force. And his success, as well as the medals he has been awarded – five Bronze Stars, two With Valor – prove it. As a Tier 1 soldier, Tom knew how to take command of the most dangerous situations in the world. It was the everyday operations on the home front, after returning to civilian life, that caught him defenseless. When Tom retired from the military, he needed more than orders to break the “flight” wiring of his brain that, for 20 years, demanded violence and aggression as the go-to tactics required to rescue and save lives. A post-traumatic stress (PTS) hole started forming around Tom, and thanks to his wife, Jen, and her commitment to his healing and integration into civilian life, he climbed out safely. As we honor our veterans this week and their great sacrifice for our country, we are thrilled to have Ginger Gilbert Ravella join us on Pardon the Mess. Ginger is a mother of five, stepmother of two, military wife, writer, and speaker. At thirty-six years old, she faced the sudden, tragic loss of her college-sweetheart husband and Air Force F-16 pilot in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her husband, Major Troy Gilbert, gave his life while saving over twenty Special Operation soldiers. As Ginger so beautifully puts it, “He was a hero every day, but that day he became an American hero.” Major Gilbert left behind five beautiful children under the age of nine and a wife who spent the following days wrestling with God in the midst of deep despair and depression. Ginger learned that Iraqi insurgents had taken her husband’s body, thereby repeatedly making their story a CNN headline as multiple attempts were made to recover his body. Her testimony is so powerful, reminding us that God is enough even in the darkest places and how he prepared her well in advance for the hard days that were to come. Ginger is now remarried to another Air Force pilot, Colonel Jim Ravella (Ret), who lost his wife to breast cancer. Ginger shares advice on blended families, grief, ministering to widows, and wrestling with God in the hard places of life. This week we are talking about the Air Force PJ leadership style. Leading a dynamic organization such as an office of emergency management can be challenging. I had the opportunity to Lt.Col Joseph Barnard who worked his way from enlisted to lead the highly trained Air Force Para Jumpers Rescue Team (PJ). The insights that Joseph shares with us in this interview will change your paradigm on leadership. Guest BioBio - Joe Barnard is a retired USAF Lt Colonel. His 33 year military career started in1982 when he joined the Army as infantryman at the age of 17 from his parentshome in Pembroke Pines, FL. After his Army career, which included living in VicenzaItaly for two years, Joe returned to South Florida and worked varying warehouseand delivery driver jobs as well as being a lifeguard atseveral South Florida beaches.In 1988, Joe joined the USAF, 301 st Rescue Squadron atHomestead AFB as a Pararescueman. He remained inthe 301 st through Hurricane Andrew, and helpedfacilitate the unit’s move to Patrick AFB. Joe marriedMeghan in 1991. With a one-year-old son and anotheron the way, in 1997, he took a position as a PararescueInstructor at Kirtland AFB, NM. Joe was qualified toteach and lead all blocks of instruction: Aircraft and Jump Ops, Weapons-Tactics,Technical Rope, C2 and Dirt Medicine. He was also a member of the Special Tacticsand Recovery Specialist (STaRS) Parachute Demonstration Team.With a stern push from a young wife who wanted a better life for her family, in 1998Joe started college and received his bachelor’s degree in 2000 by attending classesevery weekend from 7-5 both Saturday and Sunday, ultimately leading to hiscommission as an officer in February of 2001. Joe was selected out of OTS as the 4thCombat Rescue Officer, a new career field the Air Force created to lead andcommand Pararescueman and SERE specialist. Joe completes his masters degree in2007.His last 15 years as an officer were a blur except for those two tours in Hawaii. Lotsof surfing and SEA travel. When not in the Pacific, multiple deployments presentedcomplex leadership challenges which he took head on. Post 9/11 years werebookend by death of teammates and success in harrowing missions. In the middlewas a tour as the first CRO to command the Pararescue School, where he was firedafter a year. That assignment is a book in itself.During his entire career, Joe unapologetically took on the overwhelming briefcaseattitude of the conventional Air Force with his backpack mentality on behalf of hismission and men. Ultimate career satisfaction came as Joe was selected for and hadtwo amazing years as the 38 th Rescue Squadron Commander. He and his team did itright, pushing forward many progressive training methods that are still in placetoday.As Joe turned 52, and his youngest son was a year away from College. It was time.He had done all he could do. Admittedly, he grew dissatisfied with DoD directionand with the vice grip sequestration and continuing resolution put on the force. Hepurposely retired without fan fair. Fully satisfied that he left it all on the table andenergized to be a capitalist in his next life. But first…A sabbatical at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017 was well deserved. As Joe haddone with his oldest son, he taught his youngest son to skydive and they took acouple of surf trips to Costa Rica and Baja. Once he was in in college, Meghan and Joeput their household belongings in storage and traveled Southeast Asia – Singapore,Bali and Thailand for four months.Back in the states, his job search started in early 2018. “It was fun, I interviewedthem more than they interviewed me. I want my second life to be epic.”Joe settled on a small company that installs wireless infrastructure for Verizon andTMobile. He loves it, its complex. He has daily influence over 32m in revenue, as hequickly took to running the sales pipeline, P&L of three divisions, HR, logistics andall operations. Likely not Joe’s final resting place.“I desire more responsibility, complexity and a more progressive executive team towork with, but I started in a great place for my capitalistic journey. I validated thatmy military leadership traits and problem solving abilities absolutely transfer to afor profit organization. I love every minute of it. A 25-year highly decorated U.S. Army veteran, Tom Satterly was portrayed in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down along with his teammates. He served in the elite Delta Force, witnessing intense combat at the Battle of Mogadishu and later in the Iraq war. After coping with PTS and other personal struggles following his time in combat, Tom and his wife Jen have started the All Secure Foundation, which provides resources for treatment to retired Special Operation veterans and their families. 

