In this episode of Guerrilla History, we are lucky to be joined by a special guest in Cuba as well as a special guest host whom many of you will likely remember from past episodes of the show. Here, we bring on Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández from Belly of the Beast to discuss Bob Menendez (who was just convicted on corruption charges), US-Cuba policy, and how these are related. This episode is being based off of two documentaries that Liz hosted for Belly of the Beast - Hardliner of the Hudson which takes a deep look at Menendez, and Uphill on the Hill which is an examination of recent US-Cuba policy. Watch these, and subscribe to Belly of the Beast on YouTube! Adnan was not able to join Henry for this one, so we drafted in our friend and former guest Taylor Genovese as a special guest host. Taylor is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Dutchess Community College, an editor at Iskra Books, and a documentary filmmaker. You may remember Taylor as a guest from two previous episodes - Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and Art and the Working Class. Major thanks to Taylor for coming in on relatively short notice for this one! Liz Oliva Fernández is a Cuban journalist and the presenter of The War on Cuba, for which she won a Gracie Award. Apart from her journalism and filmmaking, Liz is a dedicated anti-racist and feminist activist. Follow Belly of the Beast on Twitter @bellybeastcuba to keep up with Liz's work. For the past six years on this show, we've talked to working people from across the United States, from virtually every walk of life, about their lives, jobs, dreams, and struggles. But today, we're going to talk about what it's like to live and work in a country that has been designated a political enemy of US empire, a country that sits only 90 miles away from the US, a country that American politicians have resolved to strangle into oblivion for the past 60 years. In this episode, we speak with Liz Oliva Fernández from Cuba. Liz is an award-winning Cuban journalist with Belly of the Beast, an independent outlet covering Cuba and US-Cuba relations, and she is the presenter of two new documentaries, Hardliner on the Hudson and Uphill on the Hill. In addition to exposing the sinister interests behind, and the devastating real-world impacts of, the Cold War Cuban policy of Joe Biden's administration, pushed by powerful hardliners like Senator Bob Menendez, former Chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the films also document Liz's experience as a Black journalist from the Global South coming to the US to confront the predominantly white politicians and interests waging economic war on her country. We talk about Liz's new films, and we talk about growing up in Cuba, becoming a journalist, and life for woking people in Cuba under the US-imposed blockade and designation of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.Additional links/info below…Belly of the Beast website, Facebook page, Instagram, and YouTube channelBelly of the Beast, Hardliner on the HudsonBelly of the Beast, Uphill on the HillAndrew Buncombe, The Guardian, “Two Cuban documentaries show effects of US sanctions on island nation"Ju-Hyun Park, The Real News Network, "Cuba's protests and the long crisis of US intervention"Permanent links below…Working People Patreon pageLeave us a voicemail and we might play it on the show!Labor Radio / Podcast Network website, Facebook page, and Twitter pageIn These Times website, Facebook page, and Twitter pageThe Real News Network website, YouTube channel, podcast feeds, Facebook page, and Twitter pageWorking People Podcast show page.Featured Music…Jules Taylor, “Working People” Theme SongStudio Production: Maximillian AlvarezPost-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcast

On this episode of the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Wayne Kimmel interviewed Jason Martinez, an Anchor at FOX 29 Philadelphia. Martinez joined the FOX 29 News team in June 2019, as co-anchor of The FOX 29 News broadcasts weeknights at Five, Six, Ten and 11 p.m. An Emmy Award-winning anchor/reporter, Martinez moved to Philly from San Diego, where he was the morning anchor at KGTV the prior four years. His experience there includes anchoring non-stop coverage of the devastating Lilac Fire, which destroyed more than 200 homes, the international border conflict, immigration issues and California's cost of living crisis. Prior to San Diego, Martinez spent five years as an anchor at WPLG in Miami, covering some of the wildest "only in Florida" stories of his career. He covered Presidential elections in the swing state, US-Cuba relations, fake plastic surgeons, a violent face-eating incident and two Miami Heat NBA championships. Martinez's experience reporting in the field has taken him through floods, crime scenes, presidential elections, plane