On this episode of the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Wayne Kimmel interviewed Jason Martinez, an Anchor at FOX 29 Philadelphia. Martinez joined the FOX 29 News team in June 2019, as co-anchor of The FOX 29 News broadcasts weeknights at Five, Six, Ten and 11 p.m. An Emmy Award-winning anchor/reporter, Martinez moved to Philly from San Diego, where he was the morning anchor at KGTV the prior four years. His experience there includes anchoring non-stop coverage of the devastating Lilac Fire, which destroyed more than 200 homes, the international border conflict, immigration issues and California's cost of living crisis. Prior to San Diego, Martinez spent five years as an anchor at WPLG in Miami, covering some of the wildest "only in Florida" stories of his career. He covered Presidential elections in the swing state, US-Cuba relations, fake plastic surgeons, a violent face-eating incident and two Miami Heat NBA championships. Martinez's experience reporting in the field has taken him through floods, crime scenes, presidential elections, plane crashes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. In Fresno, CA, Martinez won an Emmy Award providing coverage for a devastating freeze that destroyed Central California's citrus crops. He also worked in Los Angeles, where he earned his fourth Emmy Award for team coverage of Michael Jackson's shocking death. After graduating from Chapman University in Orange, California, Martinez began his career as a reporter at WTVG in Toledo, Ohio. There, he covered several major stories including the November 2002 outbreak of tornadoes, "The Big Blackout," and he interviewed a young high school kid named LeBron James, who was good at basketball. Being a "Daddy" is Martinez's true love and he is the proud father of four children: Jagger, Carson, Angelina and John-Michael. He and his wife Lissette are involved in the "Live Like Bella Foundation," which benefits research to fight childhood cancer. Just days after he was born, Martinez's son Carson nearly died after contracting a blood infection. His remarkable recovery motivated Martinez to get involved with causes that benefit Children's Hospitals across the country. He lost his grandfather to Alzheimer's disease, which is another cause near and dear to his heart. He has been a partner with the Alzheimer's Association for many years. Martinez's other love is music. He has been a drummer since the age of four and has shared the stage with great musicians covering a variety of genres such as funk, country, jazz, Latin, R&B, soul and rock. A former college baseball player, he is a sports fanatic who, as a kid, played travel baseball with former Phillies great Chase Utley. He is also an avid golfer who cannot seem to find the fairway. Ep. 127: Elliott Lewis is an assistant professor of journalism at SUNY Purchase College in Westchester County, New York, where he teaches media law and broadcast news. He joined the faculty in 2015 after a 20-year career as a television reporter, anchor, producer and assignment editor. Elliott is a 2013 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law in Ohio, where he also served as a part-time faculty member in the university’s School of Communication. He is licensed to practice law in the state of New York. Before becoming a law student, Elliott was a freelance television news reporter in Washington, DC. Over the years, his clients included WJLA-TV, BET News, CNN, Associated Press Television, and the Washington bureaus of Tribune Broadcasting and Hearst Television. Prior to moving to the nation's capital, Elliott’s career took him to a number of cities around the country. He has worked as a reporter for WKMG-TV in Orlando, WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, KPTV in Portland, KGTV in San Diego, and KTVN in Reno. Elliott attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he studied Spanish and communications. When not in class, he could be found running the audio board at the campus radio station, working in the university’s public relations office, and delivering farm news for the College of Agriculture’s radio news service. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland-University College.  Early in his career, Elliott joined the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and later served on the NABJ Board of Directors from 2003-2007. In addition, he has been an ex-officio board member of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism think-tank located in St. Petersburg, Florida. With Fade, television journalist Elliott Lewis weaves his memoirs as a black-and-white biracial American with the voices of dozens of multiracial people who are challenging how we think and speak about race today. His interviews illuminate a variety of coping strategies and reveal stark generational differences in the ways mixed race people have come to terms with their identity. A comprehensive look at the multiracial state of the union, Fade tackles hot-button issues such as the often complicated lives of multiracial people in communities of color, interracial dating, transracial adoption, "black versus biracial" identities, and the birth of a national multiracial movement. Elliott also shares his own moving - and often humorous -firsthand experiences with race, along with intimate stories from those at the forefront of nationwide efforts to formally recognize the multiracial population. Earlier this week, I made an exciting announcement that should greatly benefit the journalism industry. I introduced my new book, The Solo Video Journalist, dedicated to providing a unique how-to guide for TV multimedia journalists -- also known as MMJs, backpack journalists, one-man and one-woman bands, and VJs. The book can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and my publisher's web site. Throughout the book, I interview some of the country's best MMJs -- and journalists period. I use each chapter to break down a specific step of the storytelling process, combining my advice with that of the journalist I interviewed for that chapter. In the case of shooting solo stand-ups, I knew exactly who to call. Joe Little of KGTV is my guest on Episode #46 of the Telling the Story podcast. He has gained notoriety in media circles for his annual YouTube compilation of his stand-ups that have continued now for more than half a decade. (I actually just got sidetracked writing this post while watching one. Check it out ...) He brings creativity and fearlessness to a task that would deter many solo acts -- myself included. I shied away from shooting my own stand-ups for a long time but have seen from Little and others how they can benefit my work. Now I do them regularly, and I am more empowered because of my solo status. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #46: Joe Little, solo video journalist, KGTV appeared first on Telling The Story.

Fall is in the air, and that means IdeaFestival, and jokes about pumpkins and white people. Luckily, we cover both on this week's show. One of our favorite people, Janelle Monáe, came back to Louisville this week for IdeaFestival, and brought along some folks from her Wondaland Arts Society. We caught up with them in the green room just before they caught their plane out of town (she had to perform at Madison Square Garden a day later - totally no big deal). We talked to the artists about their recent visit to a drag ball in New York, and about "Hellyoutalmbout," the police brutality protest anthem that's been ringing out from rallies and marches all summer long. "We wanted to use it as a vessel, and as a tool," she says of the song. "We're speaking out against the abuse of power because we believe that silence is our enemy, and sound is our weapon." As a team of folks trying to make a difference through the power of radio, we could not agree more! In Juicy Fruit this week, America loses its warm fuzzy feelings about the Pope when it's revealed that he met with Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis during his recent U.S. visit. Since we recorded, the Vatican has downplayed the visit and said Davis was just one of many in a greet line. Elsewhere in Christian news, a 5-year-old girl was barred from returning to her school in southern California, because she has two moms. A spokesperson for the privately-run Christian school told KGTV in San Diego, "The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. We don't condone any sinful lifestyles." And Azealia Banks called said the LGBT community is like the "white KKK's." Banks has been criticized by gay activists recently for her use of the f-word slur. We talk about how her black and queer identity plays into her troubles with the press. And finally, what's up with white people and pumpkins? A mic.com article looks at the political history and symbolism of the seasonal food. Did you know pumpkins had a political history? See, you learn something new every week on Strange Fruit. Happy Fall!