From The Anchor of Hope website: Col Ravella is a 1983 graduate of Texas A&M and served over 26 years in the USAF as an F-15E pilot with over 3700 hours and command at the Squadron and Group levels.  Jim is a father of seven children, a writer and a speaker.  Jim married Andrea Fuller in 1983; they had two wonderful sons, Nic and Anthony. They lost Andrea in 2007 after a four-year battle with breast cancer. During their fight with cancer, Jim documented their journey in a blog, Journey to Healing, that touched many lives around the world. Jim and Andrea spoke to cancer groups and churches, offering hope to those facing life's challenges.  Their faith, grace and courage was an inspiration to all who knew them and, through Jim's writing, continues to change the lives of those who read their story. Jim has appeared in numerous print venues and radio interviews. Her late husband, Major Troy Gilbert, an Air Force F-16 pilot, gave his life while saving over twenty Special Operation soldiers, defining a true American war hero.   His remains were tragically stolen by the enemy but led to a captivating story of recovery unprecedented in U.S. military history. He left behind five beautiful children, all under the age of 9 years. Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey – some of the greatest leaders of all time. But what makes each of these individuals such a remarkable leader? And how do we define great leadership? We may be apt to hold on to the traditional notion that leadership is defined by rank and order. But your position or title alone does not qualify you as a veritable leader. Think about it, how many CEOs are there in the world that hold a position of great power, but have a nominal impact on their employees? How many managers aren’t even respected by those that they manage? Even brilliant and innovative individuals can stumble when it comes to finding their voice. Because leadership is not defined by a position, nor it is even defined by intellectual prowess or natural talent – leadership is the skill of influence, something that you can use to impact the thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions of others. And it is the most important skill that anyone of us can master. Yet as important as leadership is, in today’s world, it’s a rarity. And that’s not because there is a scarcity of natural born leaders. In fact, leadership can be cultivated. Many of us suppose it’s an innate talent, but anyone can become a leader in something that they decide to become masterful in. You could be the leader in your business, the leader in your class, the leader in your own family. You could even decide to become the leader of your own life. There are different types and different styles of leadership. But real leadership starts with the capacity to discipline your disappointment. Because along any journey worth taking, you are going to encounter obstacles, and odds are, you are going to fail. But if you can find a way to connect to yourself, and connect to others, and if you can find a way to break through those challenges, you can become a true leader. And when you strive to serve the greater good – something greater than yourself – that’s when you can become a truly great leader. Tony and Mary Buckheit recently sat down with General Stanley McChrystal and Chris Fussell to discuss what great leadership looks like today and how to cultivate an infrastructure for success in any organization. General Stanley A. McChrystal has been called “one of America’s greatest warriors” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.  A retired four-star general, he is the former commander of U.S. and International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) Afghanistan and the former commander of the premier military counter-terrorism force, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He is best known for developing and implementing the current counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan, and for creating a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that revolutionized the interagency operating culture. General McChrystal now serves as a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs where he teaches a course on Leadership in Operation.  And he co-founded the McChrystal Group in January of 2011 where he is currently a partner.  McChrystal Group’s mission is to deliver innovative leadership solutions to American businesses to help them transform and succeed in challenging and dynamic environments. Chris Fussell is a former Navy SEAL Officer, where he spent 15 years leading SEAL elements in combat zones around the globe. He served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant General McChrystal during McChrystal’s final year commanding JSOC, becoming an integral part of the team that made the Special Operation’s transformation into a successful, agile network possible. Fussell is also a partner at the McChrystal Group, where he leads the McChrystal Group Leadership Institute, where he brings his Special Operations experience and his expertise in leadership development to organizations of all sizes. In addition to being a New York Times bestselling author, he regularly does media interviews, gives keynotes speeches, and speaks to business leaders at roundtables and panels. In an unexpected twist, Ginger tells about meeting her now husband, their short dating relationship and quick marriage and how they've learned to mesh two different families with similar stories of grief and loss. Today we talk with former Army Ranger and the owner of Ready Gunner, Neal Currey, about firearms. We'll cover some of the myths surrounding the sale of firearms, the responsibilities gun owners carry, the fundamentals of shooting, open versus concealed carry, and why men should learn how to shoot. Neal Currey Neal Currey is a former Army Ranger with 2nd battalion 75 Ranger Regiment and the owner of Ready Gunner. After two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan with his unit, Neal left the Military and moved into the private sector and conducted an additional two tours in Iraq as a Personal Security Specialist. Between that time, Neal worked for a company called SRATS (Specialized Reconnaissance Assault Transport Systems) in Special Projects. He helped in the production of the SRATS A1, a vehicle designed for Special Operation units in Afghanistan.