crashes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. In Fresno, CA, Martinez won an Emmy Award providing coverage for a devastating freeze that destroyed Central California's citrus crops. He also worked in Los Angeles, where he earned his fourth Emmy Award for team coverage of Michael Jackson's shocking death. After graduating from Chapman University in Orange, California, Martinez began his career as a reporter at WTVG in Toledo, Ohio. There, he covered several major stories including the November 2002 outbreak of tornadoes, "The Big Blackout," and he interviewed a young high school kid named LeBron James, who was good at basketball. Being a "Daddy" is Martinez's true love and he is the proud father of four children: Jagger, Carson, Angelina and John-Michael. He and his wife Lissette are involved in the "Live Like Bella Foundation," which benefits research to fight childhood cancer. Just days after he was born, Martinez's son Carson nearly died after contracting a blood infection. His remarkable recovery motivated Martinez to get involved with causes that benefit Children's Hospitals across the country. He lost his grandfather to Alzheimer's disease, which is another cause near and dear to his heart. He has been a partner with the Alzheimer's Association for many years. Martinez's other love is music. He has been a drummer since the age of four and has shared the stage with great musicians covering a variety of genres such as funk, country, jazz, Latin, R&B, soul and rock. A former college baseball player, he is a sports fanatic who, as a kid, played travel baseball with former Phillies great Chase Utley. He is also an avid golfer who cannot seem to find the fairway. On November 3rd the United Nations is set to vote on ending the US blockade against Cuba, and local solidarity activists are demanding Nancy Pelosi join in the calls to end the embargo. On Thursday, November 3rd at 4:30 pm a broad coalition of Bay Area groups will rally at the SF Federal Building (7th St. near Mission) to call on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “Let Cuba Live!” The rally will take place on the day that the United Nations General Assembly is expected to overwhelmingly condemn, for the 30th year in a row, the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade that the US imposes against Cuba. People will then march to UN Plaza to spotlight the significance of the UN vote. We speak with Diana Block, an anti-imperialist, abolitionist, feminist who works with the Bay Area – Cuba Saving Lives Committee. She also is also a founding and active member of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners, and a co-founder of San Francisco Women Against Rape. In March 1999 the Baltimore Orioles became the first US Major League team to play in Cuba for more than 40 years. Fans in Cuba eagerly awaited the fixture, and the game was played in a carnival atmosphere, with Fidel Castro looking on from the crowds. It was hailed as a success of sporting diplomacy. Cuban baseball star Enrique Diaz was in the national team that day. He tells Witness about the highlight of his sporting career. (Photo: Cuban and American flags. Credit: Getty Images)
Cuba is a small island nation of 11.3 million people, but the country has long loomed large in the American political imagination. Viewed as both a hostile pro-Soviet neighbor and an anti-imperialist revolutionary, Cuba has held a contentious relationship with the US. The Obama administration began to repair the strained diplomatic relationship, but the invasion of Ukraine and enduring Trump-era sanctions are once again inflaming deep-rooted Cold War tensions. In this week's episode, we explore the deep roots of Cuban internationalism…and its impact on everyday Cubans. We begin with historian William Kelly, who charts Cuba's little-known history of solidarity with Ukraine—and how Cuba's pro-Putin stance is turning this history on its head. Then, Ray is joined by Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Ada Ferrer, whose new book Cuba: An American History offers a new take on US-Cuba relations. Guests: William Kelly, lecturer in Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University Ada Ferrer, Julius Silver Professor of History and Latin American Studies at New York University and Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of Cuba: An American History Host: Ray Suarez If you appreciate this episode and want to support the work we do, please consider making a donation to World Affairs. Media coverage abundantly shares issues of scarcity of medicines, shortage of food, blackouts, a rise in Covid cases and deaths and an arguably rigid government response to the economic problems. However, the illegal and immoral blockade and how it has shaped the economic reality is only mentioned without proper understanding of its role in the issues of greater concern. We try to bring balance to understanding the problem by continuing to expose little known facts regarding US micro and macroaggressions against Cuba and the quality of life in Cuba. We review the hundreds of millions of dollars poured into Cuban civil society by CIA surrogates USAID and NED beginning late last century to date, with the primary motivation of overthrowing the Cuban political economic model. A crime of gross sovereignty violation, by any country's legal standards. All sold to the American public as ‘bringing democracy' to Cuba (whether they like it or not. We review Max Blumenthal's recent 7/25/21 article, Cuba's Cultural Counter Revolution: US Government backed rappers, artists gain fame as catalyst for current unrest. We include an overview history of terrorism including airplane dropping incendiary devices on sugar crops and mills, the introduction of sugar cane smut, blue mold, along with biological attacks on tobacco seedlings, bovine attacks, pig swine with the entire pig population destruction, dengue fever, and other aggressions such as the bombing of a civilian airliner in midflight killing more than 70 souls all through the end of the last century that resulted in more than 3500 Cuban deaths. Yet, Cuba is put on the US State Department of terrorist nations without ever committing a terrorist offense on US land or taking a single American life. Episode 13: The Art History Professor... The Writer: Alejandro Anreus: (published Tuesday night May 18th, 2021!) Alejandro's Publications. His Art. SUPPORT ALEJANDRO and THREATENED WPU PROGRAMS/JOBS- SIGN THE PETITIONProfessor Alejandro Anreus is an art historian known for his expertise and research in modern and contemporary art of Latin America and the Spanish-Speaking Caribbean, Latinx Art in the US (Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic), African American Art (1920s-1960s), American Art and Politics of the 1930s, Exile Culture of Latin America, and Liberation Theology. He is also known by his students at William Paterson University as one who is completely down to earth and authentic and teaches about life through Art and... lessons from his grandmother. Alejandro is one who considers the full context of the art he shares with his readers and his students. He reminds, "Art is a wonderfully resistant element that will always be there. It is the witness of life." In this recording Alejandro shares what he consistently includes in his classroom and his writing: the social and historical context, but also the spirituality of the artists and the human experiences surrounding what has been created. He reminds us to not forget the "poetry of life with all of its beauty and its brutality." With that lens, he challenges the historical tendency to focus on the oppressive powers that rule societies since eventually they will just be seen as a side note to describing the great art, writing, and music of the time. When we focus on the ideal, the nostalgia, the extremes we often miss the nuances of real life and the full context of what makes life open our eyes. This amazing conversation calls for breaking bread, justice, fulfillment and challenging each other in a sincere way rather than just silencing people. He encourages living our entire lives as a sacrament; an outward sign of an inward grace. Notes on this episode: The story of the Xmas tree drawing was told to Alejandro by Chicano scholar Tomas Ybarra Frausto – it happened to a major Chicano artist who told him the story...possibly the late Ruben Trejo, a sculptor. The poet commenting about Castro was the Cuban Catholic poet Gaston Baquero, who died in exile in Madrid. He said something like “Castro will be remembered merely as the dictator of Cuba during the deaths of the painter Amelia Pelaez (d. 1968) and the poet Jose Lezama Lima (d. 1976).The black man who challenged and converted a leader of the KKK through friendship was the musician Daryl Davis. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Guest: Jason Poblete joins me for a discussion of claims against the Cuban government by US citizens. He the author of various articles about this topic. Jason is one of the founding partners of the law firm Poblete Tamargo based in Washington DC. He concentrates his practice on global trade and compliance, defense and commercial export controls, sanctions, such related areas as anti-boycott measures and Interpol defense, as well as other international legal matters. At the moment, there are are many US citizens who have open claims to recover properties and assets confiscated by the Cuban government. The issue had always been a problem in previous US-Cuba talks until President Obama went ahead and reestablished diplomatic relations with Cuba. The embargo still stands and that may be the best hope to settle these claims. Click to support some of our friends.... ...CLICK AUDIBLE.COM, YOUR SOURCE FOR AUDIO BOOKS!
